The AT&T SG2 had CM7 and MiUi roms basically on launch day I've notice roms seem to be coming slow on the skyrocket.
Is this because of the different chipsets, Dev Interest, or something else compared to SG2?
(This isn't me complaining I'm just curious , I also noticed no CM7 roms for T-Mobile SG2)

Just hope more odevs becpme intrested in it. I think once ics is released for.it the dev support will increase. Supposed to be the first at&t device to recieve it

unfortunately, this is the same problem the infuse ran into.... which is why i left...
The SGS2 had it on the international phone, so migrating it was easy. New chip will delay the ROM's on the skyrocket, so be patient

The galaxy s2 lte is the international version of the skyrocket, but the issue is it released at around the same time and is not near as popular as the original gs2.
Our phones are very similar to the tmo GS2, so once they get a cm7 port the skyrocket version shouldn't be far behind.
You should not stick with this phone if you are hoping for a ton of dev support. Frankly, we're lucky to have what we have right now (thanks guys!). This is a one off phone and as such, it's more difficult to port stuff over to it. I consider it highly unlikely that we'll see any Cyanogen or MiUi love on this phone unless portability some how gets easier with ICS.
I'm not huge on installing ROM's just to play with them. I come here more for problem solving on stock + root configs, so this isn't a big deal for me. But I can understand why it's a big turn off to some people.
The ROMS for the Infuse came fairly quickly after the phone was available. Subsequent cooked ROMs then started becoming more stable just about 3-4 months after. Of course, it all depends on the availability of dev support for the SR and hopefully they are coming onboard soon enough.
Then again, if you want *more* than a few ROMs to choose from, then the 'regular' sgs2 may be more up your alley.
I NEED MY STOCK ANDROID BACK... touch wiz is pretty but i went from g1 to n1 to skyrocket and i miss some things
A second line is coming up for upgrade (for the wife) and I have thought about getting/trying out the skyrocket as I have the original att SGS2 and love the rom and dev support. Already testing out the international versions alpha build of ice cream sandwich. But for the wife's phone I don't think I want to mess with it as much though. But it DOES boil down to dev support and roms I guess. Is it really this slow in here? I love my OG SGS2 and even though we will have lte in my area by years end I wont be giving up mine for anything. I got my OG SGS2 two days after launch and at first was excited by the lte version until it was confirmed to have the snapdragon and not the exerynos. So I was glad I stayed.
So my question is has any well known devs jumped into the skyrocket arena yet? The dev section looks kind of lonely right now. I have a month to decide whether to get her a OG SGS2 or the skyrocket so I am in no rush. I saw all the threads and have followed the skyrocket until it was moved out of our sub forum, so I have read all the debates and arguing about the differences between the OG and skyrocket. Haven't been in here for a few weeks now and it looks almost the exact same developer section wise. Other than being rooted have you guys seen any spectacular advancements as we have seen in the OG SGS2? I am NOT in here trolling but just wanted to get all your inputs as well. Are you still glad you went with the skyrocket? Are you glad you didn't just take it back and get a OG SGS2? I know with lte you guys get kick ass download speeds, and in my OG I get 8Mb download and haven't had any issues streaming anything, downloading anything, or visiting any web pages. So is it worth it in your eyes for me to get the skyrocket for the wife? PLEASE only real answers, I am not here for flaming wars or "my device is better because" replies, I am not trying to stir up the emotions I have seen between the two in the past. So again please just your honest and as possible unbiased opinions. Thanks
PS.I posted this here because I run CM7 on my OG SGS2. Not sure if I could give it up though touchwiz on our (both) att SGS's gets the job done. Plus with testing out alpha builds of ICS we are in for a WHOLE change of goodness as long as the ASOP build looks and feels. Unless samsung or att don't ruin it that is.

I would certainly love to see CM7 support for this device. i think it would be tremendous oversight for it to get swept under the table and miss out on CM7.1 + CM9.
I do not see it happening .. i believe it will show up sooner or later.
Patiently holding out on purchasing "ics device." just to "have an ics ROM."
people the phone came out a month ago! i was on the SGSII forum, and we didn't have CM support immediately, it took time patience and DONTATIONS! if no one is donating, please quit crying!! You can always return the device. It is not a good look for those of in the community (irc.irondust.net; #skyrocket) that are either attempting to be a part of the solution. Da_G is looking into a port now. Furthermore, Samsung was sent an email re the release of the source code.
We will see.

Instead of a HUGE thread on how to run a TMO ROM on our devices, we could request support instead on the Cyanogenmod thread for OUR device? Just a thought... not a flame
Any Dev will tell you the facts.. if he knows this device, he knows there are more than enough similarities BTW sgh-i727 and tmo sgs II for cyanogenmod to run a simple port. You guys must've not read up much .. this would be cake for those fellas.

The Skyrocket will be worth it in the long run, I know we might not have much dev support at the moment but eventually when ICS comes to this phone officially it will grow. I'm running this phone stock at the moment and I LOVE it no lag at all, and mostly I'm loving my 55mbps download speeds down here in Texas (;

I forsee great things with this phone in the very near future..

Hello Epic users, Rmjr, Fixter, and I have made the rom flashable but it seems like we are just missing one piece to the puzzle when it is flashing. The rom is on its way and will be here sooner than later. Thank you for all your support.
Here is the change log for V.1 of this rom.
Update-
9/8- Ok the rom is done but the team and i are working on a way to flash it without bricking it. This is a long journey we are on but i promise that when the release comes you will not be disappointed. Also, late last night i found a mode that will give this phone some crazy battery life. Thank you for all your patience, you guys are awesome : )
Update-
9/11- Well guys the rom is done but flashing it is still major problem. I am currently working on a way to flash. Since this phone does not have a custom recovery I am kinda just experimenting with different ways. To all the people who are doubting this rom and are trolling on this thread, go make your own rom... if you can.About the donations I dont care about it, I just thought if you all would like the rom to be better and produce faster turn outs. To all my beta testers, when the first time i get it to flash and it doesnt mess up your phone you guys will get it ASAP. Thanks for all the support through this.
Update-
9/14 - Now that a working recovery has been released I am now working non stop on this whenever i have free time (I have college and work to go around also). Patience is the key here, the people who donated should be getting there beta copy by Saturday night if all goes well. Remember I do not have a Epic so i have to have my team help me flash this so this is a very long process to make sure i dont send out a rom that will brick every phone. I would also like to thank the people who have been commenting on the thread i read each one and listen to all of you. Thanks for all your support.
V.1
Removed bloatware (The Sprint crap)
Removed Touchwiz

Added Astro file manager

Wireless tether
Enabled Laptop mode (Crazy battery saver)
More to come in V.2

I will upload a file that as all the apks that i removed for those you like those apps can still install them using Astro.

well we have the whole galaxy s team behind us though, so i think it should even out after the fascinate comes out and more galazy s phones are sold
This phone is the first one to match or exceed all my requirements for me to spend $500 on a phone again. It's gotta have 1+GHz, good GPU with sufficient drivers, 512MB+ RAM, SDHC (XC wouldn't hurt), 480 x 800 or better, smaller than 4.3", a hard keyboard, and a headphone jack. I've had 4 $500 HTC devices (no contract ftw) without a headphone jack and it's about damn time.

It's a combination of the processor and the keyboard that pushed me towards the Galaxy S. For the most part, I prefer the Evo's look and feel, but I hate onscreen controls with emulators. The S Pro has both power and controls. Look at how silky smooth this video is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl5PBXZXuSA

Not to mention this phone is a world phone with it being launched in 110 carriers world wide. Its perhaps the largest distribution of a smartphone in any market, larger than Apple's iPhone.
Just think of all those developers jumping on the bandwagon be it CDMA or GSM.
A 7" and 10" tablet will be spun off the Galaxy S line up. Can you just IMAGINE?!
This is a monumental push by Samsung to overtake Nokia and Apple to be #1 in the smartphone market.

i second that, plus I'm assuming it will have wimax to?
I work at radioshack and our sprint rep just came by with an epic and man it is nice. Feels great in hand and the spring action of the keyboard is really strong and isn't flimsy at all. I compared it with my evo as quickly as I could like running the network speed test, which the epic won in for tests in the same area. Also noticed there was a new update sprint was pushing out. hopefully its touchwiz 3.0 but doubt it. The phones auto brightness wasn't working too well, the brightness level seems to dimmed down all the way after I turn the screen off and I had to manually turn it back on high through settings. Besides that, everything else was buttery smooth and I can't wait toll I have my own epic.

Just curious if anyone remembers the N1's dev community at this stage. Was it about the same as the NS is now? It seems a little slow, but I completely understand the thing just came out - just didn't know relatively speaking how fast or slow it's coming along.
It's a very important factor in my buying/keeping a phone.
It's actually moving quite fast considering the phone hasn't even been out a month yet. Morfic from Team Whiskey already provided us with a fully funtional 1.3 OC kernel. It took months to get a semi-stable one for the Vibrant.
Cool. I've never bought a phone this early in its cycle, so I was unsure. I left the EVO which had ROMs etc. out the wazoo. I expected there not to be a whole lot available so early, just didn't know if relatively what's available is a lot or a little.
While the quantity of roms may not be as vast as of yet I can assure you the quality is there. You will not regret making this purchase and I'm sure given a little more time the NS will shock us all with it's hidden time machine app that we haven't unlocked yet.
i'd not comment on quality so early.
Like common... it's been only 3 WEEKS since the release date.
I think we are doing pretty darn good already, way ahead of expectations.
in contrast the SGS I9000 took like 2 to 3 months to pick up speeed in the DEV world
now after 4 months they finally have quality ROMS compared to 2 months back

I think the similarity and comparisons to the SGS line are what worry me a bit. It's usually HTC that gets all the dev love, and the SGS series (IMO) had some pretty lacking dev support.
I pray that the NS continues to get more support than the SGS.

I disagree about the "SGS series...had some pretty lacking dev support."
You've got to be more specific about which SGS. The i9000 crowd is very active with lots of custom roms, tweaks, kernels, recoveries, etc. The T-Mo Vibrant doesn't have nearly as much, but there's still a few options (TW, Eugene and a few others). The Captivate I know has some custom kernels, but the Fascinate seems to have almost nothing. Lack of dev support kept me from getting a Fascinate, despite desperately wanting to switch to Verizon for service.
Maybe Cyanogen and crew never gave any of these real love, but it's a disservice to some really great devs like Paul O'Brien (Modaco), DocRambone, SuperCurio, Morfic, etc to say that the entire SGS line didn't get support.
Supercurio and Paul O'Brien changed the i9000 from the best hadware on the market with the worst OS/FS to the best of both.
I just did some calculations:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10377107&postcount=566
It sums up to some 268000 units. In 3 weeks. Just in US of A and UK.
Either I grossly miscalculated somewhere or it is just "wow".

LOL @ Everyone asking about dev support.
The phone hasn't even been out a month yet! On the Nexus One, the developer community wasn't anything but maybe one or two ROMs that were optimized Eclair plus CM5 and then a handful of kernels all doing essentially the same thing.
We also need to consider the fact that when the Nexus One launched, there was nothing like it on the market at that time. Not the case with the Nexus S. This time around, there are a lot of great phones to choose from.
I hope folks realize that one of the reasons we aren't seeing a lot of action on the development front is because everything pre-Gingerbread is considered a downgrade. Once Samsung, HTC, or Motorola update their devices to 2.3, then we'll start seeing more ROMs. Ohwaitnvm on Samsung.

Think I saw a tweet from @cyanogen mentioning that if it is supported by Google then it will be supported by #teamdouche
I had a Nexus One from launch till 4 months ago and the developer support made me fall in love with Android.
I decided to test out WP7 with the hopes that it would develop into something great; however, I am immensely unsatisfied with the rate of development on this platform.
I would like to come back to Android and this phone is very appealing to my needs.
My question: Will the developer community heavily support this phone like they did with the Nexus One?
My 2 favorite things on Android were Cyanogenmod and Kang-o-rama. I would be incredibly happy if these items were available on this phone.
I'm sure this phone will have PLENTY of dev support. I know that cyanogen himself and a few others from teamdouche are getting the g2x also

This device will recieve a lot of support because it doesn't have a locked bootloader like the Sensation(not 100% on this yet till the time comes) which is coming out later this year. Plus it's a dual core phone...
Yea it seems lots of devs already said the G2x was their next phone. We already have root, but they are still working on getting the recovery working. Not that I have any lack of faith either, cause the phone just has a different partition table compared to the O2x (which they didn't expect).
I would say that once we get the recovery, roms will start pouring in.
For me Dev support is the deciding factor between the g2x , sgs2, and sensation.
From how it sounds, the g2x seems to have the lead in Dev interest. Are there any rumors of a new nexus which could steal the Dev spotlight?

It seems Samsung has learned the error of their ways with the whole Froyo debacle, they seem to be keeping their promish in reguards to the time frame for updates and such in the future, so the sgs2 might also be a good choice....
Samsung has burned it's bridge with me, I don't intend to go back in the near future unless the jump through a couple hoops...

I for one am coming to the g2x from my Nexus One for a combination of features (dual core, build quality, etc.) + developer support.
I've been following quite a few threads, etc to try to gauge developer support & it seems like the g2x will have *plenty* of it. I'd probably still be on the fence a bit if it wasn't for this.
As mentioned, I believe Cyanogen is getting a g2x & development has already begun on CM7. Paul Obrien & dj (kang-o-rama) both have Optimus 2X's so we'll hopefully be able to use/leverage their great work for the g2x.
If you had the G1 back in the day (like it was sooo long ago) , I think this is going to take us back close to those days. There will be a lot of support.
Just the fact that it will get CM7 means there well be lots of spin-offs and themes. Then there will be the TW team, Eugene and Barrak, and others and of course P. O'brien and the devs working on the O2.
Definitely if you're a dev on tmo you're gonna get this phone.

For me, it was the Tegra 2 with Nvidia backing. Samsung and HTC make phones, not games. I can see Nvidia pushing lots of devs over to optimizing games for the chipset.
And I don't know about the Super Amoled Plus but that weird blue hue has put me off of the later screens.
Plus Tegra 2 is noticeably faster then the new Orion in the SGS2 in 3D games.
While the Sensation is a pretty phone, I didn't see anything that peaked my interest.
I hope this question doesn't come across as unappreciative, but I am wondering if there are any patterns when it comes to purchasing a phone with consistent dev support from both the manufacturer and the android community. Do certain brands get released source more quickly than others, or is it luck of the draw? Same goes for dev support. Are there trends in the phones that get the most attention while others are left as an afterthought due to a PITA development process or general disinterest? I am satisfied with my Charge, but I want to know if I can choose more intelligently in future purchases. It seems like the phones with the best hardware are not necessarily the ones with the most support. Any thoughts?

No. It's just that we've jumped ship on XDA. We're fed up with the noobs and general insolence. Devs are still around if you know where to look.
As to what phone will get the most devs, it's gotta be the Galaxy Nexus.

I've checked on other forums and the only thing I've found that isn't here is the infinity ROM which is an example of the Charge being an afterthought and not really the primary focus of a dev team. I didn't know if maybe one brand is more simple to develop.

Howso? Imnuts is extremely active in the Charge community, and Infinity is, in my opinion, the most well developed and mature ROM on this phone. I don't like the occasional hot boots that TSM Parts brings, but no dev has been more committed to this community, nor put in more time on this phone, than imnuts.

so I'm not one to bicker but here I go...i haven't seen any statement from any devs on xda or the other site stating we've given up on the charge. Yes there are cooler phones but the charge is still one hot phone I've held the rest and honestly minus the hardware specs this is the hottest phone I've seen. I'm also 260 with brick hands so I like the size. Fact is samsung sucks with support so there is no source since froyo for the devs to play with and here we are on ice cream sandwich..blame.samsung not the devs. Danalo has said flat out hes working..and that is enough for me to back him up and support his work imnuts is still around..plus the other players still hard at work. As for stock support if thats what you meant.good luck there dropping phones every minute at this point so when you get that phone that guarantees support and updates a few weeks later your sol and will be depending on devs and leaks to help you out. I for one will stick with the charge until the apps being made demand more power as of right now I can't see a 5 mb app needing a dual core proc or a quadrant score of 3000..sorry I ramble..lets hope one of these devs loves the phone the way I do and keeps cracking at it for some time to come..and if samsung dissent come through in the next year if ill get my 300 dollars worth when I toss my beloved charge through a 300 pain of glass at samsung central!

I don't know how this got turned around to be viewed as an attack on the remaining charge devs, but I'll assume it's because the general atmosphere around here is one of ignoring the original question and just gleaning a topic to start a debate about. From what you said, apparently Samsung sucks at supporting their phones, which leaves the original question unanswered of "what brand has the best support". Also, yes, the Charge has a few devs. I appreciate their work so I'm not sure why this is the subject every reply argues.

Generally HTC and Motorola have the best community support, Samsung has always been worse off than them.
And I'm sure that this got turned into an "attack" on the remaining devs because there seems are always people that think they are entitled to something. Doesn't matter what community or what this something may be, there are always people that think something is owed to them. One should always make purchases based on what something can do and not what it could do.

Also, since I never answered the original poster, you can best pick a phone that will get support by looking at what phones are currently well supported. There is a reason that those phones are supported, and generally future phones by that company are equally supported. Generally

HTC has by far the best record updating their phones, followed by Motorola, then Samsung, then LG. I'd guess we'll see a shift to faster updates eventually at Motorola due to their acquisition by Google, but that could take a while.
As far as dev support goes... you really can't predict that. The level of development on this phone is indeed very low, and that's not an attack on the developers -- it's just fact. Many phones have 3, 4, 5+ actively developed ROMs.
I'd say there's one easy prediction, though: that the Galaxy Nexus will get a lot of developer focus. Just look at how active development is for the almost two year old Nexus One. That's obviously in part due to the fact that Nexus handsets will always get the fastest official updates.

IMHO, if you care to browse (much less post) on a forum any manufacturer updates or support are about as useful as a bicycle is to a fish. As for predicting what the support for one phone model over the other by people who work on their own time, it's about like guessing what the next big stock will be. Sure there's info, but it's really a guess. As said, Nexus looks hottest right now, but who really knows what comes out at CES and jazzes up devs?
I wound up going Charge over Bionic for screen and the way it felt I was a Moto fanboy, but I went with my gut, and I'm happy.
Even stuck with manufacturer support, chances are you'll have a useable year and a half out of any phone if you try out apps in store and are pleased. Might another wind up being better? Sure. Thing is, strike outs and striking gold are both rare. Just actually TRY the phones out and get what YOU like.

This is a thread to express your anger at AT&T for not updating phones on a timely basis... They are stalling so they don't have to put their Developers to work and update phones, yet the *PRIZED* possession of AT&T, the Iphone (I$hit) and let apple update them on their own and don't fill them with bloatware.... I absolutely hate that they treat phones like that....
Modz please don't close, this is meant to be a venting thread!

Just flash CyanogenMod, it's infinitely better than that bloatware infused crap anyway
Agreed, I just root and flash and don't worry about att. Most average users don't even know what a update is nor do they care.

I run MIUI so no worries there, just once source is released, bugs will be fixed!

This thread is unnecessary. If you are on xda, chances are you are looking to make your phone better. If not, you probably don't care. Why is this thread different from others complaining about a carrier? And if you are on Miui why complain? Even with source there will be bugs needing fixed.
Glitch kernel let me OC to 1.4!
There will be less bugs than there are already!
Sent from my I897 using xda premium
Less yes, but still bugs. All I am saying is creating a thread to vent on a forum that is designed to change how your phone works is pointless. Go back to stock on your phone because the bugs will not be as plentiful.

Usually I wouldn't worry about this thread and move on, but I agree with the OP about the iPhone.
When AT&T got possession of the most powerful phone in the world (SGS II, for those that don't know) there wasn't one single advertisement saying that it was coming out or that they was selling it. When the iPhone had TWO WEEKS to release there was a big *** advertisement on their homepage for preorders. On top of that, when you look at their smartphones the iPhone lineup from the best to the worst that they are selling are all of the first phones listed, where's the SGS II? DEAD LAST!!!

I don't blame AT&T that much, why wouldn't they push a single phone that millions want vs. pushing all of the android phones they have, in the past two months we have seen the galaxy s II, the Atrix II, the SkyRocket and the Vivid released. Before that it as the Atrix, Infuse, and Inspire, all the while Apple has released 1 phone. From a marketing perspective its much cheaper to push 1 phone vs. the 7 I just mentioned and the other 4 smaller releases they have had for android. On top of that they are also selling Windows 7 and blackberry phones. To sum it up its makes sense and is cheaper for them the market the hell out the most popular phone in America then to have to create new campaigns every month for the next flagship phone that gets released for Android. I think that extends to updates as well, I would bet if there were one android manufacturer like Apple for Iphone we would see much quicker updates, its just sort the headache you sign up for when you buy an android phone, if you want quick updates get a google phone, otherwise all you can do is flash.

Dude, the captivate is a 1 year old model, unless they start melting down in peoples hands, dont expect another update for your phone. I can just about promise ICS will never come for cappy from AT&T. Be glad we did finally get GB.

I've come to expect very little from AT&T. Just a bit more than the bare minimum (i.e. a phone that can call people).
also if you want to express any opinion to At&t, contact At&t. dont expect that they research their old products as well enough to find this message to them.
email, call - i think they have these options if not default to angry letter attached to a box with an old style wind up clock in it.

I was largely under the presumption that, as AT&T customers, we've done this so often that we're sick of it and absolutely can't stand another 3hr+ chat just to get them to send us a replacement phone.

Many people haven't needed replacement phones because of the os not getting updated. I don't think that has ever happened.

I was specifically referencing the idea of calling AT&T, not discussing the issue of replacement phones.
ok then dont call them. make a blog, or yell at the wall, it will do you the same amount of good as posting here.
Stupid question but how is Sprint & Verizon when it comes to updates? I have read they also do the same, MetroPCS are still selling Eclair phones I believe.

It is pretty much all the us providers that slow down getting the updates. Some manufacturers were sending out pretty frequent updates for their phones but usually it was because they would send out an update like 2.2 which would have some bugs, then a month later they would supposedly fix those bugs with an update that incremented to 2.2.1, 2.2.3 or whatever (I do not remember the exact updates but some of my coworkers with their HTC or Moto phones seemed to get the little incremented updates pretty often, but going from lets say 2.2 to 2.3 took a while.
This is ONE of the advanteges to 1. having a sister device in common like the i9000 and i897 cappy and as well the i9100 and i777. Which WILL allow us on Cappys and ATT OG SGS2's to stay ahead of whatever it is the provider puts out. Like on my cappy I was running froyo maybe 6 months before att decided to put out a official update, then just as att put out the official froyo I was running leaked gingerbread roms which STILL has not been made official from att.
AND 2. being a part of the XDA community so we can get these BETTER THAN STOCK ROM leaks well before.
