Basically I installed CM7.1 onto my stock desire s using the free version, its taken me about 6months to pluck up the courage to root and install the custom firmware, everything has gone swimmingly except for a few random hiccups I'll look into eventually. I'm noob when it comes to programming and coding and hacking, I literally follow instructions and cross my fingers, toes, eyes....you get the picture. Anyhoo, I'm considering buying CWM premium from the market in a few days but I'm reading mixed reviews so I'm wondering, who has it, is it worth getting it over the free version, I'm not in any particular hurry, but it would be great to get some feedback. Also sorry of this is in the wrong place but thanks for taking the time to read! *peace*

No!!! 4ext recovery is more organized and better for me.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
cwm premium only expand your options to control the cwm without rebooting in recovery first. it gives u just a little more comfort if u want to change your rom, create backups, etc...
if u don't have the delight to try new roms every week or something, u really don't need cwm premium
I would echo what the 2 guys above me said! Go for 4ext recovery and pay for the app "4ext recovery control" if you want to support the dev, and it opens up a lot of nice features!

Go for the 'premium' version of 4EXT much better for this device.
Thanks for the prompt reply, I'm looking at 4ext and its sounding great but before I get that I'm wondering if it is as convenient as CWM in terms of..does it have a catalogue of roms I can install at will? I have to confess that as most reviews are saying 4ext is the best tool for root users, I will probably get it but I have to navigate my way up a steep learning curve and I'm not sure if I should start getting stuck in or carry on doing a lot of sifting through blogs and articles. I'm a great believer of "if it ain't broke don't fix it(unless I'm hacking it to play bootleg games- already wowed some people on the train by playing final fantasy 8 on the HTC with my wiimote..hehe I feel like "bow to my superior handset" but really I don't wanna stop Modding till my phone is capable of teleporting people.)" Maybe I should think smaller for now XD.

I believe that you're confusing CWM with ROM manager.
CWM is a recovery product like 4EXT.
There aren't that many custom ROMs on this device that are available through ROM manager.
I wouldn't go for it. The premium package doesn't include something significant changes and updates or options.
I would just stay with the good ol' free CWM!
+1 4ext is the way forward!
I was in a similiar dilema, bought it, and never looked back
It's worth it, much better than cwm+clockwork app.
Only advantage of clockwork app is it has a cool download rom support within the app!
But we don't really need that feature as there aren't a vast majority of ROMs we have with ota support anyway.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
Blegh! Well spotted Ben_pyatt! Actually I do mean rom manager premium rather than CMW, I assumed, as I searched clockwork mod after using revolutionary tool, then got rom manager that they were one and the same. Let this be a lesson that assume does make an ass out of u and me. In this case me. Lucky my assumption didn't lumber me with a 300 quid brick complete with gorilla glass... ok, 4ext definitely needed as a recovery tool, real question is do I need rom manager premium?

No fear they are written by the same person.
to add weight to the getting 4ext a new version if it was released lady night and the recovery is now completely touch controlled, the author had raised the bar got recovery programs, check it out

You could have a duel boot setup to have both in one device, easier than switching backups. I'm gonna give this a run, any kernels work best for this?
Loaded this up, slow I expected. No on board keyboard that I got to work. The physical keyboard did not have functional numbers that I got to work. I could not get the power button to work either.Nice work though, looks good.
So, sent from my mobile. What's new?
sorry to bother, but i've a question.. i've got a samsung i9003 that has chipset mostly identical to droid, the rest of the hardware is different, i know, phone, gps, wifi, etc. it is possible to recompile kernel from milestone to samsung, knowing the differences, and adding the kernel modules to make it work? gingerbread for this phone is arriving next month, but no rom have been spotted, but i hopo... sorry to invade your section, but i wanted to ask to some developers and i hope a good reply... sorry for my english.
True, the original software isnt meant for phones BUT, he just managed to boot it on a phone, opening up the possibilty phone use. I want to know whats required to get it working.
I loaded up the rom and it works but there are missing elements, without them it is pretty much useless. I had no wifi or data so I could not load anything on it. Neat to play with though, needs a 1000 MHz kernel just to tinker with.
kind make me happy i made the choice of buying this phone in july last summer.
How about root access? Flashed another overclock kernel pushed setcpu but no root access
Very impressive although for phone use doesn't do much there. Plus I can't use the power switch to shut device on and off
did this project die? hopefully not just seems no development has happened in a while
Really, its not going to get any better than this. Only reason I ported it to my phone was because I wanted to see what it would look like. Then people started requesting ports. This was never and will never be anything close to a DD. Its just something fun to flash and play with for a minute, then go back to your ctual rom.

What's up XDA. I have officially decided to start developing since the Sidekick 4G doesn't have alot of developers. I was about to start before but I changed my mind because I didn't feel like learning java (which i'm learning now). I already know VB, Python, Lisp, and a little C and I already use Linux Distros all the time. I am working on a Red Gingerbread Themed ROM called FreshBlood. It will probally be released in about 2 weeks. I'm in the 11th grade and don't get out of school until 4:10. I get home about 5:00 and go out straight outside to play basketball, football, or hit a J. On weekends, it's Rockband and CoD modding. Therefore, my projects will take weeks, even months, to complete.
I just need to know a few things:
1. What's the best Linux Distro to setup my workstation
2. I'm using a tutorial I found on google. Where can I find good a tutorial for Java
3. What other tools will I need. I think I have them all
1. although I personally use and prefer archlinux, the guides for compiling refer to dependencies for Ubuntu 9.04,9.10, and 10.04, so those would be the easiest to use if you don't want to have to hunt endlessly for packages.
2. unless you're making an app, you won't be using Java. I would suggest searching around the forum for the mod that you're looking for, and most people will post the source of their mod, or at least explain how they did it. for this you'll need to look at baksmali and smali.
3. you'll need baksmali, smali, adb (android sdk), patience.
It's dangerous to go alone!

Wow, this is all overwhelming but I'm pushing to understand it all.
Do research and make about 10 test roms before you even think about releasing a official one .
Basically, the results of desmali'ing a file, is the mnemonics/syntax field of that document. ANything that is not there, should be regular language (method, void, etc, regular java). If you know java, that file + what you know, is desmali files.
You still working on this? Not trying to rush at all. Just curious.

Hi,
In the time you've been waiting for an answer, you could have made a nandroid backup, visited THIS FORUM,and picked, say, the most popular ROM.
You could then install it and see for yourself what it is like.
Each ROM thread has a brief description of what it is like, and the whole process would take 20 minutes.
If you don't like that one, choose another.
Why wait for someone else's OPINION,when you can make an informed decision for yourself.
Just saying.

I would say Android Revolution HD, but you should try different roms with different kernels to find one that suits your need.
I think there are 2 separations, Sense or non-sense, decide which side then try some roms =]

and to the guy who posted that -
Android is by far the most customizable OS out there.
Wait for a weekend or some other free time, read for about an hour and do it yourself. You can add or remove anything you want anywhere if you know how. If you cant be bothered reading or cant understand the explanations on how-to do whatever youre trying to accomplish, dont root your phone. Until then you're better off selling your phone, buying a nokia, reading up on android from basics and buying another android phone when youre done being helpless.
You claim youre a 40 year old biker. Unless you've been biking for a living, you'd have some basic computer skills. Thats all you need.

It's definitely different and original, which I like. Hard to get a real feel for it since it's basically a non-working demo at this point. Lots of swiping all over the place to do everything. But it looks pretty clean and has some cool features like the favorite apps bar and easy app switching/multitasking.

Builds for the GS3 variants is just a developer preview, I'm guessing we won't see a solid functional build for any device until the source code drops which will probably be around the same time the Ubuntu phone is announced/released. Truly unique experience, lots of swiping and great for multi tasking which I do a lot of. Wasn't too thrilled with the dock system but I suppose it's worth getting use to. The ability to dual boot ubuntu touch/android will be the selling point for most ppl.

So far the mods to TW have been quite impressive, Nottach's Framework for example and P-ROM. Still would very much like a true pure Android experience that I can play with and mod myself. This is a perfect example of not reading the threads. Do you even know what to do with the fix when you see it? will you know how to apply it? Not bashing you, but sir, I think before you even see a fix, you need to read way more, what is Cyanogen? is it some kind of recovery method? answer to your question is yes, it allows to run other modified TW roms also. Uh, I'd listen to your own advice there, chief.
He didn't even have a question, and from the way it sounds he is plenty aware of the difference between a custom ROM and a recovery. What are you talking about?
And OP, I think I'm having the same dilemma...the mods that have come out for TW have been amazing - and honestly I don't know of any specific features on AOSP ROMs that I DON'T have right now.
And let's be real, I enjoy it when people were are like, "ooh, is that an S4?" And I respond by turning off a random TV in the area, or by scrolling through my gallery just by waving my hand. I'd miss that I think
So yeah I'll definitely unlock once available, but I'll most likely stick with stock-based ROMs too.

Your right, I was actually commenting on his TW opinion, it is a comment. And I prefer TW roms also. more stable.
Choice is always a good thing, just because you have a unlocked bootloader doesn't mean you have to get rid of tw.
For me I always like to just fix what ever I feel is wrong or missing or locked out from a stock rom.
At the end of the day people have to use what makes then happy.

I think you're on crack. LMAO. It hurts to ponder what you THOUGHT you read.
And I did forget to mention the IR blaster. But they're is finally an alternative to SmartON. Try SmartRemote made specifically for the S4 but it is $9.99. It does allow you to make custom remotes so you can place buttons from any device all onto just 1 remote. Also allows custom commands through Pronto HEX codes.

It's all good. I've woken up a few times still half asleep having that same problem.

Yes I love Cyanogen and it would be nice to have a recovery but what about all the great things from TouchWiz.
If Dan does have an unlock and does release it then yes I probably will unlock but I don't think I can part from TouchWiz. Yet...
Since I bought my wife an S4 also we use S-Beam for sharing pictures of the kids a LOT! That brings me to my next point, the camera is ridiculously good. I don't need to mention how handy the multi-window is...
Will probably run modified stock Roms. Comments?

I am surprised to find I am starting to feel the same way. I've modified, configured and optimized the stock ROM quite a bit now and it is running very nicely. Looking forward to flashing a custom recovery so I can backup and restore and experiment with what's out there, but it's going to be a tough decision to run modified stock versus CM. I have also found battery life to be excellent with the Stock ROM.
Been trying out the new Samsung features for a while. To me they're nothing more than gimmicks. They're great for making a cool looking commercial, but mostly useless in real life. Air gestures? Please....I'm an adult, how often are my fingers too filthy to touch my phone? The eye tracking features worked sporadically, at best. And not at all in a dimly lit room. Can't wait to unlock this bootloader, flash a ROM, and get rid the mountain of Samsung bloat apps...not to mention AT&T's contribution to that mountain...

I jump back and forth between these two ends of the opinion spectrum in regards to TW and Samsung's (AT&T's) stock ROM. This is probably the first android phone that I could honestly be okay with never flashing a custom rom on. I will still unlock the bootloader when it becomes available. I will still flash a custom recovery (nandroid backups are a really nice thing to have, and I'm disappointed that carriers don't include this) when it becomes available as well. I *might* flash a custom rom based on the stock rom, but I think I'd rather stick to stock as much as possible, at least for some time.
As for the gimmicky features it comes with, I sort of agree, yet it's fun to show off to friends. I normally keep the gestures and eye scrolling turned off, and I keep the NFC turned off when not in use. I did buy the $9.99 remote app, and I'm surprisingly content with it. I need to offer some feedback about being able to actually drag/drop to change the order of the buttons on the other screen, but otherwise it's so much better than the WatchOn stuff that I have recently frozen using TiBu.
And on to speaking of freezing apps. With root, I'm pretty content. I can use TiBu Pro (to anyone reading this, go buy the Pro version - it's completely worth it!!) to freeze all the bloatware that I don't like. Every few days since I got my phone, I re-evaluate the list in TiBu and check into any blaotware I haven't frozen yet. "Do I need this? Have I used this? Nope! Frozen." I've done this for nearly all of the "Samsung ____" apps, including the Samsung store and all the associated apps (Samsung account, etc.). Did the same for every "AT&T ___" app that it came with - they're all garbage to me. Next on my list to evaluate and possibly freeze is all the printing services - do I really need to print from my phone? Maybe if it were my work phone...
I suppose one good reason I would want to flash a customized stock-based rom would be to free up some space. Having a 16gb version is no different than my S2 was... but I definitely had a few more GB's of room to store all the cool photos. And with larger picture files, and a faster camera, the storage is suddenly a bit more important to me.
And finally, the camera, and its associated apps/modes. I see a lot of people freezing some of the apps that allow some of the cool modes this camera can use. I'm not a professional photographer, but I love taking awesome pictures with this phone. It rival's my wife's Nikon 9300 point-and-shoot, with the exception of the Nikon's zoom lens. But as far as features and quality are concerned, it's possibly better.
This thing has been pretty smooth since day negative-one for me. Even better when we got root and the bloatware was frozen. Even snappier and better on battery once that first OTA dropped. I'm pretty impressed, and it certainly is a huge step up from my S2 running CM10.1.
TL;DR: I really like the stock rom and all the cool things it offers. The performance is great. I do like some of the gimmicky things, even if I rarely use them. With the root ability to freeze things I don't use, I could definitely see keeping this thing "stock" for this device's lifetime.
PS: It's also nice to see the "Official" status, as though I haven't violated the phone too badly...
Couldn't agree more. As you all mentioned, the security of having a custom recovery + Nandroid really opens up a lot of ground for flashing new mods and having the comfort of that fallback instead of only being able to Odin back to stock if I jack something up (which has NEVER happened or anything...lol).
@Aou I too use a Titanium Backup Pro and freeze the bloat. But I kept the Samsung Apps because it had some that you can't find on Google like the Video Editor app.
Let me remind you that the Xposed framework adds new functionality without the need to flash roms. As you can see from the screen shot I was able to mod the screen without touching the framework. Easy and reversible.

I don't unlock and root my devices to get rid of the stock interface (Touchwiz, Sense etc) i simply do it for a better rom with tweaks that makes it faster and battery life better..
and when i finally get sick of my stock interface ill flash a AOSP rom
i know some people disagree but i think the stock rom on this phone is laggy.. even after disabling S Voice and Smart stay/Air view
Wierd I couldn't add the image.
There we go lol

O you must be working in an extra clean environment. I know I don't. My hands get dirty often and these air gestures work for me.
Aside from that, what I am looking forward to is being able to have a pattern unlock And lock screen widgets at the same time. Unless Samsung releases an update for that.
