[Q] HTC Sync drivers won't work - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to root my girlfriend's Evo Shift 4G. I downloaded the latest version of HTC Sync to my computer but when I connect the phone under sync mode it never detects the phone. Windows 7 starts to install the drivers but fails to install them. I reinstalled windows 7 32 bit no antivirus software and fresh sync install and it still won't work. I went into device manager and it showed Android Phone with a yellow explanation point. I removed the usb cable, uninstalled the android phone device, rebooted, plugged the usb cord into a different usb port and it still won't work. At this point I have no idea what to do in order to get the computer to see the phone so I can use ADB to get the phone rooted. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

i banged my head over this for hours yesterday only to find that the problem was i was using a knock-off ebay usb cable. once i tried the "official" usb cable that came with the phone (has a HTC tag on it) it worked perfectly!!

Definately check the Micro USB Cable. I've had knock off cables be the cause of several issues. I always make sure to use the HTC factory cable. Also make sure and check your ports on the phone, and PC. Make sure they're clean. Dust and dirt collect in them as time goes on.

Okay thanks I'll try the HTC cable. I was using the cable from my Nexus S 4G maybe the phone's port was dirty. I'll check things out. Thanks for the ideas!

Here to help

Okay I tried cleaning the contacts on 3 different USB cables, cleaned the usb port of the Shift, and still no luck. If it's connected in storage mode or charge only the computer shows an HTC Android Phone. However, once USB debugging is turned on it doesn't know the phone is there. Any other ideas? Is there a different driver that debugging mode uses that maybe I don't have?

Okay now I tried hooking up my Nexus S 4G to the computer and once USB debugging is turned on the computer couldn't locate a driver. It's something about debugging that's messing up my computer.

Make sure USB Debugging is turned on. Menu-Settings-Applications-Develpment. Make sure USB Debug is checked.

He said the problem is the phone isn't recognized once debugging is checked.
This is strange though.. I have rooted my Shift, a Nexus S and installed CM on my Touchpad and never had any issues with the drivers. Maybe try removing and reinstalling the drivers? Obviously something is not agreeing with your PC.

When USB debugging is turned on, windows doesn't find the phones. :-(

Sounds like you need to update the HTC drivers. I used the ones off the Revolutionary site for the EVO4G.

Any way you could link me to where you got the drivers?

Tethering no longer working on captivate

I was using tethering on captivate to my work laptop, my kid accidentally bumped the phone and it came unplugged from the usb cable. Now anytime I try to use tethering it will not connect to the laptop. Usb ports on the laptop work with other devices. Phone is running serendipity 6.4. Phone charges fine and I am able connect to laptop with usb debugging. Any ideas? Thanks!

Have you tried rebooting the phone and computer? Try a different USB cable maybe.
Yep! I have rebooted everything and I have 3 different cables. No luck yet. I was hoping this would be an easy fix

it may be a driver issue on the computer. Assuming you are on a windows machine go to device manager and see if there are any device errors. check under Network Adapters, see if you have Samsung Android USB Remote NDIS Network Device listed. If its not listed right click scan for hardware changes. Update or repair the driver.

I will try that thanks

I've always found Wireless Tether to be more reliable than Mobile AP.

This has the sound of a hardware issue. I would try to get wireless tethering up and running
Like the others said try wireless tethering, I've never gotten it to work any other way with my laptop.
You could also try the reinstall drivers option in Kies, when I was having trouble with Odin detecting the phone even after it had worked before that option in Kies fixed it.
Also, try a different USB port if you haven't already, you mentioned trying different cables but not USB ports.

Odd USB mounting issue

So I have a post floating around on XDA from months ago about my usb mounting not coming up when plugging my phone to PC. I have been using my digital cable box which has a usb connection to charge my phone. Oddly enough it shows my usb connected sometimes when plugged into that but never when connected to PC. Sorry if any typos i hate typing on my phone. Would love to get my usb mounting back. I just use airdroid for file transfer but need wifi to use it.

Make sure the correct drivers are installed. Connect it and check on device manager how your phone is identified.
you can find the drivers on the iset thread

Problems with mounting sdcard on ubuntu

Ok I need help I can't get my phone to charge or mount my SD card on my computer.. I have ubuntu studio, I never had any problems till a few weeks ago. I now thought it was the ics ROM I was running so I went back to gb and a sence ROM. Still no connection. Yes usb debugging is on. And toggled it many times, and fast boot on power setting toggled it too many times. I am now pulling my SD card out then putting in my card reader to work at this time.. Any help would be a great help. Thanks

Is it only when you use your computer? It could be the data cable is messed up or the USB port on your PC is messed up.

Tried different cables and usb and computers also. No charge or SD mount. But can charge off wall plug
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
Hmmm.... so you cant get it to mount to any computer. I hate to say it but it sounds like a hardware issue. Almost like one of the pins is broken that reads the connection for data use.

[SOLVED] Issues when trying to connect to PC

Hello everyone,
So all of a sudden I'm having problems when trying to connect my new One S to my PC. This is really confusing so read carefully.
Typically, when we connect the device to a PC, the LED lights up and the USB icon shows up in the status bar. Here's the thing. When I try to connect my HOS to the PC, the LED blinks asynchronously and the icon on the status bar disappears and reappears. It's like the connection is loose.
My first thought was that there should be a hardware issue.
I tested the cable first for any issues. I tried another cable and the problem persisted. When I tried to connect my other device, an Xperia X8, there was no problem whatsoever. So, definitely, the cable is not producing the problem.
Next, I thought maybe the Micro USB port on my One S was the problem. I took a q-tip and cleaned it, although it already was clean. Tried again connecting it to the PC, no luck. But when I tried connecting it to my Laptop instead, there was no problem at all! And there's also no problem when charging it (from the wall charger).
My next thought was the PC's USB ports where causing the problem. I took a vacuum cleaner p) and dusted off any lint there was. So I tried connecting my HOS again and still no luck. Tried all 4 USB ports and even a USB extension cord.
If needed, my PC is running Ubuntu 12.04, my Laptop Win7 and my HOS is running CM10.
Now I'm really confused and I have no idea what to do next. Any thoughts?

Sorry but I gotta bump this.
I tried connecting it with Virtuous ROM, JB Sense and the issue is still present. I'm pretty sure it's not the ROM's fault.

It's Ubuntu, there are no drivers. On my laptop with Windows, there's no issue and I didn't install any HTC drivers. Just the regular drivers Windows installs when detecting a new device.
Can someone please merge this thread with mine so we get the right answers in one thread please, this would help both of us and also anyone else that may come across our issues?

Thanks
Any Admin, please can you?
I should probably note that I'm not using an HTC Micro USB cable. Both cables I tried were Sony (Xperia X8) cables.

Well it's my father's laptop so I'm not allowed to mess around with it. So no, I can't install Linux there.

I think its the chipset that Linux is having issues with so maybe look into updating that or changing it for another version.
Could you tell me more? I don't understand.

The chipset is pretty much the motherboard which of cause controls USB and other stuff. So you need find out what you on and then see if there is an update.
So I should check if there is a software update for my motherboard. Sorry, I'm not well informed concerning hardware
Will do.

Hello!
Which Version is your ROM at? Everything except the Jelly bean update (4.1) should work out of the box.
From jelly bean on you will need libmtp. You want to use mass storage? As far as i know One S has just recently been added to libmtp things. So if there would be a problem you may contact the bugowner or just wait for a working kio slave with mtp.
Greetings,
R
PS.: I use opensuse so things are for sure different. I will just wait for a kio slave that works.
Maybe my information is not precise enough or not correct but you could give it a go:

HTC inspire 4G connect with pc problem

Ok so I picked up a inspire for 20 bucks and nothing is wrong with it except it won't connect to any pc. I tried factory resetting it. Installed the drivers every way possible through sync manager and just vs the drivers then self from the ace kit. Still nothing happens or pops up on either the phone or pc. Note: in one instants my computer did pop up once saying last device could not be recognized. IV tried on win 8, win xp, and even on my car stereo for mass storage for music and nothing. Yes usb debugging is on and I set it for charge only and ask every time when connected via ace kit notes. Any help would be appreciated.... Owe and I even cleaned the port out of all the lint and dust.
