Hi! I am strongly considering the Skyrocket but I've always enjoyed the extra protection of Gorilla Glass screens. Any reason why they decided on glass screens for this model? And how is the screen holding up from day to day wear?
Thanks...
I'm confused by your post, are you asking why they decided on gorilla glass on this model? Cause you clearly said that you "enjoyed the extra protection of Gorilla Glass". If you want to know does it have gorilla glass, yes it does. And its holding up very well I use mine with no screen protector. Third phone i've had with Gorilla Glass and havent scratched one yet. Not to say that they cant be scratched, I just havent scratched one of mine.

Sorry for the confusion. I've read a few reviews that this phone does NOT have Gorilla Glass, so that is why I asked. So if you say it does, then I am sold on it.
This is where I saw one of the reviews that said no Gorilla Glass and it shows scratches (around the 1:35 mark):

From all the reviews I've read, PhoneArena is the ONLY publication that has said the SR doesn't have Gorilla Glass. It actually does. They probably just got a bad sample or something.
Thanks for all of the info...strongly considering this phone but have been tempted to try Windows Phone 7, in the form of HTC Titan too...
Some people seem to be confused about Gorilla glass too. From my understanding gorilla glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof. So you still can end up scratching it.

Gorilla Glass... scratches.
It's just difficult to break.
Just ordered two of 'em!
I think that video has been debunked. I have read somewhere that they actually scratched the screen themselves before putting it on the ground. Some of the comments for the video you linked specifically points out things like "something in his left hand" and "swiping his hand across the screen before sliding it on the ground".
Now, I'm not saying gorilla glass is indestructible, I think most people are aware that gorilla glass CAN be scratched under certain circumstances but I don't think it's as easy as they portray in that video.

Even though it doesn't have gorilla glass, the screen seems to be scratch resistant. I know because I don't use a screen protector.

Same here, I don't use a screen protector and don't think I need one at this point. I've had my phone for months now, and its been through situations where scratches should be inevitable. The case has a few nicks around the edges, but there is only 1 tiny tiny hairline scratch going across the home button. Not noticeable, I only noticed it when looking at the slight wave of the glass right next to the lamp.

Even though it suppose to be scratch proof, i would still recommend a screen protector.
For who are you saving the screen? To the next owner? Doesn't it look ugly with the screen protector? I have never understand these. I use my phones usually 6-12months. I have got twice a tiny, tiny hair scratch to the screen. One was Gorilla glass (I think it's soooo over hyped), other one just scratch resistant. For my htc hero I never got a scratch in 6 months... I wonder how you treat your phones...
So no I don't use a screen protector, not after Nokia 5800XM which had a plastic screen. And even with that I got bored to the protector and rip it off after few week...

i like to keep it scratch free.cuz im like that.
but even if the next adopt of my phone would have a scratch free nexus s
it still means more money than a scratched one.
though im keeping my android phone's(for development for example)
unless i really need the money
probably something my 8yo daughter did.
it's small -- only a couple of mm, but it's there.
hell, i watched that youtube of the guy dragging a nail across his TF.
this wasn't supposed to happen, right?
anybody else got scratches?
can u post a pix of the scractch if possible?
Gorilla glass isn't supposed to be scratch-proof.
it decreases cracking from dropping not scratches sheesh what do you think it is made of diamond? get a zagg screen protector and your screen will never scratch again

It's not about strength - it is about being scratch resistant. That said, it's not scratch-proof - nothing is. Basically, if you've got a tiny scratch then it would be a large scratch if it weren't gorilla glass. You can still scratch it, but it's harder to do. Apparently sand is a big culprit.
gorilla glass is not scratch-proof, its only drop-proof (cracks)
Sand will scratch gorilla glass really easy.
Sent from my Galaxy S II (i777)
ive got a scratch on mine i think sand was the cause
Dumb question maybe but surely most people use screen protectors to prevent scratches even with gorilla glass?
Gorilla glass can be scratched but its pretty good though I would never leave it unprotected for the reason it is scratchable.

I also have a very small scratch in my glass
After some time you completly ignore it and dont regard it.
i'm sorry. i can't post a pic of my scratch as i've now put a protector on the screen, which renders it completely invisible. i know! horse after cart.
this is the 2nd protector i tried; the first, a matte one, i didn't like, as it dulled the display too much. the one i have now, which shows fingerprints somewhat (not as bad as without) and causes reflections, is pretty much indistinguishable from no protector at all. very happy.
i'd recommend everybody now to get a screen protector on their TF. don't rely on the gorilla glass.
I was just talking to a friend with his Nexus Galaxy the other day. He saw my phone, SET4G the SET4G, and said he wished he had Gorilla Glass, as he had gotten a scratch, and put a screen protector on his.
Mine didn't have any scratches......... at the time, and I said, watch, I'll get a scratch now.
I got a long scratch, very light, that I noticed the other day. Plus some tiny scratches.
I don't play in the Sandbox, so I have no idea how they got there.
May have been there before, but I didn't notice. But maybe not, as I notice everything
They are very unnoticeable, but I ordered a Steinheil Crystal screen protector to slap on it.
2 to a pack for $13.99 cause I usually screw up the first install
I've read that Corning is coming out with another type of glass to supercede Gorilla Glass. I believe it's called Lotus Glass it may be available already, and may be installed on some upcoming smartphones, so I've read) and Japan already has a scratch resistant glass, I believe called Ashai? Glass.
I think Gorilla Glass has a Hardness of 7 on the Mohs Hardness scale.
The problem is that Quartz also has a Hardness of 7,which can be found in sand, as well as dust particles.
Only had my nexus 5 since January and I've noticed 2 large marks in the screen which I can only deuce are from my fingers scrolling up and down on the screen.
They are in exactly the same place where I usually screen webpages and email etc.
They are not noticeable when the screen is on but when off and under certain lighting conditions they are obvious.
My wife's old Sony Ray had the same marks after a while yet on her iPod touch and my old iPhone they are very faint compared to my Nexus.
Anyone else seeing this? Surley it shouldnt be doing this.
I haven't cleaned the screen with any chemicals etc.
I've read about this happening to others. There is a coating on the screen that can wear off. It's called ophthalmic coating or something like that. I'd rma it, and slap a screen protector on it day one.

It's called oleophobic coating :victory:
And yes Lokke9191 is right, it sounds like the coating has been worn out. Oleophobic coating does wear over time on any device. The length of wear showing depends on the quality of the coating, installation at the factory and the type of usage. I reckon the OP has a device that didn't have a good setting of the coating and I also recommend RMA'ing it.

There's no such thing as a good setting of the coating, its either their or it isn't. either OP was cleaning his screen with his t-shirt or some rough materials with chemicals.
The only way to solve this is to buy an Oleophobic droplet kit from Japan (ebay) and reapply the coating yourself.
or to prevent this next time buy a tempered glass screen protector
The only thing is when putting a screen protector, DO NOT USE THE INCLUDED Alchohol Prep pad or whatever "Screen Cleaner" they provide just wipe with a microfiber and apply the protector, using the "Screen cleaners" will weaken the Oleophobic coating on the glass and won't be no good in the future when you want to go naked.
All smartphones and devices with Corning Gorilla glass or another glass with this coating will wear off
Look @ my Note 2 and iPhone 4 both were repelling water and fingerprints but fast forwards 2 years later with constant usage...
Not that much.. it has a really sticky feeling to it.. Good thing about samsung is the gorilla glass is actually ontop of the LCD so you can remove it and replace it.
i have this on my n7... it's not that obvious..
Wait, whattt?? Why are you guys talking about Oleophobic coating?? That coating is to prevent smudges and finger prints... That's got nothing to do with the scratches the OP's nexus has suffered.
Gorilla glass 2 or 3.. After all it's a GLASS and it can get scratched for silliest of reasons sometimes..
Thanks for the replies.
My point was that its only 4 months old.
Yes I have rubbed the screen with a T-shirt a few times but I haven't used any solutions etc on the screen.
My iPhone 3gs screen isn't showing signs of this as far as I can tell. Neither is my 1st gen iPad.

Its not scratches its a large mark about an inch in length and around .75 inch wide
Its not noticble when the screen is on it just annoys me that I spent £400 on a phone which is showing these issues after only 4 months.
I'm just thinking of resalse value as well.

To be honest no one cares about it resisting fingerprints most people care only on scratches.
I think there were several other reports previously on oleo phobic coatings wearing off easily on the iPhone 3g when oleo phobic was initially for cellphone application. There has not been any improvements on it since then, maybe it's just the way the coating was applied that makes a difference.

its being RMA'd when i have time to sort it out.
ill post a pic of it when i can aswell its not that noticeable just more of an annoyance
Thru out the years, I have had phone with gorilla glass and have had no screen protectors ever and have had no scratches ever! Now, I am carful as hell with my phones but my z2 I did the same as I usually do and I did get scratches. Front and back. My only guess is, this was because of the dragontail glass which is not as strong as gorilla glass when it comes to scratches. I do hope that sony went with gorilla glass this time. Anyone know for sure?
PS - I want to say that the Z3 is dragontail glass again as GSM arena spec site says "shatterproof glass" and it says gorilla glass 3 for other phones like the S5 and Note 4. The specs listed there for the Z3 for the screen protection say the same as the Z2. That sucks... ohwell, guess I need a crappy screen protector on this shinny NEW phone... sigh....

Get a Nilkin tempered glass screen protector if you really feel worried. I've ordered one. They feel as good, if not actually better than the glass on the phones anyway, and a drop means the screen protector breaks, not the screen.
Really recommend one.

Is it Gorilla glass 4 or sapphire? I can't find anywhere information about this.
It's a Gorilla Glass 4. Front and back
I know about front and back glass. I'm asking about camera glass cover.
He answered your question the first time. It's gorilla glass on both sides

Are you sure the camera lens is gorilla glass? It is not part of the main rear glass panel.
Samsung are not making a big deal about the material (like HTC are with the M9 being sapphire), so I am guessing it is neither. Probably no different than the glass used in the Note 4 which it seems was easy to scratch.
Androidauthority managed to crack the lens on their review unit.

It seems like a normal glass... Noted as well in the review by android authority that they cracked the lens camera
I read somewhere that it is in fact GG4. Source I cannot give, since I read that a long time ago. However I've never had problems with the lens glasses on my previous Galaxy phones, I have no reason to believe it will be much different with the S6.
And the fact that AA managed to crack the glass doesn't mean it is NOT GG4. It is a glass, no matter what marketing name you are going to give it, after you drop it, chances are that it will break. So having GG4 doesn't make your phone invincible ya know.....

I was wondering that too. My guess is that since two of their major competitors (Apple and HTC) have made a big deal over the sapphire their lens cover, and Samsung has been silent on that, that it is neither sapphire nor gorilla glass.

Its at least gorilla glass. No I have no proof but there's no way they wrap the phone in gg4 then put something cheap on the only vulnerable part. That would be a PR nightmare.

I called Samsung and was on hold for 15 minutes while they confirmed. They told me the front and back are Gorilla Glass 4, BUT the glass covering the camera is regular glass.
After experiencing scratching on my Note 4 this is a deal breaker as the GS6 looks more difficult to remove and replace. If Apple, LG, and HTC can put sapphire over the camera to mitigate scratching, so should Samsung.

so i will keep the plastic on !
Yeah, this sucks. I have had my s6 for 2 weeks. Camera cover is already scratched to hell. All I've done is put it down on my desk and in my pocket. Not happy. This is going back to Verizon. Will wait for the next moto x (which must be a gorilla glass cover as it's unscathed after a year)
