Woah! Love this phone. - Captivate General

After dropping my first captivate in a river early this year, I finally got a new one a couple weeks ago.
I must say things have changed a lot around here, after reading for a few days I am finally caught back up on everything I missed
Awesome job guys, thanks for all the hard work you guys have put into keeping this phone current and awesome. I can't see myself upgrading for a while

We even have ICS!!!

i love it too!

lol. A lot of people thought I was crazy because I didn't want to wait a month for the atrix to come out.
Then another month for roms to come out.
So far I love my captivate.

ICS alpha 6
has anyone taken a look at the alpha available on pirate bay? i wanna know how to install it and if its legit. I can't post it cause i'm a new poster

There are already a lot of ICS threads on here. I believe the A6 ROM was posted on the "ICS ported to i897" thread in the development section.

I would never go there for roms.
I am running A6 as we speak which I got from these forums.
Camera doesn't work (for video or pictures)
SU doesn't work (haven't toyed with workaround yet)
3g (I am trying work arounds now, doesn't work by default)
Still a really impressive interface to play around with, and I think I can live with the cons for a little while until a more stable rom gets hosted. I will say I am in love with this os though.
The interface alone is so modern and fresh feeling I can't entirely explain it.

kjdoug............THIS is the only site you need to mod your captivate. forget any torrent site when it comes to the OS on your phone.
BTW welcome to the forum! READ lots, you will learn, also there are a lot of top notch guys on here that will help you out.

I noticed. I'm watching the dev thread, with excitement.
Waiting for more of the bugs to be worked out before I flash it. I use my phone for work so it has to be almost 100% stable

It just fits nicely in my hand and my pocket, All the new SGS2s all seem to large. IMHO

We have ICS? Which Rom?

and ICS beta1 works mighty fine, i might add!

So does CM team's Build 3....

Yes I would recommend the CM9 version (or working towards it) if you want to try out ICS. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
The 3g works without any manipulations, almost everything works as a matter of fact. Calendar sync did need some .apk switched in to get calendar working in beta2 but at least for me in beta3 I didn't have to redo anything. All my apps from tibu work and download correctly. It just seems to be very smooth.
PS. I also upgraded to the ATT SGS2 and love it but I also have my cappy as backup and love messing with all the roms for it still. Basically testing it all out. Plus I am pleasantly surprised that the cappy got ICS before the SGS2.
Sent From My KickAss ATT SGS2 SPORTING CM7

yahh I'm on the Beta 1 dev version, I feel it is smoother, there is no need for scripts anymore, everything works without doing extra flashes(besides kernel and superuser). I get much better battery life out of this one too! The one from DemonWav's thread.

Hey guys I'm sort of disheartened.. it seems cm appears to be dead for this phone. I'm not trying to be an ass. I respect developers and even (provided I can figure it out) plan to make my own rom one day. I do not want an eta either. I'm simply wondering if cm and/or miui are perhaps being worked on or if they are abandoned (it seems some say it is being worked on, but I haven't seen any official posts or anything confirming this). again I'm not trying to piss anybody off. I'm within my 30 days and it seems the nitro hd just got cwm. The screen is really enticing since I won't have an option for the skyrocket hd. I'd love some opinions about cm/miui/and the pro's and cons of switching phones. Another thing (again not looking for eta's) the last alpha build was mid December it's been quite awhile which is one of my major concerns. Thanks guys!
Definitely the best forum I've been in so far!

Cm7 is abandoned because the devs are working on cm9. Since we have broken cm7; there is no hope for miui. But cm9/MIUI will be here.

why would they waste their time building CM7 when ICS and CM9 are right around the corner. the CM devs have been furiously working on CM9, so my guess is that anyone involved with the TMO/Skyrocket CM project would stick it out until 9 is ready for mass consumption. doesnt make any sense to do anything on CM7 with CM9 so close on its heels
So there is work being done on cm? I guest I was partially correct. Interesting.. I may hold off then. Especially since the nitro forums made a point that if they don't get ics before the skyrocket hd comes out they're royally screwed. If only the galaxy nexus would have found it's way to att. That was the phone of choice for me. But yet again that's life! Thanks for your comments!

April Fool's Day was a month and a half ago.
This is no April fools joke.
I wasn't expecting an update at all anyway. HTC and T-Mo don't seem to be showing any interest in supporting the device more than in a very cursory way. They made their money off the device and are washing their hands.
The dev community has been the life of this device in my opinion since about the beginning of October for me. TBalden, Blue, and Undead are the reason I didn't bail and sell the device. I see no reason to change my decision simply because of HTC's affirmation that they don't care to support their customers.

I wouldn't go that far. Maybe great for some people, but still not quite there yet for me. But, I'm encouraged by the progress that has been made. I need a ROM that just works, everything works, without any "gotchas" or having to do anything extraordinary.. just works. That's why I stick with tweaked stock ROMs for now. My MT4GS is my only phone, I don't have a landline or another phone as a spare.
The ICS update is not really much of an issue... Get yourself a virtuous inquisition 4.0.3, I am running it right now since I got the doubleshot over eBay a month ago. Everything is working quite good and stable. Tbalden is stil working on it, he released kernel 3 a week ago, so the doubleshot is running up to 1.7ghz in case of need... don't whine, just get s-off, root and you'll get one of the most versatile qwerty smartphones out there...
Edit: you can check out Rootzwiki for more info...
Here is the download link to vinq kernel 3 v2: virtuous.prp2.com/doubleshot/inquisition/virtuous_inquisition-v4.0.2-doubleshot-kernel3_v2.zip

To be honest, CM9 currently runs a litle better than Virtuous Inquisition. Less force crashes, a slightly more polished experience, and the battery life is a little better. However, Virtuous runs Nova by default and also has the MIUI style battery bar by default.
Recommendation: try both. A few less FC's and more polish vs. a few more shiny things and a little less stability.

Believe me I'm in the same boat and cm9 is working amazingly for me as a daily driver, everything that I need works though bluetooth is slightly buggy sometimes (though that may be my fault as I jumped right in after flashing and MAY have accidentally restored my stock 2.3.4 pairings. Trust me I deliver for a living so this phone is my lifeline and the devs have and will continue to keep it a stable lifeline at worst and a superior lifeline at best! Thanks for some great work and if I can ever help... drop a line. If any of you team ds devs are ever in my hometown hit me up for a beer or some pizza!

I had some serious issues with Cm9... WiFi not working, force closing apps, did not even managed to get mybackup working to restore my data, apps etc. Camera was not running properly and the launcher itself was not that smooth, compared to nova... I'll wait for the next update or the RC to try it out again, till then I am staying with vinq.
I suppose it's more or less personal preference which rom you choose atm
Edit: I get round 1 fc in 24h and when I start the app again, it's always working. Do not have any stability issues with the new kernel...

Look, tbalden is working on both so you don't have to feel like betraying cm team or something like that... I mean I am switching from cm9 to vinq and back (right now staying on vinq because of the better experience) and trying things out. It's important for the devs that we do it to get rid of the errors...
I can recommend vinq, you can backup cm9, flash vinq, try it out (report errors) and then switch back if you don't like it... Not that I'm trying to convince you, just listing the options. Basically that is a question of 20 minutes to try a rom out, it's not like you will be formating your windows pc...
Cm9 has great support, I was running CM7 on my old Desire Z but ICS is just a totally different experience

Why did i ever trade?!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678524
well, the mytouch 4g now has a almost completely fully functioning JB ROM and the g2x has a half-assed alpha test (sorry, EB team, not trying to belittle your work). grrrr. bout to go trade for a 4g slide. what really eats me, is that the G2x is a superior phone hardware wise to most phones even now. and definitively better than the mytouch. I feel the g2x community has fallen apart and due to that, there will never be a completely functional well.....anything. we should be all working together to iron out the wrinkles in JB not fighting over who developed what first or who can or cant use what code....I'm sorry, but who gives a flying f*** about the code when nothing since froyo has actually been 100% stable and functional on our devices?
im sorry, im just a bit meeved that i traded now. the reason why is in the specs of our phone:
http://geekaphone.com/compare/T-Mobile-G2x-vs-T-Mobile-myTouch-4G
and the state of our community as G2x owners:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1784980
I'm sure i'll be flamed, shunned, and burned for this thread but i really dont care. i like my G2x despite its many downfalls. i want to see it prosper and run JB and other future versions of android.
thanks for reading.

Using the old baseband I have been 100% stable since I first got the g2x... everything works perfectly (aside from slow gps but it still works)
HFP, CM7, and CM7.2 just to name a few have no bugs other than user error which as we all know can't be fixed (because you just can't fix stupid)
I do understand where your coming from however your "facts" are a little skewed.
Good luck with the coding, I hope you will be the next great Dev!
Pin it to Win it.
Even though I don't use my G2X as my main phone anymore, it is my go to device as my tablet device. I know I don't have a tablet, but when I need to read news, stream videos, read emails, do all sorts of things, the G2X is my go to device. Hands down CM7 is solid and stable. I do need to reboot it a couple of times a week but I'm not stressed about it.
I've not updated the BB mainly because of the ROMs needing a special modification, and lose access to all the previous ROMs.
I don't care really. I want to use the ICS ROMs but they have bugs. Again all the hate goes to LG. Devs do best they can with little they do have access to.
I have the Galaxy S2, Amaze, and G2X. Hands down, my go to device is my G2X when I am home and in WiFi range. Its faster and snappier. What a waste LG did. Even display is better than the Amaze. It really pisses me off that HTC went cheap on the Amaze's display.
I use the GS2 now because it's got a stable CM9, and honestly detested the Stock ROM. If G2X had a stable CM9 (Full Support with Drivers and everything) and the GPS issue was reliable, I swear I'd go back to my G2X as my main device.
As for reliability is concerned, GS2 and Amaze hands down. Again, pisses me off LG screwed this phone royally.

thats exactly what i was saying. this is the best phone i have ever owned hardware wise. Yes, this is mostly Nvidia & LG's fault, but its still frustrating. my fiancee just got the blaze and its ok. its pretty snappy, but when my G2x is on stock rom, it stomps it... no questions asked. and yeah, the GPS bug is what i was talking abot from pre v21y. also, it is really a pain in the a$$ just to figure out how to downgrade basebands, let alone actually do it. alas, the g2x is my daily driver so i need it to preform well and be stable. that means i need bluetooth calling, working GPS, MMS, all that.
Yeah... Can't argue with you there. The G2x is a POS. I traded my MT4G for this phone too, while I don't really regret it since I got more money once I sold the G2x, the MT4G was far more reliable and every ROM just worked on it.
Either way, it was a lesson learned to never buy another LG phone no matter what the specs are. Samsung and HTC is the way to go from now on. Or better yet, Nexus!

Strongly agree! For $350, I know what I'd buy in a second if my G2x took a crap on me. Still, considering my 2 year contract came with a "free" G2x on each line nearly a year ago - I am not complaining. By the way, stock based 2.3.4 Gingerbread ROMs define stable for me (Thanks Kwes and Buru). However, I suppose I like a little instability in my life though since I married a woman?!? and use CM7 ROMs!?!:silly:
i've been seriously condsidering getting a loan and buying a nexus, than cancelling with t-mobile lol it'd probably be cheaper in the long run.

The Samsung Captivate - what a phone!

Two years ago, I got my first real taste of android from a friend who had a Motorola droid 2. I knew I wanted to get an android phone, and being on AT&T, the Captivate was the best phone out there. I tested it out inside the store and knew it was the phone for me. Having done my research, I knew about Samsung's pretty terrible update history which made me nervous, but I decided to go for it anyway.
Needless to say, of course samsung managed to take nearly a year to update the captovate, released on 2.1 eclair, to 2.2 froyo. I was very annoyed with samsung and started researching ways to get the update sooner. I read about rooting, but I decided against it because things seemed to work fine on the phone.
It took a while to get the courage, but I finally rooted my captivate after I was on froyo. I was surprised at how easy it was (thank you no locked bootloaders ). I started reading of roms and had no idea what they were, and the more I read about them the more confused I became with terms like kernels and modems. By the time gingerbread came out by samsung, I still hadn't learned enough about roms and simply updated through Kies Mini. I had to go through the rooting process again, and learned how to use Odin and flashed my first kernel (although I was clueless what it was).
Eventually I found that ics was released and developed on xda and knew I wanted to get it. I finally flashed my first rom after figuring out how to get cwm on the cappy. I was surprised to be getting ics so soon - especially after samsung officially said the cappy wouldn't get the update. Either samsung is just lazy or stupid if they thought the cappy couldn't handle ics. I learned about kernels and cwm and roms and eventually felt comfortable with it all for once.
Now, running the new JellyBean, I can say I am truly impressed with how far this this phone has made it. My iPod touch 2g was basically obsolete after a year and a half to 2 years. It lost support for apps and ios updates. But this wicked phone doesn't stop. It's running JellyBean, and thanks to the awesome devs on XDA, I'm sure it will get the next few android updates!

Unfortunately, I will be leaving AT&T in a few months, and will likely get the HTC evo V 4G on VM (prepaid). I will miss the XDA support and the awesome developers. Although it has great specs, it feels like a downgrade in some aspects

I was going to post this same thing. Thanks to the awesome devs on here, my Captivate has run last 5 Android OS. Not many phones can do that.

Yeah, I really never expected my phone to be doing so well right now. It almost doesn't need upgraded.

Same here in terms learning about android, roms, kernels, etc. Since I use the capy for work I will be using this phone for a while. Things are working so well since the Mod9 July 23rd nightly that I am afraid of going on to Jelly Bean, IT's not so much the bugs but the fact that it is working so smoothy. :good:
You said it. I love my cappy. It's definitely an awesome phone. It may not have the latest hardware, but it still proves reliable with what it has.
This is such a nice phone. The devs make sure it is always up to date so it always has the latest roms. Not to mention that it also performs great when it comes to gaming so that is a plus for gamers like me.
This is the longest time I've ever owned one phone and now that I'm running jelly bean I don't see the need to upgrade for a while
That's my main argument against IOS, what iphone will let you obtain the latest version of IOS without having to buy a brand new phone?
Cappy
I upgraded from my Nokia N95 to a captivate about two weeks ago. I got the phone via Rogers for $0.01 with a 1 year plan (Their super 6GB plan) figuring I'd use it about as much as I used my N95. I've never been so happy to be so wrong!
Since then I've installed a buncha roms just messing about. Finally decided on Skanky+Devil Kernel with a overclock to1.4Ghz (oc mostly because I'm addicted to SPB 3d Shell) and I have to say - I'm totally impressed. It performs flawlessly and I'm pleased with the battery life - though I can't seem to put it down for more than a couple minutes all day long.
I was also super happy to find all the community support and information that helped me learn my way around installing mods, rooting, etc. I did so much research (mainly because I'm a cheap bastard) and I couldn't find another phone (with in the deal Rogers had) that had so many different choices for Rom's. I love jellybean and coming off a Symbian OS (N95) you can imagine how this phone has blown my mind. Android as a whole is just so awesome and I thank god I turned a blind eye to everyone I know including family members about going on a iPhone.
I recommend this phone as I can see it has at least a year or two of life before I even have to think about getting a new phone - and even then, the decision to upgrade would be purely out of my addiction to electronics.
+1 for Samsung.
+2 for a awesome community, Rom support and continue'd development for this phone.
+1 go almost everything posted so far. I really had the new Device itch recently but I nutted up and threw miui v4 on here and Wow. Why bother. Love this thing.

I can try, what version are you on right now? Stock froyo or gingerbread? Or are you on ics?
Go to settings / about phone to find out if you aren't sure.

I have been a Symbyan user for a long time, but because of this platform died decided to switch to another. I tried iPhone cause it is just popular in Russia and Sweden (my native countries). But it really made me mad. After a three days i switched to Captivate, mostly because of it's price and hardware. After installing ICS rom and Semaphore kernel it become awesome =). The only feature i missing is FM radio.

"New User" Intro!!!! The epitome of a Lazy Flashoholic

Hello my name is James. To start I originally had the HTC Incredible which I rooted 2 different times 2 different ways because of water damage replacements :crying: I recently upgraded to a samsung S3 which I think is much more incredible than my incredible I rooted my S3 the first day before it could update and loaded up synergy! I now currently am running Illusion/ Liquid Smooth RC1. I am very pleased with this rom and would love to start posting and getting more active in xda's forum! Unfortunately don't have enough posts to post in development. Its funny too cus I had xda premium app so I could post about 6 months ago and was never able too and didnt know why so I just kinda gave up and would read through the forums instead to fix my problems. Today I tried posting in development on my computer and just realized what the deal is. Id like to submit a certain problem with RC1 that I immediately noticed but can not. Awesome... Welcome to the life of a lazy man with an extreme addiction to flashing custom roms. So to everyone at XDA Id like to say hello!
Please reply so I can get my 10 post ASAP! Id love to enjoy a cyber beer with you all on my day off.
I need a tl;dr.

Welcome to flashaholics anonymous I hope your stay is a good one. I haven't went to aosp/aokp but I heard if you do and decide to go back to touchwiz make sure you do a full wipe. Many people have talked about losing data by doing a dirty flash. Something to keep in mind. I'm on synergy and plan on staying here for now, it's my DD.
Ps: don't to forget to hit the thanks button if someone helps you!

tl;dr == I'm a lurker, but now I realize I need 10 posts to reply to dev topics
BTW, the OG Incredible was, and still is, a beast of a phone. That model is over 3 years old and is still getting Verizon OTA updates. Before I swtiched to the S3, I was running CM10 and 4.1 on a phone with 512mb RAM and 1Ghz processor. The development community for that phone was incredible [heh heh]. SynergyROM is my DD and is phenominal. Great dev support, feature packed for a TW and the Multi-Window is a big plus for me. But it's okay, we all like to flash around here. In the end, find what works for you and mikeman45 is right - make sure to thank people for their hard work and dedication. Have fun!
I'm an HTC guy myself,
HTC Eris, DInc1, Dinc2, rezound, Gnex, Dinc4, DNA(broke), and bought SGIII (which I do love) but am praying the HTC M7 comes to VZW, nothing like having an SGIII for a BACK-UP phone :good:

Yea I have been doing full wipes no matter the circumstance. I just now realized that switching between asop and tw can mess a lot of things up if using backups through titanium. For instance I restored all my setting from a tw ROM to asop and got myself in a nice little bootloop. But I highly recommend the switch especially after 4.2 realese. Beans 9 is a pretty awesome ROM as well!

Yea I still got jellybean loaded up on my old incredible. That phone killed it! I now use it as a wireless upnp music receiver. Awe man I miss multiwindow tho. I might have to make my way back to synergy one of these days. Although with the amazing 4.2 lockscreen idk how soon that may happen...
