[Q] Should I make the switch to Android?

Hi everyone!
As the title suggests, I'm thinking about making the switch to Android I'm currently at windows mobile, on a HD2. It's a great phone but I can't help but feel that WinMo just doesn't make such a great mobile OS.
Custom ROM's do improve the experience and all, but still, it's WinMo.. So, I thought "Okay, I'll sell my HD2 and buy myself a Desire". At this time of writing, someone is willing to pay € 250 (keep in mind that this phone is almost a year old and has some scratches on the side).
€ 250 is okay, but I'm aiming for € 300
But, now I'm getting second thoughts.. Should I wait to switch to android? Or should I keep the HD2? The Desire seems pretty solid and futureproof...
I really don't know anymore.. And since it involves quite a lot of money, I thought I could use someone else's take on this
So XDA, what do you think is best?

Wait for something better than the desire, and in the mean time, use the android rom for the hd2

Yeah, that's why I'm having second thoughts There are a lot rumored phones which should out somewhere around the holidays I guess.. But, is it worth the wait? Because the rumored dual core cpu seems kinda overkill.. And 1.2 GHz cpu's don't really seem to make much difference to me.
I mean, 1GHz is already a lot of horse power for a phone :O
Edit: In the world of gadgets and technology, something new and better is released daily, I could keep on waiting for something better?

It depends what you want from your phone. I've had the desire since probably about April, and whilst it was already an amazing phone, I rooted it yesterday because I didn't want to wait around for froyo update. Now what was a great phone is a Stellar phone!
But that's just me. As others have said, HTC are bringing some new phones out but hardware wise they're not too dissimilar to turf desire. If you want either a 4+ inch screen an 8meg camera, or a slide out keyboard, then wait for the desire HD or the Desire Z.
If these are not essential, a desire will be future proof for a least a year yet id say. But hey I'm no.expert

I was kinda thinking the same thing Although I'm hoping to get by a little longer with such a phone, so that's why I want to make the right decision this time. I mean, the HD2 feels like a mistake.. It was and still is, a quite expensive phone so yeah..
En pff, a 4" screen is nice but I don't know.. It's probably going to be the same resolution? And the design of the Desire HD looks less attractive compared to the one of the HD2 or the Desire. Well, that's just my opinion
and oh, do you have any remarks on your Desire? Something that could've been done better or..?

I'd definitely make the switch. With the help of a friend, I was recently able to put Android (2.2) on my Acer L2R Geeksphone. Since then, I've just been addicted to the phone (mind you, my Tilt2 has got super specs in almost every single aspect than the Acer L2R).
Everything that wasn't available for me with Wm is now on Android. My Tilt2 has just been laying on the floor since I got Android on this device. Now I'm looking to get a Captivate.

I've been with Windows Mobile since PocketPC 2002 on my Toshiba e740. I liked the OS because it was hackable. Swap out components, make edits, and new features.
What I didn't like is the sluggishness.
Android on my Nexus One is amazing. Here are a few thoughts that I've come across. The trackball is better then an optical pad, but don't buy anything without either one of those. You could get by without it but the trackball has really been useful in games and emulaters. I'm not sure how the optical pad would suffice. I had a Samsung Epix with an optical sensor and 1 swipe was 1 direction. So gaming is out right there. Selecting text is a pain but better then nothing.
The larger screens may seems nice, but the same resolution things will start to look blocky/pixelized. My friend has an AT&T Captivate (Galaxy S) and the screen looks good. It is a bit too big for me. The bigness of the screen make the phone very thin. Which is a good/bad thing. The Galaxy S is sweet but it lacks a trackball/sensor that is very handy.
The Desire is basically the same as a Nexus One. If I could trade my Trackball for a few physical buttons... I wouldn't. The phone is responsive and fast enough to use the onscreen controls. Being able to hit the green send button to quickly bring up the dialpad would very sweet vs having to launch the dialer from my homescreen. Honestly I don't miss a physical button though.
Life is a trade off though:
Nexus One
Trackball is the best of the best if you want to do any kind of gaming.
Trackball Notifications is a treat, presenting 255 programmable different colors for various notifications.
I think they got the FM radio working on the Nexus One.
Software updates are glorious.
You can make the Nexus one look like the Desire (which is sexy)
Desire:
Physical buttons make it easy to bring up the dialer from anywhere to make a call. I've noticed on Android the End Key doesn't really do anything beside hang up a call. I guess some programs could remap those keys for other uses.
Optical sensor is middle grade. Makes gaming basically useless unless it is all touch controls. Given the quirky multitouch issues of the screen in the Desire/Nexus one, that is also limiting.
I think the Desire is sexy
Galaxy S
I'm not too sure about it yet. I recommended my friend by one, and he did. He complains about the battery being very very short (half a day on light use).
The screen has a blue/green hue. Very noticable.
The screen is easily visible in direct sunlight. Which is awesome.
No trackball/sensor. Ouch.
Hummingbird processor/GPU
Screen has a great multitouch screen. So multitouch gaming is easily possible.
Phone is so THIN that you could probably afford a thicker longer battery to make it last throughout the day.
My opinion... wait. If you want one now the Nexus will start to get Gingerbread probably starting in October (almost a month). Maybe try to find one second hand or cheap. Stay out of contract because some better phones with better processors will start coming out very soon.

The wait for a new phone like desire hd or desire z is not to long and will be a big difference. But no one would blame you if you jumped the gun, especially if you like the design better and feel 1 ghz is enough.

Yeah, the Nexus One has crossed my mind already.. but it's a bit more expensive than the Desire and it's kinda hard to order one and get it shipped right here to Belgium.
I don't know why, but Google doesn't ship to Belgium. It did to the Netherlands but, Google has stopped shipping Nexus' and right now, I don't find a webshop which has cheap shipping or even the Nexus One.
And concerning the Desire HD/Z, I don't think there'll be much difference, the Z will have a physical keyboard and the HD will have a huge screen, just like de HD2 does. But, I noticed that with the HD2, holding the phone can be problematic sometimes. Operating the device with one hand can be kinda tricky, you could easily drop the phone that way..And oh, the Desire HD is not likely to have a trackbaal/sensor And just like player911 says, it's something which is very handy! Most of the time when I have a Android device in my hand, I use the trackball/sensor to switch screens etc.

One of the only things I would have improved on the desire would have been speed of the OS as it ran slightly slow at times. However now that I've upgraded to froyo I'm struggling to think of anything. The minor gripes I had before are mostly ironed out in froyo.
The biggest negative for The desire is the battery life, but this can be remedied in a # of different ways. I have a spare battery for instance. Also, froyo supposedly improves battery but I haven't run any tests personally.

Hmm, I've read about the battery life.. Is it really that bad? I mean, do you have troubles to get through the day with one charge?

Good point. But the Android ports for the HD2 are nothing close to the real deal, it seems. No? And personally, I don't like WP7 at all.. Way to apple-ish for me. I want a phone which lets me do whatever I want to do with it. That's something which is not going to be possible with WP7 - unless it gets hacked, and it probably will, but still, I don't like it

Battery on desire will get you through about a day on a single charge (pre froyo) but its not drastically worse than other smart phones I don't think. I always charge my phone everyday anyway.

I wouldn´t think on make the switch
My Leo is capable of having the best of both OS and still has same or even better specs than "newer" devices.
And now that WP7 is just around the corner, I´ll stay with WM/WP!

After owning an HD2 you won't to go back to anything with a smaller screen, i did and hated it, so bought a streak! So much better than the HTC in every department

Personally, I think 4" is the biggest screen size I find comfy. Anything bigger is a bit of a risk in the hand.
Ive had the Nexus one and the desire. ALthough near identical, I much appreciate the hard buttons as opposed t o the softkeys on the Nexus.
The Nexus Trackball acts funny after a few months of use (or did in my case) and the optical joystick on the desire randomly breaks with most CM based Roms. so
Btw HTC Sense has a pretty good text selection feature making it easy to deal w/o any sort of joystick/trackball.
I'd wait and get the next range of HTC phones or a samsung galaxy phone. Both will have huge android dev (galaxy coz they simply sold so many!) and HTC because the community has been built around HTC Devices.
The two biggest things on my Desire wish list include:
- better GPU not that I really play games , but hey! I would if I could!
- Multi touch issue (you wont notice it in the browser) but a lot of games are soooo frustrating because of the multi-touch bug
THe Nexus one had the following issues:
Power button has a mind of its own
hard to press soft keys
Bought a Galaxy S to review so will let you know what thats like. Im sure it'll have its quirks.

Android user questions about WP7

Hello,
Currently I'm Android user. I had Desire and now I have Desire Z. I'm looking for Win device, because the UI is much better in my opinion and the OS is really good.
I hate Android market, because there are so many **** apps, you have to download other programs to filter the **** and etc. I hate it.
Second I hate are those widgets, tiles are much better for me.
So my questions:
Will MS update all their phones at the same time? Or will it be like Android, some of the devices will be updated, some will be left without update. I hate this on Android, because you have to buy many devices if you want to have the latest OS. I think this thing adds very much to the sales...
Other question: As I live in Lithuania (europe) will the market and other features work? Operators are selling some devices with WP7, but I want Samsung Omnia 7, because I think it's the best in battery/looks. Maybe you would recommend other phone?

Well apparently MS will update all devices at once or at least this is what I know.
As for the Market, unfortunately it is not supported fully in many countries.
So for now you can download any freeapp, to buy you have to wait OR register credit card with US or UK address.

Oh, if they will be updated all together, that's wonderful! That is the most annoying thing in Android- fragmentation and a lot of **** devices. It can't be a good platform with many, many phones. Many apps don't work on many devices and phones are not updated and etc. :]

It sounds to me that the only requirements you have is a minimum screen size. Then you should go with the HD7 because it has 4,3 over the 3,8 on the Trophy. I also heard that there is a lot of problems with the Trophy. I ended up buying the Omnia 7, becasue of the AMOLED and the nice design(and because it what on sale) But then again HTC do have MicroSD slot inside which means that you can upgrade the space, where Omnia 7 only comes with 8gb NAND. That does makes the Omnia significant faster when loading applications but also mean you are suck with limited storage.

I had HD7 in hand and it wasn't so comfortable... The lock key is hard to reach and it's kinda big for me. Well, if it had a good battery life, I would consider it... But I heard that it has horrible battery... My main factors for phone is: Battery Life and Screen, well memory is important too... Omnia 7 would be perfect if it had 16Gb. I wrote to some sellers, because in Germany they have 16Gb versions, maybe in Lithuania they will have some too ))

Maybe, i don't think that 8gb is to little, special if you get ZunePass so you only stream your music instead of have them on your device. Special if you like me have a flat rate data plan. Well you could go for the German version (thought of that to, but could't find it anywhere) I'm getting my Omnia 7 tomorrow(i hope) and i'm pretty sure i wont regret
Oh P.S. In the future everything will be stored in the cloud, so why would you need physical memory (lol)

I have LG Optimus 7. Good device, good looking. Well built.
I would not get HTCHD7 because HTC used ****ty screen for this one.
And also HTC has usually bad cameras.
I wanted to buy SonyEricsson but they didn't make it.
I would take DellVenuePro or Samsung with the best camera.

Heh it's my first LG phone and I never thought I would buy it!
But it's well built and actually looks great in life.
Something I can't say about Samsung.
It also has 16GB and good batteery life.

i have a HTC 7 Trophy. It's what i would call the minimum spec'ed windows phone. and to be honest, it's fine. i'm not crazy about space, screensize, camera. battery life is just as good as any of the other phones. the issues reported seem to have died a bit. i think my screen still gets a bit dirty a bit too quickly, but i bought a screen protector to stop that issue. i was and am still interested in omnia 7 but now that i have the trophy, i can settle knowing that i pretty much have similar capabilities. my girlfriend will probably end up getting the omnia within a few months so i will be able to fiddle with both devices anyways.

The HD2 has AB 1150 mAh battery so yes its bad. It also has one of the worst possible display panels Htc. Could have chosen.
Get a venure pro instead of an Hd7. Much better phone in almost every way possible.

actually, the hd7 has a 1230 mah battery, still not great, but oh well.
What is your obsession with the dvp??? It doesn't have better specs, has the lowest memory of all the wp7 launch devices (can we even call it a launch device when no one could get it at launch), and it's only upside is the slide out portrait keyboard.
You know, I was very interested in the dvp, until it started having all these problems. Then to put half the ram that all the other phones are coming with...
I just don't trust dell enough to spend the money.

Get an Omnia 7. I had an HD2 and was looking at the HD7 but HTC really messed up with just copying old parts.
Omnia 7 is light, feels nice in hand, screen looks great and good battery.

Which phone will become the HD2 successor? (dev love)

Hello everyone, this is yet another "which phone should I get" thread, so if you are sick of them please move on but I would be grateful for every input.
So up to now I have been using N900 which to me is a very good device, with a lot of room to improve of course, but lack off Nokia's support has just pissed me off. I'm a heavy google user (gmail, calendar & stuff) so android seems like a natural progression. Now, since I have N900 I'm obviously into modding and stuff I'm looking for a very similar android device. Atm that would be HTC HD2, the thing is I consider this phone just too old, I'm looking for a fairly new device, possibly not even out yet, which is sure to get a lot of love from xda and other devs. So yeah, I'm not even sure if it's possible to foretold which device will become the new HD2 in the android world, perhaps it has something to do with open hardware drivers, hope you guys have a better clue. I plan to stick with this phone for another 1,5 year and I just can't afford 2 smart phones at the same time, so I'm basically looking for the best long term investment.
Please, note that I'm from Europe, where not all devices are available or will be delayed. I can probably wait with the purchase until May. I don't have any preferences towards particular brand.

my guess is ull have to wait for the fist 4+" dual core htc device for all the htc folks to jump ship

We should wait a cycle of 2-3 yr until that super device replacement arrives, that´s the usual but anything can happen!

With the speed of phones developing these days, won't be 2-3 years. More like half a year to one year.

I don't think you could really answer this question. No one will know until the phone has been released.

As of right now, there's no worthy HD2 successor yet. HTC ups their high-end phone every year (diamond 2008, blackstone 2009, HD2 2010, etc) so cross your fingers for that mythical 1.5ghz dual-core snapdragon hopefully by the end of this year...

In my opinion, The HD2 is still one of the biggest power houses on the market. A 1 ghz processor. Yea there making awesome phones, but very few of them are being made with the components that are within the HD2. Correct me if I'm wrong. Its a stacked phone and you pair it with an Android ROM, and its right up there with anything else.

Oh well, guess it wasn't that hard to convince me. I'm getting HD2 and will slowly watch how the things unfold. Thanks everyone!

How about a poll?
I agree that the HD2 is getting too old to buy as a new phone. I think the step change we've all been looking forward to is coming in the forms of the dual core processor phones due this year. I think it will be a choice along the lines of:
1. Motorola Atrix
2. LG Optimus 2x
3. Other Android device
4. Other WP7 device
I have been a die hard HTC fan since 2002 so I wish I could vote for Option 3 but I just can't wait so I pick Option 1.

The point is you can't just look at any mobile you'd like, compare it specs to HD2 and say, all right we have a rightful successor, there are many other factors to consider. Again, I'm not a developer myself so I don't know much about the whole process but for example N900 still doesn't have a full android experience ported and that is due to closed nature of it's hardware drivers rather than hardware limitations. Also, as far as I know this forum was/is mostly about HTC handsets so I believe a HTC product will be heavly favoured.

I just got a hd2, no box in brand new condition for 140 so I hope the development love is sustained. I will try and help with graphics.

You really will like the HD2. I got mine for 49 bucks when my contract was up for my blackberry a couple months back. Ive loved it. So many different options to choose from and the custom ROM's just add to the mix. I just put the new NAND Android ROM on mine and it runs flawlessly. Not 1 issue soo far and it is freaking fast. No offense to Windows, but Android software is second to none. Like I said earlier, match these two things together, and you will have a powerhouse thats just as good, possibly even way better than the Droid 2 and Evo 4G. I'd recommend getting this phone...But I do recommend that you upgrade to Android. Any questions, just leave me a message.

There's no way of knowing, because manufacturers rightfully don't release information on the hardware that would be important in identifying an "HD2 successor". What made the HD2 so amazing was the completely unlocked bootloader/NAND. Plus the hardware on it was ahead of its time. People talk about the phone as if it was a 2010 phone, not even realizing it came out in November 2009!
HTC Vision may be the 2011 version but no one knows for sure.

For instance Motorola had mm L7 few years back it was modded till i finally bricked it same is the case with HD2. i mean with so many developers working on this phone i think there is more to come. As far as succesor is concerned well im no programmer but each os is processor dependant. As long as they keep recipe the same we can be looking into a new Super moddable phone
P.S i dont think dual core or that crap would change much, as long as we have so many choices on HD2 im still drooling over it

I wanted an iphone 4 lately, some guy wanted to talk me into trading it,
then I tried and I hate that the iphone only has one button, it's not as responsive. next to that all icons are in homescreen, you can only make maps, in android you can switch between launcher or homescreen, and so on..
No newer phone at the market really makes me say 'wow' atm, but I can't deny I look every day, for u successor.

HD2 is power monster , it can do anything . no other phone can handle that much load

shattered screen
Someone accidentally made my HD2 drop and shattered the screen with a sofa smashing her against the wall. I was quoted $150 US by ubreakifix to replace the screen. I can't wait to get if fixed even though the HTC One S is $200 plus $20/month for 20 months. Yes the One S sports modern specs but it is not as gorgeous as the HD2.
I borrowed my daughter's HD2 and gave her the iPhone 3GS. She was not happy. Even though she is not using a data plan.
I want a Windows Phone which hackers can tweak to run Android. But nothing less than the HTC HD2.
Windows Phone 8 is a long way.

Upgrade Advice - NO iPhone!

Hello guys, as of 24th of this month and until 24th feb im eligible for my upgrade on my contract. Im currently using a HD2, and im looking for advice on an upgrade. i have the highest contract so there is no phone as of yet i cant upgrade to. if i cant get it on my network ill just cancel and grab it somewhere else. a few points to point.
NO IPHONE i hate the thing its terrible.
NO ANDROID. not because i hate it but because im a windows fan boy. although i dual boot linux and run media centre via linux.
I loved the look and the feel of the hd7, BUT its dated and i want something that is keeping up with the times.
Basically windows phone 7, and Big screen, Gaming must be smooth like the hd7.large hdd. no idea if any phones do Hd movie playback well. i can run 720p via coreplayer on this hd2 so im guessing newer models can. i know its a large list, and pretty much a tight one ive seen the titan, but not sure if it beats the hd7. and tbh i want something to beat iphone.
whats due for release on t mobile uk up until 24th feb? what you brainiacs here think.

If you want WP then I'd recommend the Nokia Lumia. I don't currently have a Nokia phone but I had them for years and really rate them. If I didn't want Android, that's what I'd have.

That nokia with apple old Nano style is very eye appealing.
I been using windows 7 on my HD2 and I'm really falling for it. A few reason so far is the smoothness and ease of access. The zune software works very well with my computer. Android google music is cool but limitation to music and excludes video, picture, and podcast. iTunes I just hate with passion!

If you are going WP& I would recommend either the Titan or the Lumia they are two different devices just see which fits you the best

Samsung appearance/construction may not be that great but Super AMOLED+ is easily the best in terms of WP7 displays (and given how all WP7 phones have pretty similar specs, display is probably the most important thing which makes it stand out).

Super Amoled (+ / HD) is my preferred screen but the Lumia has an AMOLED screen and seems like a much better device. The Focus S was my third choice

The lumia devices have a clear black display that completely enhances AMOLED to a whole new level. I own a lumia 800 and it's mindblowing. If Nokia releases the rumored 900 before lumia 900 by then, take it and run.

get a blackberry then, it's solid, it always works, and it also have Apps
good on battery life, and great resale value

I love my original Focus, mainly because of the size and the front ascetics.

10 minute boot time, application catalogue that you can scroll through in a matter of half an hour, no good games or decent apps, and halfway out the door as a company. Yeah, totally legitimate option.

Interesting. How is it in sunlight? (I know that isn't very important for most people, just wondering)

It takes a second longer to adjust than my focus s but once adjusted it's equally clear.

Is the 1020 still worth getting?

My 4s is crapping out slowly, and i found a brand new lumia 1020 for $250 on kijiji, brand new, in yellow! kinda tempted to get it cuz of the nice camera and windows 10 around the corner, as well as denim just released, but it is 2015, and the 1020 wasn't a powerhouse to begin with. what do you guys think? save the $250 and wait, or will the phone still be viable for some time? as you can tell, i'm on a budget. would have gone for the oneplus one, but with the canadian dollar + shipping it will likely be $500+ delivered.

Just for camera?
The question is "Are you going for this phone just for camera?". If you answer is "yes" then, go ahead. This is the simply the best camera out there. At this budget, superb.
But, if you considering moving from Android to Windows Phone, that is a big adventure. Mainly because of the App store and other features of the WP, which Android user may not like.
I advise you to check the Windows Phone OS first (may be borrow phone from a friend) before actually buying.
Note: I am using this phone just for its camera.

I have been using the Nokia Lumia 1020 for about 6 months. It has been doing very well for me, and I bought it for two reasons. One, I missed Windows OS. I used to use a HTC Wizard, then a Tytn and finally the Kaiser. They were fantastic, and the Kaiser I used straight for a good 5 years. In fact, that phone I still have and it works just fine, however the battery is showing its age and the front bezel has cracked and fallen off in places.
The second reason is that my Samsung Galaxy SII LTE was an absolute piece of garbage. I used it for almost 2 1/ years and it was problematic pretty much from the get-go. I had battery issues (replaced the battery)... then there were the constant freezes, crashes, app drops and more. It was absolutely terrible! I had more issues with Android than any other phone I have used..
I've used a lot of phones, but my Windows OS phones have been the best ones I have ever used! I got hooked with the old Motorola VX220... and moved on from there..
Glad to be back to Windows OS and I don't see myself ever going back.
The 1020 I bought both for the camera (I love it) and for the phone itself. It has proven to be more than reliable, it has proven to be an absolute wonderful phone!
Granted it sucks not having expandable storage space, but hey, that 4s you have isn't either!
I'd say grab one, they are excellent phones and will treat you well...! Just make sure you get a case for it as the phone can feel a bit slippery without one..
