I have the G2x right now and I keep considering the Sensation. The only thing that is stopping me is that the bootloader may be hard to crack. The devs have yet to do it for several devices and this may be the next. Will this stop you or are you still buying?

From what HTC leaks said, it will have a level of security like thunderbolt or incredible S.
If it's like thunderbolt it will be very easy to unlock, if it's like IS given the actual R&D of the devs...it ''may'' be unlocked once released if the IS method is working.
So it doesn't look like an impossible mission for our good devs
All the N1,Desire and DHD devs will work on it, very few are going towar the SGS2
Yes. It IS a deal-breaker for me. It was the only reason I didn't get the Incredible S two months ago.
So far it looks like the only way to unlock the Incredible S is with an XTC Clip and the last time I looked it was only working for some models.
Bin4ry may have made some headway on this but the last post I see from him with any new information on the matter was on the 26th of April when he said, "I said that i made progress YES, but i have not achieved anything."
TBH I've been having a terrible Android experience so far. Being on the Motorola Milestone, I still don' tknow what it's like to be on a fully free device... not to mention the 256mb RAM really CRIPPLES the entire experience of this phone.
So while the specs on these new phones are nice, I think I'd be getting a screwed up vision of Android once again if these phones never get unlocked. Somehow I had hoped Moto's bootloader would get cracked. Boy was I wrong.
The question is : why getting the risk ? there is plenty of unlocked bootloaders devices out there from LG and SE and even some better spec'd like the SGS2. LG and SE aren't very supported by devs but HTC and Samsung are the best supported one, so if a free bootloader is important for you and you don't even want to worry about dev support take an unlocked one
But for me it is not a dealbreaker as I'm getting both (SGS2 and Sensation), but for someone that will only pick one of the two you might have to think twice..

Still the kernel can't be changed. Keep in mind that a stable 2.2 rom wasn't possible until motorola released beta's of that rom. This due to the fact that the 2.2 rom didn't really want to work with the 2.1 kernel. Motorola isn't really great at writing kernels either.
I already know the next android version will probably won't work.

So it will be rootable and we can block ads, use apps requiring root, etc, just not load different ROMs?
Not overly concerned about custom Roms, but definitely want to be able to run some apps that require root.
If I am understanding this correctly my G2x is going back tonight.
I'm completely content to run a stock ROM if it's stable. I've never had occasion to root or put an alternative ROM on my Nexus One and all of my experiences with the HD2, G1, and Viewsonic G-Tablet ROMs have been mixed, Cyanogen or otherwise.
Definitely not a deal breaker.

To answer you unsarcastically, no you cannot. Verizon will not activate a phone that is not theirs. If you're looking for a stock Android experience on Verizon, check out the Xperia Play, and if you're looking for a 4-inch smartphone, check out the HTC Incredible 2.
Incredible 2 is locked down. I don't think anyone has even rooted it yet. Thunderbolt has a decent CM7 alpha, but isn't a good phone. OG incredible is a great phone but very small. Bionic should be dropping shortly, it will also most likely be locked. Oh, there's always the Samsung Charge

Yeah I played with it and actually ported a version of the GingerBlur UI theme to the Fascinate. Its an improvement no doubt. Hardware wise like I mentioned earlier moto is solid. So I've been looking at this phone for some time now and I'm currently on the LG thrill 4G and on Straight talk so here are my questions
1. Will it work on Straight talk 3g hspa like my thrill does ?
2. Worth switching ? It seems like the 2x has much better community and LG support and I'm a stickler on good community support
3. Speed ? Is it aosp or similar or is it running lg interface stock
4. Any other comments or things you'd like to tell me about the comparison of the two or anything of importance I should know

Yes the phone is good.
You can choose between aosp roms and LG roms. I use CM7.2
Okay thanks for letting me know unfortunate but I have the AT&T card is it absolutely necessary to switch?

I'd hold off until the galaxy s 3 :/.
This is a phone with amazing potential... but with no support from LG/nvidia, they crippled the hardware with lack of software.
Still good though, but unless you're getting it for cheap... I wouldn't do it.

Hey all,
I was just wondering which phones are most popular here at XDA in terms of developer contribution and such. I'm looking to buy a phone, but a little low on money, and that running a nice custom ROM will compensate for the potentially ageing hardware.

The original Atrix 4G is rather smallish, but not sure about the bootloader options. I do know that the Atrix 2 DOES have a locked bootloader, is slightly larger than the OG, and has some good development regardless of its locked down BL. I personally would NOT recommend ANY Motorola devices, they lock them down and updates are not coming quickly. The A2 devs are working on cracking the BL with a possible brute force script to hit the CDT table in order to flash a custom CDT to bypass key signature checks. But, it is uncertain what RSA encryption is being used- either 512 or 1024 bit cyphered. I got the SGS3 for the performance and dev support...

Hey guys I was recently able to sell my g2x and I have about 200$ to spend on a new phone what ares some suggestions for a new device, I was thinking of a galaxy nexus or a htc 1 s. Any ideas would be welcome thanks.
Those would be my 3 choices as well...however before choosing i would compare the specs and performance of each device as well as checkout some of the custom roms and kernels available as i would root the phone as soon as i got it. i know the galaxies have a lot of dev support

Thanks for the advice I'm leaning towards the nexus cause of Dev support and I'm not realy familer with htc unlocking rooting and roming process.

Galaxy Nexus is still good though and a hundred bucks cheaper.

I'd say go with the nexus. I rooted several HTC devices for friends and it was a pain in the butthole, you have to register on htcdev, use command prompts and etc. etc. to unlock the bootloader and then do another to get S-Off and its just a mess
what about optimus l9
Does anybody use an l9 as their daily driver if so how do you like it I am thinking about this instead of a gnexus cause its cheaper but I don't want to be stuck with another lg phone that never gets updates.
Thanks
I just bought an HTC One. It's excellent.
