Captivate

AT&T announced the release date of Samsung Captivate. I am trying to decide if I should return my Aria and get the Captivate. Anyone here has comment on that?
Given that Aria is now rootable, side-load apps possible and I know I can install non-AT&T approved apps from the Marketplace. I would like to know the chance of getting this capabilities on the Captivate.

You should be able to sideload apps using the backflip method if nothing else. Partially I plan on sticking with the aria though, I have had problems with Samsung in the past plus their support has a habit of not being up to par.

I'm in the same boat. Got my Aria on Friday as I was sick of waiting on the lack of news from AT&T on the Captivate. Might have to do the 30 day swap. The Galaxy S was already rooted so it seems logical that this has too.

I'm in the same boat. Got my upgrade coming soon and I need some more info on the rooting and side-loading of the Captivate.

While my Aria is still within the return policy when the Captivate comes out, I plan to keep my Aria. I enjoy having a small device that can actually fit in my pocket and can last a whole day on a charge. Plus the Aria is much more attractive in the aesthetics department in both looks and interface.

The Aria is a lot more attractive with a large, already established ROM/rooting community but the Captivate has a faster processor (doesn't always mean faster performance) and a larger/nicer screen. Its a real toss up for me.

Toss up for me, too, but leaning towards the Captivate. I played with the Aria at my local AT&T store and was impressed - until I compared a Web site on the Aria to the iPhone (no, I have no interest in the iPhone!!!) and the iPhone screen was significantly brighter - even after increasing the Aria's brightness to the max. Plus, a compact phone is good in some ways but lacking in others. And with 4 major carriers getting the Samsung Galaxy S variants, there will be no lack of forum interest / activity.

I think it's all going to come down to a side-by-side comparison in the store between the Aria and Captivate when I decide to upgrade at the end of the month.
I love the HTC Sense UI but I'm not totally hating the UI on the Captivate. And the pre-installation of Swype is definitely a plus for the Captivate....even though there are now multiple side-loading techniques out there for the Aria.
I hate it when it's time to decide on a phone...such a headache trying to make sure I get the best phone for me....

Surely you jest?
The Hummingbird processor is simply superior to any other mobile processor available right now, especially due to the graphics chip it's coupled with.
The Aria has a significantly lower clocked Qualcomm processor, which almost automatically eliminates the ability/potential for upcoming-gen mobile games.
I can respect the preference for a slightly smaller screen, but I find it very, very difficult to justify the Aria over the Galaxy S due to its Super AMOLED screen, which is (like the Hummingbird regarding procs) superior to all others available.
If AT&T decides to lock up the Captivate, I'll just buy a true, unlocked Samsung Galaxy S i9000.
Of course, if AT&T were to lock it up, my last act of defiance might instead be to forget it all and switch to Sprint for the Epic 4G (its flavor of the SGS).

I don't know if anyone is able to tell right now but I'm pretty new to this thing right now but do you know how long it might take to get a root/side-load procedure for the Captivate? That might seal the deal for me if there's enough rooters/side-loaders/custom ROM makers for the Captivate upon me getting it...

The Galaxy S has been rooted a long time ago. I'd imagine the same rooting procedure applies to the Captivate. Also, AT&T's dumbass no-sideloading lock is stupid easy to get around and works the same way regardless of the phone you have. You can either just download whatever program you want to install and issue an 'adb install <filename>' command with your android sdk tools, or you can modify your settings.db file and reboot your phone as per the instructions here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=708408

Oh Okay then. I'm new to the whole rooting/hacking Android thing so I didn't know that the same Galaxy S rooting procedure would work (I knew that the Captivate was in the Galaxy S family but...ehh, I dont know what was going through my mind).
And I also did not know that the same sideloading hack worked on all Android phones.

I have my Aria showing up tomorrow in the mail and was also thinking about the fact that this phone might be around the corner when I ordered it. For me I think the Aria is gonna be fine for me. I could use saving the money now and I found with my iphone that I don't really like to play anything other than simple games on the phone so I think the CPU power won't deter me that much. Also I'm not into recording videos so I won't be missing out on the 720p much.
I guess as far as it goes for me I just want to get away from my iphone3g.

Quite honestly, I'd love a straight vanilla android ROM.
I hate custom UIs- Sense, TouchWiz, whatever. I hate them all.
That being said, do you guys think it'd be too much to ask to get that on there?
Might Samsung even be magnanimous enough to allow you to turn off their TouchWiz UI?

Would be pretty great to get some flexability with the UI.

I didn't think about the future gaming capability of the Captivate. Adding the 720 video, I think I'm gonna get the Captivate and return my Aria. While I love the small size of the Aria, I would love to have a bigger screen. I just hope the battery on the Captivate will last longer than my Aria.

The battery is one of my main concerns too. I really hope it lasts a decent amount of time.

Thought you guys (and gals) might be interested in an excerpt from a CNN interview online today with the inventor of the cell phone, Martin Cooper. I'm not a "big boy" yet so I'm not permitted to include the link. Feel free to post in other forums if appropriate.

Hmmm...very interesting indeed

I am waiting to see the Captivate at my local store and see if they will let me take it on an Antenna tour.. I have had major issues with other Samsung phones in my area. Iphone, HTC, and Motorola seem to be the only phones that have a strong enough antenna.

Does anyone else think that MT4G should of been tha natural succesor of the N1?

...or is it just me?

It would have been a better fit. The only thing missing is NFC and this phone would've really shined with some vanilla flavor.

Yeah, plus the battery life with the N1 and this, have no difference so yeah.
This is one of the top high end Android phone in the US right now and I'm feeling good about it.

Monday morning,after a busy weekend with your loved ones,cuz of the holydays,you weak up to the sound of your beautifull,new,latest most fullfing android device on the market (my opinion at least, don't even make me start about NS,huuuumunnnnguusss disspointment). Your beloved phone,wich at times could be compared with a second or third girlfriend cuz of the amount of time an android/android based device fanatic actually spends on it,and maintains it, not only by himself,but by an unbelivebly well structured comunity...
Ok,moving on to the point of this scenario,so your MT4G is waking u up,cuz you gotta go to work,right?
Wouldn't it be nice if the first thing u see would be the MT4G in an apple like dock (just gotta admit they make beautifull designs for theyr devices), in a dock like mode in wich you have all the important info u need to start the day,like time,day,temperature,latest news and various updates, and THAN a MENU that gives u,from your bed ,barrely waking up, acces to the most imprtant ,if not all the devices in your home,through whatever wirelles way possible, alowing u to,bassically,customize your day,the same way you know you love to customize your phone...
Now thats where I hope GOOGLE and ANDROID are going, and at the same time beeing opened source and not invade ones privacy ...sorry google,only love for you,but had to say that!

Nope, I completely agree with you and have thought this since day 1. HTC had the g1 and n1 so I was curious why Samsung got the ns.

Would have been nice if HTC would have thrown a SAMOLED2 in the phone, but as someone that moved from a N1 to the MT4G, this phone has been a great successor.
As for the NFC, it would have been nice, but to be honest, I don't see it taking off in the very near future in the US. And by the time it does, we'll probably have a very good replacement from T-Mobile.

LOL, I found the first paragraph very ammusing, haha..
I think the reason it wasn't is because TMO wanted to market this phone as theirs because of the video chat capability... and they wanted the consumers to associate a good phone with their name, where as the N1 was googles baby, and while you could look at it and say it was an amazing phone, you didni't really give anymore credibililty to TMO. This way, tmobile looks good to consumers. Looking at things now.... the nexus S blows, but I don't really blame TMO for that, I can blame google or Samsuck for really dropping the ball there...so smart move on TMO part, IMO

Little known fact. The MyTouch3G was going to be known as the Google Ion, and was going to be the precursor to the Nexus Line.
I think the MyTouchHD would of been a perfect phone for the second generation Nexus Line. How ever, they did just over clock the phone to 1.2Ghrz and the quadrant scores look AMAZING.
I think they undercooked this phone. It's so close to being perfect but Samsung doesn't know the difference between sh!t and Shinola

The Mytouch 3G was used heavy as a dev device before the N1 came out. HTC has always been the device not by choice but for not having something else avail. The N1 was basically a revamped version of the Touch and Other Ideas that were on the Drawing Table.
The Nexus S by Samsung is by far hands down the best addition to the Nexus Line. I am also very glad that this is number two in the Line and no other garbage took its place.
Always Remember: The Nexus Line is Google's way of being open with their dev devices, hence "Pure Google". All other devices are literally bastard children that carry a logo that says "with Google" to represent their honorary build.

well it's a part of the original "mytouch" line phones ... it's a mt4g not a nexus touch4g. just saying, cause this phone is a successor of the mytouch3g. like how the g2 is for the g1. when the htc hero came out they were calling it a g2, but it wasn't the successor. plus this kills the nexus in so many ways! mytouch has so much custom UI put into it, talking about the slide & this, whereas nexus is just all straight android vanilla without all the bloatware. look at the nexus s, that's pretty much the successor since I heard they won't come out with a nexus 2. but all this is just IMO

No it wasn't. The Google Ion was the developer version of the HTC Magic which came out at least a year before the N1. Never seen any reference to ION being relaunched at the MT3G.

The magic and the mytouch are the same phone. The magic shipped with 288mb ram, the mytouch, until February 2010, shipped with 192mb. Aside from the color, I believe there is no difference between the ion and the magic. Its just that the ion was never on sale to the public, unless I'm mistaken.

There are two different MyTouch3G phones. The PV32A and the PV32B, The "A" variant is a Google Issued phone. That is the dev phone.

I got the MT4G on release date and I'm still in awe at how well built, and feature packed this device is. If they released this with AOSP and called it the Nexus Two no one would be disappointed. I can't believe that T-Mobile of all carriers released such a high end, future proofed device. Most devices are lacking in some area, but the MT4G isn't lacking at all. It has everything and more. I love this device so much, it's the first android handset I've owned where I haven't had any complaints with it.
There must be some political issues behind Google going to Samsung for the Nexus S and not HTC. HTC makes such better devices. You have the G2 and Desire HD which are industrial business looking devices, then you have the MT4G with a completely different design than anything else on the market and it appeals to almost all demographics. Whether you're a first time smartphone buyer or a seasoned Android veteran you will appreciate this device for what it can offer to you. I'm the latter and I have my MT4G hooked up with Gingerbread (complete with the NS screen off animation) and overclocked to 1.8Ghz. What more can you ask for?
The release of the Nexus S really changed my mind about Google and how they view the Nexus family. I don't think Google gives a **** about the average consumer so they don't include things like HD Video Recording, a Notification Light, FFC, Micro SD Card Slot for people with tons of music and videos etc. Instead they give you the bare bones and honestly, the only reassuring factor for the price is the idea of getting tons of Google updates first. That's all fine and dandy if the phone is priced right. $580 is simply too much for a smartphone that lacks so many features regardless of how you want to argue about it.
Right now the MT4G is the top android device on the market. Even when the first dual core devices come out I will still stick with my MT4G until something comes along that is the successor to it. The next smartphone that I make my daily driver will have to surpass the MT4G in every area; hardware, camera/video quality, screen, design etc.
I've been 100% happy with my purchase since day 1. This is the first time I can say this about any android device I've owned.

The rest of what you said made as much sense.
What would have helped is if you said "No, it wouldn't be the natural successor..." or "Yes, it would have been..." to start out with.
I sure would have preferred the MyTouch 4G as the new Google phone. It has all the extra pieces many phones don't have that a dev might want to test such as a FFC and 4G. Superior to the Nexus S, it has a memory card slot and working GPS (I assume the GPS on the Nexus S is as good as on any (other?) i9000 series phone).
The beautiful (and tough) screen on the Nexus S might be nice, but it doesn't much matter to a developer testing something, n'cest pas?

Case and point for what its worth... I wanted the NS so bad when I heard about it (I had the G1> MyTouch Fender> then finally MT4G. I'm sorry but that NS is a pain in the **** to get when I can just drop by TMobile and pick this one up. F best buy for cell phones I like t mobile stores I pay them I go to them. Plus this phone runs tits rooted and oc'd @ 1.6-1.7 with no crashes at all ... I've had one crash @ 1.8 big woop. And I know for a fact I haven't been able to get this phone to stutter at all it does everything flawless and fast bottom line.

The "A" variant is the HTC magic, released in the UK and in Canada with Rogers. For some reason t-mobile decided to go with the "B" for North America at launch. All Mytouch 3G phones built after February 2010 are A as well. Main difference is the amount of available ram.

I know lots of Russians, lots of Jews, and several Russian Jews. I'm Jewish and 2/4 (both parents were 1/2) Russian myself.
I just wish everyone could speak English at a respectable high school level so I don't cringe when I read some of the posts around here. English as a second language has a free pass though; learning a second language is HARD.
Back on topic - I totally agree that it must have been political. HTC seems to be the Android leader so Samsung getting the NS came out of left field in my eyes. Not to mention the hardware being blatantly inferior to the MT4G, ie; HSPA+, additional RAM, SD slot. I still don't get that.
Also never understood why the US got the inferior 32B. The entire reason I rooted that thing in the first place was so I could overclock it to try and run Navi and Pandora at the same time. I should have bought a N1 in the first place.

[Q] To keep the Sidekick 4G or not keep the 4G, that is the question.

Steep learning curve for myself, and nearly no devs. The phone also seems to crash all by itself at least once a day.
I love my sidekick to death, but will she see support? At first I only bought it because it said sidekick and had the flippy screen. I was a happy camper, but then I learned that it was a ****ING LINUX PHONE *****. Given the investment, I'd like to have the return of cracking wireless network while wardriving, and listening to flacs that I'm torrenting off of a cloned SIM card in a third world country in a stolen Lincoln Continental. (gets a little OT towards the end, but you get my point.) Otherwise I'd just return the phone and duck tape my old SK Slide together and keep using that.
So, now that you see my intentions. Should I devote the time and love of writing regular expressions that make other programmers see blood, or leave the ship before she sinks?

To be honest I don't see it likely that many devs will be jumping on board for this phone. Theres many posts where they say the phone is meant for teenage girls, and teenage girls can't code . Well if you like the phone keep it. Custom roms aren't really that amazing... most of them only have minor tweaks and custom themes. The kernels are nice if you want to overclock or undervolt though and voodoo color/sound is nice. Overall if you like the phone, the flip screen and all keep it, Having it rooted gives you most of the benefits already... theres bound to be SOME development but i'm guessing it will be a VERY long time before you see cyanogen or miui released

If I were you I would exchange it for a g2,mytouch 4g,g2x....or wait for galxys s 2 instead..

Yeah but none of those have the QWERTY keyboard, which was my main motivator for the sidekick. I really miss the form factor the sidekick Slide. It was tiny but effective. All these newfangled smartphones are the size of boomerangs.
I'm not really going to complain as much anymore because I just figured out how to turn off 4G and having to charge my phone almost twice a day was my main complaint. Besides the random crashes, but my friend's phone (the evo 4g) does the same thing so it's not like I would be upgrading if I got another phone.
So I guess my only REAL complaint now is the speed, and not having a flash for the camera.

The G2 has a kb but not the lg g2x..All android phones don't have the shutdown isse, its probably linked to the software.my mytouch slide doesn't do hat at all or even my g1 when I had it. Anyway its your choice, but be careful since you keep this for 2yrs if you have a contract..Just try the phones at th tmo store if you can, the larger screens are easy to type on, the ipone has abt the same screen size and it can be used fine
Oh yeah I forgot to mention ol sammy is terrible with making updates so ginger won't be coming to a phone near for a long long time...Just ask some of the other galaxy s owners and they'll tell you. That's why I want nothing to do with sammy, they dnt give good support lik htc.

No. I paid upfront for the phone. I have a 14 day period to return it.
I just don't want a massive tablet in my pocket. I rock skinny jeans all day err'y day and having some brick in my pocket is terrible for the females looking at my legs.
I was thinking of the Blackberry Bold but closed source is a major boner killer. Same with IOS, but I am familiar with every phone operating system so its no biggie.
I know the Droid Pro has a nice keyboard, especially the one that slides, like the Droid OG, but it looks like a pain to type on, with all the letters smushed together.

I too am going back and forthcoming from a epic 4g the speeds I get on tmobile are stabl and way better than sprints 4g, minor sacrafices like no flash screen quality and size etc but I love the keyboard, text change, the reject list, wifi calling, form factor, etc and while its nice to have a decent cam phone with flash I will miss my epic 4g screen and flash its bittersweet. The keyboard is remarkable and I don't want to lose my reject list I think its a tmobil thing...however why do they charge 14.99 to tether the same data give to us? I don't get it!

Care to point out where I mentioned not wanting development for the sk4g? I just said that it doesn't look like many devs are buying this phone and not to expect something like CM7 or MIUI any time soon.

I said the kernels are nice with voodoo color and sound and overclock/undervolt abilities and such are nice and the improved battery life from them.
and custom roms basically are just:
all bugfixes/tweaks known to date
themed to the devs liking or just stock theme (including custom lockscreen port and power options)
custom kernel (the main benefit in my opinion)
bloatware removed (which you can do with root)
some useful apps added(if the dev chooses)
but it wont take a phone you hate and turn it into an amazing phone.
What i'm getting at is if you like the phone you'll like it with custom roms because they look nice and have added goodies.. if you don't like the phone a rom isn't going to make it much better.

I see lots of people b*tching that this is a "teen phone" and the like.
It's the PERFECT form for those of use who want to use the phone as a mobile terminal. It's the one thing I miss the MOST about my old G1 when I upgraded to the Galaxy S. Sure the Galaxy S is a superior phone to the G1, but the physical keyboard gave me 2x the screen size and didn't have goofy input methods to get to various punctuations (' / \ | {} [] () etc) made it an excellent device to have on hand when I needed to address a server issue *RIGHT NOW*.
G2? Sorry, the keyboard on it sucks. This is the first real successor to the G1 that's an actual upgrade device (MT Slide doesn't really count, same processor constraint as the G1) and I would hope that some developers would show it some love. I'd have preferred if Samsung had given it the same screen as the Galaxy S, but they need to have *something* to upgrade if they plan on making a Mk2 device.

It's been forever since I've upgraded and I just spent quite a bit of time with a number of phones, most of em 4G Android as that was the minimum i was looking for. I hope this summary helps your decisions.
I found that if you're in the market for a fast (1-1.2ghz, dual core), big (4"+) and beautiful (Super AMOLED) touch screen Android phone, there's many choices. Optimus/G2x, Incredible 2, Nexus S, Galaxy S I/II, etc.
There are also a good number of powerful slide-keyboard phones, such as the Evo Shift 4G, Epic 4G, G2, and Droid 2 Global. I noticed that the physical keyboard phones tended to trail the touch screens a bit in overall technology.
Raxxon said the G2 keyboard "sucks". I beg to differ - the HTC keyboards, which are all very similar, are probably the second-best keyboards I've ever used. 4 rows of full-sized and most importantly staggered keys. Not to mention, extra assignable shortcut keys.
But what if you were looking for something that makes using SSH, IRC, chat, email, and other messaging a breeze? There is only one phone with 5 rows of nicely spaced, tactile, staggered keys. The Sidekick 4G.
I was very annoyed that the designers felt that the voice-command and smiley-face buttons were more important than the right-side Alt key. But this can be remedied with a custom key mapper.
Yes, it's unfortunate that the screen looks so mediocre compared to the ones on other flagship models. I do miss the D-pad, but I think touchscreen navigation compensates for the crappy scroll "circle".
I admit I get phone-envy when I see the beautiful screens on those 4.5" dual core touch screen models. But nothing was as easy to email, chat, and type on as the Sidekick. I'll be buying one as soon as they get it in stock around here.

I'm about to get my new phone. And was dead set on getting the HTC One X. But as time's gone on, I'm left more and more unsure of the decision. Between the lack of ROM support which is really just a derivative of HTC's failure to foster/support the open source community in the same way that Samsung has. i.e. SGS3 already having CM9 support. On top of that, now there are things like dropped signals and what-not. I'm wondering whether or not the HOX is really going to be a sound 18 month investment that'll keep me fairly in check with the latest hardware and software developments?

Samsung isn't an option for me. It's just a brand I've never had an affinity to. Having CM9 working and having official CM support are hugely different things. Not to mention that the hardware in HTCs will never be fully supported die to the use of proprietary drivers.

Think of the One X as the modern HD2 phone with the support we are getting and not even been 3 months since the phone has been released and look what we have already

seriously whats up with all this proprietary talk i don't get it
we have tons of kernel devs doing wonders like Goku said and its just been three month
we just had a completely working linux 3.4 kernel written from scratch by devs and even wifi drivers are being written for scratch
lack of ROM support are you kidding me
we had a fully working CM9 in just one month from release you really think CM9 official will not come? official CM will always favor devices close to the nexus line in terms of release date

In a word, yes get the hox, I played with an siii today, screen is so dull, touch wiz is awful and from all accounts camera is better on the hox. Don't bother with roms myself as I find the hox works just about perfect on stock.

I wouldn't say 'the best', both devices have pros and cons.
- but for what I'm after, beautiful phone, feels premium, awesome screen, OTA updates and dedicated nvidia T3 optimized games, the HOX is definitely the better option for me as I don't require removable battery or sd card slot.
But for me, the screen alone is sooo much better on the HOX, and the screen is always the most important spec of any large touch screen phone.

Yeah but on my current device. Despite having all the goodies and kernel development. The camera still doesn't work as good as the stock. There's still sound issues etc. I never read about these things with OMAP devices.

Thanks for the reply. I really just want it for the hardware. But rating is over the S3 does bring a smile to my face.

See what happens to SGS3 when SGS4 coming in. HOX will get better support. I mean long term support. Look at SGS2, not much going in in the original development, ICS upgrade are rushed work. I have a SGS2 so I know the dev environment for that phone. Most dev ditch it for Galaxy Nexus or SGS3. Look at SGS1, no official ICS by Samsung lolz, which have the same spec as Nexus S, and reason is Touchwiz related. Yes SGS3 get CM9 first. Now lets see who get CM10 first. SGS2 got a late CM9 cuz of sources. Not only late on releasing sources, but Samsung messed it up. The CM9 devs almost give up(which i'm glad they didnt) and now AOSP roms are better than TW ICS on SGS2. HTC Sensation got CM9 first compared to SGS2(which was released at the same time). See what i did there? Samsung will dump their previous flagship that easy.
Sensation VS SGS2
- same time release with Gingerbread but when ICS rolled out, Samsung released a rushed firmware upgrade and rushed sources, which makes CM9 slower while Sensation got everything working easily in the early CM9 phase. SGS2 had it too, but too many things not working.
- Sensation still got true and RD devs working on, while SGS2 has many winzippers(no offense to anyone) only(see their forums, has it split between 2 development threads). cuz RD devs on SGS2 find it difficult to work with SGS2 sources. I am not sure why, but no updates for months from them, except CM9 team.
SGS3? yeah cuz they got released with ICS so they got CM9 working fast. Now see when Jelly Bean comes. SGS2 has a lot of devs in the early days, but most has ditch it half way. I admit, SGS2 is still a great device. it was a legendary that revolutionize the dual core, but Samsung wasted it when they have a new flagships.
Your choice. if you like changing phones, go for SGS3, cuz you can buy SGS4 afterwards. but if not, go for HOX, more power till the end of its life. else, buy an iphone. much more easier, peace of mind.

I think the HOX is a brilliant phone, and I've had none of the more permanent faults, like the WiFi issue..
Only fault I've had was the yellow spots, but they went away the next day and I haven't seen them since, also I think it was my own fault.. I was in a public place and I was messing about with settings when it started blaring out music, really loud, and I couldn't turn it down, so I applied pressure to the back to silence it.

Your choice in the end.
I've got both devices and will be sending back my SGS3 for a full refund.
Why?
- I prefer Sense,
- I prefer SLCD2,
- I prefer the brightness,
- I prefer the looks,
- I prefer the build,
- I prefer HTCs overall device support including OTAs and longer albeit slower releases of newer Android versions,
- I prefer the helpful guys on this side,
- I prefer the camera
- I prefer the social network integration,
- I prefer the mail app,
etc etc
Both are good phones don't get me wrong, I'll keep saying any user will be happy with either BUT:
- Removable/extendable battery
- Extendable storage
If the above 2 are important to you avoid the HOX and opt for something else, if not an issue the HOX is a good choice out of the 2 top end Android handsets presently.
I'm not going to say buy the HOX over the SGS3 or vice versa, but I do suggest you handle both then make a decision as user experience is better than me or anyone else saying x y or z about the device.

Another opened BS thread, clutter, nothing to learn, boring, pfffff...
To my opinion it's, to yours it's probably not.

Thanks again everyone. As I said, for me thi sis more about hardware purchase than software preference. I'm not too fond of Sense and really haven't played with TW enough to have an educated decision. But ultimately want rid of the bloat and want to be in charge of my own destiny. Hearing that this phone is considered a first class citizen of the community and is most likely to be the successor to the HD2 is what swings it for me. As I'm coming the Incredible S which for all of it's beauty is essentially a third class citizen. I'll look forward to picking up my HOX midweek.

You will never get a real successor to the HD2. I highly doubt that there will be a phone released any time soon which will be able to do so much and still have such active development after nearly three years.
The One X is good but Sense is very unnecessary for ICS in comparison to GB and Froyo. TouchWiz on the other hand is actually rather great now. I hated it for older versions of Android but it seems perfect on the SGS3. It's the little details which are really very impressive, and it's just so smooth. And to whoever said the screen on the SGS3 is dull, with all due respect are you an idiot?! It's by far the best phone screen I've used (better than the One X as well).
One more advantage of the SGS3 over the One X is just how simple it is to root. From what I've read about the One X, it's a bit troublesome to root and flash custom ROMs etc. whilst even someone like myself (never flashed a native Android phone before) can easily use Odin and flash things without really having to do too much thinking.

The one x's screen is better then the s3's... It's sharper and the colours look so much better. Plus u can actually view it in sunlight.

Samsung T699 Thoughts

Anyone have any first impressions on the Samsung T699? Will it be a viable replacement to our Sidekick 4G? Or could the analysis of the T699 help with the development of the Sidekick 4G? These are what crossed my mind when I saw the following post at Engadget.

The keyboard looks good, especially the inverted T arrow pad. I sure wish our Sidekick had that. The form factor's a bit more generic. I quite like how the sidekick feels in landscape mode, so that's slightly less appealing. And the spec would be a nice step up, perhaps enough to make those console emulators practical.
No mention made of price or battery life though. We'll have to see how those are. If they're reasonable, I suspect I'll be picking one up for christmas.

I'd be interested if the keyboard has good tactile feedback and works well, and if the device gets official CyanogenMod support i'd like to avoid OEM overlays if possible from now on.

5-row key /w arrow keys is very nice.
As said above, I really like the feel (raised left/right edges) of the SK4G, and that will be worse, but if the keyboard feels good it will work.
A cap-buttons for menu & back is weird too (I prefer real buttons, but with 4.0 I thought it was not supposed to have buttons at all).
I could end up with that next year as well. I really wish they would just repackage the SK4G with the same case, bigger/better edge-to-edge screen, better camera with flash, and better cpu/ram (nfc + hdmi-out would be my only other wishes).

After the way Samsung and T-Mobile continually mis-handled and then abandoned the Sidekick 4G, my main criterion for a new device is going to be a vibrant Android development community, and built-from-scratch community ROMs.
I'm done with Samsung's ROMs. If I'm not 100% certain of a complete, buildable, relatively standard Android source tree, with sensible drivers and whatnot, I simply won't be buying.

It was sad to see them drop the Sidekick so quickly, but how was it mis-handled? I did not follow much news about the Sidekick until the beginning of this year. However, I too am frustrated with the Samsung ROM. I have looked around here for a good replacement, but have not tried any yet.
Well, unless there is another qwerty phone out by this time next year, it looks like i will be getting a T699, whether or not there is a dev community.

How was the Sidekick 4G mishandled? Let me count the ways.
1. Shipped with Froyo instead of Gingerbread at a time when GB was the current release
2. Never updated past Froyo
3. Kernel sources, when released, were an abominable mess. Too eccentric to help with integration into Cyanogen, AOKP, etc.
4. Never fixed TouchWiz' preposterous memory leaks
5. Abandoned officially at just around a year after release
Basically, T-Mobile appears to have cared more about refreshing the "Sidekick" name, than they cared about the user experience or software quality. The Sidekick's official ROM is complete garbage. Such great hardware... but Samsung and T-Mobile put concrete galoshes on the SK4G and chucked it in the river.

If I remember correctly from kies and such, the last update, kj2 came out around 11/7/2011, making the support for the device lasting less than 7 months after the launch date(which was 4/20.... I remember that for some reason )
All in all it sounds like the stock Touchwiz UI was a bit of a hack job and got little attention. It's a shame because I too really like the physical design of the device.

Disappointing QWERTY myTouch

Seriously, they are going to only be running Gingerbread 2.3 on the new myTouch device. That means the Samsung's T699 is my only hope.

I'm pretty excited about it. I've been wanting a high-end qwerty device again, and the spec bump on the T-699 looks to be very nice. 1.5ghz dual core S3(or possibly S4, but not getting my hopes up) with a gig of RAM and a 720P screen. Going from a Sidekick 4G to this device will be like going from a Galaxy S with a keyboard to a Galaxy Nexus with a keyboard.
Regarding the very poor SK4G software support, my theory is that T-Mobile got their hands too much in the software and Samsung just didn't want to spend the time to truly fix and update all the T-Mobile customized stuff. Don't get me wrong, all the "designer" elements of the lock screen and launcher and everything were nice and kinda expected for the Sidekick name, but they did such a half-assed job making it work right that I would rather have had regular old Touchwiz. It's my fond hope that with the T-699, T-Mobile will ask much less of Samsung in the customization department and we'll at least wind up with a very good functional 4.0.4 release software. Heck, maybe we'll even get lucky and Jellybean will hit sometime in the first half of 2013
Anyway, I'm getting this phone. I tried very hard to move to a touchscreen only device, but I just miss my qwerty keyboard too much. Even the 4.3 inch screen on my One S combined with the trace keyboard just doesn't cut it for me. I only got the One S because I truly believed that qwerty phones with even moderately decent specs were no more. Hell, the last good one that came to T-Mobile was the myTouch 4G Slide, and I hated the weak feedback on the keys on that one. Now I find out that not only are we getting a 720p screen on 1.5ghz dual core device, but the keyboard on it has the fifth row for the numbers? Thank you Samsung for keeping the slider form factor alive!

I too went a few months with no slider-keyboard, and to tell you the truth, I didn't even miss it that much... until I went back to a slider-keyboard and realized every time I used the hard keyboard what a PITA it would have been to do the same on a soft-keyboard only. My parents all use slider phones too because they say they can't type on a soft-keyboard at all. I use my soft keyboard 80% of the time, but the other 20% I'm very glad to have a slider. I don't know why they haven't become the standard, other then the fact Apple doesn't make one and people are sheep. If everyone were forced to use a slider for a week (running the same OS they were used to), I bet very few would want to go back to a candybar in exchange for a few mm in thickness.

While the T699 looks very appealing, I don't think the Sidekick 4G is going to be the final Sidekick device ever released. At least...I hope not...

Same here. I loved the sidekicks when I was a kid, even though I never could afford one
Sliders in general feel like home to me, and the Android factor in the 4g made me fall head over heels in love.... until I saw that it was on froyo. :/
I desperately hope bhudaven (hope I spelled his name right) perserveres through the trolling and ports 2.3 from SGS4G over to the sidekick. ANYTHING higher than froyo would be appreciated.
If tmobile even thinks about making another sidekick, it better be 4.0 or better or i'm going to give a mental jackslap to their logo every time i see it.

Sidekick or not, there are only 4 QWERTY phones with Android 4.0 and higher... Only 4. Looks like the end.

Well, T-Mobile will be releasing LTE-capable phones this year. Let's hope there's a Sidekick LTE on the way.

As a long time user of hardware keyboard (G1 and T mobile G2) finally gave up and got Galaxy Note 2. Scren is large enough to use on screen keyboard even with my fat fingers. If they ever make high end phone with hardware keyboard I may switch back but so far I'm happy with quad core cpu and large screen.

Phonescoop.com has only one review and had zero discussions on the Relay...until I posted one.
It seems that physical keyboard phones are just not in high demand. What a shame.
