sorry if this has been posted before but is it possible in anyway to connect a usb flash drive to my desire using an adaptor or something :? saying that is there an app available to browse and external USB
No. It is impossible.
possible, yes...worth the hassle, nope.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702742
my frined has a galaxy 2 and he has a cable for it, we tired a lot of things, but nothing works.
its a shame really
xoom usb host works pretty well - keyboards, mice, ps3 controller - out the box too
but for the desire - everything was picked up as an in-car device (without flashing new kernels)
I saw somebody last week connecting a usb flash drive to on his mobile but I didn´t had the time to see and ask which phone it was.
Have been thinking about it ever since. Would be so handy to push your date to a flash drive on the go.
I been to the same bar in the hope I would see that person again but I haven´t saw him again. I´m afraid it was a tourist.

It looks a big hassle indeed if you have to switch kernels to get to slave mode again.
it's nokia i believe

Hi Folks
I have an Asus Transformer arriving in the next few days and in anticipation I bought a Telstra Ultimate Mobile USB modem.
Now I am hoping like hell I can use in on the tablet when it arrives .... can it be done ?
Thanks for reading and Mods can move this to somewhere else if I posted in the wrong area
Cheers
Android has no support for USB network devices.
That said some rom builders for some devices have got some USB 3g dongles working on devices that have USB host mode ports (The TF doesn't have a USB host port without the keyboard dock)
Overall I'd say there is vanishingly small likelihood it would work out of the box and it's unlikely it will ever work.
Honeycomb 3.1 is supposed to include support for a much wider range of devices and I've seen reports that USB modems may be among these devices.
I'm planning to try my old Huawei E220 modem (if any device is supported it's going to be the E220) as soon as I get the update applied and see how I get on.

I am getting the dock as well so are you saying it may work on the USB off the dock ?

Sadly I've tried both a Huawei E220 and E160G without any success.
I haven't tried checking logcat etc when I plug in the device but at the moment the transformer doesn't recognise them as modems (or seem to show the micro-sd card reader on the E160G either but that may be down to a dodgy micro-sd card)
I can't say I'm exactly surprised as USB modem support wouldn't exactly help Asus to sell the 3G version of the Transformer (when it's finally released), but maybe the extra device support in 3.1 will make it easier for the dev community to add this functionality.
EEE use with Telstra Ultimate USB modem
Thanks for this thread.
Unfortunately, I have been caught on this too and have been searching for some answers. This site was the closest I found to something that applies.
I have tried it on the docking station host port and it does not even see it.
I tried fooling it by putting a copy of the installation software on a thumb-drive using another port, it saw the folder but would not execute any of the auto run files.
Looks to me like either Telstra or Android need a firmware version put into the hardware before we get any joy. It's too bad because it is a great tablet and the docking station is great.
Cheers
My son is stationed in Afghanistan. He has (pays for) an internet connection. He is not allowed to install a wifi access point. He must connect via Cat5 cable.
He had a laptop which just had the power adapter connection break off inside the laptop. (Thanks for that great engineering, ASUS!) While he sends that back stateside for us to get fixed, he wants to get a tablet so he can still get on the internet, message friends and family back home, etc.
Originally, he was thinking iPad, but that seems to only allow connectivity via wifi. So do most tablets I've seen. I've seen a thread on here where someone is working on a USB driver which would allow the USB2Internet devices to work, but that requires rooting a device and installing custom drivers, and I'm not sure he is savvy enough to do that.
Are there any tablets that you would recommend that could connect to the internet via an internet cable instead of Wifi? (The only one I have found is the Gigabyte Win7 tablet.)
What does everyone recommend? (Ideally, something I can find on amazon, because I can dropship straight to him that way...)
Thanks!
This might help

Thanks Hooride707. I searched for similar threads but somehow didn't see that one...
I did find that the Toshiba Thrive can do it via a USB 2 Ethernet adapter:

So far that seems like a pretty good choice...
No prob

Has anyone been able to hook up a flash drive yet with USB OTG? Been waiting for my cable to arrive to test out. Just wondering since I didn't order a powered hub with it, since half the forums I have searched require it to work. If anyone has had any luck please let me know.

Nevermind figured it out myself. Need the powered hub.
On another note I am starting to really hate Samsung after seeing this. SamSung
Yep, we have a guide posted in the General section. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629134
official RUU is neccessary?
Will there ever be a chance that REAL usb otg is enabled? Which means without connecting external power? (I dont consider using an y cable and then externally powering usb to be "on the go")
While most modern phones made by samsung and some other manufacturers enable it by default but htc doesn't is beyond me.

I really want this too... i could control my dslr. and with power connection needed, it gets so worthless, because there isnt always a socket around...
Apparently Qualcomm does but HTC removes that feature.
in the leaked one x jb update you can use usb otg without external power, hopefully they will do the same for our phone.
Hello,
My Desire S is USB BRICKED but not entirely - it still charges when I plug it into the computer.
I have the ICS RUU .exe file from HTC and I can transfer it into the phone via a SD card reader.
My question is, can I install ICS with this file from within the device without using the computer cause obviously I can't do that.
Thank you.
I answered you already on iAndroid
Basically you need to try taking out the Rom.zip from the RUU, rename it to PG88IMG.zip, copy to SD-CARD and start the phone into bootloader.
This will start flashing the ROM automatically.
Make sure you remove the zip from the SD-CARD when all is done.
Good luck!
BTW, how do you know it is a USB brick? Maybe it is only a drivers issue? Did you try installing latest version of HTC Sync?
Thank you for your reply.
Yes I have tried installing all the drivers and the many solutions that ppl offer online.
I myself came to the solution of extracting the RUU files from the .exe file but I don't know how to do that.
How do you extract an .exe file?
Thank you.
Or try from a different PC, using a different USB cable
Doesn't work from windows 8

Tried many different PCs and different cables.

Just run the RUU.exe, when the screen pops up with the picture of the device go to the start menu (Windows 7) and type in search *temp* and press enter. When the folder opens search it for ROM.zip and there you go.

Thanks a lot!
Doing it now, let's see how does
It worked, I have ICS
Still usb bricked though
This means - it's not "USB bricked", you have physically malfunctioning USB port. Look at it, you might visually detect the malformed/covered contact.

Looks fine and clean. Arrow-straight golden bars.
I have nice OtterBox Commuter case that closes the USB port with a rubber seal, I doubt anything happened to it.
I have a similar problem with mine - the phone will charge but it isn't detected by any of my computers which have known working drivers installed (i.e. they detect the missuses HTC fine).
No point in sending it back to HTC for repair as I don't think there is any way of getting it back to stock without using fastboot.
I've been considering buying and fitting one of these:

Anyone done this and managed to fix their broken usb port?
Cheers,
Dave.

I don't get it, what is it?
Replacement USB port and flex cable - if there is something physically wrong with the USB port then I'd imagine this would fix it. Worth a go as it is pretty cheap - not sure how easy it is to fit though...I'll let you know if/when I get round to ordering it!

I haven't done this myself, but have had my phone apart a couple of times - to replace the touch-screen and the LCD. Taking it apart is fairly simple - I have posted about it here several times before - and replacing this part should be a doddle. Yet again, here is the tear-down video from YouTube.
(Moved from One X general)
I cannot find any new posts on this, so please excuse me if I missed it somewhere. I (like most One X owners) got extremely upset at the delayed launch of 4.1.1 for our devices. I don't know exactly who to blame for that one. We HTC One X owners, At&t specifically, waited for 6 months for an update to be available. I got so tired of waiting, I took action, rooted my phone and put a stock 4.1.1 JB on it, and I'm loving it. And guess what? The usb OTG WORKS!!! Now comes a new challenge. Usb OTG plus charging. I know this is possible, I have read the forums. I know the One X is capable of doing this. I just need to be pointed in the right direction. For the love of Android, please help me!
P.S. I am willing to install/modify software, NOT willing to modify hardware.
Full powered OTG is now supported on the latest base. Not sure which one you're on, but try a 3.18 rom.
3.18 rom? plz elaborate...

Yes sir...What he said ^(area51avenger)
I want to use both otg and a charger at the same time. Charging my phone while using a flash drive.
Usb otg works fine, I just want to charge my phone while using it. I have a "y" cable from ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/360595771170?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649) and it won't charge but the otg works fine.
Oh, and I am using 3.17 atm
odex-JB-Sense4+.zip rom by tachi91
I got it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35647985
Elemental has supported powered OTG for a while, but I don't think there's a way to charge the phone at the same time.
Please by all means correct me if I am wrong in assuming this:
I know for a fact that what I want to do works on newer samsung phones. I don't think that this is a proprietary hardware issue as everything I've seen done on a GS3 I can do on my own phone. Usb otg didn't work until updating my phone, but it worked for those samsung phones straight out of the box. I'm just hoping there's just some hidden "switch" or update that I have to do to get this to work. Like I stated, I have seen this cable adapter work, I just want it to work for me.
Did you read the thread I linked you?
Sent from my VENOMized HoxL
If there's a way to do it with the Evita, I don't think I've seen it here. It's been discussed and my recollection is that it won't work.
You might ask in the ElementalX kernel thread.
Coincidentally avenger, that was one of the threads I read before resorting to this. I don't want to do anything fancy like using a mouse/keyboard with my phone, my ideal situation is this: Being able to charge my phone while I sit on the couch, switching from one flash drive to another, to watch movies wirelessly on my HTC Media Link HD connected to my 56 inch flat screen lcd tv. I just want to have a charger and a flash drive connected at the same time. Is that too much to ask? (rhetorical at this point)...lol
Flar would know.
For what it's worth, I can charge my phone while playing stuff through my mhl adapter.
Sent from my HTC One XL
Yeah but I wanted to do this sitting away from the tv. The crappy thing is, my friend just came over and I gave him one of the adapters I had. He plugs a charger and flashdrive up and then his phone (SG3). The drive pops up and the phone starts charging...sigh...lucky s.o.b. Is there a way to update my kernel from 3.17 to 3.18 with out starting my rom over? Maybe a new kernel is my fix. Btw I have an mhl adapter also.
Did we ever find a solution? I have an m8 and the same needs, well, similar. Just need to charge with OTG connected.
