Software to edit partitions on SDCard?

Hey all, ages ago on my HTC Desire I followed a guide and partioned my SDCard with an EXT4 (i think?) partion for use with apps2sd I believe. Now, I'm using that SDcard in my Galaxy S2 and was wondering why the SD card was 1gb smaller than it should be an then I remembered about the partitioning.
Now obviously I can't view and edit these partitions in windows, but I can't remember the software I used before to create them in the first place. Can someone please help?

Minitool Partition wizard will do the trick. Or you can just use windows if you go through the computer management->storage->disk management.

Yeah I remembered I used minitool, but even that doesn't show me the other partitions when the sd card is in my galaxy s2, how can I convert those partitions back to fat32 seems neither windows nor minitool is detecting the partitions?

What is partition sd card for and how to use it I have a 16gb card and I try this in voodoo and it drop it to 10gb if its not need it how do I put it back to 16gb

some people put swap partitions on their sd cards to add to the physical memory, works ok at best and you have to have a script to enable it. Others put an ext4 partition to install programs to. Once again works ok, but Android has native installation to sd cards so it isn't as helpful as out once was.
Imho you are better off having one big fat 32 partition and not messing with all the rest.

wiping the card doesn't change the partitions.
partitioning the sd card just splits it up into separate filesystems. you choose the type of filesystem (fat, ntfs, ext, reiser, etc) you want for each partition.
the ROM does not go anywhere on the sd card.
like wolfepakt said, you can put linux swap space onto a partition on the sd card, but for the sk4g i don't feel it's necessary. i think it was common to have on the g1, though.
i'm not completely clear why people use ext partitions on their sd cards. with ext3 and ext4, there's journaling, so i think there's added robustness against file corruption or whatever. i'm not clear on speed of ext vs fat, though. i think ext4 is faster than ext3, so the question would be fat32 vs ext4.
you can partition your card via cwm, but for some reason you can't choose 0 for your ext size, which is annoying. maybe that's only with the red cwm, though, which is what i have. the other thing you could do is use a card reader and plug it into your computer, which i assume runs windows, and then partition it via the disk manager: http://www.d-silence.com/feature.php?id=246

sd card - not working

hi there
i have rooted my device and
after that I install the jaggy rom.
now I have the problem:
my explorer don't find my sd card
my pc don-t find the sd card over usb
but I can install zip from sdcard!
whats the problem?? please help me, I tried everything but nothing works.

Try inserting it in a NON smartphone and see if it recognises....even a linux laptop is worth a try....ATB :good:

okey the card is recognized without the smartphone...
now I removed the ext4 partition and format it again (fat32)
it works, my phone found the sd card
but now I don't have a ext4 partition... do i need one??

Only if you want to remove problems like low internal memory and want to use A2SD

My phone doesn't detect it either.
at start it gives small card with ! mark.
I tried formatting the card wholly with fat32,
I even tried making different partitions fat32+ext4.
In both ways my phone doesn't detect the memory card.
But when I do the update in recovery mode it updates through sd card.
My memory card is perfectly working on PC and other devices.

Try using the partition sd card option in recovery if you want to use Link2SD, A2SD or S2E.

Guys, do the cards ext2 or 3 , not 4. Don't know why but...... It worked for me. And if you partition them, make both partitions primary.

Thank you very much..I had the same problem, I formatted my SD card to ext3,fat32 and a swap partition and Wolla..its working fine:victory:.

There are some issues with ext4 partitions.
ext4 partition are said to be better but they might have some problems.
So if you encounter any, format it completely and delete all partitions. Using your phone recovery to make partition would be better.
Sometimes your second partition(i.e. sd-ext) is not detected by your recovery, and your main fat32 is works fine. Well that happened with me and i searched for solutions for long time. But did get any.
Later i fixed it by flashing the last cwm recovery with which the sd-ext partition was getting detected. Seems like the new version of recovery was the problem. Or something else, I don't know.

[Q] Link2SD Problem

After searching a lot here and other place, I didn't find the solution of my problem.
I have 8gb card.
1st break up
6GB - FAT32 - Primary
rest - FAT32 - Primary.
Link2SD is not able to mount.
Displaying in storage info as - "SD Card 2nd Part." Not Mounted.
------------------------------------------
2nd try, with another breakup.
6GB - FAT32 - Primary
1.2GB - EXT2 - Primary
60MB - L.Swap - Primary
rest - Unallocated.
From Link2SD, I m able to see that sdext2 is mounted.
So for a demo purpose, I installed an application, The auto linking starts but get fails. Not able to create link /bla/bla/ - I/O error.
I did mount that location as RW with root explorer, no luck.
Please let me know what to do and how to resolve it.

What app did you use to format the sd card?
When i format my sd card using the cwm, i have to format the ext particion using easeus to ext2 particion, witch is the format that the stock rom suports, when i did that, i go to the app, select ext2 and reboot the device, that does the trick

I partitioned my sd with CWM and used A2SD, and it works fine.
Maybe you could try to partition it with CWM?

Link2SD automatically moves all files in SD. Its seems better that A2SD. Correct me if I m wrong.
Also, please tell how to flash recovery to CWM ? I downloaded 1 click recovery and installed the v5.0.2.8 , at the time of flashing, it display failed.
Please direct me from where you did that...

Do you have clockworkmod recovery installed?
If so, partition your SD from there, and if I'm correct, go to Link2sd, and choose ext4 as partition format... worked for me after numerous fails with other tools...
Edit: search for a tutorial to install CWM. That's how I installed it...

Apps in SD not working
I dunno if its relevant in this thread, but i couldnt find the answer anywhere else.
I partitioned my 8gb class 10 sd card and installed link2sd and all was fine. I created links for most of my apps and everything was fine, until I had to remove my sd card for some data transfer. Now my apps that were shifted previously are not working. For your information I use CM11 in my Galaxy ace.

Seems like you have to reinstall them, dunno why but removing the card might have had created problems.

The problem got solved, when I mounted the script again and did a reboot. When the phone boots, link2sd has to update all the links. There is an option available for this in the settings. Anyways thanks :good:

[Q] Is fat32 the only filesystem supported for microsd?

I tried formatting to ext4 and the phone did not recognize the card. Just wondered if anyone else had sucessfully tried any other filesystems?
Right now 64GB microsd's seem to be the best deal and name brand versions can be found as cheap as $20-25 where 128gb cards will still cost you $70+ and usually involve rebates at the lower end prices.

Exfat and fat32. I have mine formatted to fat32.

Applications that can write to SD card can only write to a SD card format to FAT 32. The system file manager can write to Exfat, but that's it.

Still not all apps will have permissions. I can't get Utorrent to save to the ext sd for anything

Syncthing is the same way...you should still be able to use the kitkat workaround though which is to save your files to a folder under the android\data\<appname> folder on the sdcard since each app has access to it's own data area.

I never knew about this workaround. So i create the folders on my ext sd card?

camera 360 can't use it to save, there's no option to choose applications installation on sdcard ect.
had to use link2sd to move almost all my apps without error

It can be used if you are rooted...requires adding a line to platform.xml. If you find the thread about what camera software to use I posted some instructions on how to fix it where 3rd party's can use the external sd...or you can google on "platform.xml android external sd".

thx i used the goold old sdfix app. it's normally for kitkat and we have to use some trick like that on lollipop bad alcatel bad

Blame google, not Alcatel. The external sd card issue is due to Lollipop..
That app makes the same change...you can uninstall it after it modifies the file. Simpler for me to just edit the file and push the change.

I'm on exfat on a 64gb. Works fine.

The 200gb I had in my g3 worked just fine.
Just realized the card cost more than this phone...

My 32 gb HDSC card came formatted with FAT32. I preferred ExFAT, so I reformatted the card using Disk Utility on my Mac. The Icon 3 didn't recognize it until I reformatted back to FAT32. Maybe I should have tried formatting it on a Windows machine. I may try a 64 GB HDXC card that probably comes formatted with ExFAT.

Really not much of a benefit to exfat over fat32...especially if you set cluster size when formatting. I also read about some folks having permission issues writing to the exfat till they reformatted. The samsung 128GB I put in my idol3 worked like a champ.

NooB....Thank Google lollypop for sdcard problems. U can write to sdcard with some apps not all if the code is written for this.

It seems TWRP doesn't recognise exfat partitions if the sdcard doesn't contain a partition table (GPT works, I haven't tried old-style msdos partition table).
This could be partly explained by the fact that, without a partition table, the external sdcard is called /dev/block/mmcblk1 instead of /dev/block/mmcblk1p1
To put it another way, if you want your sd card to be both readable when the phone is normally booted AND when it's booted into TWRP, you have to make a GPT table on the sdcard, and create an exfat partition inside.
=> In windows, it just fell into place after messing around with it for a bit. Your mileage will vary, depending on if you had an msdos partition table, a pre-existing GPT partition table (easiest) or no partition table at all. I gave up trying to figure it out.
=> Under TWRP adb shell, using the image containing gdisk, I did it this way (data-destructive operation !) :
- Use gdisk to create a new GPT table on /dev/block/mmcblk1 (or /dev/sdX outside from adb shell)
- Also with gdisk, create a new partition (types 8300 or 0700 should do) on the device targeted previously
- Then, exit gdisk and use "mkfs.exfat -n extsd /dev/block/mmcblk1p1" (or /dev/sdX1 if you didn't do it from TWRP adb shell) to reformat the partition created previously to exfat format.
However => do NOT use mkfs.exfat command on the /dev/block/mmcblk1 device (or /dev/sdX), else you'll have to redo step 1 again
Also, under adb shell, make sure you don't accidentally wipe /dev/block/mmcblk0 device, else you'll brick your phone !

Or just keep it formatted as fat32 and skip the above which was my choice.

Just my two cents - why would you want to format SD to ext4? Journaling filesystems don't work very well with flash drives, cells die much quicker.
