Question about phone unlocked phone contract

I have a tmobile G2 , and I am
thinking about purchasing a Galaxy
Nexus. However, the Galaxy Nexus
will only be released on Verizon,
meaning that I will have to buy an
unlocked version. If I buy an unlocked
version of the phone and put my
simcard in it, will my plan with tmobile
be transferred to that phone? My
brother told me that the plan with
tmobile is only based off the simcard,
so I can put my card in any
unlocked phone without having to
start a new contract with tmobile
because I will still have the same
number and be on the same plan. Is
that how it works? Is it as easy as
putting my simcard in the unlocked
phone and using it? I have seen some people who are buying an unlocked version talking about going with a month to month plan on it. I just want to know how exactly the sim card/contract transfer would work on the unlocked phone. Sorry if this makes me sound stupid.

[Q] Total noob here. Have some questions.

So, I have wanted to be able to mess around with phones for a while, and figured this could be a good place to start.
First: I do not use a smartphone at the moment. I am cheap and use a Pantech GoPhone. I had a US Cellular (CDMA ) LG Optimus U but decided I wanted a full keyboard phone and service outside of my area.
Anyways, I want to know if my GoPhone SIM Card will work in a Blackberry or an Android device, that is either unlocked or locked. I need to do this WITHOUT buying the smartphone data service for an extra 25 bucks a month.
Also, I need to know how to unlock stuff. I want to be able to buy a phone on eBay or something and unlock it and flip it around and sell it for more.
Thanks guys!

You can put your SIM card into any other AT&T branded smartphone. Assuming it's a 3g card, anyway. As for the data plan? AT&T will eventually realize you're on their network with a smartphone without a data plan. You basically need to buy it.
EDIT: With unlocking phones, they're all different. You would really need to go to the specific device's subforum here and check out how to do it.
some noob questions
I hear that AT&T has some software to detect your device and read your usage. There are ways to get around this it depends on the device ,you can mask your imei for instance so they can't detect the type of device your using ,works on a few pads with voice comm
capabilities such as the mediapad (springboard in the U.S)
As for unlocking ..depends on the manufacturer as they are all different

[Q] Overseas Phone Questions (ATT)

Hi all,
In July I am studying abroad in Australia for about 5 months and am wondering what to do for phone service. I currently am on ATT and have an HTC Inspire 4G. What was recommended by the school is going through Global Gossip and purchasing a phone+credit. However, I also see that the website has an option to just purchase a sim card. Would it be better to unlock my phone and use the sim card or to just buy one of there phones? Also, should I rather be looking into activating the international services through ATT itself? Perhaps there are better alternative options to the ones I have outlined above? Sorry, I have never had to deal with this situation before.
Thanks!

[Q] AT&T Nexus S International Unlock Help?

Hi all, my parents are heading out of the country soon. They wanted to pick up a cheap android phone to take with them and to give to a relative there, and I was suggesting the Nexus S (it's around $100 on craigslist and ebay)
However, I'm curious if there is any sort of carrier-lock placed by AT&T on their phones that makes it so I can't slap in another SIM card from an international provider?
I've always heard nexuses don't have any carrier locks, but wanted to clarify. If it does have a carrier-lock, is there an easy guide to getting around it?
Thanks in advance!
There is no lock.
Sweet! So I can just pop in any SIM card and get service (don't need data really)?
Yes. As long as the carrier supports the bands the phone uses. Almost all do.

Prepaid phones

I'm on a t-mobile plan and broke my nexus 6 the other day and I need a cheap temporary phone to use for a week until I can get a replacement.
1. Can I just buy a prepaid t-mobile phone and plug in my sim card or does it need to be unlocked?
2. I've never unlocked a phone before. How easy/cheap is it to unlock one of those walmart family prepaid phones? Is unlocking something I can do at home?
bump
I would look at unlocked phones on Amazon.they're are plenty of affordable options available. then just put your SIM in and turn it on.just be sure you get a phone with the right SIM slot to match the sim card you have.happy hunting....I think blu has good options as well as Alcatel.
