[Q] Overseas Phone Questions (ATT) - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
In July I am studying abroad in Australia for about 5 months and am wondering what to do for phone service. I currently am on ATT and have an HTC Inspire 4G. What was recommended by the school is going through Global Gossip and purchasing a phone+credit. However, I also see that the website has an option to just purchase a sim card. Would it be better to unlock my phone and use the sim card or to just buy one of there phones? Also, should I rather be looking into activating the international services through ATT itself? Perhaps there are better alternative options to the ones I have outlined above? Sorry, I have never had to deal with this situation before.
Thanks!

[Q] Newbie here; hoping someone can help.

I have a HTC Pro Touch phone that was my company phone for about two months before Verison took over Alltel in my area. My company switched to ATT iphones at that time. I have recently decided that maybe I could use this nice phone with ATT. Much to my disappointment I found through a little research that Alltel and ATT networks are not compatible and the phone and can't be unlocked for use with ATT.
Its seems that my only option now is to find someone with a nice phone that would like to trade hoping that they might be in the same situation in reverse. Have I missed something that can still make this phone work somehow? If not does anyone have a good idea, of how I could make a fair trade?
Thank you and I hope this post is ok for this section.

You could SIM unlock it, but it's not very cheap. There are some nice links in the Raph Wiki that points to SIM unlocking services.
@racing5k
You can try putting it up for sale onbay.com or amazon.com. If you want to avoid registering a selller account on any of those two site (which is free to do), you put a free listing on craigslist.com, always deal local and accept payments in cash and in person. Amazon and ebay will charge you seller/listing fees, there are no fees to list and sell on craigslist. You have a CDMA version of this phone. What you need is the GSM version, which for ATT was branded the HTC Fuze. I have the Fuze but am having a issue with it (battery indicator says it is fully charged at 34%) which I have yer to resolve.
@ZoneBlaze
sim unlock will not work, Alltel uses CDMA technology and ATT uses GSM. racing5k has a CDMA version of the phone, the two technologies are not compatible with each other.

[Q] Quick question about unlocking a phone for use in Germany

Hey all, sorry this is a noob question, but I am a U.S. soldier who is to be stationed in Germany for 3 years on Thursday. Originally I was going to wait until I got over there to get a phone, but after seeing the prices compared to what I can get here I decided against it, and my buddy told me about buying phones here in the U.S. and unlocking them to put on German networks.
Well my question is if I buy the HTC Inspire 4G from AT&T or Samsung Captivate (or any Quadband droid phone that takes a sim) without a plan, how would I go about getting the Unlock code (cheapest way possible) and would it be 100% certain to work over there as it's quadband and takes SIM cards?

[Q] AT&T Nexus S International Unlock Help?

Hi all, my parents are heading out of the country soon. They wanted to pick up a cheap android phone to take with them and to give to a relative there, and I was suggesting the Nexus S (it's around $100 on craigslist and ebay)
However, I'm curious if there is any sort of carrier-lock placed by AT&T on their phones that makes it so I can't slap in another SIM card from an international provider?
I've always heard nexuses don't have any carrier locks, but wanted to clarify. If it does have a carrier-lock, is there an easy guide to getting around it?
Thanks in advance!
There is no lock.
Sweet! So I can just pop in any SIM card and get service (don't need data really)?
Yes. As long as the carrier supports the bands the phone uses. Almost all do.

[Q] Verizon M8 for Europe Backpacking Trip/European SIMs

About to be backpacking and traveling around Europe.
Option 1: I have a rooted Verizon HTC One M8. Thinking of doing a Three - UK Simcard over there as it's very cost effective and they even have an unlimited data plan add on pack for 15 euros. I know that most recent Verizon smartphones are sim unlocked. Would my 4G work with most prepaid SIM cards including Three's sim card? I'm a little confused as to how it works and I'm worried that, yes my Verizon HTC one would work, but would I get 4G signal or is it mostly 3G signal? I'm assuming I keep my Verizon plan but just suspend my Verizon account while I'm abroad?
Option 2: Buy an Unlocked Used Galaxy S5 for a couple hundred bucks and include whatever SIM I choose in Europe, suspend Verizon and Keep HTC in the states, reactivate when back.
Option 3: Buy a OnePlus tomorrow for around the same as a GS5 and include whatever SIM I choose in Europe, suspend Verizon and Keep HTC in the states, reactivate when back.
Option 4: Buy a BLU Vivo Air Smartphone on Amazon and include whatever SIM I choose in Europe, suspend Verizon and Keep HTC in the states, reactivate when back.
Thoughts or advice from anyone who's been to Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy) with a Verizon HTC One?
Thanks!
I honestly don't know a 100% answer as I've never done that, but since your HTC is unlocked, and removable SIM, couldn't you just suspend Verizon, get a 4g SIM when you're over there, pop it in your M8, and go about your trip then just reactivate VZW when back?
Sounds like that's what you'd be doing anyways if you were to buy an extra phone to do that exact same thing anyways.
Or are you worried about losing/ breaking it over there then having nothing? If that's the case, I would get a cheap used one from somewhere, use that over there and then just leave the M8 there. Just my $.02.
Recently just asked this, Im going to get a cheap sim when I am over there and hope it works.

I'm going to start in Germany (berlin) and hoping to travel around Switzerland, Austria, and Italy...Thinking I'd go with Three's service from the UK for the unlimited data (which doesnt work in Germany, but almost everywhere else) and I'd get a sim for my time in germany or just use wifi.
Also, do I need to do anything special with Verizon for unlocking (other than suspend my line for the time I'm abroad)? I mean do I need to pay them to unlock the sim or anything? I've read that most recent verizon phones are sim unlocked and global ready... Just wondering if i'm missing something...
Curious to hear what you decide on or if you have any other thoughts.

You don't need to do anything with Verizon. The phone is SIM unlocked out of the box. You'd just need to add the correct APN settings.

Received T-Mobile version instead of WiFi Only... Keep it?

Hi All,
I just ordered a Galaxy Note 10.1 from Amazon. I ordered a WiFi only model (SM-P600). I received the SM-P607 (the T-Mobile version). I am an AT&T customer, not T-Mobile. So, the question is, should I keep this or send it back? Can I just run it without a sim card, and are there drawbacks to that (battery life, etc)? Can I easily change it over to AT&T (I have a family plan so I could add it for only 10$/month)? Recommendations????
You could either put it in Airplane Mode then turn on WiFi/BT and everything will run fine, or you could get a cheap T-Mo plan (I think it's eligible for the free 200MB/mo for life). Or you could spend $20 and get it unlocked, then it would work on any GSM LTE carrier.
I have the SM-P607T; all the SM-P605 (non-WiFi-only Snapdragon models) ROMs work on it, and Schischu has an AOSP ROM that works excellently on it, too.
Thought I'd follow up if anyone is interested in this path... Amazon seems to have an issue where they are shipping the t-mobile version of the tablet by mistake when the WiFi is ordered. I decided to ship the first mistake back, but then decided to go with it after they sent me the second one. The Ltd version is more expensive, so I got a deal...
I went with a popular online unlocking service, and within a day had an unlock code. Visited the att store and got a free sim card. Next, called att and went through the process of adding the tablet to my account. Followed the instructions at the link below to setup the network settings for att.
When all is said and done, I am very pleased... Have a full LTE tablet with a digitizer (which is the reason for the note) brand new for less than 450$. If others got this version by mistake as well, keep it and put it on the network of your choice.
