Hi all. I'm new to all this after sacking my iphone in favour of the wonderful Desire a couple of weeks ago. I bought the phone on an O2 (UK) pay and go contract and have put my old iphone sim in which works fine. I am keen to get the 2.2 update so paid to unlock my phone having read that unlocked phones can get it now. However, my phone appears to be unlocked as I can use my wife's 3 sim in there but I still can't get the update yet. How do I do this? Do I need to put in a sim from a provider that has released the update already or is there another way round this? Any help would be appreciated as I am learning my way round what appears to be a great OS and phone, even though I appear to have wasted cash unlocking it!
Thanks, in advance.
Note to self-read the forums..!
I've seen how to do it via the Gold card method but would appreciate advice as to which ROM to use...I'm assuming as I'm branded to O2 the O2 specific one is correct? 124865?
I can't post links yet unfortunately.
Hello im not from the US, and i was wondering the following, i was checking amazonwireless, and i saw a phone im interested because the price(its cheaper) as Replacement Phone Phone only (no service)(ATT)
So im wondering:
1. Since im not from the US i do not have any ATT SIM card/Line, i was wondering if i will need it, or i can just buy the phone and unlocked and then pop in my sim card?
2. Does amazonwireless requires activations for Replacement Phone Phone only (no service)? or i can just unlock it and pop in the sim?
Thank you anyone for your help.
My friend gave me an AT&T Inspire to take with me to the U.K. The phone is no longer under contract with AT&T, but the phone has never been rooted, has no simcard in it, never been modded, and has never been unlocked.
When I arrive in the U.K. I want to buy a U.K. simcard and use the phone in the U.K. What do I need to do to the phone so it will work in the U.K. with a U.K. simcard?
I have been reading these messageboards for the past several days, and I am getting lots of mixed signals on what I need to do. I would be very appreciative if someone could post the easiest possible steps to take, so that I may use this phone in the U.K. with a U.K. simcard.
I write about technology, including android smartphones at my website.

There are 2 ways to go about this. Easiest would be to get the unlock code from AT&T, but there's no guarantee they'll give it to you. If your friend is still a customer, have him call and they should give it to him if his account is in good standing. Second option would be to root it. This is obviously harder than typing in an unlock code, but it also makes the phone work so much better. If you are somewhat tech saavy, you shouldn't have a problem.
You have a few options since all you want to do is sim unlock.
1) your friend could give att a call and get them to unlock it for him
2) root it with the ace hack kit. That will simunlock it plus the benefits of custom roms if you choose-my personal choice) plus its free unlike below
3)try one of those sim unlock websites if you so choose
NOTE: you will not get 3g, nothing you can do about it att and Europe use different frequencies for 3g. You will be stuck on edge but still use it.
NOTE 2: just because it is unlocked doesn't mean all carriers/sim cards work. Most do but as I've seen a few in the dhd threads, some people had issues with the sim/carrier or both
Edit- beaten to the punch

What about using Bubby's simple root tool to root the phone? Would that be easier than the Ace hack kit?
By the way, the phone is running gingerbread (2.3.3) with Sense 2.1
easier than the ace hack kit would involve not rooting at all. i would suggest only using ace

I rooted the phone using the Ace hack kit. Seems to have worked. I checked for S-OFF, and the phone now to has S-OFF. Most difficult part was properly prepping my desktop machine before I ran the Ace Hack kit.
How do I decide which U.K. simcard to buy? Should I wait until I arrive in the U.K. to buy the simcard, or should I buy one online before my trip? I will be all over the U.K. during my trip. How can I find out which U.K. simcard will be the most reliable no matter where I travel in the U.K? Also, obviously which U.K. simcard works best with a rooted, unlocked AT&T Inspire?

I would wait to you get there. Just ask them to try out their sim card to make sure it works on your phone.you'll notice right away if the simcard will work. The one I've seen the most with an issue was their 3 network. BUT it wasnt all the time, many people have no issues with any of the networks, but occasionally for what ever reason it doesn't work. Their was thus thread with this Guy I was helping out and he never beleived that he was unlocked because one sim card wouldn't work. If the hack.kit worked your sim unlocked but he refused to believe unrooting and rerooting several times to find some mystical super unlock. He never got it too work and the thread died out
That's why I added that notice on.my previous post. Just try out the sim and see if it plays nice with your phone. As to which sim is better, I don't know. I would look at all the carriers coverage maps and pick which one will give you the coverage you need with all your travels
Hello,
A friend of mine is going to Australia in a month and is looking into his phone options. He has the S3 on Verizon and is wonderign what his options are for having a phone with him for the 2 weeks he will be gone. Is it possible for him to use the S3 with a local prepaid sim or will he need to explore other avenues?
I don't see him rooting his phone for this.
Thanks
this is a world phone. as long as the bands for data are similar he should get 3G with theproper SIM Card inserted

So I'm receiving this Sprint s7 from my dad for christmas. he didn't know it wouldn't work he already shipped it and i dont know how this would work here in Canada. He won't be able to request unlock it to sprint because he needs to pay it off first or things like that as i red the internet, sprint won't let it and plus, he just bought it last black friday. Is there any possible way to unlock this because it's a cdma and everyone knows it doesn't even use a sim card. I need help on this one, i don't need 4g LTE nor 3g or any other data capabilities. Just the ability to text and call is fine. I was wondering if there would be a firmware available to flash to unlock it, i don't know if there is i can't find one. I would be willing to do that 3rd party control-my-computer using teamviewer option which im very skeptical to do if there would be no other option. It would be the best chrismas gift to help me out lol thank you! Merry Christmas!!!
