How do I know which rom is aosp and which is cm7? I ask this to figure out which kernel I should install. As of now I'm on the miui rom and need to pick out a kernel from fauxs thread. Thx

So long as the developers listed the kernel as cm or aosp then you will be safe. I think cm7 is build off aosp source code.

All Cyanogen Mod ROMs are ASOP ROMs as Cyanogen Mod only builds ROMs crime source code. Also the MIUI ROMs or built from Cyanogen Mod source code which is Google source code that has been tweaked by the Cyanogen Mod team then released under the Cyanogen Mod name.
As far as how to tell you just have to read the thread title most of the time as it will have ASOP or CM7 in the thread title usually. If not it will say something about it being ASOP or being based off of CM7 somewhere in the first couple of post.

I don't believe MIUI is built from CM7 source anymore. It's AOSP.

So did I but I was informed last yesterday in another thread that it wsa built from CM Source. I will be looking into this now as it has my curiosity up now.
I believe its all based off cm7. Last I checked xboarder56 didnt have aosp on sensation built. It was harder than he thought. dude gave up and went elsewhere.
MIUI is AOSP with elements of CM7 code
To answer the OP, at present no one has built a 100% AOSP ROM so they're all CM7-based

I have a Moto Droid 1 and I am currently running CM7 Nightlies. I'm trying to find a way to get HTC Sense to run on the Droid. I was wondering what would happen if I took the CM7 that is designed for the HTC Incredible and installed it on my Droid.
Any thoughts?
Nobody's tried this?

The CM7 for Incredible does not have Sense. None of the CMs have Sense. It's an AOSP ROM.
The update won't work, and might brick your phone. The Incredible has different drivers and a different kernel than your phone. You need a ROM designed for your phone.
Try searching the Droid subforums for a port of Sense. That's the only way you're going to get Sense on your phone.
Thanks for the heads up! So if want to continue to use cyanogen, then sense is an impossibility? Or any custom rom for that matter?

cyanogen = NO Sense, never will have sense
cyanogen also known as AOSP
When searching for a rom if it has AOSP in title chances are it is based off of cyanogen.

Uh, nope. AOSP = Android Open Source Pfoject. If it says AOSP, it is based off the original Android source code (but may incorporate code from other AOSP ROMs).
Sense is not AOSP. HTC took the AOSP source and heavily modified it to make their Sense UI. ROMs based on this can't be considered AOSP.

I guarantee just about every aosp rom out there has some files from CM.
Maybe not a Google device, but others have some libs or drivers of some sort. Go look at the github's of roms. You will see "forked" from cyanogen tree, if not mad props to the chef!
By the way I didnt say sense is aosp
"Uh, nope. AOSP = Android Open Source Pfoject. If it says AOSP, it is based off the original Android source code"
Where do you think cyanogen comes from, the moon?
You would have to take a sense kernel and modify it to run on a motor Droid. It might be possible but it'd be a large undertaking

This is so tiring. Another thread about worthless source code. Source code without drivers compiled for our device against ICS is worthless. Devs cannot build an ICS build that will be stable without specific drivers built for iCS and the new kernel. Until LG releases or at least leaks an ICS build for our phone, we are not going to get a stable ICS rom, despite their being AOSP source code.

i never said anything about the devs to start making rom didnt i???? now that source code is release brands like lg will start working on then since they said they would. i know htc said that ics will come to my sensation earlier 2012
and even though developers make an ics rom without the manufacture release its versio it would not work correctly because of the drivers. it will have problems with gps etc etc

Release of ICS source code is still an important development for community rom development.
We can still get a stable build by compiling ICS against Gingerbread kernel.
We have fully working drivers for Gingerbread kernel.
Yes but the cookie in Ice Cream Sandwich is not Gingerbread.

I really hope you're right. My only concern before getting this phone was that of NVIDIA providing the devs with the drivers that we need for further Android updates.
Who's using cornerstone and what ROM are you using and is it stable for day to day use?

LOL at you not liking AOSP ROMs LMAO what do you think that CM9 is?
AOSP = Android Open Source Project. It is when Google releases the source code to a particular version of android (GB, HC, ICS) and this source is adapted to your device by usually taking existing kernels (or kernel source code) and drivers for your device and making the Google source code run, pretty much without many additions..although, if you like spice, you will find it in an AOSP ROM. Asus' Stock ROM is also based on Googles source, but then Asus is not obligated to release it's proprietary source (what it adds to the OS that Google AOSP ROM did not have, bloatware, drivers, etc). Therefore what we are able to do in a ROM based on Asus' is limited compared to what can be done in an AOSP ROM. Some are stable, some aren't..it isn't a function of it being an 'AOSP' ROM lol it's just how developed or underdeveloped the ROM is. CM9 for TF101 is way more unstable than CM9 for my Epic, they are both AOSP and from the same source even, and they run differently- because they are at different stages of development and being developed by different teams of people.
Don't be so quick to scoff at AOSP ROMs..they are not all the same, and nothing in the term 'AOSP' means 'unstable' or otherwise anything to be afraid of.

Ok thank you very much for your perfect explanation. But why do you say that CM9 for TF101 is unstable? In the relative thread i read that the users are very satisfied by this rom.
Dont lol at me! hehehe
I know CM9 is AOSP.. that was the first and only AOSP Rom I ever tried..
I'm not scoffing AOSP Roms off I just didn't see the advantage but I didn't know that Asus doesn't release it's proprietary source.
Don't be so quick to lol at people apart from that it was a good reply... I might give them a go again in the future

Since HTC has just dropped the 3.0 kernel source for the Sensation, is anyone working on a pure AOSP ROM? Not a de-Sensed ROM based off the One S leak, or a CM9 build with drivers hacked in from somewhere, but a real built-from-source ROM.
I'm thinking of taking a crack at building one, but I didn't want to duplicate someone else's efforts.

Sorry, yeah, I forgot about OpenSensation. I might clone the repo and play with the new kernel anyway, just for kicks. I haven't really tried to build Android from scratch before, but I'm a pretty good C/C++/C# programmer, so it might be fun to try.

No problem m8, i found another one the virtuous team work(ed) on a AOSP ROM too.
But i donĀ“t know is it is still supported: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1428866

I just managed to build OpenSensation with the HTC kernel source and boot it on my phone. Now it's time to play.
Well, it's a start!

AOKP
For the record I'd like to say that there is also AOKP, which builds on OpenSensation, which builds on CM9 repos, as far as I can gather.
I'm currently running b31 (b32 came out 2012-04-16) and most everything works. There are a couple of features missing from b31 that I used on CM7.1 Alpha, (like Quiet Hours), but they appear to have been added in b32.
If you're looking for something AOSP, my suggestion would be AOKP.
They pack Nova Launcher as an alternative to the stock launcher, but I uninstalled both and went with APEX, which IMHO beats both on customizability and unintrusive interface. YMMV however...
I have been running cm for a week or so. I wanna try a aokp rom . is there a list of aokp ROM and how can you tell if the ROM is aokp? I'm new and I want to explore the aokp side of gs3.
Thanks

There are two types of custom Roms. There is the Roms based on the OEM version of android (touchwiz from Samsung and Sense from HTC) and AOSP. AOKP is an AOSP ROM not another type of ROM like MIUI is. With that being said we don't make recommendations as it leads to debates about which ROM is the best. Also everyone here has had different experiences with each ROM to really be of any help. Lastly your thread will be closed by the moderators.
The reason i ask is cause i go to this lnk and only shows aokp on one. As for a new person its a bit confusng.

AOKP is just a modified version of CM. aokp.co: http://aokp.co/devices/d2vzw You'll want Milestone. Keep in mind this is 4.3 and it's based off CM10... there isn't an AOKP for 4.4/CM11 yet.
If you're talking about AOSP-based roms, which are different than CM-based, there's a few (Gummy, Liquid, Carbon, SlimKat...); my daily driver is Gummy with the dkp kernel.

That isn't up to date as there have been at least 20 or so ROMs since then. As I said before AOKP is an AOSP ROM albeit a popular one. AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project. Roms like CyanogenMod,AOKP,ParanoidAndroid and PAC-man are all AOSP ROMs. AOKP is a specific AOSP ROM. The AOKP ROM on that link is the official one created by team AOKP. Beepea206 CyanogenMod is still an AOSP based rom as it is based off the official Android releases like all other AOSP ROMs. Yes they have added their own code and features like the ROMs I have mentioned in this post but they are still AOSP based ROMs. It is like Ubuntu and other Linux OSes they all have added their own codes and features but all are still Linux OSes.
Is there a up to date list on the ROMs than. Since I find ones like the one I posted is out of date. Or a master list of aokp ROM and aosp ROMs and such?

Wrong, albeit semantically.
- AOSP roms are those compiled directly from Google's sources, with device and hardware files modified to work with the rom. For a rom to be 'pure AOSP', it has to be free from any CM repositories, which is why all the non-CM roms right now are 'AOSP-based'... they use the hardware and device repos from CM. As it stands right now, there are no 'pure' AOSP roms for the d2vzw.
- AOKP is a kang (aka the 'K' in AOKP, or Android Open Kang Project) of CM, generally adding more features like the navigation bar and status bar tweaks. There are also AOKP builds that 'cherrypick' things from CM and the AOKP githubs.
- CM is a custom, modified version of the AOSP framework with a slew of hacks and mods; it's essentially a derivative/variant version of Android, drawing on the open-source nature of the OS to create a new one.

No their isn't any at the moment. You will have to go through original Android development section and it isn't a list per se .
