[Q] Throttling... No Pitchforks? - Captivate General

Is there a way to "Hack" the throttling service on roms? I Noticed my service has gone to crap lately.
I did some digging around and found out about this "thottle.src" (or something) that is running on my phone. It links to a sort of settings file in /data/system/throttle.
I've played with removing and deleting this sort of "throttling key" file and have realized it is honestly limiting my down speed (upload is not effected in my tests).
If I delete it and do a speed test real quick, I can get around 3.5mbps before this service re-downloads this file.
After this file appears again, I'm limited to 0.3mbps... Upload however is never effected and is a solid 1.5mbps.
It seems there is a lot of back and forth with this on the forums/net. Some people say its not possible for carriers to limit data speeds via the client handset. Others are just as curious as I am, or have seen the throttling themselves as I have.
With everything this community is about... I would have for sure thought this would have caused a explosion by now?
So Do we understand this service in its entirety yet? Can we get rid of it? Is it something that can be baked into roms?
I personally want this throttling sh-tuff to pound sand.

I found this method to getting rid of the throttling mess:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/1...riers-data-throttling-on-your-android-device/
Looks as though there are theme issues, and wireless network settings no longer work afterwards...
This is over a year ago?! And the community hasn't beat this to the ground yet?

Well I was successful in removing the throttling service from my cm7 181 nightly...
AND WHAT DO YA KNOW!?!
I'm getting my old speed again... ~2-3mbps down and that constant 1.5mbps up.
So its not a myth,
No I didn't have a Icon in my status bar informing me that i was being throttled,
Yes it would continually re-download some strange key file.
and now, with nothing else changed but removing the throttling service... I'm back up to speed.
Just an FYI if anyone in the future end up in the boat I just climbed out of...

[Q] Data Throttle

A coworker and I were comparing download speeds yesterday and noticed that our speeds initially launch high but then instantly drop down to lower speeds.
He did some research and found that the Incredible and Incredible 2 have a hack that modifies a .jar file on the phone removing the "data throttle." He installed it and instantly doubled his speeds in our side by side tests.
I have read threads going both ways on the "Verizon throttles" debate, but would rather have the possible throttle removed vs believing Verizon and leaving it alone. It can't hurt anything to run it... so why not!
Previously I had a Fascinate and did not see such a hack either. Does such a Mod exist for the Charge or any Samsung phones?

To my understanding, ROMs that are pushed out by Verizon to HTC phones have that data throttling script. When I was on Fascinate, I did look into that, but Fascinate rom didn't have that script, hence no data throttling mod needed. Not sure about Charge though.
Be interesting to see if this is an option. I also noticed the bandwidth throttling.

If I remember right the devs removed the data throttle or put in script to disable it way back in the superclean roms. I think sbrissen was responsible for coming up with the fix, but I may be mistaken.

Droid charge Data throttle removal ?

Hey guys was just wondering if its possible to edit the services.jar file or something similar like that on the droid charge to remove data throttling ? I have done this before on my droid incredible through CWM so I was just wondering if it's doable on the droid charge, much appreciation to any comments, theories, etc.
1+ here too, would be great!

I forget the exact answer but I remember them saying it wasn't possible on this phone.
Can we confirm this?
Pretty sure this hack doesn't work for Verizon, just Tmobile. I read somewhere that Verizon throttle's data on their end(server-side), not through code on your phone.
I could be wrong, but this was tested thoroughly when I was using my OG Droid.

It would almost have to be server side. Otherwise a data heavy user could just keep switching phones when one gets throttled. I've seen/heard of VZW doing some stupid stuff but I'm pretty sure they know anything done locally on a phone can be bypassed by hackers.
Wow, I didn't even know verizon had data throttling. I've used 11.367 gb this month. I'd be great if there was a work around to the throttling.

Seems like if you didn't even notice verizon was throttling you then its a non-issue and you have all the data speeds you needs.

If the services.jar edit can be done (I haven't looked because it doesn't do anything), it won't do anything to prevent you from getting throttled. If you look at the history of the modification, it only ever worked on one carrier, and even now, I think the carrier the mod use to work for implemented a new solution, so it doesn't do anything for anyone. Verizon and other carriers are going to impose bandwidth throttling on the network back end, not on the phone, as it should be done. One, it is much easier to control this way, users can't by-pass it, and the network hardware is built and designed to do this task already, the phone isn't really setup to do this.

[Q] Data-Cap Bypass Method-just maybe

Could this method have actually been a true working bypass at one time, if in fact it is not working now ?
http://www.techofweb.com/technology/disabling-data-throttle-g2x.html
Do you think with some more devlopment it could be operational again?
NOTE: I myself did not confirm if the method worked or didn't. I just read comments below. Yes I did assume comment must be correct. based on how tmobile controls there own servers. I really hope I am wrong!
just would like to know if anyone has any up to date information that is relevant to the matter.
Nope. Forget about it, there is no way you will ever bypass data capping. This method worked a long time ago, but now it useless.
Dude the only way you will get more data is to pay more money stop trying to buck the system before you completely screw up your phone and then you have a brick. Tmobile has their new Value plans and you can upgrade to a 10 gig high speed cap for $55 its only $25 more if you cant afford that then you probably should not have a fancy smart phone in the first place. Sorry to be so blunt but it just anoyes me thats just my opinion you dont have to agree with me.

Complain about electricity
Who really cares if i am trying to buck the system.
Why not go send letters to consumers and ask them to limit their usage so we could all get cheaper rates. I don't care if i lag a little. 2mbps is a perfectly good dl speed. at that speed i would assume t mobile could elimante data caps.
10gb isnt really alot considering what the hardware and software is cababpale of doing. now im not talking about using the autobond but why is the speed limit on a stretch of highway limited down from 70 to 15.
i wouldnt be suprised in 10 years if standard is 1gbps

ciq thoughts

Ciq well I honestly believe it.doesn't matter
Maybe battery is the only real saver
With or without ciq you still send texts through a system
You still have to pull data
You still went to CNN.com on.4g and they had to process that and send data and receive data back and forth
and carriers can see that whether or not ciq is there
And they say they cant see
I say BS
Comcast says the same thing
They look at the aggregate data
(mmmmmhmmm)
The only way
carriers.couldn't track you I.see is.Unless you're always wifi and texting through Skype..
But then your ISP can track you
But then your so paranoid you use free Wifi hotspots.to stay hidden
..then you probably shouldn't own a smart phone
I honestly believe its people being over paranoid
If you own a smart phone your being tracked with or without gps..
Position can be triangulated based
off of cell signal
I prevented ciq from actually starting on 2.3.6
So its there and not.. but to completely remove
It and still think you're not being tracked is crazy...
If you commit a crime and they want to know where you've been .. Im sure all they really have to do is ask google
Cyanogen or not
Just my thoughts

Please don't rationalize that putting a keylogger on my phone without my knowledge is somehow okay because they will find out whatever I do anyway.
Sure they can read your texts, or tell where you are, that's the nature of being connected. But being able to log everything thing that is done on my personal phone is not okay. It goes beyond just being connected to the network, it's shown that it continues to log when you aren't connected to anything. I also don't care what it's used for. It can be used to find the cure for cancer, it doesn't matter. If you're going to invade my privacy in such a way, at least tell me up front so I can tell you to shove it.
This is like saying you can put cameras in my house because I shouldn't be doing anything wrong in the first place and if I am I will get caught anyway. Or in the case of what CIQ is saying, we'll put a camera in your house and record it, but we won't watch it.
Love it I def agree .. I just know the recording and not.watching is getting worse.. And ciq proves it
I think they can get get all the info they need without CIQ so to me what's the point of adding it? I think (my thoughts) it is more for LTE tracking and usage being it is new for At&t. I'm not worried but the more data my phone uses at some point I think will result in adding "to" my usage rather than them "At&t" deducting from my used data. When or who deciphers what is mine and what is theirs each month?

[Q] If your cell phone did this every day what you you do? Drop data connetion

My droid razr drops it's data connetion, just about every day. some times it fall's back on 3G, but most of the time not. Now vid two was not the best at showing what happens most of the time, but vid one is. I have better videos, but they have to much info about me to upload with out cuting them up.
So if video one happened to you every day, with 3-5 bars or -69 to -86dbm. What would you do?
I would like to know so I can fix it.
thanks
P.S I have tryed:
New sim, reboots( lots and lots of that), Uninstalling most 3rd party apps, Leting it stay off over night. ( the tech guy said to do that.) and not using the phone for 24h.

Bootloader is locked and even it was not locked, I still would not because it does not seem to be software. There is a week spot on the lower right side of the phone that "gives in" way to easy vs my S2 and the build of this phone should be better than that.
P.S maybe Verizon is just the biggest pile of crap on earth?
yeah i would just make sure its rooted and install a good rom for it it might work.

Correct. Changing ROMs will do little or nothing to improve the situation and might even make it worse. It's either a poor antenna design or, more likely, poor signal in your location.

You said it, not me...
For the super-premium prices they charge, Verizon should be willing to help. T-Mobile US offers free home signal boosters to those who need them. Maybe Verizon has a program like that.
Sent from HTC G2
I don't think a signal boost will help if it drops data even in a 5 bar place and I can see the cell tower.
It just did it again and fell back on 3g. I was geting 4-5 bars, unsure if it's reading dbm right.
Edit: Free signal boosters and it does not cost you more $ per bill? If 100% free thats cool, AT&T does not do that for free, but never needed form them.
My data connection drops in the weirdest places!
underground shops for example, always have full bars..
out in the open.. no bars
I would be complaining to my service provider! but the few suggestions to root and rom your stock cell might work.. however rooting is not for everyone. so I would look for other solutions first. Make sure you have the latest firmware installed for your device and if you are still having issues, then maybe consider root.
bootloader is locked, so no roms. there is root, but i don't know how well it works yet.
I think the hardware has some kind of isuse. i think the battery reader is bad and is feeding the phone fake info. I will need more time to know for sure.
Try a different phone on the same provider and a different provider on the same phone.
Then either change provider, phone or both.
The phone is locked and even if you could unlock it, it uses bands no one else uses.
There are some good things about the EU like:
1) cell phones are all gsm and there for hot swapable.
2) 100mbs internet all over.
3) You make some fine cars.
Back on topic: I don't have a phone to swap sims with on same provider.
Thanks for the input and thanks for the worlds fastest car.
