[Q] Run BlackTrack5 on DesireS - How Copy a large file to sdcard -Any Idea?? - HTC Desire S

hi, i want to try blacktrack in my ds, i download the bt5 image file from official website, but it larger than 4gb, about 4.8gb, and fat32 doesn't support that, i mean i cann't copy a file larger than 4 gb on fat32, and when i format my sdcard to NTFS the phone cannot recognize it, which filesystem android can support except fat32?
thanks, and sorry if my eng is bad

You can use ext3 or 4 to hold files that large, however Windows dosnt natively support these formats you have to use Linux
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App

thanks, android recognize that like before? i mean can i use that as defult filesystem for sdcard?
and another question, how can format to ext4 directly from the phone? any app?
and another! can i make several partition and if i can,how can i use them?where can i find them? and i read somewhere that it can break the phone, is that dangerous?

Android does recognize this as standard yes.
You can format the sd card and make partions in 4ext recovery.
It wont damage your phone but could wear out the sd card after lots of use

i don't understod!! if it can recognize that how can i use my files on it?
u say that i can format sdcard to ext4 but it doesn't show in sdcard?it show like internal memory? and cannot use by app like gallery or music or camera?
i found a partition sdcard option in recovery, but it up to 4gb
can i do that with acronis partition?!

It should still see it as a sdcard. But im not 100% sure and dont have a sdcard spair to try.
If you cant format the sdcard in recovery you will need to do it in linux or find a program that can do it under windows

i formad sdcard with ext2 and3, doesn't work, is there anyway to mount sdcard which format ed with ntfs or ext as sdcard? it most be possible
i'm going to get angry, why android just support fat32 for sdcard? this is a huge problem

it is very ridiculous that i cant do this just because i cant have a 5 gb file in my phone, specially in 2011!!!
i'm sure that chinese phones (those which have not operating system and have analog tv tunner!!) can support NTFS!!!

the developers in here cant answer me, u expect that i get my answer there?
i cant find my answer there, mybe that is impossible to use another filesystem, and in that position we must decrease image size, this is not a dump simple question, please understand

[Q] Unmodifiable microSD card

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I've this problem, and it's becoming frustrating, really.
Every modification I do to the microSD, such as copying files or deleting them, gets cancelled after an unmount.
Example, if I delete a file, it's deleted. As soos as I unmount the microSD (or unmounts by itself), the deleted file comes back, like nothing happened.
I've even tried formatting the microSD from a computer, first with Windows, but after a low level format, the content was back there! I tried then with an hard format, but it didn't even start. So I thought it was Windows' problem, and I've tried with a GNU/Linux application, GPartED. I was able to see both the partitions on my microSD, an EXT4 (1GB) and the FAT32 one. I was able to format the FAT32 partition, but when I tried to delete the EXT4 one, it gave me an unknown error. I've even tried deleting the whole Partition Table, but it couldn't. Files are still there.
Therefore, my phone is unusable, I can't install any app, they disappear after a while, I can't download anything, I can't take pictures or sync my music folder.
The problem is the same even when the microSD is plugged in my computer... It's a class 2 16GB microSD card... Please help
Take off and nuke it from orbit. Only way to be sure!
I would try formatting it from another PC before writing off the card, but failing that i would just replace it.
I've tried from other computers and in many other ways, but nothing. I've bought a class 6 microSD card, it seems like the old one was broken.
lol like the nuke it comment above
Yip, unfortunately all cards have a limited life span depending how much you write/read, i had one fail a while ago, nothing could be done so in the bin it went
first with gparted , recreate partition table ans after primary fat32 et one other primary ext4
second you mount ext4 partition of your external sd card automatically ??? !!! tell me how

very short answer
I presume hp usb disk storage is for windows PC to see usb devices ext4
question is how to see ext4 IN android dor data or applications
Chkdsk /r ?
Forever living in my Galaxy Ace using XDA App
chkdsk is not implanted on my SGS
but,
DF give a mounted partition /data/sdext2 from /dev/block/vold/179:10
and this is not visible (i think because it is mounted under data) from any android programme, even file manager, even ext4 extension tools from CF-root
so that's what i ask in this forum

File size limitation

What are the chances someone will write a rom that has a different format for the file system on the internal storage of the Transformer? The reason I ask is because I have a lot of blue ray rips that I can not watch on my Transformer due to the file system limitations. Nothing over 2GB can be transferred to the device and I can not seem to get ah external SD card formatted to a different spec that will allow the full file sizes.
I know on my phone the dev reformatted the file system to something else for his from to allow the full file sizes. What are the chances of that happening with the Transformer? I have this big pretty screen I would love to take full advantage of. Watching my DVD rips is only so great
NTFS should be your friend, right? That's how I got my external hd to accept files larger than 4 gb. For the SD card ofc, dunno how to get the pad's file system there.
Or use the Linux ext2/3/4 systems!

How about formatting the external SD card with the Linux ext3 file system, maybe with a Ubuntu Live CD, if someone only has a Windows PC.
That should work, shouldn't it?

That will work. ext2/3/4 depending on what you want. I'd go ext2 as it lacks journalling, theoretically extending the life of your SD (correct me if I'm wrong).
The best option to do this would be to download the gparted live CD, booting into it, inserting your sd into your pc and then formatting it (it's fairly simple).
Only thing is, I don't think Honeycomb will automatically mount the ext SD card when inserted. You would have to do it via mount command in a terminal emulator on your TF. Maybe a custom ROM automatically mounts ext.

Why? Doesn't Android itself use ext4?

Yeah pretty sure it uses some kind of ext, but by default I'm pretty sure it only automatically mounts FAT formatted microSD. I tried this myself with Prime!1.5 a few days ago, with an ext4 Class 2 microSD and it wouldn't mount automatically, although it did recognise the device. Simple mount command in terminal should do the trick.
Although now I'm not sure if OP is talking about SD (via dock) or microSD (via tablet)... as the terms are used rather ambiguously on these forums...

Unbelievable indeed. It really doesn't make sense why non-FAT formatted microSDs aren't liked by Android.
i dont understand it either! Im glad i dont have that issue !

[Q]Fat32 alternatives

Dear XDA members
I've just bought for my Sensation XE 64Gb SD-card and now I am wondering if it's possible to use some other filesystem than Fat32. I understand that there are lots of tools for mounting NTFS or ext4 filesystems but... I am pretty often ROM changer so it's not very useful for me to use some 3rd-party tools which I should install every time I flash new ROM. So does someone use any filesystem except for fat32 for his SD-card? Please tell me about your experience.
P.S Search didn't bring any recent results suitable for ICS
Why? Fat32 Works fine for a phone.
sshede - possibly because FAT32 has a 4GB file size limit. on a 64GB card it's possible that the OP might want to store some larger files on it.
I'm not actually sure in terms of an answer - I know there wasn't an option within 4EXT recovery (I was looking for the option out of curiosity when I last formatted my SD) although it's possible that android may support EXT4 as the SD filesystem? obviously that's what it uses as swap.
Actually it supports ext filesystems but doesn't automount it. I've made an experiment with ntfs sd-card and it works with an app called ntfsSD but I would prefer native support for newer filesystems.
Sent from my HTC Sensation using XDA
Mmm, well ntfs being the windows file system it wouldn't be native, but ext4 definitely should be. Maybe there needs to be some kind of script to auto mount? Someone more knowledgeable will have to chime in on that point.
Sent from my HTC Sensation using XDA
Right now I am back to Fat32. Ext partitions are more system-like for the Android kernel and I guet problems with Nandroid. Ntfs works but some apps (like Gallery) don't use my SD-card. I guess the best solution would be the exFat but it's not supported in OpenSensation yet.

meaning what? swap and ext4?
swap reduces your sd battery life, but it's said that it's not very noticeable, and it's needed with sense 3.5
ext4 just adds space for apps on sdcard as if they were on phone's rom
I mean swap, sorry.
What do you mean with reduce? And how can i swap my sdcard? Can you post me a thread please ? )

I just partitioned my MicroSD card with MiniTool.
First Partition: FAT
Second Partition: Ext2
My laptop recognizes the card through card reader and I can see the two partitions in MiniTool, but my phone (HTC Explorer) does not recognize it. Any suggestions?
Well how are you checking if your phone sees it. Some roms can't use sd2ext. Take a good file explorer like root explorer ans see if there's a folder names sd-ext

I simply use the phone's recovery (in my case 4EXT) , which will walk me thru everything, I didn't bother with a swap partition but rather a dataswap option (specific to my rom), and a 2GB sd-ext (Again supported by default on my rom). And used 4EXT to convert all my internal file systems to ext4 filetype instead of ext3 (again my rom supports it, but not all roms do).
Essentially you can partition SD and most everything else via ClockworkMod or 4EXT.
PS: Generally sd-ext should be the FIRST partition. (or second in the case of swap, sd-ext and fat32), since some Roms will not automatically recognize it if not placed in that order. thus another reason to do it via recovery.
Use the recovery on your phone to partition your SD card then plug your SD card into a Linux box and check to see if it's EXT4 using Gparted.
how to get sd-ext before fat32 in 4ext?

I'm running mimicry-1.4.0, 4ext touch, same as you. When I ask it to partition my new, 16gig, class 10 card, it asks:
size of first sd-ext, to which I reply 2048
size of second sf-ext, to which I reply skip
size of swap, which I also skip,
and then it does the remainder as fat32.
BUT...the fat partition is at the beginning of the card...not the order the app asked for my input...and I don't see how to change them.
Maybe not being first is okay with mimicry?
thanks for your help,
p-d
ps all my file systems are ext4 on the phone itself.

Older s2e may need a specific partition order but both clockwork and 4ext arrange in this order, and the enabler script in my signature needs no apps and works fine with mimicry.

[GUIDE] Mount NTFS formatted SDcard with Read/Write Support

Hello,
This is my First thread on XDA
I wasnt sure whether to post it in General Section Or Development Section. So posted it i General Section.
Now its possible to mount NTFS SDcard on our phone
My config:
GLX-R ZCLA1
ardatdat kernel v1.7b1 voodoo
Please test on other ROMS and report below..
Before Proceeding:
Please do this at ur own risk
Steps:
1. Format the sdcard in NTFS using windows.. (Data will be deleted. Dont forget to backup Data)
OR
1. Download EASEUS Partition Manager and use Option "Convert to NTFS" (Data will be saved but still do a backup before formatting)
2. Insert ur NTFS sdcard and start the phone
3. Phone will recognize it as Blank SD card
4. Download The Attached Driver & restart the phone
5. Flash The driver using CWM
6. Start The Phone (Again Phone will recognize it as Blank SD card)
7. Install Terminal Emulator (From Market)
8. Run Terminal Emulator and type the following lines
Code:
su
ntfs-3g /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /mnt/sdcard/external_sd
vold
9. Wait a few Seconds
10. Now SD card will be mounted as NTFS with Read/Write Capability
NOTE:
Steps 8 to 10 must be repeated after rebooting the phone
NTFS card will be recognized by windows but Steps 8 to 10 must be repeated after Using Mass storage mode
Most of the 3rd Party apps recognize ntfs formatted sdcard without any problems
Files Larger than 4GB can be stored
Use app "Gscript Lite" to place shortcut of the script on homescreen
To Automate steps 8-10 on boot use apps like "Autostart" OR "Script Manager"
(I use Script Manager)
[Known Limitations]
1. The "Blank SD Card notifiction Might not disappear, But dont worry ur sdcard will still be mounted as NTFS at /mnt/sdcard/external_sd
2. Apps previously loaded on SD Card might Not Work.
3. U wont be able to move app to SD Card ("SD Card is full" error will appear)
4. Stock Video Player dont see files from NTFS ( Use MX Player)
5. Stock Music also dont see files from NTFS ( Use players like TTPod or MyMusicOn)
6. Stock Gallery also dont see files from NTFS ( Use PERFECT VIEWER)
7. Stock Camera will be able to take pictures and record videos, but preview is not possible within the app itself. For that use above alternatives apps
This guide is adapted from here.
