I'm a graphic designer by occupation and I'm looking to help work on ROMs. I'm very happy with the G2x section on this forum (some other sections are legit dead) and the ROM selection is awesome. The performance is on par with every ROM I've tried; I consider each other five or six that I've tried to be great improvements over stock OS. One thing has bugged me though: the design of most UI is just plain, boring, and sometimes even ugly.
I'm willing to do some UI design (themesets, icon packs, general UI optimization) for anyone who's willing to pick me up. I can provide a portfolio if requested. (I feel like I'm applying for jobs again ).
Anyway, shoot me a PM or reply in here. I'd love to put some work into the community here in any way I can.

I'm down, man. What type of style are you wanting to run with? I've wanted to create a minimalist, functional ROM for a while now. Are you looking for a complete overhaul of the UI or just simple design work? I'd love to work on a project that's a unique take on the UI.
Let me know. I'd love to help out.
I want to help as well.
Hey DEVs. Where can I find some guides for building Kernels for the P999? I would love to recreate Faux and Dragon Kernels to learn how its done and perhaps provide back to the community. With the ultimate goal of building a dragon like kernel with swap, zram, and tweaks with JBoxer new 2.3.4 kernel.

Start with new graphics for the settings and notification bar/window. Decide on a color theme for the rom. You can just search around on google for what sizes, etc. I will send you a PM with a link for a zip file with settings graphics and systemui graphics from a stock rom. There are specific requirements Android has and I am not sure what they are, as I just copy graphics from carrier roms. Try to figure it on Google.

Why the hell would you ask this in this thread? That has absolutely nothing to do with the title. YOU WONT GET HELP LIKE THAT!

Well thanks dw9906, The title of the thread was "Want to help with ROM development" and I sure as hell would like too, but if I don't know how to start I guess I can't help. I guess I will continue to be a noob waiting and asking for other people to do the custom ROM work.

Use Google Search. It works magic. That is where I learned everything I know about rom development. With Google and four days work I was able to modify the SystemUI.apk on my rom and port the Samsung i9000 Quickpanel to the notification window. Don't give up. Do some searching, trial and error and you can learn anything you want about Android and how to develop for it.
First step, install the Java JDK and Android SDK environments. [free and free]
Second step, install Eclipse Java development environment. [also free]
Third step, Google, Google, Google. [mostly free]
Enjoy. I hope to see some efforts from you soon.
Thanks JBoxer
Thanks JBoxer, I found about 5 sites using your Keywords and found some great places to get started. Did you make any changes to the Kernel or WIFI module in your ROM to make it compatible with the P999, or did you just build from source?

I did neither. Kernel is from rom LG built for another vendor's proposed device. They built an evaluation rom for 2.3.4. The phone's hardware is identical to the P999. I am using that kernel and wireless.ko.
Okay so before the trolls walk in i just want everyone to know i'm new to the Rom scene therefore i do not know all the rules for when you post one.
Now for the kinda cool part. I got bored today and figured i wanted to make a Rom based off of SupremeSense. But i realized i dont know everything about rom building so i took a stock based rooted rom and threw some supremesence in it but it wont boot now so what im proposing is that i post it, then you guys add your own little tweaks to it leave sceen shots and details and if its awesome(better than what i already have posted) i will replace my link with the one you provide. We will continue this until you guys stop posting. Remember im open to all suggestions.

I cant exactly get it to boot up but i do know there are smarter people out there that know what to do. But what i did was download the latest SupremeSence And a rooted stock based rom, then pulled up 7zip copy a bunch of Supreme into the Stock added a little me and flash it. My original goal was to get landscape on Supreme but i reallized i wanted to take it bigger, if you want i can pm it to you and you can upload\try to get it working
Yeah what's the goal here? You can't just take a rooted stock ROM and start adding my apk/odex files to it. Another difference between Stock and SS is resources.

i just basicaly wanted another rom out there for us because we dont have much to choose from. And i wanted to base it off of your rom because it awesome, i figured i have a ton of spare time so might as well try
So where to begin. First off its a nice IDEA. Ill give you that much. Second off there are technical and ethical issues your facing .
The first thing you ever do is ask permission whenever you are using someone elses work, and it doesnt sound as if you asked strapped365 for permission to use it (whether he minds or not is a different story. Should always ask)
Second is like Strapped365 said you cant just open 7zip and start dragging and dropping. Its ameture ,and almost never works,
Please research. I love the fact that someone wants to learn about developing ROMS and such, but you need to make more of an effort to learn the time it takes to do this
Oh and if you have no public work to share please don't post in development section.and if you do get a public link up (if the mods are nice) then post (wip) at the title to show its not really functional . Because this is far from beta ,more like pre pre alpha as it wont even boot.
I dont really believe this belongs in this section but im not a mod
Good luck, back to betting on horses

thanks for the reality check
a large part of the mods are done between apks and jar files with editing the smali in classes.dex (if done correctly anyways) so taking one rom and another and trying to mash will almost never work like notsointeresting said above. As for there not being much to choose from, theres actually quite alot for the shift, especially in the last couple months.
newSENSE
Supreme Sense
CM-7
unofficial CM-9 builds
Cyclonic
Stock Rooted
MIUI
and many more.
theres quite a few devs busting ass and pumping out some quality work. your idea is nice and also like notso said, you def need to ask permission from other devs before trying to tear apart or manipulate a rom theyve worked hard on. there are some guides floating around though that are great assistance in making your own roms. sparksco, dodgejcr, one_love_420, and a few others i cant remember offhand have put up guides to help build kernels and compile roms. do a little reading and practicing and in no time youll be building your own custom rom too.
this by all means isnt an attack, just a confirmation of whats been posted already and some of my own opinions. good luck learning and building.

This community is full of smart people that make it hard for us dumber ones to really be helpful, my way of helping is to hit thanks buttons and stay in the shadows. Good luck man
question for op did you change the updater script or anything what happends when it attempts to boot ? black screen wont even flash etc..

We won't even begin to identify the problem without knowing exactly what apks you copied and pasted, but due to cluttering and the bumping of this thread I'd say not to continue to help in THIS particular thread until it gets moved or you post another thread in general to help out.

Hd2 died and had to find a phone, got a g2x! Seems fast and works but I loved having my hd2 rooted and trying different ROMS. I have tried looking at a lot of threads and just can't seem to find anything or anything I can understand. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.
Well you're a little late to the G2x party, although it might start up again soon.
So g2x is one of the easier phones out there to root/rom.
Read this

And after that you'll be ready to install your Rom, just visit the g2x Android Development forums and look through them til you see one that you like. The CM9/CM10 based ones aren't really ready yet, but they will be soon. So find one that says CM7 and just look through the threads til you find one you like.
I currently have Hellfire Pheonix on myself. It's not the prettiest stock, but you can change the theme.

Similar to the post above, I recommend finding yourself a cm7 based rom currently until the new su660/990 cm10 based stuff starts floating out. I personally run basic cm7.2 with the faux kernel. All of the cm7 based roms are rock solid stable generally, any of the cm10 based roms you see will have various bugs (gps/data-sms/battery drain/video record/etc). The cm10 roms are usable, just not 100% stable at the moment. Once the cm10 port drops which should be fairly soon, you'll be in good shape with just about anything in terms of reliability.

Try mokeeOS. It's what I use coz its very well themed right out of the gate and a daily driver for me. Everything works as other mention coz it is CM7.2. Once the port for cm9/10 is ready, we'll love our phone more.

A word of advice, be like me and just lurk most of the time, people around here aren't here to teach us untalented people the basics. These saints are here to share and discuss with other developers, not baby us. I read an analogy somewhere "XDA-forums are as if developers are older brothers that just let us play with their toys, but they get annoyed by us easily."

[Q] Photon Q Jelly Bean (More of a "Question to our problems than an "Answer")
So I was browsing the internet countless of times (no life) and I have discovered something disturbing
A Newbie’s Guide: Updating Motorola Photon Q LTE to Jelly Bean (Custom ROM)
I get the idea that everyone wants to get a custom rom/theme from this.
But what bothers me is...... [THERE IS NO LINK TO ANY JELLYBEAN ROM IN THE LIST]
I am wondering what is the meaning of this.
Any Ideas?

From reading the article, it seems like the author just assumes that the device is officially unlocked, it will also mean that custom ROM's are ubiquitous... Unfortunately the two do not go hand-in-hand..
Awesome. So i'm glad i'm not the only curious one. I hope as well there is more dev on this because there are quite a few mods for this phone. But not so much on custom roms persay.

Not going to deny I'm a little new to this. As much as I want to assist on the project, all i know how to do is follow the guidelines that are set out by this forum. So now waiting on my last peice of equipment (SATA to PATA converter for my hard drive). I see the work that others have accomplished out of their busy schedules and Its used on my Asanti C as well. By the way, Is it possible to use parts of a custom rom from another phone and tweak it for this phone? Example: Take info from the moto devices to make one for this?
PS. I am new to this, but I'd like to contibute and throw in ideas

It has been my experience...much of it unfortunate to me lol, that custom roms for
other similar phones can be pieced together but it is crucial to remember
that individual phones have unique partition tables and hw/sw interface.
We have brilliant people on this at the moment, and we already have
phenom custom kernel and deodexed system files...not to mention not one but
two custom recoveries that make working Nandroids. I am much like the average
modder on this forum, I follow directions and give experience feedback.
That being said, any experimental roms send my way I would be happy to
test 'em!
With Kitkat being ported to so many older devices because of the lowered system requirements, I figured its time we get one on the ThunderBolt. I by no means can do this on my own, so that is why I am starting this thread. I will try to reach out to as many devs as possible to get this going. Just a little about myself, Ive done basic ROM developement on a few devices, the most notable being the 2 generations of the Nexus 7. Over the past few months I have greatly expanded my knowledge and capabilities with android. The extent of my coding knowledge is basic Java, a little bit of C++, and arduino, which is why I need help for this. I see this as both a learning opportunity for me as well as a chance to participate in expanding the Thunderbolt dev community. I'm mainly looking for somone who can help with kernel and radio develpement, and someone who can help with porting the actual software over. The reason I need these people is because I have no experience in kernel development, and as for the actual developement of a KitKat rom, I'm sure its more complex then downloading KitKat source and throwing in the Thunderbolt device trees. I've been researching the topic and havent found much useful information. If you feel you can help support the effort please contact me.

There definitely are, but the difficulty of getting data on AOSP for this device, coupled with the age, current ownership/userbase, and developer interest translates to probably not. It's okay though, it was a great ride while it lasted.
