Is the 1020 still worth getting? - Nokia Lumia 1020

My 4s is crapping out slowly, and i found a brand new lumia 1020 for $250 on kijiji, brand new, in yellow! kinda tempted to get it cuz of the nice camera and windows 10 around the corner, as well as denim just released, but it is 2015, and the 1020 wasn't a powerhouse to begin with. what do you guys think? save the $250 and wait, or will the phone still be viable for some time? as you can tell, i'm on a budget. would have gone for the oneplus one, but with the canadian dollar + shipping it will likely be $500+ delivered.
anyway, thanks for the advice.

Just for camera?
The question is "Are you going for this phone just for camera?". If you answer is "yes" then, go ahead. This is the simply the best camera out there. At this budget, superb.
But, if you considering moving from Android to Windows Phone, that is a big adventure. Mainly because of the App store and other features of the WP, which Android user may not like.
I advise you to check the Windows Phone OS first (may be borrow phone from a friend) before actually buying.
Note: I am using this phone just for its camera.

I have been using the Nokia Lumia 1020 for about 6 months. It has been doing very well for me, and I bought it for two reasons. One, I missed Windows OS. I used to use a HTC Wizard, then a Tytn and finally the Kaiser. They were fantastic, and the Kaiser I used straight for a good 5 years. In fact, that phone I still have and it works just fine, however the battery is showing its age and the front bezel has cracked and fallen off in places.
The second reason is that my Samsung Galaxy SII LTE was an absolute piece of garbage. I used it for almost 2 1/ years and it was problematic pretty much from the get-go. I had battery issues (replaced the battery)... then there were the constant freezes, crashes, app drops and more. It was absolutely terrible! I had more issues with Android than any other phone I have used..
I've used a lot of phones, but my Windows OS phones have been the best ones I have ever used! I got hooked with the old Motorola VX220... and moved on from there..
Glad to be back to Windows OS and I don't see myself ever going back.
The 1020 I bought both for the camera (I love it) and for the phone itself. It has proven to be more than reliable, it has proven to be an absolute wonderful phone!
Granted it sucks not having expandable storage space, but hey, that 4s you have isn't either!
I'd say grab one, they are excellent phones and will treat you well...! Just make sure you get a case for it as the phone can feel a bit slippery without one..

Debating leaving Android for iPhone...

I was happy with my G1 back in October of 2008. It was great. Then, due to iPhone leapfrogging and hardware limitations of the G1, I needed a "better phone." Well, I got the first one that looked good on paper...The dreaded Samsung Vibrant.... the thing I HATED about it was the copycat look stolen from the iPhone, but, I put up with it. Then, right off the bat, I noticed that the gps didn't work. At all. I was lucky if it had me within a block of where I actually was. So, I thought it was Samsung. So I rooted and tried different ROMs. Still not happy with this glitchy, slow-ass phone.
Am I REALLY buying the marketing hype that the iPhone "just works???" I really like the Android system but am SO unhappy about the problems with the hardware etc. My wife and son ech have the HTC Sensation. Great phone but the battery? Please! Lasts 4 hours with decent use.
Here are my two problems with Apple:
1. Overpriced, and EVERYONE KNOWS IT. I have a problem with paying for a device that I KNOW has a HUGE markup in it. good for Apple, bad for consumer.
2. My wife, through her work has been given 2 Macbooks over the years. A white macbook about 12 years ago, and a macbook air a month ago. The original macbookHAD MORE PROBLEMS THAN ANY WINTEL SYSTEM I HAVE EVER HAD. So, we swore off Apple. Then comes the marketing hype. We actually bought into and believed (like the IT dept at her work this year) that the macbook Air was made by God hiimself. Like all apple products. The first week, it freezes up while she is making a powerpoint presentation. Totally frozen. Has to Hard restart. A week later, freezes up in WORD. Same thing, no soft reboot. Had to turn it off physically.
Anyway, I rant. So, on to my question -
SHOULD I STICK IT OUT AND WAIT FOR THE NEXUS PRIME OR GO IPHONE 5?
The Nexus Prime is going to be made by Samsung....
I am attaching a post I made earlier today on the tmobile forums regarding samsung just fyi.
"First there was the Behold fiasco. Then all the Samsung apologists said, oh, samsung has learned their lesson. REALLY.... I don't know who to blame and who to, therefore, quit... I THINK its Samsung. The phone (without rooting and installing modded ROMs) is a piece of iPhone knock-off crap. (I hate Touchpiss because, yes Apple you are right, it freaking looks like iOS). I bought the damn phone in July of 2010. We were promised a 2.2 update shortly. It was like 6 months later to finally get that pos.
Then we are told IN MARCH via samsung twitter etc. that 2.3 would be coming soon. (Yes, the Vibrant was mentioned specifically). Its been ANOTHER 6 months and NOTHING.
I AM DONE WITH SAMSUNG.
Please tell me if I'm wrong.
Tell me if Samsung has had the 2.3 update waiting for 6 months and it's "T-mobiles fault."
Tell me they have learned their lesson.

Thanks for listening...
simple
just think what you can not do with AndroidOS that you can do with iOS and vice versa
if you find more + points on the iOS side, then by all means get an iphone / ipad

It's even simpler. Be careful which Android phone you buy. The iPhone is excellent, but it isn't as perfect as it should be. And there are Android phones that are better than the iPhone. But you have to discover which ones. Usually buying your phones from a store with a good refund policy will help in discovering the good Androids from the bad.
For battery life, you cannot find anything better than the iPhone 4. For the iPhone 5, I don't know about the battery life. But it is assumed to be just as good. But iOS isn't as user friendly as Android. And you can...I know from experience...find Android phones just as pleasing and satisfying as any iPhone can be. And even more so.
I'd highly suggest the Nexus S or the next version of the Nexus. Or look at something from HTC, like the Sensation, if you're on T-Mobile, or the HTC Inspire if you're on AT&T.
My Samsung Infuse...a Galaxy S descendant...is quite outstanding. The GPS issues Sammy had with the Galaxy S phones is no more on their later phones.
If you want a work of art hardware wise and reliable and secure operation, get an iPhone. Just don't be surprised that you need to navigate through many menus to perform a simple function which, in Android, comes with the tap of a single button. And don't expect to do anything with an iPhone outside of using it's collected apps. There's no customization to speak of.
I personally have the Sensation and once it's rooted with a different rom battery life is much better and performance is X10 compared to stock. If you want a great performing phone with excellent battery life though look for an HTC phone with a second generation single core snapdragon processor. The Inspire 4G, G2 and the MyTouch 4G all fall into this category for AT&T/T-Mobile. Honestly the Inspire is one of the better built phones out there and this is coming from a tech that repairs phones all the time. Also not that the Inspire doesn't perform well out of the box, but running aosp android (cyanogenmod) from a phone with that kind of hardware makes for an awesome android experience. Only issue with this phone is no front facing camera which might not even be a big deal to you, I don't know.
Thanks for the input!
Quick side-note. Although official 2.3 has not dropped, the speed of CM7 on the vibrant took it to a whole different level. Amazing. But no source = issues like no GPS at all and poor battery life. Thus my HUGE disappointment with Samsung never giving us gingerbread.

A phone worth waiting for in WP7

I had the HTC mozart the first day it had released and absolutely fell in love with the OS.
I am approaching the end of my contract and was planning on another WP7.
I initially had plans to get the lumia but the lack of FFC and non removable battery is kind of holding me back (I had to take out the battery of the mozart quite a lot of time when it gets hanged and would prefer a new phone where I can take out the battery)
Which phone do you guys thing would be the best bet for WP7 (Anything in market or any phone which is going to be released soon)
Cheers
Shamreez
PS: Played with my friends Galaxy s 2 and that is a pretty tempting phone too
I recently picked up an HD7 for free on a 3 year plan and really like the phone. The 4.3" screen is nice and it doesn't lag at all. WP7 doesn't need huge specs to run well so I wouldn't let that concern you.
HD7 is nice...BUT!

However the HTC HD7 battery life really sucks. I'm not sure if it is just my device but I have already turned off ALL synchronizations. On the settings -> battery saver. A full charge only shows me that I have 15hours. The battery drains are really bad.

We have two HD7's (wife) and have been very happy with the battery life. I have had them for a couple of months and have never run out of battery life in a single day. I always recharge at night anyway. Being a software dev I tend to push the phone pretty hard as well. However, I do turn off bluetooth when not in the car.
Overall I am very pleased, as I initially thought the 4.3" screen would suck the juice, but so far that hasn't been the case.
Titan. Not sure if you can get one where you are, but it's outstanding. I had a Focus, which I liked a great deal, but picked up the Titan to try out. Was intending to return it, as I expected it to be just too big, but I love it.
It's funny, when I go back to look at my Focus, I think of how small it is .
of the devices right available now, the titan (giant screen, fairly thin, great build materials) or the focus s (excellent screen, super thin, super light) are the best choices if you want a large screen (and if you can get them where you live and work on your networks)
the only device that is upcoming that interests me right now is the nokia ace (lumia 900)
Ditto on on the Titan.
I picked up both a Radar and a Titan. I actually loved the Radar, and it would be a great choice for someone who needed more of a mid-range phone and is happy with a more compact size.
But the Titan is simply awesome. Windows Phone really comes to life on that huge screen. The Titan is the one I kept.
Lumia 900 I'm predicting LTE modem since its said to come with windows phone tango.
You'll have to wait a few months though...
Sent from my Windows Phone Mango Focus using Board Express
So I guess the best thing would be to go for the titan now or wait for the Nokai Ace.
(I am prepared to wait if it is 2 - 3 months) but I guess it would be more (Or would Nokia try to disturb Apple iphone 5 party by releasing it on March)
I have the hd7 now and love it... I definatly am not getting a white phone(titan).
I have yet to see an omg I need that phone. Like I did with the hd2 and hd7.
Im in the same boat as you though. I would sell the hd7 and get another phone while the hd7 is still holding its value but there is nothing standing out from the rest.. 2nd gen devices dont have HSPL yet, there specs arent far greater than 1st gen anyway..
Nokia does seem like they will be putting out some really nice phones though. But come on its Nokia, Id love to see HTC put out something to compete with Nokia's phones I have a feeling they will be coming out with. Ive own HTC phones since my ppc-6700(remember that block) and I think their quality is really good.

I think those choices would be the best ones you can make. I'd go for the Titan. It has a good battery life, great build quality, it's thinner than the HD7 and the screen's massive.
The things one can hear concerning the Nokia Ace are cool too. But I also think that you'll have to wait more than 2 or 3 months until it's released. iPhone 5 releases are just speculation - normally Apple releases it in july (after the WWDC) but for example the iPhone 4S was released later. If I was you, I'd take the Titan and be happy
For Wp i would choose phone from Htc, i have 7 trophy, and i am very happy.

Nokia N8 for $199 at Amazon, should I bite?

I'm currently rocking a Galaxy S III. Its nice and all, but I never really use the smartphoen for what its intended for. It also cost like $500. I'm thinking of selling it and downgrading to a Nokia N8. It's on Amazon for $200 right now unlocked. It has all the features I really need. Decent camera. Makes phone calls. And most importantly, its an all metal phone that is supposedly built like a tank. I find modern smartphones so icky to hold. Even the One X and Lumia 920 aren't tanky enough for me. I'm quite OCD about the tankiness. The thing also has an FM transmitter, which I will actually use! Yeah don't care about apps and web browsers, none of that smartphone stuff. What I am concerned about is stability and reliability of the software. I'm reading alot about restarts and freezes and corrupt memory on Amazon and Slickdeals. I really want it to last, because it will be my new backup phone, for say the next 5 years, while I play around with the new stuff, get bored, and sell them. I'm currently rocking an old Samsung slider as my backup
Do you think $200 is a good price for the N8 and will it last me a good 5 years as a backup phone?
It's great. I got it 3 days after release and still use it regularly. My 920 is my daily driver but my n8 is my work phone.

Yes, even if I don't like Nokias, but the price is very good and it's a good device

Finally made the full transition to Windows Phone 8

Okay, well first I'll start with a bit about my phone history. I started out on the HTC Wallaby in 2003ish which I spent four paychecks working part time at Long John Silvers to get. After that, I moved on through a Windows Mobile lineup.
Samsung Blackjack, T-Mobile Dash, Samsung Blackjack II, HTC Touch, HTC PPC6800 and then back to Blackjack 2 (HTC's batch back then broke if you looked at them wrong.)
After this, Android came to fruition. I joined the nation's nobody character at the time and their little beta test that was Android. I had the G1 and picked up an Omnia II for good measure just in case Android turned out to be a huge flop. The G1 was a phenomenal device though, I remember when the first emulators for it came out, I didn't even know what to do with all the possibilities. Soon after, I moved through Android devices as follows;
G1
Mytouch 3g
Samsung Behold 2
Motorola Cliq
Garminfone
Mytouch 4g
Mytouch Slide
Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S1)
Motorola Backflip (While the vibrant was being repaired)
Dell Streak 5
Samsung Captivate
back to the Dell Streak 5
It was then that I picked up the HTC HD2, beauty that it is. I still have that phone, running Windows Phone 7 and 2.1 (Yes, I know it's behind but I haven't played with it in awhile.) This was my biggest step into modding, until then I'd only flashed roms but this phone made me want to develop stuff. I cooked a few Android and Winmo roms, messed with a few kernels, etc. This phone will forever hold a place in my heart.
So, as good as that phone was, WP7 can't be that bad, right? Eh... Well, I wasn't as disappointed as most. Even in it's initial release it was more fluid than any other system available and it had Netflix and high quality games like IloMilo that I simply could not get on Android. However, going from the pure black to the hideous LCD panels that HTC used at the time making everything grey was damn near depressing. I traded this for a pair of dell streaks that someone had messed up the software on, I fixed the software and had two nice phones for one. I couldn't be happier, right? Wrong.
I went back to Android and that's when the lag first became apparent to me and I have not since been able to not recognize it in even the current flagship (Though the Nexus 4 does pretty damn well.)
I couldn't put up with it so I fell right back to Windows Phone, picking up an HTC Surround for one of my Streaks... Ugh, that device was awful but the OS was just so, refreshing. I quickly put the money down to get a Dell Venue Pro.
I used the Dell Venue Pro longer than any other device I've ever used. I used it almost one full year. after this, I was sent a Nokia Lumia 800 as a developer device and realized what perfection in a phone was. It did bug me that it didn't have a FFC but that little bother didn't damper the experience of that phenomenal device one bit. The fact that it never officially came to the US was disheartening.
However, when I realized they were EOLing Windows Phone 7 to make way for a sexy new kernel, I had to pawn it off on someone so I could maximize my return. I traded for an iPhone 4s. This was my bittersweet introduction to Apple. I loved the apps but there was literally nothing else on that awful OS to love. The layout was uninteresting, it had the worst keyboard I'd seen since Android Donut, it was generally ugly, the only likable thing was the games. That phone itself is miserable. I quickly traded it for a GS3 with a beat up backplate.
I will tell you now and I know most will disagree, the GS3 is awful. I mean, Touchwiz feels like it should be on android 2.1, not a modern version and the improvements that Sammy put in aside from the GPU acceleration were largely useless. I can't express my disappointment enough. I traded it for a pair of Galaxy S2 which I turned around and swapped for a One X + I used the One X plus and in terms of build quality it was great, HTC had finally started moving up on the overall user experience. They didn't have all the gimmicky features that Samsung uses but damn did they know how to make something that worked. Were that thing rootable at the time, I may have kept it around. Sadly, it wasn't and when I decided to get rid of it, I was fortunate enough to find someone dumb enough to trade a Nexus 4 for it (I'm persuasive and showed him price tags.)
The Nexus 4 is hands down THE premium android device, I also got a LGOG at this time that I guy brought by to have rooted and never came back for (still sitting in my drawer though I do play with it still) I love that Nexus 4 though, great device but the fact that Google's own phone can't run 1/3 of the games I want to play was outright disappointing. I traded it and $130 for an HTC One. Good device, great user interface but I don't know if mine is an exception, there's a painfully large gap between the aluminum and plastic that just bugs me. That and lag is still present (Though not as bad as it is on the awful GS4) I keep it around though, definitely good for games...
After this, I shelled out the money and bought a Lumia 920 outright. I have to say, this is the first phone since the Dell Venue Pro I've been satisfied with. Best camera, best build quality, say what you will about the software but it's reliable, lets me communicate via any means necessary with no hiccups and remains smooth no matter what I'm doing on it.
Some complain that the Lumia 920 can't be customized. I bed to differ, my phone was black three weeks ago, red two weeks ago, yellow yesterday and last night I put the finishing touches on painting the Tardis on the back of a black Lumia 920 shell. There is little better customization and it doesn't require some ugly case. It's the first phone I've had that had games that I seemed to enjoy all of, few junk games and the wireless charger in my car, at my job, built into my nightstand... It's just too convenient. I'm a power user and I love my Nokia Lumia 920 and it's Windows Phone 8 OS.

Extremely Disappointed

I received my brand new Nokia Lumia 1020 in Yellow this morning. I quickly proceeded to tear open the packaging and snap some shots to find out what all the fuss was about this camera.
Extreme disappointment ensued, shots were grainy, barely in focus and blurry in some instances. The camera struggled to focus on simple objects and the super zoom just made everything very very grainy. I had heard the camera app was a little slow but this was horrid. To me this was unacceptable, my old, smashed HTC Mozart takes better pictures, heck, even my partners N7000 takes better shots. I made sure I was using the ProCam app and fiddled with the settings to no avail. At this point I was getting frustrated, I spent I a nice chunck of cash for this phone and it seemed like Slannmage's epic monologue may actually have a minute morsel of truth in it.
It was around this point that I flipped the phone over to look at the lens to check for dirt when I realized I hadn't removed the scratch protector from the camera... So this is really just a reminder to all new owners of the Lumia 1020, take the plastic protectors off your phone before using it and/or potentially returning it.
Once removed, the photo's were amazing! This camera is really a world apart and on Auto it is easily as good as my Canon 450D on Auto. Props to Nokia for an amazing device!
Haha, I hope that people will read whole post before argueing
damn, my lumia1020 did not have the plastic film

i was about to press Back when I saw this after reading the first sentence
have the same problem with you, but i didnot remove the protection because scare of scratch. Now i have a case, Happy with L1020 now.
I made the same silly mistake. Charged my new bought lumia and tested the camera. Funny thing was, I was not disappointed in spite of the protector still on. HAHAHAHA. Better than my previous phone (that cost more to buy)
Hey dude,
glad you didn't fall out with the Nokia in the end. I wanted to get your opinion on how you're finding it (if you still have it)?
I had a Lumia 850 which was great especially when using as a camera where the Nokia software came to life (and in my opinion the Nokia hardware and software was the missing link in Windows Phones).
So I was pretty sure I wanted a Lumia 1020 but due to some bizzare coincidences and screw up by the phone company I am getting sent both a Nokia Lumia 1020 and a Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
You can see my dilema, which one do I got for?! What's your opinion on the Lumia 1020, is it responsive (apps and hardware) and could you see yourself with that phone in 6 months or a years time?
Cheers,
Fz

I havent had a note 3 and I can not answer you. As I saw, the note 3 is also a very good device. I myself am very happy with the lumia 1020. My minor issues are that almost every app costs something. Yes, you will say "you bought a phone for 600 euros and you do not spend 1 euro for an app?". For example xda developers app is free in iphone, free on android, costs in windows phone. I mean... come on guys.
My verdict is... if you want to experiment, flash roms, take good photos, then its the note. If you want a reliable phone (until now) with a perfect (in my opinion) camera, get the lumia.
I have both sitting in front of me right now.
Been test driving the Galaxy Note 3 and to be honest it doesn't suit me...I don't know, maybe I have become spoilt by the Windows Phone 8 OS, the Android environment is a cluttered mess and it took me a while to declutter the UI and put what I needed on a single screen.
I am also finding the Note 3 chassis looking a bit old now when compared to the Nokia 1020's beautiful modern design and it feels less like a phone and much more like a tablet (albeit with an old body (Matt black chassis would have really set this device off properly).
In use I found it very good (once I worked out where everything was) but I couldn't help feeling it need all that extra grunt from the hardware to make the new Android usable and it did lag sometimes when navigating through various apps and the UI where as in comparison the Lumia 1020 works great with the Dual-Core app and the Nokia software is a great in use because the software is solidly built throughout.
The Camera Pro app on the Lumia 1020 is great, really brings the lense to life once you spend the time to learn the ins and outs of the Camera features and I agree, the results are simply breathtaking (where as the quality on the Note 3 are quite frankly poor but that could be because I haven't set it up right?).
The Lumia is a Camera Phone, not a phone with a camera like the others and thats the point - it works first time everytime for me, no clutter, no fuss, everything is easily accessible and I bet most of the people who own the Note 3 don't use anywhere near 50% of what it offers.
I have 7 days to return one or both so going to give them a proper test drive but my heart is already set on the Lumia (but my head is saying Note 3 for future proofing).
Ha Ha I am pretty sure this has happened to a few people, easily overlooked though! Glad you solved the problem.
happened to me also buh its all good now haha
hahah
I would have kept my 1020 but...
I would have kept my 1020 but the lack of capability to record calls and archive entire time / date stamped SMS text threads meant that it was a non-starter. It makes the phone non-compliant for data retention purposes. It's a shame that some arcane US law found its way to disabling a global operating system.
