Hey all, I am thinking of getting either the HD2 or a nexus one subsidized, since thats all I can afford. I will decide on the 30th, but I am stuck on which device to get.
HD2- awesome, big screen slick and clean, WM (Yes I like WM )
Price - 100 at amazon
Nexus One - Froyo, small slick and nice in the hands. Android
Price - 180 at Google.
Which one should I get? Would either of these require a credit check with online purchase?

I am also a WM lover so no Android for me at least in 2 years...
Its out of stock, but I will provide links when its up, I still have till the 30th, or the 1st. So that's plenty of time. It is $130 on wirefly. These are both T-Mobile USA versions.
The only reason I am second guessing the Leo is because of the splurge of major developer support for the Nexus One. Lots of things are going to it while WM is left in the cold dark. I know I would rather have WM but that's still stuck in my mind.

I think amazon is pretty reputable. I just got my HD2 YESTERDAY. Awesome device, the screen isn't as big as you think it might be though. It's really very pocketable. No complaints, at all. Make sure the first thing you install is cookies home tab mod though.
Hardware wise, I would prefer the HTC HD2. But, I personally prefer Android over Winmo.

I think I am gonna go with the HD2. Since its cheaper, but idk how I am going to do that credit check thing.
For me it came down to ugly phone vs. Windows Mobile.
Fortunately I like Windows Mobile.
while looking for a gift for my wife, I played with the nexus one, I bought the HD2. Live wallpaper is cool but the HD2 is so much better in terms of being able to customize it and what was a plus for us was that we were already familiar with the user interface.
Does amazon require a deposit, when you do the credit check? What is the maximum amount you will have to pay?

Yeah, which is getting out of hand (at least, for me). I've had my Slingbox for several years and I've switched mobile platforms during that time. No discount and my licenses go to waste. I'm guessing I'm up to at least $100 in just Slingbox player (WinMo, iPhone, etc.).
It wouldn't bother me, since I do use the app, but I'm guessing they're about to milk me another time when they launch the iPad app. There's no sign they will opt for universal app. Second, their follow up support sucks. They're lucky they have such a useful product because their player development cycle (waaay too long), licensing scheme ("buy the hardware and never pay" except for our software) and support isn't winning a single award.
edit: OH, and another thing... their ridiculous ability to charge $30 for software that they aren't willing to state whether it will work with my Slingbox AV. I get to roll the dice and maybe one day it will go dark.
Been waiting for this app also. Besides the $30 cost there will be nothing better for live streaming from your tv. Had it for windows mobile and iphone. Watched directv all over town. This is the best $30 you can spend. Sucked when they shutdown the sling community forums and opened up the new "staff driven" support forums. Sling community was great and helped a lot of people.

I wonder if you would be able to transfer the iphone to ipad? I am sure this won't work to transfer to android though.

I'm digging into their forum/answers site and it looks like my old, old Windows Mobile license can transfer so long as the Android player is a trial version that accepts licenses. The iPhone app is a different beast than their usual software since Apple has complete control over the distribution of the app. I guess I learned tonight that it's quite possible to transfer from WinMo to Blackberry to Symbian. Your license is only active on one install.
I'm crossing my fingers they took this into consideration.

more then likely the older models work perfectly well, but they can sell the solo and pro's for a lot more then a tuner or an AV. It probably all about money. Their site says "tuner and AV is not supported. It is highly recommended to get the newer slingboxs" This is what it said for the iphone moblie app.

I have 3 slingboxes at work, an original, pro (i think next model after the original) and a new HD one. Only the HD one works. The iphone version supports all three. The prices on these players is wacked. I don't mind paying but jeez. Buy a $30 app just to find out I need to buy like $600 worth of new boxes. Good looking out Google with the 24 hour refund period.

I also think that having to buy the app at full price if you already are a slingbox owner is ridiculous!!! At least give current owners a discount or something!! And it's not like the app is cheap, $30 is type expensive just for the app...no??

CorePlayer has supposedly been demoed at CES and Core is at the stage now where they're just "Working on the Market LVL" (whatever that is) and fixing some bugs. It'll certainly not be a free app, and probably quiet expensive, (The existing versions are $29.99!) but if you have a look at their site you can see that it supports pretty much everything imaginable (ala VLC really).
Given the high price, the app is going to need to be a lot better than VPlayer etc, and realistically no matter how good it is, I'm not paying that much for a video player app. It's possible that the Apple & Android versions may be more realistically priced seeing as there _is_ good competition on those platforms (i.e VLC, VPlayer/Rockplayer, Galaxy tab's native player even).
They've been saying "soon" for several months, maybe now they've supposedly demoed the product (although no one seems to have actually seen it), it won't be far off.
It's always good to have options.
I wouldn't worry too much about the pricing:-
1. PC versions are always more expensive than App only.
2. To remain competitive Coreplayer will have to keep their pricing 'realistic'.
My guess is we shall see this title hitting the App store for something around the $9.99 mark.
An issue will be with the H.264 codec, which Google are in the news with at the moment.

I'm not too excited about this. Every time i did try a CorePlayer, the results sucked!
Might be because it had never been too.... paid, but not being able to play mp3 or h264 in the Mac version? lol.
And file support varies hugely depending on the platform, the big one is just for Windows, everything else is crippled.
But maybe they'll surprise me, who knows!

It is possible to build a (free) version of VLC for Android now and a proper release of it shouldn't be far off, so Core's app is going to have to be both very good and very cheap, or they're not going to get very far.
That said, they're releasing it for iOS as well which already has VLC, so it'll be interesting to see what their gameplan is. VLC isn't exactly the most attractive application, so maybe they'll have a fantastic UI.

Agreed..... Attractive UI or not, Coreplayer as good as it's name has previously made it is up amongst some serious competition.
They are going to have to forget their previous popularity on the territory they once used to hold well and be realistic on pricing if they desire to attain their status.
Having to pay for codec's is one thing but not at the expense of making you financially unpopular.
core player has been around since winmo 5.5 days and it was even on palm os and no i dont mean web os. It was the ONLY player for it back then but then they started charging an arm leg and one other part for it on winmo. why would u pay 30$ for it if you can get rock player at 10 which supports the exact same thing
I think coreplayer will have more codec support when it is released, however..... corecodec have consistently misled its customer for years on when something is going to be released and what development will continue once released.
I paid that silly sum for coreplayer winmo6 as it stated on their website that "hardware encoding for MSM chipsets was coming soon". I had a touch HD (HD1) so the thought of being able to play all my ripped dvd on my little phone was very appealing.
They then promised more support with Version "2" and I am sure people bought version 1 thinking 2 was near to release as this was posted a number of times on their website forums. None of this happened.
We are now back to square one with Android, they have been working on this for more than 18 months and have very little to show for it in that if this pans out like their other efforts it will probably never happen and be 12 months behind everything else when they are supposed to be innovating.
Dont hold your breath, stick with Rockplayer.

But what is the official version of a Pre plus has? I am wondering whether I should buy a pre plus or considering newer model.
I have a Verizon Pre Plus. The most recent updated version on mine is Palm WebOS 1.4.5.
Of all of the phones I've owned, or played with, WebOS is the best and most intuitive - even better than iOS. However, Palm/HP needs to get over the clunky slider hardware.
I love my Pre. I was and still am a Win Mo diehard. Absolutely hated Android, Win7, iOS, and Blackberry. After picking up my pre I haven't looked elsewhere.
Even though it has many shortfalls, WebOS is SUPREMELY easy to use. It just feels so elegant and polished. Never once has my phone froze, stuttered, or slowed down during use. Multitasking is unrivalled.
With HP pushing new stuff out in the summer, and WebOS on PC shortly after. 2011 is going to be big with WebOS

Look, I love webOS- I really do. It's a great mobile operating system and is really underrated and I want to see it thrive. But I've had a Pre Plus for year now, and while I love webOS, I can't stand the hardware. The screen is small, the processor is slow (but there's always overclocking ), the battery life is bad, and it's got a terrible build quality- I'm on my 5th Pre at least. It could be more, I've lost count. But when I went to Palm Developer Day in November 2010, I got a free Pre 2, as did everyone else who went. The Pre 2 was an awesome phone. I loved it, and I'd recommend you buy it if you're interested in webOS. It's got a much better build quality and is much faster than the Pre Plus, and it comes with webOS 2.0 out of the box. Unfortunately, my Pre 2 was run over (I'm kinda careless as you can tell) and no longer works, but for the 3 or so months that I had it, I loved it. It was a great phone, and I highly recommend it. You can get the unlocked GSM version and put whatever SIM you like in it (you'll get AT&T 3G, but not T-Mobile 3G, sorry) and you'll be good to go, or you can buy the Verizon version. Either way, the Pre2 is the way to go. Good luck!
Yes, I also would recommend you to buy a new Pre 2 as he is going to get the Update to newer WebOS-Versions which will support the new development modell (Enyo which uses Javascript, you can also mix C or only use C for development).
You can get a cheaper developer Pre 2 if you register.

I don't think that WebOS will surpass Apple or Google very fast and in this year it will "only" establish and stabilise itself. The next year is when it is getting bigger. For now there is still some room for good Applications in WebOS.
We have good Twitter, Music and Notes-Apps... But I guess if you have an idea and you kick it your idea will work wherever you try^^
A third working eco-system, especially at the start, is a big chance for "new" guys or people who have a good App which now only is on the third, fourth or fifth place because the platform where he is now already isn't very "flexible" any more and has some big established players. In such an environment he could try to make himself a name on another platform before the big ones show up.

What really sucks is not being able to have everything in one ROM. I'm not saying it's the devs fault, but it just sucks. If I want a full working phone I have to dual boot and I just don't want to have to have my messages on a different ROM. If someone calls you and you don't know they did how are you to respond?
And on the other end using a Jellybean/ICS ROM which I currently am, you can't record or use HWA, and it's buggy. If you want full functionality, you have to use Gingerbread which sucks because it is very outdated and 1/3 of my apps won't even be able to be installed on my phone if I use it. Not only that but the rest won't have a much functionality.

It really sucks having a G2x.. it had great potential and was just abandoned.. LG should legit give refunds to everyone who bought them because people with the G2x are sacrificing functionality or using the best Android version. Anyone else agree? (I know it would never happen, but still.. I have to use this phone for another 7+ months before I get an upgrade in which I'll grab the iPhone 5S and stop with the fragmentation)

Just get a Nexus. We all wish LG had done somethings differently, (Release the ICS update for the P999), but we can't do anything now. I wouldn't ever by another phone made and supported by LG, however if it is a Nexus and has software updates issues by Google themselves, then I would. This Nexus 4 is amazing and is one of, if not, the best phone you can buy currently for it's price.
Android phones were designed for people who love tweeking, if you want a phone you never have to modify or have to worry about updates or fixes, get an iphone, its very noob friendly, even my mom can use her iphone with great success.

The problem is when manufacturer's pack in a whole bunch of completely proprietary hardware into a phone, then they stop developing for it and releasing drivers. Couple that with jerkwad carriers that force locked bootloaders and other restrictions, and it makes the whole situation stink. I have an LG Spectrum 2, it is a very, very good phone. But I'll be stuck on ICS until the end of time because the carrier, and the manufacturer, have no consideration for support after the sale.
These devices are computers that can make phone calls, I've yet to see an actual computer whose software couldn't be modified or replaced.
At least Apple allows every device to upgrade to the latest version (within reason).

Apples are built with an entirely different philosophy, when you buy their product you are cradled with software and design support at the expense of having no freedom with the device whatsoever. Android, and essentially linux which is its base, whole purpose in life is customization, especially on the user end, hence why open source support is so huge for android phones. You are right though, jerkwad carriers and proprietary hardware take alot of the fun out of all of it for the expense of profits, thats why I love the fact that google came out with the nexus line of unlocked phones, its basically a jab at all the carriers and their proprietary phones and software saying, we can do whatever we want, because its our right to, we designed it.

At this point it seems like android was made for people that will pay top dollar for unfinished products.
Excuse me and other sensible people for wanting a fully working device. My iPhone 2g and 3g both worked and I could still modify them quite a bit. Even my sister's galaxy nexus had big mms problems that Google never fixed.

I too swore never to buy another LG device and silly me I got a Nexus 4....
I still cling onto my G2X and use it as media device. I have DROID TV and have like over 20gigs of shows I need to watch and finish. Also I connect my phone to my TV and watch it there. Don't use it much as a phone. Mainly because whenever I watch my shows it would interrupt and got very annoying.
I still love my G2X. Right size, great screen, never needed screen protector. Battery is terrible and Nexus 4 is just as bad, I mean could be better but isn't.
But who's to blame. Honestly, if CM10.1 gets calling ability and work I'll come right back to this device. Main reason I don't sell it or dump the phone is because I paid full retail price for it and still refuse to accept the loss. Because thats what this phone has been. A loss. I mean seriously.

Nexus 4 really that bad? Unlocked and off contract for $350 is a steal in my opinion. That's only $100 more than a used galaxy Nexus.

Eh, I decided to get the new One from HTC. It just had too much promotion to not get it. I love the G2x, great build quality for sure. I was able to get the One for $99 by switching to Sprint, and I decided to go ahead and send in the ol' G2x to (hopefully) receive the $100 gift card. So, essentially I payed next to nothing for the phone itself, but I will have to eat the cost of cancelling my T-mo account a few months early, but I'll also be able to get a discount on the plan because of corporate discount through work. It was just too enticing not to go for it. I know it's not a Nexus, but I am positive the hardware will be more than capable enough to run several more Android versions in the future. I believe the G2x just won't be able to handle much more than jelly bean. I think it's mostly the lack of ram, but I'm going to remain subscribed to this forum and check back on occasion. If it goes past jelly bean, I won't be surprised if those future versions will be running barebones/ultra slimmed down versions. I also have an old school G1 still, but bricked it trying to get the system to see SD card as usable ram to upgrade. Still wish I could get that thing to work...

I might be picking up a Galaxy Nexus dirt cheap to tide me over till my upgrade.
Although, I really don't have anu bad blood with my G2x.
First smart phone, does everything I need it to do, and I've only ran into a couple games that won't run on my G2x due to being pre-4.0.x OS, and I just play them on my tablet running BakedBean 4.1.2. Still a good phone for me after 15 months. Solid build, I don't care too much it doesn't have ICS/JB, with 512MB total, and after carveout for GPU, sitting at <400MB, the experience of ICS/JB on this device isn't going to be anything stellar over GB as GB didn't have as large as memory usage requirements as ICS/JB.

Yeah, I agree with the most of the people here regarding software updates between iOS and Android and I honestly LOVE android, but the software updates are slow.. if Google could fix up the fragmentation, they would be closer to #1 on my list. The only other complaint is apps in the Google Play but that's not really a big issue. I'm glad at least I wasn't the only one who was having problem with my G2x.

I have only been introduced to the world of android rooting and Modding for the last month. This is my first smart phone. I got bored of it and found this website. Read about the advantages to rooting and flashing roms for a few weeks and finally did it. I'm more than satisfied with how my device is performing compared to stock. It's faster, better looking, and just plain more fun to use. I would love to see a fully working ics rom though. I love the interface and crisp feel.

Blaming LG is only partially right. It's primarily from being on a crap AWS carrier like t-mo, wind, etc. The p990 got it's update, no reason p999 wouldn't with just a few tweaks except they didn't even care that much. Anyways, blame is on the carrier. Keep in mind buying your next phone.

To be completely honest if we get the RIL working on 4.2.2 this phone could easily last me another 7 months
