are you running a stock deodexed rom?

if he said stock rooted im going to guess prob a no

can you get into recovery or download mode at all?

im on the stock one, whatever came with the phone, yes i can get in recovery and download mode

you need cwm final from krylon360 u can find it in the bible and also you will need the modified recovery file and a deodexed rom u can get from the bible follow the directions and then u can have your kernel

the update zip goes on the root of the sd card
meaning not in a folder dont extract it just copy it

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554
after you odin according to the noobs guide to odin in the bible,
go to krylons final cwm. his directions are pretty straightforward. i used root explorer to move the recovery file where it needed to be and placed the update.zip file on the root of your sd, which means that if you connect your phone to the computer and open it using windows explorer, it is that first window, which lists all of the folders. dont put these files in folders or anything.
i am assuming you downloaded the rom already from the CWM rom section in the bible. its up to you. im biased towards bionix frost because it was what i started with, but you HAVE to check out team acids new roms!
i would also dl bali 3.3 kernel as well. place all of the zip files you download into the root of your sd card..
once that is done, i restarted my phone in recovery by shutting down fully and pressing the power+volume up+volume down. once there, i went to reinstall packages to get into cwm.
then when this loads, i wiped the system/factory reset and wiped the cache. then i went to mounts and storage and mounted my system. (the final mounting output should be: unmount, mount, mount, unmount). i then scrolled to "go back"
i choose install zip file from sd card. choose zip file, which should be the second option if my memory serves me right. choose your cwm flashable rom and install that one. then when that is done, went back and went to advanced and rebooted recovery and flashed my bali uv kernel. when that is flashed, i click go back and choose reboot system. once that is done, you will see the galaxy s screen for like 5 min or so followed by the boot animation. once you see this, it will take another minute or so to load up. once you see that the rom loads up...LET THE PHONE SIT FOR 10 minutes. i know it seems long, but just let it sit.
after 10 min or so, i would go into your about phone options and check and see that you have bali and that the rom is correct.
you can flash a modem too using the same process as flashing any other zip file.
remember, the first option in choosing a zip file is update.zip from krylons final cwm. do not flash this after the rom/ext/whatever. im not sure if this has been addressed (im still a noob), but everytime i did that, i bricked my phone. lol. so just to answer your question before you wonder...cause i always wondered whether i should flash that or not. lol. you do nothing with that update.zip. once you restart, and you see that you have bali 3+, you can delete that update.zip because it is no longer needed.
make sure you read through the original threads too before flashing.

gotcha, so all i need is the update.zip file? do i need the binary file?

yay! workssss, thanks everybody

By the way not to be an a$$ should have been posted in the Q&A thread.
i tried the fast boot but my computer wont connect to it to do anything when in that
Since your already rooted, the easiest way to put a recovery on the phone is with clockwork mod.
Go to the market, search for clockworkmod, scroll all the way down and download "Rom Manager"-Free version.
After install, open the Rom Manager app, and the first option will be to flash clockworkmod recovery. It will do everything for you to flash recovery.
Once flashed, simply shut the phone down, and when you turn the phone on, press and hold the home button till you get to recovery. To do a nandroid backup, scroll down to nandroid, and select backup. Done.
to flash a rom afterward, place the rom's zip file on your sdcard, reboot to recovery, select to clear system/user settings, scroll down to yes, then back in the main page of recovery, go to flash zip file, select zip, and then select the zip file from the list. After that is done, select reboot to boot into the new rom.
DONE!
thank you that was exactly what i needed

Please assist -- how to install CWM?

Hi guys. I've got a Samsung Mesmerize and I'd like some assistance getting CWM on my phone so I can properly flash kernels and such. I know next to nothing.
Currently, I am using the stock EC10 ROM with stock recovery. It was simple enough to get, I followed some instructions for adb and did the "adb reboot download" command with my phone to put it in download mode and then used Odin to flash the ROM. This is literally the extent of my knowledge.
I began wanting a new kernel because of the speed and battery life improvements, among other things, that seem to accompany custom kernels. All the instructions I found for flashing them involved CWM, which of course I do not have.
Finally I found an app on the market called "sgs kernel flasher" which claimed to be a very easy way to flash new kernels without using CWM. So I installed it and used it to make a backup of my current kernel, and then I flashed jt1134's 0327-2 kernel which I got from here. All went well.
And that is the state I am at now. I am using the stock EC10 ROM with stock recovery (which I've never used nor do I know how) that I flashed with Odin, and I am using jt1134's 0327-2 kernel that I flashed with sgs kernel flasher.
Now though I believe it would be a very good idea for me to get CWM as it seems to be what is used if something goes wrong with the phone. I have the Voodoo Control app that I got from the market and it states the lagfix is active and has options which I believe enable and disable the lagfix.
From the current state my phone is in, can anybody tell me what I need to do in order to get the latest version of CWM working on my phone? Many thanks in advance and sorry for not knowing what I'm doing!

Thanks, I saw that except I literally don't know what I am doing, and I can not find anywhere in that thread that says HOW to install CWM. I get the impression that these threads are written for people who have at least some basic understanding of how this stuff works, which sadly I do not...
And also how do I disable the lagfix to flash things if I don't have cwm? Can it be disabled with voodoo control?

In your voodoo control you can disable it by unchecking the boxes and rebooting. You should hear the lagfix lady when rebooting.
For CWM I actually flashed it with Odin. this thread Will help you in the easiest way possible.

Ah, so if I understand correctly, the process to get CWM is to disable the lagfix in the Voodoo Control application, and reboot the phone. Then put it in debug mode and connect to my PC and use ADB to put it in download mode, and finally use Odin to flash the CWM tar file? Is there anything special I need to do in Odin, like enable certain anything or check any specific boxes?
In Odin, do I flash the tar file in the PIT, PDA, PHONE or CSC field?
To put your phone in Download Mode all you have to do is take the battery out and hold the Volume Down button while plugging your phone up to your computer via USB (yes without the battery in it). There's no need to fool with adb
No offense but this is the exact kind of thing I don't understand. When everyone else in the world follows standard procedure of ODIN'ing the stock ROM with CWM to then be able to flash kernels and all that, why don't you? Every single time a question like this arsises is because someone tried to go out and not do what everybody else does and try to go approach things in some roundabout way.
Lesson for the future and for others - Just follow the instructions and what not in the forums. If you start skipping steps or trying to create your own avenue of accomplishing something you're just going to run into trouble.

That should've been a hint right there. If they all have instructions that involve CWM, well then **** man, clearly you should get CWM.

Thanks. Alright... I flashed the CWM package with Odin and it was successful. Do I have CWM recovery now? I held volume up/down and powered on the phone and it went into a red menu that appears to be CWM and has options for voodoo and such.
I take it this means I was successful? I read somewhere that to finish the installation, I need to flash sdcard/update.zip from recovery, and I do see the option to do that in the red menu. But I'm confused, because it looks like I already have CWM now? Also, in my file manager I do not see a file called update.zip in the /sdcard location, or anywhere. Am I done? Why is that option in CWM if there is no update.zip file (apparently)?
So if I do now have CWM, how do I flash a kernel with it? Appreciate the help, I am learning here.
EDIT:
I know I didn't do this correctly from the start, but that was because in the beginning I was only looking to upgrade to Froyo and keep everything else stock, then I got interested in doing more...
The red recovery menus are CWM.
To flash a new kernel just download it onto your SD card. Then in CWM select, Install zip from SD Card. Then select Choose zip From SD Card and select the kernel.

Thanks! Do I actually need to name the kernel file "update.zip" or is that just the arbitrary name of the menu option?
No, sorry couldn't remember exactly the way CWM worded it. It doesn't doesn't have to be update.zip, it can be named anything.zip. It'll take you to navigation type menu where you can move in and out of folders on your SD card and select the appropriate file.

[Q] Splash screen only: now what?

Haven't decided whether to flash a new ROM, but I wanted CWM recovery so I could wipe battery stats to improve battery performance like I did on my MyTouch 3g. I rooted my Galaxy S 4g and followed the "[RECOVERY]CWM FINAL for the SGS4G" instructions exactly. I downloaded the recovery file and used File Expert to place it in the /system/bin folder. I didn't delete anything (I DID save a copy of the original file), just let it overwrite. I downloaded the update.zip file and placed it in the root of my SD card.
I rebooted and now I can only get to the splash screen, whether I just power it up or hold down both volume buttons and the power button to try to get into recovery. I can get into download mode so I downloaded Odin and it recognizes my phone. I'm pretty sure I can restore from here and will look for instructions on the site, but I would rather just restore the original recovery file first (if it's possible) to see if that works.
Question: Can I use Odin to restore just the original recovery file? If not, is there another way it can be done considering that I can only get into download mode?
You can't (to my knowledge) use ODIN to deal with individual files like that. You could download the android SDK from www.android.com, install it, install only the 'tools' module (else you download and install all of the different sdk versions for the platform as well as other stuff), and use adb to move the file back into place.
I'm sure someone here probably has a mo-better way, though.
I was spending too much time on this so I decided to flash another ROM. GB ROMs gave me the rainbow bootloop so I flashed stock FROYO (thanks, krylon360) successfully. I'll worry about GB, rainbows, and bootloaders later when I have more time, but I still want CWM recovery. Any ideas as to why it didn't work (see OP)?
To get rid of rainbow screen just odin the kg4 leak. Then Odin one of Dr honks gb kernels to get cwm.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
GB ROMs will do that if you don't first flash one with the correct boot loaders. KG4 was the first GB ROM to have the right ones.
I'm not sure what happened with your initial attempt to get CWM working, though. I've never attempted it that way; I've always flashed one of drhonk's GB kernels.

[Q] infuse troubles

I have been trying to flash Infused 2.2.3 to my Infuse lately but it never seems to work. No matter what way i choose to boot into clockworkmod to flash the rom it doesn't boot into the red screen always the blue screen (reboot system, reinstall packages, delete all user data, format internal SD card). I have tried downloading the rom from rom manager and downloading at the finish prompt, booting from phone off with the 3 button combo, booting from the "install from sd card" menu in Rom manager. I even found an app that booted into cwm (albeit the wrong one). I downloaded it from ROM manager (wherever that goes) and I put it on my Ex. SD card from my computer (using an adapter not my phone). Did i do something wrong???
Also another problem i found. When I try to download apps from the market app everything gives me a "APP_NAME could not be downloaded due to an error." but when I restart my device it pops up when the media scanner finishes like it just finishes?
If I manages to Flash the ROM will it fix the market???????
It will go back to normal right???
*sorry for my bad grammer, im rather strained at the moment*
CWM is installed by flashing a kernel that has it. What you are seeing is stock recovery. You need to flash the infusion kernel, which has red (voodoo) cwm, and then flash infused from that. There are guides to do this, if I wasn't on my infuse I'd link it, but the kernel needs to be flashed via Odin.
And I'm sure your market woes will disappear with Infused!

well wait a second... I have already flashed Infused and even another ROM (TEDGY) thru CWM stock from ROM manager. I downloaded Infused and somehow it applied? I checked because A. my battery lasted all day even with extreme usage B. it said i was running infused in the About Phone menu?
If the kernel is what you run first could it be possible I flashed it thru SGS Kernel flasher???
also. CWM doesn't read your external SD card. if your coming from CM7 i believe its screws with the directories and switches the cards around or something like that. I would recommend just flashing the community kernel via odin again.
Okay I have spent the last 3 days flashing kernels and roms Via Odin or CWM and nothing will stick I must be missing something.
My kernel procedure
1. find defuse-kernelv1.4.tar and set as PDA file in Odin
2. put phone into download and start.
3. usually walk off and let the lady yammer on (to calm my nerves)
4. come back and check settings VIOLA!!! I'M BACK STOCK???
What am i missing/doing wrong/have wrong procedure????
I'm hoping to one day peruse this forum with enough know how to help N00BS (like myself) so anything is helpful.

rooting with odin?

I have a HTC Thunderbolt and im familar with rooting. Im getting a Samsung Droid Charge in a couple of weeks. I downloaded odin and the usb drivers for the phone. Do i just wipe the phone, put the phone in download mode, load any EE4 based rom and wipe after reboot? I can't find the altered beast rom because the feds jacked the megaupload servers.
thanks
If you just want root, all you need to do is flash CWM from odin, then boot right into cwm and flash the SU Binary.
You really don't want EE4. EE4 is Froyo based. ED4 is the latest release. Right now there are 3 roms based on it: Tweakstock, Infinity, and Eclipse. You are going to be way, way happier with any of them than you will be with anything EE4 based.
I am running tweak myself, but I believe if you look around you will find a rooted stock version of gb to use and yeah you just flash it in Odin and boot right into cwm

Copy the Eclipse file to your SD card first, and if you want to run a kernel (I recommend PBJ), copy it to the SD card as well. Use Odin to flash CWM (any version works, as long as it's one of the Charge Odin files). After that, pull your battery back out and put it back in, then boot directly into CWM by holding Home+VolUp+Power. If you let it boot normally, it will overwrite CWM with stock recovery. Using your volume buttons as arrow keys and your power button as select, wipe data/factory reset, then install from zip and select the rom file, and then, if you chose to flash a kernel, do the same for the kernel. Reboot and you should come up in your new rom. It will probably take a few minutes to boot the first time while it rebuilds the caches.

I still recommend the old 0817 yellow CWM if people intend to nandroid backup/restore. That functionality seems to be hit or miss with the newest release.
