Haven't decided whether to flash a new ROM, but I wanted CWM recovery so I could wipe battery stats to improve battery performance like I did on my MyTouch 3g. I rooted my Galaxy S 4g and followed the "[RECOVERY]CWM FINAL for the SGS4G" instructions exactly. I downloaded the recovery file and used File Expert to place it in the /system/bin folder. I didn't delete anything (I DID save a copy of the original file), just let it overwrite. I downloaded the update.zip file and placed it in the root of my SD card.
I rebooted and now I can only get to the splash screen, whether I just power it up or hold down both volume buttons and the power button to try to get into recovery. I can get into download mode so I downloaded Odin and it recognizes my phone. I'm pretty sure I can restore from here and will look for instructions on the site, but I would rather just restore the original recovery file first (if it's possible) to see if that works.
Question: Can I use Odin to restore just the original recovery file? If not, is there another way it can be done considering that I can only get into download mode?
You can't (to my knowledge) use ODIN to deal with individual files like that. You could download the android SDK from www.android.com, install it, install only the 'tools' module (else you download and install all of the different sdk versions for the platform as well as other stuff), and use adb to move the file back into place.
I'm sure someone here probably has a mo-better way, though.
I was spending too much time on this so I decided to flash another ROM. GB ROMs gave me the rainbow bootloop so I flashed stock FROYO (thanks, krylon360) successfully. I'll worry about GB, rainbows, and bootloaders later when I have more time, but I still want CWM recovery. Any ideas as to why it didn't work (see OP)?
To get rid of rainbow screen just odin the kg4 leak. Then Odin one of Dr honks gb kernels to get cwm.

GB ROMs will do that if you don't first flash one with the correct boot loaders. KG4 was the first GB ROM to have the right ones.
I'm not sure what happened with your initial attempt to get CWM working, though. I've never attempted it that way; I've always flashed one of drhonk's GB kernels.

the update zip goes on the root of the sd card
meaning not in a folder dont extract it just copy it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554
after you odin according to the noobs guide to odin in the bible,
go to krylons final cwm. his directions are pretty straightforward. i used root explorer to move the recovery file where it needed to be and placed the update.zip file on the root of your sd, which means that if you connect your phone to the computer and open it using windows explorer, it is that first window, which lists all of the folders. dont put these files in folders or anything.
i am assuming you downloaded the rom already from the CWM rom section in the bible. its up to you. im biased towards bionix frost because it was what i started with, but you HAVE to check out team acids new roms!
i would also dl bali 3.3 kernel as well. place all of the zip files you download into the root of your sd card..
once that is done, i restarted my phone in recovery by shutting down fully and pressing the power+volume up+volume down. once there, i went to reinstall packages to get into cwm.
then when this loads, i wiped the system/factory reset and wiped the cache. then i went to mounts and storage and mounted my system. (the final mounting output should be: unmount, mount, mount, unmount). i then scrolled to "go back"
i choose install zip file from sd card. choose zip file, which should be the second option if my memory serves me right. choose your cwm flashable rom and install that one. then when that is done, went back and went to advanced and rebooted recovery and flashed my bali uv kernel. when that is flashed, i click go back and choose reboot system. once that is done, you will see the galaxy s screen for like 5 min or so followed by the boot animation. once you see this, it will take another minute or so to load up. once you see that the rom loads up...LET THE PHONE SIT FOR 10 minutes. i know it seems long, but just let it sit.
after 10 min or so, i would go into your about phone options and check and see that you have bali and that the rom is correct.
you can flash a modem too using the same process as flashing any other zip file.
remember, the first option in choosing a zip file is update.zip from krylons final cwm. do not flash this after the rom/ext/whatever. im not sure if this has been addressed (im still a noob), but everytime i did that, i bricked my phone. lol. so just to answer your question before you wonder...cause i always wondered whether i should flash that or not. lol. you do nothing with that update.zip. once you restart, and you see that you have bali 3+, you can delete that update.zip because it is no longer needed.
make sure you read through the original threads too before flashing.
gotcha, so all i need is the update.zip file? do i need the binary file?
yay! workssss, thanks everybody
I tried putting clockwork recovery onto my Samsung Infuse. I Installed it through a ROM Manager and now everytime i go into the ROM manager and select it to boot into recovery it boots into android system recovery. I cannot get to the Modified Recovery needed to install a cutom ROM.
What do i need to do to get CWM to work?

Option 1:
1.-Download Sgs Kernel installer
2.- Download a Kernel with modified cwm included ( here one choice: http://www.multiupload.com/1E3AWIQYAA <--If you are on Froyo;
http://www.multiupload.com/6ZVYU3F106<-- If you are on Gingerbread) The links ARE NOT mine are gtgx.
3.-Put the kernel in your sd card.
4.-Open sgs kernel flasher and select the kernel.
It will reboot and convert your data to ext4 and also give you modified red cmw ready to install custom roms. It will take about 5 minutes be patient.
Option 2:
1.- Download the Defuse 1.5 one click kernel from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331381 (link NOT mine)
2.- Put your phone into download mode
3.- Run the file you downloaded it will do the work for you.
Find Odin preset with 3e and root. Follow directions and run odin properly with phone in download mode (explained in odin post). After that you will be rooted with modded 3e recovery. Then you can download rom manager when the phone reboots and flash for galaxy i9000, reboot into recovery and reinstall packages. You should be able to reinstall packages now since odin set up your recovery. It sounds like you aren't able to put the modded recovery in the system/bin folder; same thing happened to me. I had root, but could not modify the recovery file in system/bin. Odin is a charm, if I had the money I would donate to the guy who made it, unfortunately I don't at the moment. Odin says phone should show as com## yet mine showed as com0 and still worked. Probably depends on which USB port you use. Odin takes about 10 minutes to flash your phone but it will be worth it when you are done. I was skeptical because of the steps but it is very easy, once you get your phone into download mode its a breeze. PLEASE HAVE A FULL CHARGE WHEN YOU DO ANY FLASHING. If your phone dies you can have serious problems during the flash.
thank you all, I am going to try these once I get my internet restored.... this is kinda agony since my t1 line died....

Just an update, Forced it to work with SGS kernel, it put up a huge fight tho... after CWM was installed i got GingerReal 2.3.5 on there. I iz happeh
Okay, so my phone came with this build number already, KJ2, it's a sidekick 4g, and i successfully rooted it, but i wanted to install custom roms and other kernels to improve performance.
From what I understand, you need to have cwm to flash custom roms, I think. Well thing is, i can't even flash cwm. The phone already came with recovery 3e, which cannot install unsigned packages or whatever... and i see the only way to downgrade to 2e from what i've searched, is using that CF-root zip file, but well, there's no such file for KJ2.
I have wasted 2 whole days just trying to do this and trust me, i have searched, and i know how annoying it can be for noobs to be posting questions here, but sorry, i really have searched all over the place and i'm making no progress. I can't even get past flashing a custom recovery in order to flash other kernels and roms.
Is there any possible way to do what i'm trying to do?
since is rooted go to krylon360 dev thread and download the update and the recovery thingy then go to youtube and type sidekikc 4g all in one and it should be there and download and only hit the batch file
i did that, but it just boots to the normal recovery, not the clockworkmod. also if i pretty reinstall packages, having already replaced the recovery file and put the update.zip in the sd card, it tells me signature not verified, and the installation fails. also everytime i'm in recovery mode, at the bottom it says manual mode, and it says appling multi-csc, installing multi-csc, and it's just there, literally forever, nothing happens.
U got to use the fake flash by sdduvick on that thread

well i have a new problem. i used odin and switched the firmware to KD1, but the recovery is STILL 3e, not letting me do anything. how can you downgrade 3e to 2e?
Im not the best with this but did you repartition? Would that fix the recovery problem if so?
you mean repartition on odin when flashing the firmware? yeah i did that, and the recovery mode is still 3e, which will never let me move on. oh well...i see not many people know about this problem, i'm just one of the unlucky ones
In order to downgrade your recovery, you will need to use Krylon360's modded recovery.
Use my script from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15831175&postcount=124
double click on the .bat after enabling debugging on your phone (Settings>Applications>Development>Enable USB Debugging), it will set up recovery and reboot you into recovery, you'll need to press "Reinstall packages" to get into CWM.
his link doesn't work
Hi all, hope you can help. I installed clockworkmod recovery onto my wife's captivate, and now it won't boot - it's stuck at the "galaxy-S" screen.....I can get it into the YELLOW TRIANGLE screen and once managed to get it into the clockworkmod menu screen.
I believe the phone has android 2.3, not 2.2 on it and this might have been my mistake. The entry point into the kernel is likely different...
how can i fix this? do i need to remove clockworkmod and go back to the stock bootloader? The phone is not rooted, yet (that was the next step).
I haven't been able to find anything in the forums about people that have done (the stupid thing that I did) and installed clockworkmod on a 2.3 phone.
Thanks.
How exactly did you flash cwm? You shouldn't even be able to cause if 3e recovery signature verification?
If you can get to the yellow android screen, that's download mode. You're actually in a good place right now.
To fix where you are, take a look at the development section - there's a post about One-click stock packages. If you're sure she was on Gingerbread, grab one of the non-bootloader Gingerbread stock packages and flash that from download mode.
If you're not sure, I would suggest grabbing one of the Gingerbread stock packages with bootloaders (just to make sure).
In either case, see if you can find a one-click package with ClockworkMod Recovery baked into the kernel (it should say on the post which ones have it). That way you can flash what you want right out of the gate.
thanks. i am quite sure it has gingerbread. the person i bought it from said they did a kies update to 2.3.
i was following the instructions from the cyanogenmod wiki for the captivate: hxxp://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
after it finished installing the "clockworkmod recovery" i got into this bind. are those instructions for froyo only?
If you followed the instructions about flashing the speedmod kernel, that's where it's hanging. You've got a froyo kernel with a GB rom. Not a big deal, but Android isn't happy about it. Flash a stock GB package, or find a GB kernel with CWM (like boog's) and flash that and you should be ok.
thanks. do i do this using ODIN or heimdall? I installed CWM using heimdall, and in my frantic reading i thought i saw something about installing stock bootloader/rom packages with ODIN after installing CWM could brick it? Or did I misread that?

Using heimdall is fine (it's also my personal preference between the two, but either will work).
With where you're at, you really shouldn't need to flash any bootloaders. That's pretty much the only area where there is a real risk of hard bricking the phone.
Since Heimdall worked for you once, I'd suggest grabbing the Heimdall one-click I made that's in my signature. You don't need to open it in Heimdall - just download, double-click it, and let it get ready to run. Then connect the phone in download mode and click "flash". You'll have the stock GB rom, with Boog's kernel and CWM all ready to go. You can then flash CM7 from recovery there (you'll probably have to flash it twice, though).
On a side note - flashing stock will wipe your apps. I'm assuming you backed everything up before this. If not, you might need to try and just flash a kernel first, do your backups, then go from there.
(Should you want to do that, go here, grab the one from the "Here is the odin flashable version flash it first if your on stock: Link Mirror" set of links, and then flash that in Heimdall.)
wow, thanks guys, i can breathe easier now. jmtheiss, i got it reflashed to UCKH3 using your one-click package (though now it is AT&T rather than rogers, but i really don't care as long as it works!).
does the one-click root application work with 2.3.4? or is there a more-preferred way to root it now?
Again, thanks so much for the assistance people!
In theory, you should already be rooted (I believe boog's kernel, which was in my one-click, is rooted). If not, go to the bottom of boog's 1st post, and grab the KH3 zip file. Flash that in CWM, and you'll have root permissions.
Or, if you're flashing to CM7, you can just do it from recovery as you are right now. I know from personal experience it works.
thanks everyone. it all worked, and all is good. wife is not an angrybird anymore

Glad to hear that she's not flying over your house shooting explosive eggs. Always a turn for the better.
Had the same problem once before, odin fixed it aswell
I have a HTC Thunderbolt and im familar with rooting. Im getting a Samsung Droid Charge in a couple of weeks. I downloaded odin and the usb drivers for the phone. Do i just wipe the phone, put the phone in download mode, load any EE4 based rom and wipe after reboot? I can't find the altered beast rom because the feds jacked the megaupload servers.
thanks
If you just want root, all you need to do is flash CWM from odin, then boot right into cwm and flash the SU Binary.
You really don't want EE4. EE4 is Froyo based. ED4 is the latest release. Right now there are 3 roms based on it: Tweakstock, Infinity, and Eclipse. You are going to be way, way happier with any of them than you will be with anything EE4 based.
I am running tweak myself, but I believe if you look around you will find a rooted stock version of gb to use and yeah you just flash it in Odin and boot right into cwm

Copy the Eclipse file to your SD card first, and if you want to run a kernel (I recommend PBJ), copy it to the SD card as well. Use Odin to flash CWM (any version works, as long as it's one of the Charge Odin files). After that, pull your battery back out and put it back in, then boot directly into CWM by holding Home+VolUp+Power. If you let it boot normally, it will overwrite CWM with stock recovery. Using your volume buttons as arrow keys and your power button as select, wipe data/factory reset, then install from zip and select the rom file, and then, if you chose to flash a kernel, do the same for the kernel. Reboot and you should come up in your new rom. It will probably take a few minutes to boot the first time while it rebuilds the caches.

Imnuts primarily uses Rootzwiki for his releases, so it's easiest to find his stuff there.

I still recommend the old 0817 yellow CWM if people intend to nandroid backup/restore. That functionality seems to be hit or miss with the newest release.
