[Q] Is Froyo 2.2 working on the Captivate? - Captivate General

I've read the sticky "[HOW TO] Galaxy S I9000 ROMs (Eclair & Froyo) on Captivate" and it seems like they're talking about the Eclair 2.1 release most of the way through. Does Froyo work for the Captivate in any way? If so, then does it have any problems that cannot, as of yet, be fixed? Also, how do I do it? I'm new to all of this and want to make sure I don't end up with a bricked device. I'm not scared to do it though, and will benefit from all the improvements 2.2 has to offer (in addition to rooting it and the lag fix and what not). Thanks for your replies!

I havent seen anything stating froyo was running anywhere for the phone.

There are pre pre pre pre pre release versions of froyo out for the I9000 which is mostly compatible with the captivate. These current froyo firmwares are unstable at best and don't really yield any benefit over sticking with eclair for now =P

It can, but not well. The errors are stated on the front of that thread you linked towards the end of the first post.

Speaking of froyo, I came over from vzw(still have them as well) but haven't seen any mention and would Like to know the answer to this, when is the captivate slated to get froyo? I would like an easy answer and not to get flamed. Thanks n advance

Officially September (in corporate time probably November)
Unofficial ROMS will probably pop up in September also we have to port most of them over

It's not CONFIRMED, but a few have "inside sources" saying that there will be a release sometime in September.

No one knows for sure. Possible rumor for the end of September. That is just a rumor because Samsung tweeted about a GPS fix at that time. Now in no way am I suggesting it is coming out during that time.

Shouldn't this really belong in "General"?
That way people can maybe keep this forum for DEVELOPMENT only.

Thanks for the answer guys. Just curious. I read somewhere that the new JiT in froyo was optimized for snapdragon and I actually believe this because the new Droid 2 with the to omap that we all know is a MUch better processor only score 12-14 in linpack. That doesn't make sense. And my Droid x with stock eclair will score as high as ID with froyo on all benchmarks. Hope we aren't n for the same disappointment that was froyo on d2

Oh my. +99
Sent from the future.
I await all ROMs with gingerbready Greatness!!
And to be honest, I thought we'd be a little ways into Jan before we seen the source code. Glad it took just 1 day after the Nexus S release. Now, the many-months wait for OEMs to get Official updates out to the devices =\
if that was sent from the future, that comment must mean that you are afraid for us because something is WRONG with gingerbread because you would have KNOWN about this already! LOL so HOW IS IT?!?!?
Yay!

Yet still no official 2.2 for us.... awesome.
Is this different from what was dropped last week?

How did GB source C drop before FroYo????????
If you are referring to what I posted, it was source code
For the Nexus S kernel Android version 2.3
And yes, pretty cute we have available source code for a new
OS before we seen a piece from any Android 2.2 source code for our Epic

I think the million dollar question is what are the predictions for an official 2.2
rom for our Epics? jk but I think after samsung and sprint gets ahold of it first.
Otherwise it would be another AOSP like cyanogen.
I've got a related (and hopefully not stupid) question regarding the process.
So, I know we're waiting for the 2.2 kernel source for our epics, obviously.
Generally, what's the process in between Google dropping a version's source, and it being released (by samsung) to us? This is not a complaint-- I'm really just curious how it works.

I know someone can explain better than I can.
Google drops the stock rom. This wont run on our phones without drivers, and support for specific hardware for our device. Then you have Sprint carrier modifications like VVM, ota updates, 4G and other configured apps. After all the work is done, developers can go back and modify things to their liking.
Otherwise you would have a from the ground up like CM,
where its a lot of trial and error, getting the ROM to support hardware/software.

I'm no developer or expert, but i'd give it a week or two before we see a slew of ROMs, maybe less. Its great that Cyanogen has 4G working on the Evo, so cant wait for 4G-enabled CM6/7 for our Epics. As for an official 2.3 update from Samsung.... March is my earliest guess

I'd say we get official 2.2 updates in a few weeks. The leak is out, so they are probably just cleaning it up for release. The plain-jane (no custom ROM) leak works flawlessly on my phone tho.
At this point Noobnl is going to deliver faster than Samsung is on the Froyo. He's got CM pretty much done it seems. Whenever Cyanogen's done with gingerbread source for CM7(im presuming) noobnl will hopefully start on that as well.
I bet that the hardware drivers for 2.2 will work with 2.3, sounds like 2.2 to 2.3 is a lot less of a change than 2.1 to 2.2, but I could be wrong.

For Samsung it's more rational for them to use their dev's time to spend on making new working firmware for new devices that are debuting at CES and to ready the firmware for those devices.
Samsung's strategy has changed over the years and is now executing the mantra "first out the door with new technology." While this is great for those of us who like new toys, it's a set back when we want long term support for our new toys. If their R&D resources are tied up working out new firmware for the next gen, they lose focus on their current customers.
If you've kept up on the latest engadget, gizmodo, boy genius, etc etc news - you'll know there's a dual core super duper galaxy whatever chip coming out soon. That's where the resources are now. For a company that has been lagging behind in innovation for the last few years in the mobile area, this is their new direction... Innovate quickly and be the first to market. Support resources are but a second thought; overhead.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-...uct-crisis-as-choi-tries-to-triple-sales.html might give you a better perspective of the company.
So if I am reading this right....
Once we have CM6 running on our epics it will be a lot easier for us to get Gingerbread installed; for that matter any new verisions?
Does this really need to be in the Epic section?

Cyanogenmod on Mesmerize?

Hey guys, I'm new to this whole android development, and of course I got a phone that has barely anything made for it... I'm wondering if there's a simpler way to get the clockworkmod recovery to work, like if someone can post a file that already has all that done...? And I'm wondering about cyanogenmod as well; it doesn't yet work for the Mesmerize, or any galaxy s yet, right? There were no sable versions on the CN website...
Any push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

As far as I know there isn't an easier way, I'll be more than happy to walk you through it if you would like. Shoot me a message with msn, aim, yahoo, or g-talk and I'll jump online.
As soon as the sales die down or someone around here lets go of one, I'm planning on getting another Mesmerize to use as a tester. This will also give me one to send to Koush to get us on the list of devices officially supported by CWM. As far as Cyanogen, that will/should come when 2.2 comes out for us, which is slated for Q1 2011. It shouldn't take much to get things working after that, hopefully.
Awesome, I can't wait! Thanks for the help guys. Ill figure out how to use gtalk now : )

And, just so I'm ready for it, when the Cyanogen comes out after froyo, I'll have to wait for the OTA update and then can do the cyanogen?
Also, will the OTA update come if I'm running the super clean ROM w/ voodoo, or a fascinated Mesmerize?
And which one of those paths would you suggest: fascinated or super cleaned?
Haha I have so many questions :s

No matter what direction you go, it's preference at this point, you will want to flash back to stock before you try to update to froyo no matter if it's OTA or a computer based upload. I can't say that it would definitely cause problems, but there is a good chance that the update wouldn't recognize that your phone was eligible for it.
Well it works on the Samsung Fascinate, which is the exact same phone as the Mesmerize;
So why wouldn't it work? the only difference is the carrier.
First off, that's not even correct.
Secondly, don't bring back ancient threads unless you're providing something of use to it. Especially don't bring back ancient threads just to turn around and start a new thread about it.
Closing dead thread which has already been answered elsewhere.

Gingerbread Leaked for Captivate. Infuse on its way?

http://www.androidcentral.com/official-gingerbread-233-samsung-captivate-leaks-out
Gingerbread seems to have leaked out for the Captivate. If gingerbread is in the works for an older device, that means its on its way for the infuse. Right? Right???
Hmm..im gonna check when i get to work later. Im a rep an usually know a week or 2 before an update is released. Normally they do release an update for more than one device. Froyo came out on the captivate an aria at the same time...and seeing the canadian infuse released with gingerbread id say its right around the corner...remember this is our top phone right now. And at&t wants it to stay like that for a bit.

i really dont understand why companies dont release phones with new software.
its kind of irritating waiting for a "Official Update"
How about is it possible to flash The Captivates Gingerbread to the Infuse? lol

I wouldn't count on it. Our phone appears to have a partition layout more akin to the original galaxy s and to top it off our hardware is pretty different, so I wouldn't trust it. People were bricking their infuses in the first week or so by getting a little too adventurous with Captivate stuff.

They don't release it with current software because changing the base software in the middle of the project probably pushes the risk beyond what they are comfortable with.

different drm (it can stream netflix)
smoother browser on Samsung devices which don't have the best browser performance on froyo
smoother/quicker market downloads updates and installs.
cool animations and effects for extra wow factor.
media encoding/decoding enhancements resulting in better quadrant scores.

GB Rom or Froyo?

Which is faster when using a voodoo kernel? As I understand it, voodoo kernels for GB just came out. What quadrant scores are you achieving on GB using a voodoo kernel?
Thanks in advance for any helpful replies and/or screenshots! I'm stoked to be a part of the Charge community when my phone arrives on Monday!

Froyo is faster and more stable atm.. I would suggest you start with Froyo.. and then try GB at a later time after you have a feel for the phone on a stable platform.
I agree with kejar31. You may be able to achieve a higher quadrant score on gb, but quadrant means nothing. Froyo is the way to go until the final release leak or the official release.

I am not even sure people are getting higher quadrant scores with GB even with the Lagfix
start with getting CWM and flashing a voodoo kernel, maybe flash rooted/debloated EE4 (my set up) and see how you like it... then test the waters maybe with Humble or GummyCharged, after you get the hang of the phone/flashing maybe then go on to GB and GB roms
blazing through on my VZ Droid Charge
I'm coming from a Fascinate previously running JT's CM7, so I'm very familiar with both Samsung and flashing. Having said that, (with no disrespect to those who aren't devs) I'll take the advice of kejar and start with 2.2.
I understand that source code is very important for further development to continue. Coming from a Fascinate, Samsung is/was/has been notoriously slow. Have there been any major OTA's/improvements released by Samsung to come along since the Charge was released, or should I expect to rely mainly upon the awesome devs here at XDA for support (as I did with the Fascinate)? Btw... thanks again for all you do, to all of the devs who support and make our androids useable/awesome/incredible/insert adjective!

yeah 2.2's a good starting point, its very much like the Fascinate... as for OTAs, I believe the Charge shipped with ED1, then got an update to ED2 and finally EE4 (what my Charge had when I got it). If I read correctly there have been several GB leaks (3 maybe?) but no official OTA or even announcement of it receiving GB. I believe it will (hopefully soon) seeing as there have been GB leaks indicating they're working on it and for the time being its samsung's flagship 4G device, I don't think they'd leave it high and dry (though I wouldn't put it past them with the whole fascinate debacle )

Official update to 2.3 by years end.

Just got off the phone with magenta about my wifes phone.
while on there I asked the tech agent if she had heard anything about an update to gingerbread for sidekick 4g. she confirmed that an UPDATE TO GINGERBREAD IS IN THE WORKS! and they are hoping to have it out by the end of the year.
made me happy, just wanted to let you guys know.

is this a joke or are u serious ?
No joke. I asked if it would be getting a 2.3 update and she said they are trying to make it so that by the end of the year all major (and sk4g is considered major) android phones will be on gingerbread. she specifically said sidekick will get 2.3 and I quote "There is no date yet, but they are trying to get it by the end of the year"
Of course, you have to keep in mind that I am taking someone elses word for it. albiet, it is someone "on the inside"
In the works is very different from saying "by year's end." Samsung makes builds and sends them to Tmo, but they never make it out to the end-user until they approve it. It's very likely that the sidekick will be one of the last of the "new" phones to get GB, as they have to add much more to our UI than just porting it to fit our processor, but also need to add the social parts of our phone (whether we want them or not).
P.S. GB has been "in the works" since the phone was released, it's all a matter of getting Tmo and Samsung to agree on what constitues a good/ releasable build.
I have the strange feeling that our sk4g won't ever get gingerbread officially t-mobile has a funny way of coming out with new devices rather than updating the original ones :-/ I forsee a new sidekick with gingerbread official coming out rather than us getting an official build. Don't quote me on it or anything its pure speculation but if I'm right give me some props or something lol
Not to say we won't find a way of porting the "new sk gingerbread" to th sk4g but I have a feeling the new device is more likely hell they may even release gingerbread for us and the new sk at the same time lol
The moral of this story is: personal opinions are fun. Aren't they? Lol

long wait...
For those counting, as soon as the GB source for the SGS4G gets released I can port their GB system to our phone, their ROMs/Kernels boot on our phones, they just don't have the drivers to do anything (like display what's going on).
The SGS4G has been getting leaked versions of GB for a month+ now, so the official GB release should be soon (hopefully).

I spoke with someone that works for Tmobile and was told Tmo and samsung have been working on GB for the sidekick for more than 3 months and im guessing its taking that long cause they are trying to make it very similar to our Froyo interface, unfortunately (along with the Tmo crap). Otherwise they wouldve gave us a GB ROM similar to the SGS4G. He said he doesnt know when it'll officially be rolling out but we should have it before thanksgiving (end of november). Thats pretty far to me.. but then again i have a vibrant and still never got an official GB release so take this info with a grain of salt. as the rest of us i sure hope its comes soon.
