There is no best kernel. All the threads asking receive the same answer, that is that it all comes down to personal preference. Try them all and see what you like best.

yow dude! so based on your experience, which kernel do you prefer?
I tried Trinity, drains my battery faster than usual.

I've been using Matr1x, but some people have had issues. That's why I really can't recommend anything other than that you try a few and see what works best for you.

No issues with Matr1x dude...

I didn't say there were anything wrong with the kernel (I wouldn't use it myself if that were my belief) , I simply stated the fact that some people have run into some issues (S.O.D., etc.).

Sleep of Death, phone goes into sleep mode and freezes. Raising the Voltages helps.

I have tried every kernel out there & have had trouble in some form with all of them, except for the Glados Kernel. Rock solid stable, & a nice balance of performance / battery life. Using NStools allows you to get the most out of the kernel. I use it with live OC set at 105, & the lazy governer. This is what works well for me, it may differ for your phone.

The nice thing about it is the availability of the 1320MHz frequency (if needed), yet you can run an undervolted setting most of the time and enjoy great battery life.
Most other kernels seem to be either fast or good on battery, here you get both in one package. Give it a test drive!

I'm using Trinity now with 1.54 OC. It's snappy but drains battery fast.

I'm pretty much happy with the Matr1x Kernel, Netarchy dies on me, GLaDos is pretty good too, Trinity dies on me too...

by the way, MIUI has its own kernel? When you flash MIUI, what kernel do you get in default?

Whys it all the way up :O i mean OC'd just install TUV and use LiveOC 110 =/
It'll just OC it to about 1110 Mhz + 10% clock increase of the GPU

All ROMS and Kernel work differently on every phone ... some people have problems running Trinity and some people have problems running Ma1trix(I hope i spelt it correctly) anyways i don't mean to offend any of the devs but it depends on phone to phone
My Nexus runs smoothly with Nscollab .41 with TrinityEUV kernel (0.88 GHz) =]
Also Bugless Pete's GPA17 with the stock kernel which is btw Pete's own =]
and finally MIUI with TrinityUV android flavored kernel (1.0 Ghz) =]
to find out which one works best on your device you have to install and check them yourself

You just need to tweak the voltages and find something that works for you....
As a fresh NS user, I wanted something similar to stock + added notification bar toggle + kernel with BLN & Voodoo sound. Found this combo with TSM Pool party 1.3 ROM, which is based on Pete's work and his kernel. Works excellent:]
CM7 RC1 + T144 or TEUV if I feel like saving battery

Very true, I initially thought my phone doesnt work with matrix, Then i figured how to undervolt my phone and change profiles in set CPU, Now phone works great with matrix.
Really like TEUV though, but found it lagging a bit in high graphics games,.

idk, it feels sluggish sometimes, even when i find good settings, when i update it kinda goes back to being sluggish. sluggish is good tho. better than stock

Im running the Carbon Rom with the matrix 11 cfs kernel just wondering.. how do they make 1460mhz stable? do they lower the voltage? and if so how do i go about dropping the voltage and what is a safe range because its at 1450mv when i overclock it freezes and reboots.. sorry for all the questions lol

More voltages = better stability
some kernels try to undervolt as low as possible but some phones don't like that much UV so you have to manually raise voltages =]
Edit: If your uncomfortable about messing with the voltages you should go ahed to the Trinity thread and flash TUV OR TEUV =] there UV'd to a safe extent.
Every phone is different, might not be able to do it. Simms can run a 1.6 ghz

I sometimes think that Simms has a super Nexus or something my phone can go upto 1.5.xx

[Q] Have you managed to OC to 1460MHZ and keep stability?

I'm using AOSP+ ICS ROM with the latest Matr1x kernel. Whenever I try to OC to 1460 the phone freezes and I have to pull the battery, so I'm forced to run at a maximum of 1300MHz.
Also, on a related matter, is it good practice to use SetCPU with various profiles (battery<, temp>, screenoff, charging) for various frequencies? Or should I just use AOSP+ tweaks to chose a min and max frequency and let it be?

If you are using deep idle you shouldn't underclock since it causes a race-to-idle condition. In other words your battery will drain faster. If you don't use deep idle, feel free to underclock when the screen is off or whatever you want.

Just an update, Using CNA 1.4.0 and Matr1x v17, I am stable oc'ed to 1460.
this is what I am running
1)800/1460
2)gov =Ondemand
3)Scheduler =Noop
4)all voltages to +30 (used the cna rom's voltage tweaker)
I tried ShadowGun: the Leftover.. and It was flying. Of course, make sure that have enough battery or that you have a charger ready. But finally it works, try this and let me know
I can run it for 10-20 min of usage then get a freeze. I never raised the voltages before though. It seems like its working for other people. And the actual developer of Matrix Kernel is telling you to ....
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
AOKP (Build 25)
Eugene's Kernel (Speedy 7)
OC 800/100 (Lionheart)
Live OC (105)
It still amazes me how so many people that ask about overclocking have no frigging idea at all how cpus/gpus in general are binned etc.
I have a question. Why do you guys overclock that much? It might be snappy but battery life is just bad and it just doesn't worth it in my opinion.

Personally, I do it because I can. Seriously... I'm a geek, I love gadgets and tech and I like to tinker.
On the subject at hand, I'm still unable to OC to 1460 (ARM voltages +30, INT voltages +25) but at 1300 it runs fine, no issues whatsoever.
i can run 1460 stable all day. bigxie/matrix. just did +30 to all the voltages above 1000. deadline and lulzactive..
If you are a geek you would know about something as simple as binning chips. Do what a tech geek would do...look it up. Same thing the op should have done with his ?. Hell mathkid has a answer to his ? In the op of his kernel thread. Which is the kernel he is running

I'm running the latest harsh OC kernel with no problems.. And there's a new faux kernel 050 b1 that's out, I haven't tried it yet tho so can't say how it is..

Nobody can tell you which Kernel will work best for whatever ROM you wish to use it for because even though we have the 'same' phone, they are not all equally built. What may work with amazing battery life and performance to one person, might be terribly sluggish with terrible battery life for the next person. The only real way to tell which ROM+Kernel combo works best for your phone is to try every Kernel you think your phone 'likes'. Whether we all want to admit it or not, that is probably the best way.

I have tried Trinity and Faux. I would really like to get back to ridiculous battery life from this extended battery pack.

Trinity Kernels
I recently installed the Trinity Kernel and I don't really feel like I see a difference in my phone. I feel like my battery has shown no improvement. I installed the ti5 one but maybe I'll try the ELP one instead to see if I get anything different. I'm really looking for longer battery life. I used the phone theses days for about 30min of music a day (subway ride) and browsing here and there. Turned all syncing and app notifications off.
Check out the attached photos. I've seen screenshots of people with bar graphs showing their device at the top way ahead of everyone else.

Scott's CleanKernel v. IMO's leanKernel

IMO updated his TouchWiz kernel yesterday. Up until today I was using Scott's CleanKernel. Both are amazing kernels in my eyes. Both kernels are undervolted and overclocked. I had no issues with CleanKernel at all. I always seems to have bad battery life on the leanKernel until I flashed the updated .4 version this morning. Battery life seems much better compared to any leanKernel before the update. When running CleanKernel, I got a quadrant score of 4980. With leanKernel 0.4 I got 5160, both at stock 1.5GHz. I just want to see if others have noticed what I have between these two kernels.

personally i like leankernal because of how light and simple it is. no unneccesary weight and battery life is great.
Clean kernel is closer to stock than imos kernel which is kinda good and bad. The more you modify the kernel the more chance you'll have of breaking something but you also have the posabilty of making it way better if done right and everything comes out ok.
I would expect clean kernel to be more stable, less battery efficient, and a little slower overall. Where imos kernel could vary drastically with each update due to more major things being edited or changed. Right now imos beta. 4 has pretty good battery life over stock and is stable.
Personally I try the more modified stuff first and if I don't feel it pays off I move to something more stable or closer to stock until an update is released or problem addressed. Just my. 02

Clean Kernel is under volt by default for a given frequency. That is why the battery life is better. If you are looking for both performance and battery life, you should over clock Clean Kernel frequency to 1.89 (default is 1.5) max and min should be 400 range. GPU in Clean Kernel is also over clocked. "stable" is the key word to differentiate between the two. I would think that Clean Kernel is the most stable kernel of all. For speed they should be the same, for bells and whistles, Lean kernel would be your choice. To sum up, Clean Kernel give you both world, stable, performance and battery life... unless you want something else beside those 3.

So you're a cleankernel guy? I definitely agree with you about this being all three things. So as far as the GPU being overclocked, why does lean kernel .4 perform better in games

Like I have mentioned, if you aiming for gaming performance then you better to use lean, but then your battery life wouldn't be too good. Most of people just want a fast stable phone and a good battery life for daily use, then Clean will be a better choice. The reason it's stable because no tweaks to it except for OC/UV. Have you tried to play game with Clean over clocked to 1.89?

Actually I never thought of overclocking and playing the game until now. I guess Im just used to being at stock. But I will give it a try and see how that works. But what your saying definitely makes sense and should clear some things up. Performace + battery life = cleankernel. PERFORMANCE + PERFORMANCE = leankernel. Although the battery life on leankernel has dramatically been improved.

Haha.. you got it...almost.. Performance+battery life+stable=Clean. Super perfornance -less battery life - 10% stable=Lean kernel. Good luck bro.
ok I just setup an app profile in setcpu. so now everytime im in my game, its overclocked. When im using it normally, its at stock speed. With the screen off, its at min 190 and max 452. so far so good!
.5 is up now with more fixes.

Thanks for the heads up! More battery drain fixes. Although it says in order to revert back to stock we have to flash a ROM with a kernel. Would a nan backup work? Anyone tests the kernel yet
