These forums are getting littered with people asking for help after screwing up their phones trying to install CM7. Why are people who don't know what they're doing trying to install a ROM that is not yet fully functional? This should be left to devs who are trying to fix issues, not people who need their phones to work. I just don't get it.
I thought the topic was taken down.
Edit: Nevermind, the topic is still there. Imo though, I think it should be taken down and only progress be shown. Might prevent the massive amounts of bricking and general failure to read directions.

I bricked mine like 3 times trying to get "simple" Serendipity to work for the first time.
Gotta love the jig though. Didn't have one brick during the CM7 process though. Just a lot of resets back stock b/c of the mistakes.

Not sure if gingerbread is worth the risks, but I'm happy that there's lots of people trying it out so I can use a stable release in the future.

Yeah, but too many of those people are ending up in here looking for help when it goes bad. It just takes up space and energy better used to solve issues with actual working ROMs. Let the Devs do the development work that they're so good at.
Probably because CM is a big name dev and people think it'll be superior to what they're currently using, oh, and like it was said earlier, Gingerbread... I don't see what the huge fuss is about with Gingerbread, nothing huge has changed from Froyo and Ice Cream is already in development so I think Gingerbread will turn out to be like the early 2.0 Eclair build, something to skip over until a big update is available.
CM isn't what it used to be back in its hayday with the G1/Dream and MT3G/Magic, so I'm not sure what people are expecting... Nothing against the CM team of course, the entire team does great work even if the releases are taking a really long time compared to before.
I'll be waiting it out, if I get an official Gingerbread update for either of my phones, I'll do them, otherwise I'm going to wait for the next big update which is actually worth installing... But I agree, there seems to be a huge deal about a simple update for no apparent reason at all, Its not like the Eclair > Froyo update which improved performance by a good margin, so really, there isn't much to gain by installing Gingerbread other than a few UI improvements (which most of us won't see anyways since we all use 3rd party launchers).
Here's a perfect example of how dangerous this place can be sometimes.

She just joined, just got a Captivate and already she's asking about flashing CM7. Apparently, none of the warnings were enough, she's willing to take the advice of absolute strangers, some who are willing to push her onward.
It's that damn lock crt-off animation. It's our generation's version of the three sirens, and instead of sail boats, we have android phones

I haven't flashed it because I don't know what I'm doing, scared and too lazy to start messing with odin or the like, but I understand the urge. By all accounts it's stable enough. I'll probably give it a go within a few days. At which point, if I brick my phone, I'll get a new one and consider it a learning experience. Plus, based on what I read yesterday it's never going to be as simple as updating a .zip anyway, so I might as well cross that bridge sooner rather than later.

And yes, I'm not one bit ashamed of lusting for the obvious the gimmick. Gingerbread CRT out animation alone would be worth the risk, tbh, much less the whole gingerbread rom.
If people refuse to heed warnings, its their own fault.
As for Gingerbread, I can't speak for the others, but I want SIP support.
JVM improvements
Gingerbread claimed to have faster garbage collection and OpenGL among other things. It will probably have bigger memory footprint on a downside.
I will wait til Audience noise suppression support is there, which is likely never.
I will probably try it when Voodoo Sound and OC/UV are in the kernel, and all major bugs fixed. This likely to happen with the help of Galaxy S community.
I don't get the attitude towards being more AOSPish. AOSP is already out there. It is Samsung Captivate which needs native driver support to have all its internals fully functional.
I keep Torch 1.5 as a workhorse for now.

There is no aosp for the captivate. Cm is built from actual source compared to piece together roms...which have been good by the way. And why create a thread about cm7 and peoples motives for flashing? Its new...that's why I flashed it! I have never used cm before so I personally wanted to see what it was like. It is the best rom I have used for speed without any lagfix. People have started flashing phones since I have been a member with no experience...it is going to stay that way. It hasn't just started with cm.

True, but while every ROM has its share of issues, I see more posts from people who tried to flash CM7 and had it go horribly wrong than any other. It is a completely different animal as far as flashing goes.

Just saw that a successful alpha of ICS has been ported to the SGS so I think we're getting closer and closer. Once a full working version is up and running on the SGS I really hope that one of our devs will port it!

Honestly in all due respect, I tried contacting several people from Samsung and tried to get answers to all my question's from those bone heads. I think Samsung is dragging their feet on Gingerbread, this has nothing to do with At&t at all. At&t was ready to give us some sort of GB release back in August, seems to me Samsung keeps holding back because all their newer phones are getting the most respect right now and not our already 1 penny Infuse.

Samsung is a complete joke. This is like a bad OS software. EX: Windows ME!, theirs nothing they can fix so they skipped it creating another phone next to this, Basically the only phone next to this would be the SkyRocket, Shares all aspects of our beloved Infuse, just upgraded hardware and better Support, plus they are getting ICS in the beginning of next year.

I am running A6 as we speak which I got from these forums.
Camera doesn't work (for video or pictures)
SU doesn't work (haven't toyed with workaround yet)
3g (I am trying work arounds now, doesn't work by default)
Still a really impressive interface to play around with, and I think I can live with the cons for a little while until a more stable rom gets hosted. I will say I am in love with this os though.
The interface alone is so modern and fresh feeling I can't entirely explain it.

BTW welcome to the forum! READ lots, you will learn, also there are a lot of top notch guys on here that will help you out.

Yes I would recommend the CM9 version (or working towards it) if you want to try out ICS. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
The 3g works without any manipulations, almost everything works as a matter of fact. Calendar sync did need some .apk switched in to get calendar working in beta2 but at least for me in beta3 I didn't have to redo anything. All my apps from tibu work and download correctly. It just seems to be very smooth.
PS. I also upgraded to the ATT SGS2 and love it but I also have my cappy as backup and love messing with all the roms for it still. Basically testing it all out. Plus I am pleasantly surprised that the cappy got ICS before the SGS2.

yahh I'm on the Beta 1 dev version, I feel it is smoother, there is no need for scripts anymore, everything works without doing extra flashes(besides kernel and superuser). I get much better battery life out of this one too! The one from DemonWav's thread.

The issue is more likely to be not enough space on /system for all the crap VZW wants to add in. The Nexus S has 512MB of RAM and it runs ICS just fine.

I agree with all you started above till the last sentence.
Correct me if I'm wrong-
I've seen the update came out for Nexus S, was retracted and now owners are still waiting for the official release. A debloated ROM will probably run just fine on Charge, which you touched on in your previous post. That being said "Officially" I don't believe the charge will see ICS. I'm sure with your help along with JT and others, we will have it.

In regards to Verizon's upgrade list here; even though it isn't complete, I think it is ridiculous that carriers aren't more worried about getting their phones upgraded. I recognize that the manufacturers do the development, but you'd think that the carriers would try to light a fire under their ass.
Furthermore, I am rather upset that Verizon hasn't said anything about getting an HTC One phone.

Man I would love to be that optimistic. Unfortunately, I would bet cash money that even if they were to eventually upgrade the Charge to ICS, it wouldn't be until 4Q 2012 or later. In fact, I would be downright shocked if any of the phones they listed get ICS before 3Q.
By then, Jelly Bean will be just around the corner and ICS won't be enough anyway

I wasn't expecting an update at all anyway. HTC and T-Mo don't seem to be showing any interest in supporting the device more than in a very cursory way. They made their money off the device and are washing their hands.
The dev community has been the life of this device in my opinion since about the beginning of October for me. TBalden, Blue, and Undead are the reason I didn't bail and sell the device. I see no reason to change my decision simply because of HTC's affirmation that they don't care to support their customers.

I wouldn't go that far. Maybe great for some people, but still not quite there yet for me. But, I'm encouraged by the progress that has been made. I need a ROM that just works, everything works, without any "gotchas" or having to do anything extraordinary.. just works. That's why I stick with tweaked stock ROMs for now. My MT4GS is my only phone, I don't have a landline or another phone as a spare.
The ICS update is not really much of an issue... Get yourself a virtuous inquisition 4.0.3, I am running it right now since I got the doubleshot over eBay a month ago. Everything is working quite good and stable. Tbalden is stil working on it, he released kernel 3 a week ago, so the doubleshot is running up to 1.7ghz in case of need... don't whine, just get s-off, root and you'll get one of the most versatile qwerty smartphones out there...
Edit: you can check out Rootzwiki for more info...

To be honest, CM9 currently runs a litle better than Virtuous Inquisition. Less force crashes, a slightly more polished experience, and the battery life is a little better. However, Virtuous runs Nova by default and also has the MIUI style battery bar by default.
Recommendation: try both. A few less FC's and more polish vs. a few more shiny things and a little less stability.

Believe me I'm in the same boat and cm9 is working amazingly for me as a daily driver, everything that I need works though bluetooth is slightly buggy sometimes (though that may be my fault as I jumped right in after flashing and MAY have accidentally restored my stock 2.3.4 pairings. Trust me I deliver for a living so this phone is my lifeline and the devs have and will continue to keep it a stable lifeline at worst and a superior lifeline at best! Thanks for some great work and if I can ever help... drop a line. If any of you team ds devs are ever in my hometown hit me up for a beer or some pizza!

I had some serious issues with Cm9... WiFi not working, force closing apps, did not even managed to get mybackup working to restore my data, apps etc. Camera was not running properly and the launcher itself was not that smooth, compared to nova... I'll wait for the next update or the RC to try it out again, till then I am staying with vinq.
I suppose it's more or less personal preference which rom you choose atm
Edit: I get round 1 fc in 24h and when I start the app again, it's always working. Do not have any stability issues with the new kernel...

True... I should try vinq... but I know the support for CM has been fantastic so far and I'm kinda hooked on it so far lol! First time with ics and I never wanna go back.

Look, tbalden is working on both so you don't have to feel like betraying cm team or something like that... I mean I am switching from cm9 to vinq and back (right now staying on vinq because of the better experience) and trying things out. It's important for the devs that we do it to get rid of the errors...
I can recommend vinq, you can backup cm9, flash vinq, try it out (report errors) and then switch back if you don't like it... Not that I'm trying to convince you, just listing the options. Basically that is a question of 20 minutes to try a rom out, it's not like you will be formating your windows pc...
Cm9 has great support, I was running CM7 on my old Desire Z but ICS is just a totally different experience

Well... 20 mins is slightly low with flashing it from s-on... more like a day or two to test battery life and whatnot haha. Downloading now anyway.

Download corrupted since I was doing it on my phone and I haven't had a chance to download over a more stable connection because I'm moving and my internet is turned off will update when I get to download and try it out.
