What is the best Android tablet right now?
I really want
1) 1 GB RAM
2) Dual Core
3) 9.7 inch or superior
4) microSD or SD
5) WiFi
6) Android 3.0
7) light
8) thin
9) Excellent battery
10) Gorgeous display, good resolution
11) Netflix (I don't care if I have to root the phone)
12) Ability to root the tablet (this is VERY important)
13) Price
I would ideally like something that looks as cool as the iPad 2
I REALLY like how Apple makes their devices really thin, especially the iPad 2, it looks SO awesome
Any suggestions?
I want to buy the tablet within the next 30 days or so, I only like to wait if it makes sense. For example, I am tired of waiting for the Samsung Galaxy SII, by the time it comes I won't buy it, it just arrived way too late for my taste
So, if the answer is "Wait 2 months and then..." then I'm not interested
If I have to wait 30 days or so, I guess I can, but I REALLY want a nice Tablet since I've bought numerous games/apps that I think will look better on the Android Tablet
I want to buy the Tablet at Newegg
Here's the (almost) perfect one for you.... The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. It has all what you're looking for (except for the sdcard slot) but has a lot more features and it is available at Newegg at a reasonable price.

yeah he pretty much covered it...i just got a 10.1" galaxy and i love it! it would be nice to have an sd card slot, but 32gb is a decent ammount of space, and if you need more you can get a usb adapter that plugs into the 30 pin connector (basically makes the 30 pin slot a usb slot) and plus in thumb drives and such...android > ios, and the galaxy is actually thinner than the ipads...samsung makes a GREAT tablet!
If your looking to get one right now and not wait than the samsung galaxy that just came out is your best bet. although just fyi you are getting close the shopping season so you are going to see a slew of different models coming out from various companies, and you will always get that buyers remorse feeling as the item that comes out 2 weeks after you buy yours will have some new fancy feature added to it.
But as of right this minute the galaxy should meet your needs.
you can also consider the asus transformer, which is competing with the galaxy tab
The Asus Transformer is $399 the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is $499
The Asus Transformer has Micro SD Card reader the Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not
So, with all due respect to all the previous comments, why should I spend the extra $200?
I dislike Apple's stupid way of charging $100 extras for a simple 16GB of space, and now Samsung (which copies A LOT of Apple, hence the legal problems it has with them), follows exactly the same idea
charge $100 extra for 16GB
So, if I buy the Asus, I can be happy with the 16GB, and then I can upgrade it
Please confirm if the Asus Transformer (which sells for $399) has expansion
So far it seems the difference is the width of the tablet, the Samsung is 30% more thinner
same with the weight 20% more lighter for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Anyway, I have a $799 limit.
WIth that money I can buy a Turtle Beach PX5 + Asus Transformer and still have $136 credit left, which allows me to buy a Newegg extended warranty
PLus with teh Asus Transformer I have the extended keyboard
Bottom line, the reason why I don't see myself buying a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 is because I am FORCED to buy the 32GB model, since these Apple copycats decided that they need to charge $100 for 16GB
So I don't want to buy something not-upgradable, so I have to go for the more expensive model
If I go for Samsung I would spend $888 for both products, so there's a BIG $200 difference
Hi,
One of the best android tabs around right now would be th Asus transformer, by it's hardware, Asus's update quality, and by it's price. I would definitely go for that one, but maybe wait for the Asus Transformer 2 coming out in a few months ^^

Well, have you actually tested that tablet?
I would REALLY, REALLY like to use it as a e-Book reader.
So, if it weights too much, then it might won't do the trick
Ideally I would like something that feels similar to the iPad, something that feels confortable so I can read books from that thing
Thanks a lot
I'd buy a Kindle or similar for ebooks - it's much nicer to read on for long periods than a back-illuminated screen.
I am currently living in Japan and found the Wifi Xoom for about 450 USD on Amazon.jp.
As it seems a good price, I am tempted to buy it; the only thing holding me back is knowing Kal-el based tablets are just around the corner.
Am I right in holding off? What are the chances of a Kal-el tablet costing about as much (don't really want to go over 500 USD for a tablet) at or reasonably close after launch? Is the Tegra2 fast enough for a 720p tablet? I have tried several of the ones available in shops here (Lenovo Ideapad, Acer Iconia and Transformer, Samsung Galaxy 10.1, Toshiba Regza tablet) and the UI (browser in particular) seems to lag. Is this due to the crap skins manufacturers have saddles Honeycomb with (and in this case, has the Xoom been spared the same fate) or is the Tegra2 just not enough to run Honeycomb smoothly?
Just noticed the release of GT2, and it first I thought it was just a new name for GT7+. But, a closer look reveals a few differences, like a slower (!) CPU and no flash for the back camera..
* 1,0 GHz Dual-Core Processor (unspecified)
* 1 GB RAM
* 7" 1024x600 PLS TFT
* Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
* 3 Megapixel Rear Camera (no flash), VGA Front Camera
* 8/16/32GB User memory, microSD (up to 32GB)
* 193.7 x 122.4 x 10.5 mm, 344 g
* Li-ion 4,000mAh
Prices here in Sweden will be (incl. 25 % tax):
* Wi-Fi: 2 995 SEK (~450 USD)
* 3G: 3 695 SEK (~556 USD)
Anyway, the most interesting thing imho is that the tablet in question will ship in March, according to Samsung with ICS on board. As the hardware is more or less similar (assuming the GT2 has 1,0 GHz Exynos), can we hope for some kind of official update around that time too?
I for one am a little pissed about this device. I spent $400 on a Tab Plus and instead of Samsung using their resources getting ICS out and fix the various bugs, they decide to build ANOTHER device that looks the exact same as the one they already have out.
The only reason that I can see is that the Exynos processor is causing issues and they cannot seem to fix like how my device heats up on the left side (processor side btw) so they make a new one with a different processor chip.
Either way, I feel like I've gotten the shaft with this device as I'm stuck with a gimpy version of Honeycomb and looks to be already phased out after 4 months. I guess it could be worse though... I could have gotten the T-former Prime v1.
kind of weird. why release this? got a feeling ics for our tab 7 plus will be delayed over and over again or Samsung will just end up not releasing it for the 7 plus.
the 7 plus is already down to $350. if released in USA, I find it hard to believe to sell for higher or even both at same time. awkward.
pretty sure its a tegra chip.
And my friends....Welcome to the world of Samsung. I've been saying it since the original galaxy S line. Their idea of a software update is to release a new product. We will get ICS but not this quarter and probably not the next either.
Geesh, it even looks the same.

Hm.. Well, if it is Tegra 2 under the hood, there is a big difference (in favor for the Plus, performance wise).
Has someone found a confirmation for which SoC that is used?
Here's the thing. Aside from the fact that it has a lower clock speed on the processor, (possibly a different, cheaper processor), the fact that it has no LED flash, and a lower resolution front facing camera; if you look carefully at the official press photos, you will notice that it is a bit more "touchwizzed" (look at the icons, they are a lot like the icons on the phone and the OG Galaxy Tab 7, (with colored squares behind each app icon.) It seems that this may in fact be Samsung's answer to the new ASUS 7in, $250 ICS tablet. If this is Samsung's "budget tablet" then it makes sense. If this is true, it will show up on all of the carriers, (subsidized and contracted, of course,) and may hit retailers as a sub-$300 wifi tablet. At that price point, this makes sense.

I actually was a little upset that we get no ICS and that samsung did the same like they did with the Galaxy S and the Galaxy S 4G or something like that, but then I looked at the specs and it seems that you may be right as it seems to be made as a budget tablet.

You make good points and I get what you’re saying but I can’t believe that a dual core tegra 2(???) 7” tablet is Samsungs answer to the Asus 7” quad core rumored at CES. I mean you said it yourself; the specs are subpar compared to the 7+ so how is it going to compare on paper of head to head? Looking at the pricing of this new Samsung it’s hard to make a case for it comparing it to the Asus, which will be sub $300. If they really wanted to compete they could’ve lowered the 7+ to $299 and upgraded it to ICS. Now that’s a tablet that would sell.
I’m not grabbing the pitchfork over this one because I’m not overly concerned with ICS, I have a Galaxy Nexus and it’s really not that distant from HC. Besides, I learned a while ago not to buy stuff for what you want it to be but for what it is. With that said, I do believe the 7+ will see ICS but not before they’ve milked every dollar out of their latest release. I learned this first hand with Samsung.
Unless this new tablet is $199-$249, I don’t see the point. Why would they have two 7” tablets in the same price range with similar specs?
Until pricing and target markets are confirmed we should take a deep breath. I like to bang on Samsung but they aren't alone, a lot of manufacturers do this. Two weeks after the Transformer prime was realeased Asus announced a new "better" prime.

Keep in mind that even though Asus has announced the sub $300 price, there's no guarantee that they'll actually launch at that price - or even if they do, that it'll be available in quantity early enough to matter. Note, for example, the supply problems they've been having with the Transformer Prime.
Let's say it takes a quarter to go from rumor to finalized design, then another quarter to ramp up manufacturing. That's 6 months out.
In the meantime, Samsung has proven that they can 1) deliver their 7" tablets in quantity right now and 2) they can hit the $350 price point on their 7" tablet right now (which lends credence to the $300 or $250 price point if they ship with cheaper components). With B&N and Amazon selling Nook Tablets and Kindle Fires by the truckloads, there's ample opportunity for Samsung to get in at the $200-250 price point and get their share of profits before quad core 7" tablets are able to compete at that price point.
In other words, this isn't a device I'm interested in but that doesn't mean there aren't millions of potential Nook or Kindle customers who would be.
I'll wait to see their official pricing, unless this thing is under $300, which I'm not convinced it will be, I don't see the point. If the overseas pricing is any indication this will not be marketed as a budget tab.

You make a great point here that I had missed entirely. This may not be slated to fight the ASUS ME370T (the CES teased $250 Tegra 3 tablet,) this may be trying to claw back some of the low-end marketshare from the Kindle Fire and the Nook, which would make even more sense. On top of that, we have to remember that ASUS is attempting to enter that market as well. While the $250 ME370T is at best 2 quarters out, ASUS has officially announced the EeePad MeMo (ME171) which will have a 7-inch WXGA (1,280 x 800) IPS capacitive touchpanel, a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm 8260 processor, a gigabyte of memory, 16GB / 32GB of storage, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a 1.2 megapixel front / 5 megapixel rear camera (with 1080p recording), an A-GPS sensor, gyroscope, proximity sensor and a micro-USB port. I have a feeling that the Galaxy Tab 2 is going to be competing with the similarly specced ME171. I'm going to wait until MWC, or a bit after to see what Samsung plans to unveil to fight the quad core war.
But that would only make sense if this tablet is priced in the nook and kindle price range. This doesn't appear to be the case. Samsung doesn't appear to be marketing this as a budget product, they really never do,

Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), brings ICS on the cheap
We've got no exact price quote for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) just yet, but is should slide somewhere beneath the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, which is currently going for about €320. Sales should start in March.

As to Samsung updating - Samsung is actually (usually) fairly good at updating non-carrier-branded devices in a timely fashion.
Carrier-branded devices (especially in North America) are a whole different story... Samsung doesn't seem to have the balls to stand up to carriers.
looks to me like the typical normal single core phone will now be a dual core in 2012. and why not use a cheap tegra 2?

Don't forget carrier subsidies. T-Mobile carries the Galaxy Tab 7 Plus at $250 with contract, where I'm sure Huawei is eating Samsung's lunch with the $100 Springboard. A Tab2 at $200 or, if they can manage it, $150, would probably fair better.

No US price has been announced yet as far as I know. Don't let the Swedish prices throw you off - prices in different regions are dictated by many market forces beyond just currency exchange rates.
For example, right now, the Swedes can buy a Galaxy Tab 7 Plus, 16GB WiFi only version, for about 320GBP from Amazon.co.uk (about 500USD) or the N version from Amazon.co.de for about 350 euros (about 460USD).
But for us yankees, Amazon US has the same device for only 350USD.
So even based on the prices in the OP, the Tab2 is coming in about ~50USD cheaper for the WiFi only version vs. the Tab 7 Plus.

I was surprised to not see a thread created already in General Discussion for this topic.
As AndroidandMe reported last week, ASUS was rumored to be creating the first Nexus branded Tablet with a price between $200-$250. As the week went on, more rumors swirled (and are starting to look pretty solid at this point) that ASUS will in fact be making the first Nexus (7") Tablet featuring stock Android 4.0, a dual-core Qualcomm processor (potentially the Snapdragon S4) and is looking to be priced at $149!
At this point, even though the first Nexus Tablet won't be a quad-core, this is looking like a really sweet deal. I personally will probably replace my Kindle Fire with this if the specs stand true.
Anyway, just figured I'd start a discussion. Here are some source links:

It does sound pretty good except I can't bring myself to pay more than $150 for a 7" tablet. I would pay $200 for a 10" tablet but no more than that. It might be because I got a TouchPad when it went on the fire sale. Now I want all tablets to be that price. I blame HP. LOL
Make it 10' -> (As screen is bigger, more allowed internal space, the price goes up).
I would pay $300 or $350 for a 64 Gb 10 inches screen.
Profit!!!
I am really curious to the specs the end result is going to have. Even more because this even lower price than said before. It sure is going to be a nice gadget.
If it is anything like the memo i can see this being a massive hit. Put in either an S4 or a Tegra 3 like the memo a 1280x800 IPS display and micro sd card and people will see this at a store then see the price then see it on their receipt. I myself have a transformer that's almost a year old and I would pick one of these up as my go to tablet and the TF as the work tablet (keyboard dock)
Would be good to see a Nexus tablet, there are no GED tablets out there*
Xoom doesn't count as it is ONLY the wifi version that was on sale in ONLY the United States. Though if they really want to to take off and go head to head with the dedicated 200~ tablets they need to improve their ecosystem, open up google movies, books and music to more countries
I would be very interested in a 10"+ tablet, 7" doesn't do it for me. Bigger the better.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I'm not sure why people are talking about 10" tablets - aren't there plenty of those around? The 7" Nexus is clearly a direct response to Amazon's success with the Kindle Fire (if rumors are to be believed even Apple is paying attention), and in order to compete with it they need to be at $200 or below.
At $149 I doubt they will be using the S4/Krait, but we can always hope. In any case, I was more than a little tempted by some of the crappy ~$140 Chinese Cortex A8 tablets available. $149 for a Nexus tablet, even if it's only a dualcore Snapdragon S3, is an insane deal.
I do hope Google brings out two types of nexus Tablet. A $249 10 inch tablet and a 7 inch tablet at $149.
I think if they can do the two above and make the Tablets desirable I really think the Android Tablet ecosystem could really start to kick off
I already have a 10 inch tablet, but would very much consider this for a second. The Nexus is the selling point, as long as battery life were excellent I am on board.

But where would you put a 10 foot tablet?
im kind of disappointed if the memo370 is being discontinued and downgraded and being replaced with the rumors of the new specs. Google is obviously not liking the fact that the kindle is built off the blackberry playbook chassis and the tweaked OS that provides google with zero commission. In any case I hope they undercut the kindle fire in price if they do but its hard to say im looking forward to it when amazon is expected to come out with updates. Honestly, they need to come out with a 10" ipad killer that costs half the price or else they won't change the game.
It would really suck if this tablet replaces the asus memo. Me and my friends were all going to get one. And if this new nexus is just going to just be a dual core, then how is it any better than the nook tablet? They're probably going to get rid of the micro sd card slot like they've been doing. I'm just salty because I was looking forward to the memo
The last months, I began to get interested in Tablets and nearly bought a Lenovo Ideapad and a (shame on me) iPad, but i could resist. But when the rumours are true I buy one, even when its "only" a Dual-Core.
Normally I´m interested in a 10" (or more like the Samsung 11" and the Toshiba 13") , Quad core Tablet with Keyboard Dock. 7" is too small for a couch, but for rhis prize, with google Support I cant´t say no
Looks like this is being pushed back until July to try and shave off manufacturing cost to keep it at the $199 mark.
I've been looking to get a tablet for some general gaming and thought this might be a good one to look at. Hopefully the specs are decent otherwise I may have to pay a little extra for something that will play most games well.
Regardless though, it is good to see Google, Asus, Nvidia (and anyone else involved) trying to create tablets for the mainstream with good specs at a great price. This can only be good for the Play Store and the tablet market in the long run.
Anybody know a cheap tablet thats 40 - 100 dollars that has good development (like roms and such?) "cough" CyanogenMod "cough"
Legally, no. Here is a free lesson in life. Sometimes, you have to save up to get something you want.
The nook hd+ is pretty decently priced these days —*at least given the specs!
I had gotten the galaxy tab 2 7.0 for about 125 online.
There are some cheap chinese tablets on DealExtreme under $100, but don't expect any fancy specs.

I understand a budget but if you can budget a small amount of money to put away say each week you can have the tablet you really want
I got an HP Touchpad with a great screen (a couple scratches on the back) for $105 shipped. It's running CM9 like a boss with everything working, I played Tekken 3 on it last night with zero lag.
This was on Swappa I found it.
edit: the ones they have are overpriced right now, but look daily. You can also check locally.
This tablet is awesome 9.7" WVGA screen with a dual-core snapdragon and a gig of RAM, has Jellybean ROMs and everything (just bluetooth doesn't work)
You can also check Craigslist for people getting arid of their old tablets if you're on a tight budget.
