ATT/TMO withdraw FCC merger application - T-Mobile LG G2x

Good stuff
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1111/69089.html

Not so much CANCELLED as the deal has been placed on Hospice Care... ie, AT&T is putting the loss of the breakup fees on their books NOW as if the deal was dead, and withdrawing the current FCC application... However it looks like they plan to reapply with a different deal.
The longer they drag this out, the longer T-Mo execs (and employees) can play the "let it rot on the vine" game, until it's an asset not worth having. Which is what AT&T wants anyway.

I actually kinda wanted this now. T-Mobile is dead on it's own. Has no plans whatsoever for LTE and DT pretty much gave up on them. So in the end I was kinda hoping for this to go through.

Hi all i'm glad At&t is not merging with T-mobileand the hell with there bandwidth cap that spread like a virus to every isps provider. Feels like our technology went back 20 years, I might as well move back to Yemen and get a pager.

A lot of what I was reading, AT&T pulled out temporarily to stop the FCC from releasing the documents on why it feels this deal would not be good for the US consumers and thus preventing the judge that was to hear the case from seeing this, allowing them a last ditch effort to apply later with a different approach. basically they knew if the relevant information was released, they would be denied, so they stopped that to come up with different approach that may have a slightly better chance of passing, somewhat like pulling together for a Hail Mary.

Att= poor service, poor customer care.
Tmo= decent service, excellent customer care.
Im good the way it is.

+1 !

The sad, unfortunate part of this whole affair is that whether the deal falls through or not, DT is adamant about wanting to get out of the US market. They don't want to continue funding their venture into this country. Even though they are making a profit here, for some reason they just simply want out.
They will sell, to AT&T or whomever the government allows them to. Although I would vastly prefer just about anyone to AT&T.

Att can go to .....well you know.

I'm actually fine with the fact that TMO has no plans for LTE. HSPA+ is fast enough on the mobile phone, and it doesn't come with the penalty of the huge battery drain from LTE. I'd rather have a slightly slower internet speed than a dead phone by 10AM.

Well Simple Mobile uses Tmobiles network as well as a few others.
Maybe Verizon will pick it up and start using all the bands.
Or why don't they could auction it
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV

Saw this, was definitely interesting. Personally, I didn't really care what happened. Thinking about it, I am actually pretty happy that it didn't go through. I have loved using T-Mobile from the start, far superior than any other choice at the moment here.

AT&T and T-Mobile only withdrew the application in order to prevent the FCC from slapping a big fat DENIED stamp on the acuisition prior to the DOJ hearing to judge whether or not the acquisition would create a merger. If the FCC had denied AT&T and T-Mobile's application the DOJ would almost certainly have won the case against the acquisition. Now, however, the plan for AT&T and T-Mobile is to go to the DOJ hearing and get cleared of anti-competitive and monopoly checks and then take their case back to the FCC with the DOJ behind them.
Hopefully some politicians will strike up against the acquisition due to this shady tactic of dodging around the FCC's disapproval, but with the current political climate and the DOJ's history with mergers and acquisitions over the past couple of years I have little hope that the customer's interests will be served and AT&T and DT will likely get their way.
I think my girlfriend put it the best way today: AT&T was afraid mommy FCC would say no to AT&T eating up T-Mobile so AT&T decided to run away from mommy and ask daddy instead. It's the old trick one parent into saying yes trick.

http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/ATT-Cooking-Up-New-Plan-to-Save-TMobile-Deal-117180
You people seriously thought, they would back-off so easily?
Deal will most likely to be approved eventually. Maybe not this year but next year or so

I hope you do realize that unless the FCC says no a small group of android hackers/developers won't even cross AT&T's mind. Not trying to be a downer but it's true. And honestly it'll probably help with the service we aren't switching to AT&T we're merging not switching. We will at bare minimum receive the same service if not better.

I agree with all that 100%.
Also, "SaveOurDroid"? What does a Verizon Motorola device have to do with AT&T buying T-Mobile?
I realize that the few hundred of us won't matter to the fcc, but it might be worth a shot....
And by droid I think they mean all android phones since att prioritizes iOS over android.

AT&T reps get their info from phone arena

So yesterday i was talking to a AT&T rep, and i had asked some questions about the phone and she was reading exactly everything from phone arena. word by word, i even brought up the Atrix just to confirm my theory. yep.

We get our info from whatever basis we can. I don't take offense to this because it's partly true. Any of you other AT&T reps (like myself) know that within our company you have the "haves" and "have-nots"...personally, if you're on XDA you're a "HAVE." You are intelligent enough to read and translate what half the stuff on this site means. Think about your counterparts in your stores/locations. We all have that handful that knows bullmoose about these devices. The "Pantechs" of the company, lol. We know how to browse the web to find what we need as AT&T doesn't necessarily give us the FULL specs on phones-just what they want us to push to our customers. So, just know going in that you have a grab bag of reps with different knowledge bases and strengths on these subjects...be prepared...

i have to say that it is better than the sprint reps i have dealt with. i was checking out the epic for a girlfriend that liked my phone and was on sprint and i didnt like the contacts, launcher, and mms apps compared to other sgs phones. the dumb biatch kept repeating that it was the best phone on the market, and im like i know i have an sgs, it's right here and att had it before you had this. and she kept trying to tell me how the epic was so great, i kept finding reasons tw3 apps were better than tw 2.5 apps and asked about call forwarding so it can use google voice as voice mail, told her it was free on att and i didnt want surcharges for call forwarding. she tried to sell me there transcription service which is also a pay service. i gave up and walked out. it wasnt that she was trying to show knowledge, it was that she had a nasty tone of voice and discredited everything i said with the comment "this is the best phone on the market" and showed me no respect. it was clear she was just regurgitating stuff fed to her because we couldn't have a discussion. my att reps like talking to me because they usually learn something.

okay sure, anything specific that draws you to an iphone?
yes. it has 4g and apps.

LMFAO!
yeah i do see people go into the att store and ask for an iphone. not "hey im interested in a smartphone and would like to know what's out there" just "i want to get an iphone, how much is it" i just smile and think their loss.
atleast i can get insureance on my infuse and the price scales over time. the iphone is still $300 for a 32gig version. a captivate or inspire is down to $50-$100 and the infuse as a new release is $200 but is sure to go down with the release of the attain.

Unknown.

So I went to a few stores today that sells att phones. I asked everyone in all 5 of the stores about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note LTE, noone even knew about it as if it will be coming out 6 years from now -.- noone knew there was one even coming out let alone the name :/ it kind of makes me sad when the consumer knows more then the sales reps. They should train more in my opinion this was just my little experiance for the day just thought I'd share. Anyone else looking forward to the note lte for att?

In-store reps definitely don't know anything. Most reps aren't like us and simply don't care. I usually come across some reps who give out good information about upcoming devices. These reps are always over the phone as they have quick access to the database. Try calling about a general question, talk to them for a bit, and when you're about to end the conversation, pop the question.

Ive sold phones for five years in three locations. I can tell you most of us know about phones as soon as they are rumors. As someone said earlier if we don't sell it we really don't care. To be honest if someone asked me about the note I would kinda just try to end it fast unless we were doing pre orders as asking me about a phone I cant sell isn't making me commission. If it is slow though I will talk about announced upcoming phones for quite awhile. Also most consumers walk in and say i want android or iphone not asking specifics

That's understandable. Wouldn't it be better to actually care and inform a consumer of an upcoming device? By informing them of said device, they might wait for it and pay the $200 with the contract. I understand you want to make some money as well but I guess from a personal standpoint I would help the person that cares as much as I do.

I agree. I've perused tablets in Best Buy and after engaging the nearest 'team member' for less than 3 minutes, I realize that I know more than they do.
It's the same experience when going to the auto parts store. There are some people who can carry on informed conversation, but 90% are the type who watch fast & furious movies in awe, and know nothing about repair or maintenance or they can only look up part numbers.
Basically, lower your expectations.
This is why I get mad when I've tried many times to get a job in those kind of places to no avail because I don't seem to have any big time qualifications to my record yet if I go into any outlet store and begin talking about phones, the sales rep looks at me like I'm making up things or shocked I know anything.

I have had similar experience with applying for jobs at auto parts stores. The 'now hiring' sign is displayed for several months and the staff changes about every 3 weeks, but I never get called. For a while there was an older woman who not only knew nothing about cars but she also needed help to use the computer program to look up parts.
I finally realized that these people will work for less money than I will because I actually know what I am doing. It really is sad that people with any level of technical or mechanical ability don't actually work at the retail level because they can't get enough money.
And don't get me started on the people who work at Home Depot . .
I have no past work experiance. I'm 19 years old have been the "bad" kid because I used to be a "black magic" hacker I've gotten introuble from schools best buys and targets because of it but now I'm past all that I do phones tablets anything mobile. There is never a time when I'm in best buy that I'm back in the computer/phone area and usually an older citizen is talking to a sales Rep about which one is better and the sales Rep says well product A is $1299 with 4gb ram touchscreen is way better then product B $899 8gb ram and so on but they go by the price as the sales Rep was walking her to the register I kindly walked up and said "hello ma'am I noticed you were interested in two different so-so" the sales Rep called the manager and had me kicked out for costing him the sale xD but they wont hire me? I don't mean to overstep the rules of polite conversation but you may wish to think about your image. It isn't fair that we judge based on looks, but it happens.

Keep unlocking phones legal!!

This really is a USA thread only but all can get involved. Recently our government has ruled that unlocking phones without carrier permission is now illegal. Please sign this petition to change such law so that we can own the technology we buy!!!
http://wh.gov/yA9n
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I don't see what's so unfair about this.
This impacts people who are buying carrier-subsidized devices. This is a practice that has always benefited the carrier much more than the consumer.
This ruling shouldn't be something to get mad about directly - people should be mad about how badly they're being screwed over by subsidies in general. I think it's fair enough that if you sign up to be screwed, you get your full screwing.
Also, if you actually read the thing, it doesn't apply to used devices. This only applies to new phones bought under contract wherein you had full disclosure about the phone's state and the carrier's policy - no one should hedge their bets on being able to circumvent the terms they agreed to.
Even if you buy a phone at full price from a carrier it is still illegal to unlock it without the carriers approval. Thats my issue.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
See the problem is that they claim they are losing money on people unlocking their phones then going to another carrier. The flaw here is that they aren't losing anything, if someone cancels the contract they pay the etf, and if they don't they are still paying monthly because of the contract. Its just another scheme to hurt our money. Carriers can get in on the cell phone unlocking business and charge money to unlock their own cellphones, and there won't be anyone to compete

this is the result of old baby boomers who do not understand or appreciate info tech but "represent us" in govt + ridiculous amounts of corporate lobby money in politics + people surprised and shocked when they realize they voluntarily screwed themselves by signing bad contracts.
that said, people are too freaked out by this. ask yourself: will you still unlock your phone even if its illegal? if course you would and so would most people. so, who cares?

If I paid full price for my phone, I should be able to do whatever I like to it.
But the real impact is: this law kills the spirit of technology innovation.
I see this as an issue between the consumer and carrier. Stop buying phones that don't come unlocked - demand that carriers make it an option or buy used / phones sold as unlocked only.
Carriers are slowly realising that they're losing business if they don't give people the options they want - see Sprint rolling out a pre-paid service (not just the other brands they own).
If a business is screwing you, take your business to one whose terms you like. It's like pay-day loans - terrible for you, but it's your choice to do something terrible for yourself.

If you buy your phone on contract, the cost of phone is almost always subsidized and you're playing by their rules. You're essentially leasing the device.
If you buy your phone at full mrsp price, then yes, you should be free to do whatever.
I dont see how this stifles tech advancements at all; I just see the creation of more underground and gray markets for unlocking services. All the bodega cellphone stores will still unlock phones for 30 bucks; they may just advertise less. Hell, they probably wont change that. Do you think cops will even care? Not where I live.
And unlocking tools/codes/apps will still be all over the internet. They may not be on the US Google Play Store anymore. Big deal.

Exactly. Its not that big of a deal if you.have the know how. I unlocked my galaxy note 2 subsidized without my carriers permission. In 30 seconds flat to work on any carrier. I could care less what government agency cares. And care less about.any legislation anyways as i am officially branded by.my government as an outlaw anyways. I have no respect for worthless laws.
Nor do the police have any means of enforcing this at the moment anyways. And yes i know because i take the.exact same.classes that.digital forensic offocers.take.at.my.college

I was going to make this same exact thread.
Surprised to see so little activity on this topic especially here on XDA.
I would assume 95% of XDA members phones are unlocked/hacked so this would affect us.
Doesn't matter if you don't think it will be enforced or not, you shouldn't have to worry about being prosecuted just because you want to experiment with your own phone.
We need to reject laws like these that are hostile to the consumer and show greedy corporations and politicians that we are paying attention and won't stand for this crap.
Agreed

Even if you buy a phone at full price from a carrier it is still illegal to unlock it without the carriers approval. Thats my issue.

Okay now that's just wrong on the carrier's part because when you pay full price, you literally own the phone.

I don't like such politics. I want devices free!!!
Too little too late?
There was a thread for this, your probably not seeing it bc no one has posted on it in 4 or 5 days. Its really sad too especially considering that this is probably the first in a line of laws to be unfairly passed that screw the consumer. To everyone overseas: not everyone wants to do something they know is technically illegal, enforced or not. The options for unlocked phones get pretty narrow if you like a certain kind of phone, and even narrower if you are tied to a particular service that has better reception in your area like say verizon like with me. I live in the middle of nowhere...lol but that's a different subject. The point is this sucks bc it takes away our options as consumers. We shouldn't have to not buy locked phones until all the carriers get the hint and safe to say that would take time. Obviously they see the wisdom in this move for them or they would not have done it. I was like the 14,000th signature on this petition and have been watching and promoting it everywhere, and sadly it looks like we have lost the needed speed to finish with 100k sigs. At this rate we will finish with about 80k give or take i figure. Not saying give up bc i wont, but everyone that is in the u.s. and understands whats involved needs to pick it up big time as this gets less media coverage. Spread the word!

This big brother administration keeps ramming through laws that hurt the consumer!
If we purchase a non subsidized phone at full retail do they lower our monthly bill? Can we carrier unlock?
The answer to both is no. Funny how they get it all and we get nothing in return. Enough is enough already.
I will gladly pay full retail if I "own" my phone, no carrier lock and unlocked/s-off, and they reduce my bill accordingly.
Just remember, they use OUR airwaves, and now are abusing the legal system to hold us hostage so they can profit. Pretty sure this is not legal.

The government sucks. Did y'all know the reason why walkie talkies are no more, is because they CANT trace those calls. I used to work at boost, all the drug dealers (not the normal street guy, but the guy from a mexican cartel) would buy cheap throw away phone since they killed walkie talkie. every week i would sell these guys a good 20 phones. Was mainly blackberries. I wonder why.

you should assume that any electronic communications that you do, is not private.
Has anyone actually looked at their tos (terms of service) to see if this IS legitmately a breach of contract? I'm not surprised nor do I ultimately care that I'm being recorded...I figured as much but I have nothing to hide either. What DOES upset me is that we were not notified of such....Most states require that we must let the other party know if we are recording them...but then the government totally blows that off and just does it without our knowledge (even if we pretty much assumed they did)....and the whole lets sacrifice our privacy in order to offer better security for our country...uh no...I don't trust anyone but myself, wife and daughter for my security heh. Again....just curious as to if anyone has checked or knows of the actual legalities of this and if it IS indeed a breach of contract.

Old news boys, take a look here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECHELON
Ho hummm...... the NSA has been intercepting all our calls and processing the voice and data for many years now, so Verizon forking over a few bills and records doesn't mean a lot .
Its all covered by the Intelligence Oversight Act which says that congress has oversight and must be informed , so they are all complicit in this violation of our constitutional rights, so who you gonna call, the UN?
They'll certainly be bored with my records. I haven't used 50 minutes in two years. Data, on the other hand, is a different story

Do you think people can get out of contract without have to pay early term fee because of this?

Does seem to be a "materially adverse change" or at the very least, adverse.
The average person will forget about it anyway.
