some people put swap partitions on their sd cards to add to the physical memory, works ok at best and you have to have a script to enable it. Others put an ext4 partition to install programs to. Once again works ok, but Android has native installation to sd cards so it isn't as helpful as out once was.
Imho you are better off having one big fat 32 partition and not messing with all the rest.

wipe the sd card i think

wiping the card doesn't change the partitions.
partitioning the sd card just splits it up into separate filesystems. you choose the type of filesystem (fat, ntfs, ext, reiser, etc) you want for each partition.
the ROM does not go anywhere on the sd card.
like wolfepakt said, you can put linux swap space onto a partition on the sd card, but for the sk4g i don't feel it's necessary. i think it was common to have on the g1, though.
i'm not completely clear why people use ext partitions on their sd cards. with ext3 and ext4, there's journaling, so i think there's added robustness against file corruption or whatever. i'm not clear on speed of ext vs fat, though. i think ext4 is faster than ext3, so the question would be fat32 vs ext4.
you can partition your card via cwm, but for some reason you can't choose 0 for your ext size, which is annoying. maybe that's only with the red cwm, though, which is what i have. the other thing you could do is use a card reader and plug it into your computer, which i assume runs windows, and then partition it via the disk manager: http://www.d-silence.com/feature.php?id=246

It's used to put apps on when using a low memory device also. IE: The G1, Mytouch 32b

Hi all.
I have created an ext2 partition on my sdcard it is workinghone now shows 198mb of rom which is about 90mb higher than the phone's internal memory. BUT, my ext2 partition is nearly 300mb. I'm completely baffled by why this has happened since it happens on every rom I try: miui, ice and fire, cm7,froyomod...
I thought I would like to put this post here because I'm certain that other people may have similar issues.
Hope someone can help

Phone is always showing how much internal memory it has. It will not show you space of your ext partition on sd card. Don't worry about it, it's normal.
You can check your free space of ext partition by typing in terminal 'df -h', line with '/sd-ext' will be your ext partition.
android roms will not show you your ext partition size.Custom roms might. To see your partition and the folders,i use root explorer.Great app

I can see what you mean when u say that the phone doesn't always show all of the ext2 because in open recovery it shows how much ext2 is left but since the phone doesn't recognise the internal memory I can't install more apps. It just says not enuff internal memory.
Also on my friends htc desire he has a 1gb ext3 partition and on his phone it shows that he has 1gb internal memory.
On a slightly unrlated subject do u know of any build.prop fixes to show all market apps on the milestone (I'm using iceandfire 2.8 if that makess a difference)
Thanks for the help so far

Cache and Gmail takes up internal storage space
U might have moved all your apps to SD or Ext 2/3/4 but what about caches for your application....the cache is taking up your internal storage space.
Also what about Gmail? I supposed Gmail is also using the internal storage space to store your emails.
Actually I just realised something. On my 1st post I had 30mb free. Now I have 80mb internal storage and I haven't done anything either my phone is automatically moving app to SD or they are being transferred to my ext2 partition

[Q] Internal storage (non-sd card) of the G2x - how big it is?

Hi
I am coming from the Vibrant. There, I never used my own SD CARD. I always used the phone's storage. It was always fine.
But now I just flashed to CM and when I wanted to take a pic, it said "please insert SD card before ...."
huh? does the G2x doesn't have enough space - even for ONE picture?
I am sure I am missing something here
Thank you!!!

Internal memory is 8gb but free space is roughly 5.2 gbs.
You need to have an external SD card with the way cm7 is formatted the internal SD card is mounted as mnt/emmc.
Not sure if you can change your download folder to mnt/emmc as I never have tried.
There is I believe if I recall correctly a flash that changes the internal memory card from emmc to reg browse the threads in dev you'll surely find it there

There's an option in cyanogenmod settings>application
That does that for you. Called use internal storage or something. Tap it and reboot.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
cyanogenmod settings -> application -> use internal storage
check this, reboot, and the internal storage should be mounted on /sdcard and /mnt/sdcard, while external sd card (if exists) will be mounted on /mnt/emmc
There is a 2GB for apps if I am not mistaken.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
roughly 1.5gb for apps, with link2sd that 1.5gb is very generous since only some cache files are stored on internal and everything else being linked to the ext partition on sdcard. I have over 450+ apps/games on my phone atm using link2sd and reccomend it to anyone else who also likes installing tons of apps.

meaning what? swap and ext4?
swap reduces your sd battery life, but it's said that it's not very noticeable, and it's needed with sense 3.5
ext4 just adds space for apps on sdcard as if they were on phone's rom
I mean swap, sorry.
What do you mean with reduce? And how can i swap my sdcard? Can you post me a thread please ? )

I just partitioned my MicroSD card with MiniTool.
First Partition: FAT
Second Partition: Ext2
My laptop recognizes the card through card reader and I can see the two partitions in MiniTool, but my phone (HTC Explorer) does not recognize it. Any suggestions?
Well how are you checking if your phone sees it. Some roms can't use sd2ext. Take a good file explorer like root explorer ans see if there's a folder names sd-ext

I simply use the phone's recovery (in my case 4EXT) , which will walk me thru everything, I didn't bother with a swap partition but rather a dataswap option (specific to my rom), and a 2GB sd-ext (Again supported by default on my rom). And used 4EXT to convert all my internal file systems to ext4 filetype instead of ext3 (again my rom supports it, but not all roms do).
Essentially you can partition SD and most everything else via ClockworkMod or 4EXT.
PS: Generally sd-ext should be the FIRST partition. (or second in the case of swap, sd-ext and fat32), since some Roms will not automatically recognize it if not placed in that order. thus another reason to do it via recovery.
Use the recovery on your phone to partition your SD card then plug your SD card into a Linux box and check to see if it's EXT4 using Gparted.
how to get sd-ext before fat32 in 4ext?

I'm running mimicry-1.4.0, 4ext touch, same as you. When I ask it to partition my new, 16gig, class 10 card, it asks:
size of first sd-ext, to which I reply 2048
size of second sf-ext, to which I reply skip
size of swap, which I also skip,
and then it does the remainder as fat32.
BUT...the fat partition is at the beginning of the card...not the order the app asked for my input...and I don't see how to change them.
Maybe not being first is okay with mimicry?
thanks for your help,
p-d
ps all my file systems are ext4 on the phone itself.

Older s2e may need a specific partition order but both clockwork and 4ext arrange in this order, and the enabler script in my signature needs no apps and works fine with mimicry.

Me too I had looooooooooooots of doubts but after I partitioned it today regretted every moment without ext!!!!!!
So I partitioned it through CWM 256 ext and 32 swap and when using link2sd it's exactly like apps are in /data(widgets...)
I don't know about risks coz I didn't face any
PM me for any question I'm ready to help!
I too have a doubt when I partitioning my SD card all my data in it will gonna erase
Sent from my LG-P500 using Tapatalk 2
Yes, partitioning your SD card will format it and erase everything on it, so back it up first.
The point of an ext partition is to extend the internal memory, so you can load it up with apps and not run out of internal storage. This comes in handy on the ov which has very little internal memory to begin with. With an ext partition, you can use apps like link2sd to create symbolic links to your apps, so they can be on the sd card, but the "think" they are on the internal. This way you can move apps that can't be normally moved to the sd, or use widgets, which need to be on the internal memory. I, however like cronmod's ext scripts. They can be put in the init.d of some roms, and they will move your data partition, and/or dalvik, and/or data/apps to the ext. That way you don't have to manage apps like with link2sd. In a sense, it's like adding straight to the internal memory.
To partition your sd card, the easiest thing is to do it from a custom recovery. You won't get to choose the filesystem, but you can choose the size of the ext partition and swap. Keep swap at zero, as most phones here won't use it. Set your ext partition to ~10% of the size of the sd card.
If you want a different filesystem than your recovery gives you, you can use the minitool partition wizard on your pc with a card reader:

Is swap partition really helpful for low ram devices and O1??
Do we need to use any script to use of swap memory or is it done automatically??!
Edit: Good info about swap partition.
hope this can help you!

Actually swap is not needed for o1.Even on ics i have about 150-200 mb of free ram most of the time, and if u make swap partition u'll get even more free ram.But remember unused ram or free ram is nothing but waste of ram in linux, unlike windows.

Sd card, for ram, and regular storage?

I've been starting to look into adding ram to one of my devices by using an sd card. But, can you still use the rest of the sd card as regular storage at the same time? I keep all of my photos on my external, and ringtones, notifications, many things.
I'd love to figure out dedicating part of an sd card as ram, while still using the rest of it as regular storage
I looked around a bit, and I've seen YouTube tutorials about using sd as memory... But none mentioned using as regular storage at the same time.
Anyone more experienced who could share further info would be awesome or if there's some place better I should be reading, feel free to share that link with me too

Still need help with this... As far as my research shows, you can only see your sd card within your phone and can't use an sd card reader with your sd card as windows won't see it.
Is there some way to allow windows to see it as well as having it partitioned for ram??
I'd really really appreciate the help on this!!
If the first partition is fat32/exfat, both android & windows will recognize it. The 2nd partition can be the swap.

Thanks for the reply
I did try that idea, but to put it into the phone, at least the rohesoft test program only saw the partition meant for storage. In this case I used a 16 gig (which is actually about 14 gig), I decided to set aside 2 gig for the swap, but that test program only saw the regular storage partition of about 12 gigs. How would I set it so that the ram program will see the second 2 gig partition as well? I tried them both as fat32, is that a bad plan?
I have a new observation... My phone, running 4.0.4 does not see any swap files. My tablet running 5.1.1 does see swap files, using the exact same sd card. First as fat 32 and tried 2nd as ext4. Is there another option that will work for ice cream sandwich??
I haven't tried it yet but would ICS see ext3 or ext2 better?
Officially can't get my phone to see the other partition at all!! I can get swapper to create a swap file on the *same* partition as I want to use for media only!! I thought the whole point was that only part of your card was dedicated to ram use?
To go into recovery and go into mounts and storage, it shows unmount sdcard, which means it is already currently mounted. That was why I thought maybe my tablet could see a swap partition but my phone could not. That theory is garbage now as they're both mounted. I can't even manually create a swap file on the 2nd partition in my pc cuz the computer won't see it except for in the mini tool !
I'm getting so frustrated. I'm so afraid to do so unpartitioned and run the risk of files like irreplaceable pictures deleting themselves in favor of ram space.
Is this just plain not possible??? Help....
I can't even see the ext3 in es file explorer, or even as a choice to have the roesoft tool manually create/test a swap file there
I'm running out of ideas that I have any clue at all of what to do. Could *really* use the help....
