[GUIDE] Mount NTFS formatted SDcard with Read/Write Support - Samsung Galaxy R i9103

Hello,
This is my First thread on XDA
I wasnt sure whether to post it in General Section Or Development Section. So posted it i General Section.
Now its possible to mount NTFS SDcard on our phone
My config:
GLX-R ZCLA1
ardatdat kernel v1.7b1 voodoo
Please test on other ROMS and report below..
Before Proceeding:
Please do this at ur own risk
Steps:
1. Format the sdcard in NTFS using windows.. (Data will be deleted. Dont forget to backup Data)
OR
1. Download EASEUS Partition Manager and use Option "Convert to NTFS" (Data will be saved but still do a backup before formatting)
2. Insert ur NTFS sdcard and start the phone
3. Phone will recognize it as Blank SD card
4. Download The Attached Driver & restart the phone
5. Flash The driver using CWM
6. Start The Phone (Again Phone will recognize it as Blank SD card)
7. Install Terminal Emulator (From Market)
8. Run Terminal Emulator and type the following lines
Code:
su
ntfs-3g /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 /mnt/sdcard/external_sd
vold
9. Wait a few Seconds
10. Now SD card will be mounted as NTFS with Read/Write Capability
NOTE:
Steps 8 to 10 must be repeated after rebooting the phone
NTFS card will be recognized by windows but Steps 8 to 10 must be repeated after Using Mass storage mode
Most of the 3rd Party apps recognize ntfs formatted sdcard without any problems
Files Larger than 4GB can be stored
Use app "Gscript Lite" to place shortcut of the script on homescreen
To Automate steps 8-10 on boot use apps like "Autostart" OR "Script Manager"
(I use Script Manager)
[Known Limitations]
1. The "Blank SD Card notifiction Might not disappear, But dont worry ur sdcard will still be mounted as NTFS at /mnt/sdcard/external_sd
2. Apps previously loaded on SD Card might Not Work.
3. U wont be able to move app to SD Card ("SD Card is full" error will appear)
4. Stock Video Player dont see files from NTFS ( Use MX Player)
5. Stock Music also dont see files from NTFS ( Use players like TTPod or MyMusicOn)
6. Stock Gallery also dont see files from NTFS ( Use PERFECT VIEWER)
7. Stock Camera will be able to take pictures and record videos, but preview is not possible within the app itself. For that use above alternatives apps
This guide is adapted from here.

Well, i have 32gb sd card and unable to store files larger than 4gb seriously pisses me off.. so i use ntfs

Modify vold file and change asec=disable to enable
May not work. Backup first

It doesnt work.. Its the NTFS driver thats mounting the sd card...vold doesnt even recognises the file system (Hence it says blank sd card)..

You could try using winrar to split up a file and then merge it within the sd. Not sure if that works but it's an idea

Why to do that now... we have ntfs support and it allows us to store files larger than 4gb...

Ah I didn't read through your first post properly. Anyway I'll see there can be another way for movement of apps to sd.

I really want to do this, but after i formatted the card to NTFS and put it back in my phone i could'nt read anything from the card and when i booted into recovery to flash the zip file, CWM recovery couldn't read the sd card either.
Am i missing something important? If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated.

[FIX][CWM] Error: Unable to mount SDCARD in CWM (and CF-ROOT)

Hi people!
I have seen many people have a problem with the above mentioned error in CWM. Although there are any threads on the topic, none of them are really clear (and often speculate) the method to fix it. And there is a lot of confusion regarding the "sdcard" in the i9003. This is my attempt to clarify and provide a reasonable fix (which worked for my Class 10, 16GB Micro SD (SDHC)).
It goes like this:
-> Boot into CWM recovery
-> Choose any options pertaining to the external sd card (such as backup, restore or install file from .zip)
-> The command returns with an error about how it can't mount "sdcard".
Now, there are a few thing that you have to be mindful of:
1) The "sdcard" mentioned in CWM for the i9003 is actually the external sd card.
- It is done this way so that everything works with the external sd and not with the internal 2GB sd that is present on our phone.
2) The internal sd is referred to as "sd-ext".
3) This pertains to the CWM of our phone. After booting into Android, it is back to "normal".
I tried to do a format in Windows 7's default formatting tool with FAT32, exFAT and NTFS (just eliminate the possibilities) with "default allocation size". It didn't work. Even choosing a larger allocation size did not work.
The Fix:
-> The optimal recommended filesystem for an android SD Card is FAT32.
-> Using the "SD Formatter" (version 3.1 as of this writing) from the SD Association ended up solving my problems.
-> The download link, for Windows (A MAC version is also available), from their site is here. You have to click "I Accept" and accept the terms of the EULA (but who really reads those things anyway ) ?
-> Use a card reader (using your phone is not recommended), make sure you have selected the right card and that you have backed-up all the data on your card (incase you didn't know - formatting erases all your data!).
-> I chose "Quick format" under options and made sure "Format Size Adjustment" was off (These are available under "options").
-> It's done in a few minutes, and it works GREAT! :-D
Cheers people! Hope this clears up some stuff!
This thread deserves to be made a sticky thread...
Moderators please make sure to consider this
Btw - nice job dude you explained it all very well!
Tapashocked via my gt-I9003 with a random keyboard of my choice !
Finally solution came..it works like a charm...thank you so much Bro..
I was bugged by the same problem a few moths ago....
I solved it by Going to Settings > SD card ad phone storage >SD CARD> Umount sd card > Format SD card....
@Lord: thanks mate!
@Symdroid: your welcome! Glad to have helped!
@Neojith: Yeah that usually works, but for some odd reason it didn't work for me last time.
Also, this works without fail even if your SD card is unrecognizable (or comes up as corrupt/damaged) in Android but is detected on the computer.
Sent from my GT-I9003 using XDA App
Man i dont hav any card reader....why cant i do this while it's inside the phone? :-(
Give it a shot... It may work (but be sure you're formatting the right card)!
I recommended a card reader as it is faster, and in most cases the card wasn't detectable by Android but was detectable using a card reader.
Sent from my GT-I9003 using XDA App
Got cranium ROM 3.1 and its not working on my phone. It shows the drive in the PC but i cannot access it. But the phone still reads whats on the SD card. It works well before with kPE...
kudos Erahgon, it worked!
FYI I didnt even use a card reader, used the phone itself (too lazy to search for a reader at home)
Srry guys, was outta town for a few days!
@vadexlux: Good to hear that it works from your phone as well!
@lbraddx : If it's not accessible even in Windows, your card is probably corrupted. Do a quick format in Windows, then use a data recovery software to recover your files. After that, format using the method in the first post, and remember to back-up your files.

cannot access from the phone. but when i flash with odin there is part saying 'error can't mount sdcard-skipped wipe data' but when i check the sd card from my pc its empty and i lost all my file in sd.
here another weird thing, you said the 'sdcard' in CWM is the external sd. I can't mount 'sdcard' but I can mount 'sd-ext'; when i took out my sdcard then I can't mount 'sd-ext'. so I think in my case 'sd-ext' is my sdcard. thanks for replying though. can you figure out my problem?

Flashing with ODIN? What were you flashing with ODIN? When you flash with ODIN it doesn't do anything to the external-sd card.
Have you done an internal-external sd swap? If so, and you want to flash a new firmware using ODIN, you must re-partition (i.e. Use the latona pit file) and then proceed with the flash. After the flash, you may once again swap the external and internal sd cards. I haven't tried this, so this is just my best guess. If this doesn't work, try using your old vold.fstab file (read this thread for more details).

Fascinate owner here. Had the same issue with CWM red (3.x) and Green (4.x).
All I did was reformat the card in Android. You have to unmount it in Settings > SD Card. Then simply Format. All your data will be erased but CWM will be able to read your card again.
WOW... I have THAT trouble too (on a I9100!), read this (googled) post and think.. "hmmm.... all other works fine with the ext. SD-Card... that can't be the fix..."
BUT i test the fix and OMG!... Now all CWM troubles gone! PERFECT!
Thank you very very much! I love the XDA community! *smak* ;-)
Is there any way to do the same for the internal sdcard coz my external sdcard reads fine but internal phone memory as well as internal sdcard are corrupted!
WOW
hi dude..its works like..hapi man!!!Thanks alot!

[Q] Galaxy R SD and USB Storage

Hi Friends,
I'm new to forum and bought new Galaxy R.
The partition in phone is divided into 3
1. phone memory 1.9 gb
2. USB storage 3.7 gb
3. My SD card 7.4 gb
Now the problem is I have download games and my USB storage is full.
I also I tried copying to SD card and playing it. but didn't work.
Since, This is my new phone I don't wanna root at early level since the company warranty is void if it is rooted as I have heard from friends.
I need help to copy into SD card and play without rooting
or atleast my game recognise the path of sd card where i have transferred.
I have seen previous post and tried many soft like apps2sd, etc.. nothing worked.
any alt solutions to copy in SD and play without rooting...
Thanks in advance..
Also when I try to transfer the files to SD Card using manager or other soft's but failed.
For example: Like I tried moving Gameloft Real football 2012 to SD Card. It only copies some 10 or 12 mb file which we download from market not the full files which we download later (i.e approx 400 mb)..

Thanks bro.. It is pretty hard to get this stuff solved..
Also, I tried the application for Mount.. even these app needs rooting.. God knows what to do...
Hi Friends,
I found some important stuff regarding the USB Storage & SD card..
This is for "Non-rooted" mobile phones.
I installed ES file explorer & X-plore and also few other apps.. This is to check how arrangement of file system are in the phone.
Now what i absorbed is, In the display of phone memory it shows 1.9gb and for SD Card memory it shows 4.9gb which is USB storage not the one which I have installed 8gb SD Card.
So its like this..
" /mnt/sdcard " This is for USB 4gb space (Non extendable)
" /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/ " This is for my 8gb sd card (Extendable)
Hence, when ever any App wants to download additional data it goes to USB Storage (I.e /mnt/sdcard ) not to SD 8gb expandable storage card.
I want to configure or use the command to make the application to choose default location as " /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/ " to save in my extendable memory card without rooting.
IS THIS POSSIBLE... Please do let me know from the experts...
THANK YOU..
From what i have seen , u need a shadow copy or u need to bind the folders in some way, which requires root... I see no other way...

[Q] Link2SD Problem

Hi,
After searching a lot here and other place, I didn't find the solution of my problem.
I have 8gb card.
1st break up
6GB - FAT32 - Primary
rest - FAT32 - Primary.
Link2SD is not able to mount.
Displaying in storage info as - "SD Card 2nd Part." Not Mounted.
------------------------------------------
2nd try, with another breakup.
6GB - FAT32 - Primary
1.2GB - EXT2 - Primary
60MB - L.Swap - Primary
rest - Unallocated.
From Link2SD, I m able to see that sdext2 is mounted.
So for a demo purpose, I installed an application, The auto linking starts but get fails. Not able to create link /bla/bla/ - I/O error.
I did mount that location as RW with root explorer, no luck.
Please let me know what to do and how to resolve it.
Hi
What app did you use to format the sd card?
When i format my sd card using the cwm, i have to format the ext particion using easeus to ext2 particion, witch is the format that the stock rom suports, when i did that, i go to the app, select ext2 and reboot the device, that does the trick

Thanks for your reply, I used MiniTool.
Please suggest how/what to do..

Maybe you could try to partition it with CWM?

Link2SD automatically moves all files in SD. Its seems better that A2SD. Correct me if I m wrong.
Also, please tell how to flash recovery to CWM ? I downloaded 1 click recovery and installed the v5.0.2.8 , at the time of flashing, it display failed.
Please direct me from where you did that...
Please help someone, my phone memory is full now... i can also add person to my gtalk or y! messenger....
Do you have clockworkmod recovery installed?
If so, partition your SD from there, and if I'm correct, go to Link2sd, and choose ext4 as partition format... worked for me after numerous fails with other tools...
Edit: search for a tutorial to install CWM. That's how I installed it...

Apps in SD not working
I dunno if its relevant in this thread, but i couldnt find the answer anywhere else.
I partitioned my 8gb class 10 sd card and installed link2sd and all was fine. I created links for most of my apps and everything was fine, until I had to remove my sd card for some data transfer. Now my apps that were shifted previously are not working. For your information I use CM11 in my Galaxy ace.

The problem got solved, when I mounted the script again and did a reboot. When the phone boots, link2sd has to update all the links. There is an option available for this in the settings. Anyways thanks :good:

Please confirm that you had done an "eject" SD card from the MAC to unmount the SD card properly. This is the same as "Safe to Remove Hardware" for Windows. If not ejected (unmounted) properly, the next time you use it on another device, it may not be recognisable. If this is the case, simply insert the SD card back to the MAC and then eject it.
Otherwise, you can try re-initialise/re-formatting to FAT32 using software tools. Your phone recognises SD cards formatted in FAT32. If you format it with a MAC, it will not be in FAT32.
First, you can try formatting by using software for for SD cards, SDFormatter 4.0 - download from:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/
If that does not work, use a partition manager to re-partition and format to FAT32.
1. MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition - download from:
http://download.cnet.com/MiniTool-Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html
2. EaseUS Partition Master 9.2.2 - download from:
http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Partition-Master-Free-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html
Hope this helps.

If you have a Mac, use the Disk Utility app (you can find it in the Applications/Utilities folder) for format the SD card.
After doing that you should be able to read and write the card on the phone, Mac or Windows without problems:
1. On your Mac, connect the card
2. Open Mac HD on your desktop
3. Open Applications
4. Open Utilities
5. Open Disk Utility
6. On the left you should see the hard drive listed. It should show the drive size with a second indented line beneath it that shows the volume of the drive.
7. Click "Erase" at the top of the screen.
8. Select MS DOS(FAT) File System for the volume format option.
9. Change the name of the drive if desired.
Click "Erase" at the bottom of the screen. You will get a warning and will need to click "Erase" again.

TERMiNAL EMULATOR - Android

Hi goodafternoon! I just want to ask if im doing this right:
I want to install apk directly to my external SD Card because my internal only has 2gb of memory.
I tried searching for some tweaks and i found one using terminal emulator, i put the commands and it says 2[external].
Is it succesfull? And why there is a WARNiNG sign, im afraid of that.
up please

When i install link2sd, and after that can i install apk files into my external sd card? Sorry for my bad english.
The
Code:
[COLOR="RoyalBlue"][/COLOR]pm set-install-location
set to external sd works for apps that you can move directly to sd without **root, in phone's package manager. You get root and try rom toolbox or link2sd or there are several other apps to force move an app to sdcard

Yes mini partition is best option for making partition...
But u can also use link2sd without second partition...
But if you don't use second partition.. Then only little problem occurs..
That the apps u linked to sdcard card becomes unavailable when u connect ur device to pc.. Because sd card mounted on pc...
This can be overcome by using second partition....
But I think its not a big problem...
One thing you can also make partition using ur recovery..

FIRST MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR SDCARD...
Go to recovery > Choose advance option... > Sd partition..
Then select partition size which suits your needs...
(Make sure you choose ext4)
Great, i will try that man. Do partitioning sd card via recovery deletes all files of it? Thats why i need to backup it first?
