I mean this is literally ALL OVER Google news right now. The best of these articles I think comes from Forbes. I only say that because it's actually a bit longer than most the other articles I read about this subject. With more original text, not so much copy and paste the same facts to boot.

I've found this software on our Captivates. It will appear as "Mobile Tracker Settings" in the Running Processes tab under Manage Applications. They say it's as easy as Flashing Cyanogen to get rid of the software. As the CIQ program has kernel hooks built into the stock kernel from samsung. So who knows all the things that could actually be hiding in all of those leaks we've been using...
What do you have to say about it? I didn't see a thread around the Captivate area. And the article specifically mentions Samsung and HTC among others.
NOTE: I probably should have clarified originally, that I AM RUNNING STOCK FROYO 2.2 KB1
I've been reading some of those same articles. You have to love how (with the legal departments of the carriers and manufactorers supposedly overlooking all the operations) none of them overuled the idea of putting spyware on a phone and their possible massive legal exposure!
Granted, I'm not the sharpest hammer in the box, but I don't see an app by that name running or installed in the KK4 build I'm currently running. Maybe some devs can enlighten us.
There isn't CIQ in the Captivate. Period

Too bad. I was kind of hoping to get in on the inevitable class action lawsuit. I hope this ends up being big enough to run CarrierIQ out of business...and give a big one-finger slap to the carriers involved. SOBs.

KK4 is a leaked build so maybe it hasn't been implemented yet as it's not an official release. BUT MY STOCK HAS IS OFFICIAL AND HAS CIQ.
OP Updated.
We don't need multiple threads about this.

I've read the sticky "[HOW TO] Galaxy S I9000 ROMs (Eclair & Froyo) on Captivate" and it seems like they're talking about the Eclair 2.1 release most of the way through. Does Froyo work for the Captivate in any way? If so, then does it have any problems that cannot, as of yet, be fixed? Also, how do I do it? I'm new to all of this and want to make sure I don't end up with a bricked device. I'm not scared to do it though, and will benefit from all the improvements 2.2 has to offer (in addition to rooting it and the lag fix and what not). Thanks for your replies!
I havent seen anything stating froyo was running anywhere for the phone.
There are pre pre pre pre pre release versions of froyo out for the I9000 which is mostly compatible with the captivate. These current froyo firmwares are unstable at best and don't really yield any benefit over sticking with eclair for now =P
It can, but not well. The errors are stated on the front of that thread you linked towards the end of the first post.
Speaking of froyo, I came over from vzw(still have them as well) but haven't seen any mention and would Like to know the answer to this, when is the captivate slated to get froyo? I would like an easy answer and not to get flamed. Thanks n advance

Officially September (in corporate time probably November)
Unofficial ROMS will probably pop up in September also we have to port most of them over
It's not CONFIRMED, but a few have "inside sources" saying that there will be a release sometime in September.

No one knows for sure. Possible rumor for the end of September. That is just a rumor because Samsung tweeted about a GPS fix at that time. Now in no way am I suggesting it is coming out during that time.
Shouldn't this really belong in "General"?
That way people can maybe keep this forum for DEVELOPMENT only.
Thanks for the answer guys. Just curious. I read somewhere that the new JiT in froyo was optimized for snapdragon and I actually believe this because the new Droid 2 with the to omap that we all know is a MUch better processor only score 12-14 in linpack. That doesn't make sense. And my Droid x with stock eclair will score as high as ID with froyo on all benchmarks. Hope we aren't n for the same disappointment that was froyo on d2

there are already many more threads about this than there needs to be. froyo was never officially released.

My fail... I can't find the "delete thread" option anywhere.
Its ok. The information seems to be true.
I don't recall seeing this info.
I think an important question to consider is just what exactly does an official AT&T release of Froyo do that the devs here have not accomplished already? Even if the release is official, it's not like it would be a great idea for those with good custom ROMs to step backwards. IMHO, the jump backwards to an official Froyo release laden with bloatware just isn't worth the time and effort.
Better question is why this thread is still alive in the Dev section.

Correct drivers, a kernel optimized for our specific model, modem designed for the North American region, etc.

There was no file download associated with this - it was just instructions on how to download it through Kies. The page mentioned that you could get the file but there was never a link to it. The original timestamp on it was 11-2-2011 (Feb 11, 2011 for us US people).

Yup, actual source code from our devices can improve all the custom ROMs in here.
Honestly, I doubt an official Froyo release can beat many of the roms here. So, while it would be an awesome step in the sense that we AT&T Captivate owners finally get our own version of Froyo, it'll still take some work by devs to get that up to par with the custom roms.

Yes. And it was a page that had been up for quite a while that was actually just a cut & paste for the Vibrant instructions.
Engadget dun goofed. They came across the meaningless page and foolishly jumped to the wrong conclusion without checking their facts.
Bad news is that if there ever is an update, it might have to be done with Kies.
Still waiting Samsung...
ha i laughed when i saw this thread, people will be on honeycomb before we even get froyo!
Waited and Waited
I waited to long. I just flashed Cognition 3.4. I thought I was gonna wait til it came out but after this post I finally gave up. I'll flash back to stock when it comes out. When ever that is!
Amen to honeycomb! And forget the "official" update. Thanks to xda and some world class developers this is like many have said nothing more than something to laugh at. Keep up the awesome work. I sure look forward to the future of xda and the devs!

I have been lurking this site for a few weeks now, following all the chatter about whether or not AT&T is going to deliver Froyo to the Captivate. I am a Captivate owner and just an hour ago I decided to forget about getting a stock Froyo build. So, I loaded my first ROM... Andromeda 2.2. That ROM is excellent and beats out Eclair 2.1 hands down. I don't think I will be turning back to a stock ROM now.
So long to waiting on AT&T and Samsung to pull their heads out of their arses and deliver product. I have the goods now.
Edit: A huge thank you to XDA and the team of developers working on Andromeda. They have turned out an excellent ROM.
the true update link is in the thread i just posted.

Is this suppose to be funny? GB that was MADE for your cappy vs a beta/rc version of GB that is ported and still has quite a few bugs?
As with everyone else, i'll get in line for the popcorn. Can I get a diet coke too?
Never gonna happen. at&t didn't give a single **** about releasing froyo on the captivate with any kind of speedy schedule and that was when it was new, do you really think that they will be johnny on the ball to release an update for a phone that's according to them, is at the end if its life? No, they will just push new phones on us cause that's where they stand to make the most money. And who cares if they do anyway? How many froyo roms do we know and love that started out as "ports that still had quite a few bugs"
stock sucks. End of rant.

That would rock if it happens, not gonna hold my breath though. So far every GB Rom has had the weird charge issue for me. I'd hope a build made specifically for the cappy would not have that problem.

i believe geo was asking if the i9000 was beta or not.. as the article says that gingerbread is coming to the galaxy s line... i9000 is the galaxy and we HAVE it.. right? no? well kinda!
the JVH/B that we already have for i9000 are the samsung firmwares from the firmware site open source versions.
NOW it is going to hit the carriers and KEIS.... bloat and other crap! yay~
Does this mean the source would also be made available?
Not gettin my hopes up...
When has official anything for our specific device ever been that great? Everybody was so excited about official at&t froyo update, it finally came, and never did blow anything we already had out of the water. As far as I'm concerned the devs will probably have something better worked up by the time official 2.3 drops.
My 2 cents.

This news is old. Plus this isn't even for our phone. The Galaxy S and the Galaxy S Series of phones is not the same thing.
Next subject.
If the article is true, then it does indeed include our phone, as it says the "entire Galaxy S family line". What's important to note then, is that it's the author of the article who uses those words, and that the actual press release does not (at least not the word "entire").
Old news? Sure. A while off? Definitely. But are we getting it? I'm pretty confident we are. It'll just be a while. But it does mean all those GB ROMs we want will have a much better chance of working, so I'm cool with that.
If I flashed in kies with cwm and what not would it screw anything up?
Sent from my SCH-I500
Do what? Flashed what in Kies?
On android central it says the update will be available in kies. I was just asking if I used kies would it conflict with anything.
Sent from my SCH-I500
Oh, well it problably won't be out for a good long while. But in the event that it is released I would think you would either have to revert to stock froyo to use Kies or wait for one of the Dev's to creat a ODIN package.
With that said. I honestly wouldn't be expecting this anytime soon. Chances are the carrier will discontinue support for this device before GB is made available. I hope I am wrong on this but who knows. Just have to wait and see.

Yes, don't hold your breath, it's best to assume the worst at this point. But believe me, if it does drop - the dev's will be the first to know and will be all over it.
If you guys are wanting to try GB, CM7 is 2.3....obviously not fully functional as with all AOSP builds (at this time).
That's why I love our Dev's. They keep us in the loop. When I see them saying its available then I'll have my coniption. Until then I am very happy with my Heinz flavored Froyo. As well as all the other thing they have made annd developed for us.

Probably have reached or are approaching the limits of what can be done by tweaking existing ROMs.
I'm not sure if we have anyone in the community that has the time and skills for an AOSP bringup and owns an Infuse. Once an AOSP bringup is complete, there are a LOT more options as far as places to take our device.

After coming from the x10 forum....i can wholeheartedly agree. Those crazy bastards did some outrageous stuff with stock. Heck they somehow shoved gingerbread on that thing before it even got 2.1 and thats with a locked bootloader.
Don't hate lol. As people have already said we already have some nice changes to the stock rom and more to come. I came from the Evo and had cm7...oh how that will be amazing.
From what I've read devs are working on cm but I don't know how that is going but at least its going. Devs have phones all they need it time I too hope its sooner rather than later.

Entropy512 wrote that at this point, the developers have done as much as they can by tweaking the stock ROM. In other words, not much can be done until another ROM is pushed from Samsung and the carriers. MikeyMike01 countered and said that this is not true at all. holland6045 agreed, and said that his experience with a certain phone is that a *lot* can be done by tweaking the stock ROM of a phone. CHUDLINGS said that developers are working on porting CM7, and that more time is needed. bignate78 mentions that (possibly) a Samsung-delivered Gingerbread ROM is likely to be released in Candada soon, and that this would speed up development.
Not being very familiar with the development status, I would summarize as follows: At this point, we are limited to tweaking the stock ROM. Although developers are working on porting CM7, many are waiting for a Gingerbread ROM to be pushed to the phone (likely in Canada first) so that they do not have to start from scratch.
[@Anyone: If I've misinterpreted anything, do correct me.]
I think the part about waiting for gingerbread to drop on the canadian carrier is the most accurate
who the hell wants to waste so much time getting it over from another gs device when it's nearly ready to drop in some form ?
Yeah. I believe gtg made a comment that there are a number of tweaks to Infused that he's not bothering with because he'd have to redo them when the Canadian Gingerbread release drops.
Alright, thanks for the info men.

No problem. Also thanks to the guy who pretty much translated that all for him.
Oh and just for the record, as an example of what you can do when you really want to with a stock fw: the devs over on the x10 forum (while not infighting ) effectively gutted the stock to the bare necessities and transplanted gingerbread onto that...because even though Sony got hacked, they do a darn good job at locking down a bootloader. But in the end they bypassed that too.
Also i must say i like the community here much better, a lot more friendly and helpful.
