Launchers - HTC Desire S

Does using something like adw or a gingerbread launcher slow down the performance of the phone compared to the stock HTC sense and also is there any point in using them
Sent from my HTC Desire S using Tapatalk

nope, they don't slow down much, but Sense launcher is waaaaaaaaaaaay better than any other launcher IMO, but it's a matter of personal choice.

Sry to say, but go launcher & adw have much more possibilities to modify (groups/folders in appdrawer is just one from a few) and go launcher is also an eyecandy and has like sense his own widget set (including skins) for contacts etc.
But like you said it's a matter of personal choice^^

Hey, it's a Desire S, Launchers can't slow us down!
Seriously, I haven't encountered (yet) slowness using launchers. I am only using Go Launcher EX though.

I am a fan of Go Launcher myself, but recently tried Launcher Pro again... and I must say I was blown away... I have Superkids MIUI installed which runs incredibly smooth and snappy and together with Launcher Pro the best combination I ever had on my DS. IMHO Sense is just a waste of space and resources...

Yeah if you want to use a launcher use an aosp rom. Sense will still be running and will also be killing your battery

It's possible with a goldcard, but with this you only can get temp root, that means you have to root it again after each restart.
If your interested in the procedure, look at the index thread.

Yes. Beautiful Widgets (paid app) has one similar. MIUI's weather/clock widget looks similar if you like the iOS look.
I've achieved the best battery life from MIUI (OC'd to 1.2ghz) with cattleprod's cyan04.7 Kernel running JuiceDefender. It's what I ended up sticking with after trying quite a few.
Personally, I love the look and feel of iOS so the added functionality of Android and much better battery life than stock is everything I could ask for.

I've tried just about every rom out there, and my experience is that there is not dramatic difference among them. The display is always the biggest consumer. Not matter what rom you're using, the display will consume what it's going to consume...

This is funny... I thought I was the only one who didn't like it. I really thought I was going to, but I find it just gets in the way.
I switched to LauncherPro (which I'm really happy with) and I stopped all the HTC related syncing stuff in the accounts setup. I'm not sure how much was saved, but it didn't seem to help much RAM and battery wise.
FWIW my wife hasn't had any complaints about it, and we both came from stock Android phones.
I can't wait to root this thing...
Did Launcher Pro not lag for you guys? I checked out the demo in the store and Launcher Pro chugged like none other. Who knows what they did to that demo before I picked it up though.
I really like LP. I saw a youtube video of the Sens. running it....looked great to me.

I installed Zeam to see if it would be slow. It ran fine. I actually noticed that some aspects of Sense shutdown when you use another launcher.
Try ADW Ex just for the mere fact that is supports hardware acceleration unlike LPP and the other homescreen replacements.

Do you have more than one home app installed?
That will happen when the device gets low on RAM and it has to kill background processes to keep it going. The solution ? Uninstall some of the apps you recently downloaded and don't need AND reduce the amount of unnecessary widgets on the homescreen(s).
I wish this was possible too. No lag here but I hate the stupid 3 button bar wasting space. I tried wave launcher but it looks like crap.

I had a myTouch 4G before the Sensation that was rooted with a stock Android rom and I had all my widgets loooking identical to sense.
Download Beautiful Widgets (it is $1.99 but WAY worth it if you want cool widgets!) There is a clock called "SuperClock" that comes with the app that looks IDENTICAL to sense, especially when you download the (free) skin called "super sense". It also has the sense-looking toggle widgets etc. All with TONS of skins to choose from. The super clock even has the sense animations if you download the free animations add-on.
And just in case (for the non-readers out there) after downloading the app, you apply the widgets like any other (long-press). Opening the app is just for adjusting settings/skins etc.
Guys, is it possible to install Sense 2.x launcher? I wish I could turn off that stupid 3D effect (and scrolling page by page in app drawer)

Sense roms

I know this has probably been asked plenty of times, but I'm bored of cyanogenmod (again) and wanted people's opinions on the best as we seem to be getting a lot of official support now. Which sense rom is your favourite and reasons why please?

+1 to endymion v3 here too!! great sense 3.5 rom, excellent battery life and awesome tweaks!
The only gripe I have is the the sense 3.5 dockbar, I find it ugly and somewhat blown up, especially with the text (applications, personalization)
kept changing between the two-button bliss bar and stock 3.5 bar and couldn't settle on either
hope someone would make a sense 3.0 /2.1 dockbar mod for it!!
Is there a way to sense 3.5 rom has a normal font for the screen of our Desire S? Small fonts is something that annoys me a lot, and see how Rhyme rom only has something like that, but it seems that unfortunately proxuser left development of the Rom :/

What's the best launcher?

I'm currently running the go launcher but seems a little laggy... which is the best
Sent from my HTC ChaCha A810e using xda premium
It's laggy if you have SuperOSR/CM7 because the proc speed is set to 600 Mhz by default on these two ROMs.
What you need to to do is go to Settings ->CyanogenMod Settings -> Peformance -> CPU Settings -> Max CPU frequency: 800 Mhz
That should fix all laggy issues you are seeing.

On the ChaCha, I use ADW because we can fully hide the dock (so there's more place for icons and widgets, it's not the same as when you hide the dock on Launcher Pro or Go Launcher) as I don't like vertical docks.

Spacecaker do you use that one on the chacha?
I have been using ssLauncher for weeks now and it's easily my favorite.
It's atypical, extremely customizable, you can make really beautiful home screens and it works very well with landscape mode. Actually, my home screen scrolls down, so I have lots of widgets and icons and shortcuts that, otherwise, would have to go in a different screen, it's absolutely useful and free.
You can also share your designs, which is a huge plus, as people is starting to do so and there are some fantastic designs out there!
