Ext2/3/4 issues (space not fully showing up) - Motorola Milestone Android Development

Hi all.
I have created an ext2 partition on my sdcard it is workinghone now shows 198mb of rom which is about 90mb higher than the phone's internal memory. BUT, my ext2 partition is nearly 300mb. I'm completely baffled by why this has happened since it happens on every rom I try: miui, ice and fire, cm7,froyomod...
I thought I would like to put this post here because I'm certain that other people may have similar issues.
Hope someone can help
Charlie

P.S I tried all the different types of ext like ext2,3 and 4 but I get the same result no matter how big the partition is

Phone is always showing how much internal memory it has. It will not show you space of your ext partition on sd card. Don't worry about it, it's normal.
You can check your free space of ext partition by typing in terminal 'df -h', line with '/sd-ext' will be your ext partition.

android roms will not show you your ext partition size.Custom roms might. To see your partition and the folders,i use root explorer.Great app

I can see what you mean when u say that the phone doesn't always show all of the ext2 because in open recovery it shows how much ext2 is left but since the phone doesn't recognise the internal memory I can't install more apps. It just says not enuff internal memory.
Also on my friends htc desire he has a 1gb ext3 partition and on his phone it shows that he has 1gb internal memory.
On a slightly unrlated subject do u know of any build.prop fixes to show all market apps on the milestone (I'm using iceandfire 2.8 if that makess a difference)
Thanks for the help so far

Cache and Gmail takes up internal storage space
U might have moved all your apps to SD or Ext 2/3/4 but what about caches for your application....the cache is taking up your internal storage space.
Also what about Gmail? I supposed Gmail is also using the internal storage space to store your emails.

Actually I just realised something. On my 1st post I had 30mb free. Now I have 80mb internal storage and I haven't done anything either my phone is automatically moving app to SD or they are being transferred to my ext2 partition

Internal storage partition

Is there a way similar to how the g1 had the MTD partitions to make the g2x have the full 6gb+ used as the internal storage(compared to the 1.5gb we get normally) Theres got to be a tool or a dev that knows how to hex edit or run some kind of script that can bind the internal/inbuiltsdcard space into just one partition.
Why would you want that?
What's the benefits of that?

uh.... who doesn't like more internal storage for their phones? I already have an external 16gb sdcard so the 5gb is wasted space for me and many others!
So you're saying you want a 100+ apps on your phone so you can come onto XDA and complain how your phone is slow?

Bunch of idiots i swear, don't think either of you are devs for the g2x so GTFO!
It would be cool having that. So much space...
Well it's not as much as i'd prefer in my smartphone(16gb should be the norm in all smartphones by now for internal storage) but 6gb>1.5gb anyday.
Just hoping someone knows how to do this for the people that actually could use more space. I don't care if you think 1gb of storage is enough for you(thats nice now go away) this is a request!

isn't that extra 5.5GB mounted on /mnt/emmc ? It is for me.

Yes it is, mounted as an internal type sdcard but it's not the same as having just the 6 or 7gb of INTERNAL storage for apps and games. As of right now 1.5 is available and that 5gb you speak of being used as a internal sdcard doesn't matter when that 1.5gb runs out of space
So what happens when the app space is full?

LOL common sense man....
Running out of space means you can't install any more apps/games whatever else to your phone. Sure you can install SOME apps/games to external or internal sdcard but that main 1.5gb of storage is sill gonna run out faster then the 6gb sdcard that is partitioned on our phones.
Why can't people understand what i'm saying? This mod, if possible would only make our phones better by improving internal storage space from 1.5gb to around 7gb or more for any app or game you want to install. Most people prefer using their name brand sdcard for storing music/movies/porn/whatever else and prefer installing all apps to internal partition so everything runs smoother/faster.
Can you partition the internal memory (the 5 gigs to ext3-4)?? There is an app on marker called s2e that uses the partitioned space in a sdcard as app storage, maybe it can see the internal space as a partitioned sd card and move apps there.. just a thought.

Ya i'm aware of that program S2E but it's only available for CM7 and i don't think it's possibl to partition the internal 5gb sdcard builtin the g2x...
Link2sd is the solution until a dev can figure the way to bind 1.5gb internal storage to the internal 5.5 sdcard. Link2sd is incredibly stable and allows moving all user apps to ext partition on external sdcard including dalvik cache and market links.
Also unlike s2e it will work for any rom and not just cm7!
I am running faux nexus aosp 1.3.1 rom with his DS .42 kernel and getting great battery life performance.

Heres proof how great link2sd works, already installed 350+ apps/games to my ext partition on sdcard and the phone is still running buttery smooth and have over 1gb+ left on internal. This would not be possible with just the in built apps2sd feature since that won't allow dalvik cache or some apps or games to install to sdcard.
As you can all see 35 apps on each page for the app drawer times 11 pages so far = 385 & i still go tplenty more to install with no worries of running out of space for a long while. Problem solved , for now lol

Naw it's really simple to use, you just need to partition your sdcard thru cwm. You should def make a nand backup and full wipe(it's not something you can do without being prepared first as partitioning your sdcard wipes all data off of it)
Other then that once you link any apps you want to sd-ext it will ask you to quick reboot so it can mount the partition you made on sdxard for those apps to be seen and used.

Any progress on this yet? I was thinking the same. Wish it was easy to expand the 1.5gb. Since I have 32gb external sd, it's best to have most of internal 8gb for app storage. I hate the constant message of low internal storage when install new app or even just app update. app2sd is ok but not very good.
I remember doing repartition for the nook color, thanks to DeanGibson who created a flashable zip.

Maybe someone here with the knowledge can edit the code for G2x

[Q] Internal storage (non-sd card) of the G2x - how big it is?

Hi
I am coming from the Vibrant. There, I never used my own SD CARD. I always used the phone's storage. It was always fine.
But now I just flashed to CM and when I wanted to take a pic, it said "please insert SD card before ...."
huh? does the G2x doesn't have enough space - even for ONE picture?
I am sure I am missing something here
Thank you!!!

Internal memory is 8gb but free space is roughly 5.2 gbs.
You need to have an external SD card with the way cm7 is formatted the internal SD card is mounted as mnt/emmc.
Not sure if you can change your download folder to mnt/emmc as I never have tried.
There is I believe if I recall correctly a flash that changes the internal memory card from emmc to reg browse the threads in dev you'll surely find it there

There's an option in cyanogenmod settings>application
That does that for you. Called use internal storage or something. Tap it and reboot.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
cyanogenmod settings -> application -> use internal storage
check this, reboot, and the internal storage should be mounted on /sdcard and /mnt/sdcard, while external sd card (if exists) will be mounted on /mnt/emmc
There is a 2GB for apps if I am not mistaken.

roughly 1.5gb for apps, with link2sd that 1.5gb is very generous since only some cache files are stored on internal and everything else being linked to the ext partition on sdcard. I have over 450+ apps/games on my phone atm using link2sd and reccomend it to anyone else who also likes installing tons of apps.

Cyanogenmod : All apps on SD card but less internal memory than with stock?

Hello
I have installed CyanogenMod 7 on my Galaxy Ace then downloaded all the apps I had when I was using the stock ROM. Then, I moved all the apps one by one to the SD card (which I could not do with the stock ROM) and yet I have LESS internal memory that I used to have.
Why? What can I do?
Thanks
There are more advanced options, but to start out you might want to try clearing all app caches.
If that still doesn't free up enough space, you can try out link2sd

I use Link2sd clean all app caches with one click!
Thanks to both of you. I downloaded Link2SD and emptied all the apps cache but it was only a total of 1.14MB. So that won't do it.
What is the "Delvik Cache"? Could that help?
Clearing the dalvik cache does nothing, as Android will simply rebuild it after a reboot.
However, since you've installed link2sd, you might as well use its primary function: to move apps to an SD card partition
Sent from my MB508 using xda premium
Ok so I've managed to move all apps to the SD card with link2sd instead of the built in way and gained a little space (about 10 MB). I guess that's the best I can have for now :S
Moving apps to the SD card won't really free up space. There is a designated amount of unusable memory specifically for apps. On some phones it is as much as 2GB. So even if you have ZERO apps, that 2gb will still not be available. You are actually doing more harm than good. The apps you move to your SD card will not run as well.
im also noob on this kind of matter so i thanks people who helped coz i too have a CM7 on my xperia x10 mini pro with low internal memory
what i did to solve the low memory is that i made a partition on my sd card which is sd-ext4 and activated A2SD on Settings>CMsettings>performance>a2sd
they say it tricked my phone of having more internal memory than its actual size, and every time i install apps it automatically gets in my SD
Is that good?

[Q] Re-partition SD card with CM10?

I see that our lovely One S's 16Gb sdcard is partitioned that only about 9.98Gb space is usable. Since I dumped the original Sense software on the first day and living on CM10 nightlies since then, is it possible to repartition the sdcard to use more space for apps+data?
Only with S-OFF AFAIK.

That would require s-off. But even then it is not to be taken lightly.
The emmc partition layout is such that you have 10GB as your sdcard and 2.5GB for apps and data. If you install apps to 'sdcard' or 'phone storage', it comes out of the 10GB. If you install to internal storage, it comes out of the 2.5GB. In my experience, that 2.5G for apps is plenty, so always install all apps to internal storage, so as to keep as much as possible of the 10GB for myself.. System partition is 1.7GB so there is not even that much to be gained.
For ppl who dont install crazy amount of app, that 2.5g partition is just a big waste.
id rather use it to store photos and music.
dont know why htc even bothered to make partition like this. its stupid.

So... root the phone and create a new folder in /data/ and/or /system/ and mount it then.

Me too I had looooooooooooots of doubts but after I partitioned it today regretted every moment without ext!!!!!!
So I partitioned it through CWM 256 ext and 32 swap and when using link2sd it's exactly like apps are in /data(widgets...)
I don't know about risks coz I didn't face any
PM me for any question I'm ready to help!
I too have a doubt when I partitioning my SD card all my data in it will gonna erase

Yes, partitioning your SD card will format it and erase everything on it, so back it up first.
The point of an ext partition is to extend the internal memory, so you can load it up with apps and not run out of internal storage. This comes in handy on the ov which has very little internal memory to begin with. With an ext partition, you can use apps like link2sd to create symbolic links to your apps, so they can be on the sd card, but the "think" they are on the internal. This way you can move apps that can't be normally moved to the sd, or use widgets, which need to be on the internal memory. I, however like cronmod's ext scripts. They can be put in the init.d of some roms, and they will move your data partition, and/or dalvik, and/or data/apps to the ext. That way you don't have to manage apps like with link2sd. In a sense, it's like adding straight to the internal memory.
To partition your sd card, the easiest thing is to do it from a custom recovery. You won't get to choose the filesystem, but you can choose the size of the ext partition and swap. Keep swap at zero, as most phones here won't use it. Set your ext partition to ~10% of the size of the sd card.
If you want a different filesystem than your recovery gives you, you can use the minitool partition wizard on your pc with a card reader:
http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html

Actually swap is not needed for o1.Even on ics i have about 150-200 mb of free ram most of the time, and if u make swap partition u'll get even more free ram.But remember unused ram or free ram is nothing but waste of ram in linux, unlike windows.
