[Q] Photon Q Jelly Bean (More of a "Question to our problems than an "Answer")
So I was browsing the internet countless of times (no life) and I have discovered something disturbing
A Newbie’s Guide: Updating Motorola Photon Q LTE to Jelly Bean (Custom ROM)
I get the idea that everyone wants to get a custom rom/theme from this.
But what bothers me is...... [THERE IS NO LINK TO ANY JELLYBEAN ROM IN THE LIST]
I am wondering what is the meaning of this.
Any Ideas?

From reading the article, it seems like the author just assumes that the device is officially unlocked, it will also mean that custom ROM's are ubiquitous... Unfortunately the two do not go hand-in-hand..

Awesome. So i'm glad i'm not the only curious one. I hope as well there is more dev on this because there are quite a few mods for this phone. But not so much on custom roms persay.

Takes a lot of hard work and time... and probably quite a bit of knowledge. Something I'm short on right now...
So unless you want to help out, it's just going to be a waiting game.

Not going to deny I'm a little new to this. As much as I want to assist on the project, all i know how to do is follow the guidelines that are set out by this forum. So now waiting on my last peice of equipment (SATA to PATA converter for my hard drive). I see the work that others have accomplished out of their busy schedules and Its used on my Asanti C as well. By the way, Is it possible to use parts of a custom rom from another phone and tweak it for this phone? Example: Take info from the moto devices to make one for this?
PS. I am new to this, but I'd like to contibute and throw in ideas

It has been my experience...much of it unfortunate to me lol, that custom roms for
other similar phones can be pieced together but it is crucial to remember
that individual phones have unique partition tables and hw/sw interface.
We have brilliant people on this at the moment, and we already have
phenom custom kernel and deodexed system files...not to mention not one but
two custom recoveries that make working Nandroids. I am much like the average
modder on this forum, I follow directions and give experience feedback.
That being said, any experimental roms send my way I would be happy to
test 'em!

This may seem like a redundant request but if you are or are GOING to be deving for this device could you post your Twitter or G+ id's here so we can follow your work?
That would be great.

I guess I need to get back with it now that I have kernel source...

need to brainwash the tab8.9/10.1 developers to do the custom ROMs for us as well..
btw, what are we looking for in a new custom ROM?
EXT4, i think Samsung already moved to this...
Optimization
- Hardware Acceleration? Already ON by default in Honeycomb, I have done this mod and no difference at all.. it depends on the app to utilize this feature...
Theming ? Once rooted, you can modify the framework files.. should be quite easy, but abit time consuming... and requires creativity...
- Bloat removal? just ROOT and remove those excess fats..

My two yr old son plays fruit ninja and the calculator/calendar/etc opens. I bet a lot ofyou experience the same annoyance of the bottom bar mini apps not having the option to hide or lock on games and other apps on fullscren.
I'm not likely to be getting the device but I'm gonna stop by and help out to get things off the ground.
In terms of speed of development, keep in mind this thing "soft launched" in the US - I didn't even know until a few days ago that it was available at all. It's typical for a device to take a few weeks to get off the ground, the I777 was an unusual exception due to being 95%+ identical to the I9100 and being a majorly anticipated handset launch.
I'm going to start on something here soon, buy this will be my first developing for any device, so you prob won't want to follow anything I do, its gonna be slow and buggy

Hi all,
I just got my hands on a galaxy tab 7.0 plus and was hoping to build a rom for its community (no one has really built a rom for 7.0, its a small community and we just got CWM).
Ideally I'd like to kang together a stock Honeycomb 3.2 rom, free of touchwiz. I was hoping to port over one of the Google I/O Roms for the 10.1. I figure our devices are close enough that I can try tossing over the build props, make sure to use the boot/recovery images from the 7.0 and maybe, just maybe, get lucky. Or at least have a good start.
The problem is that I can't seem to find any of the Google I/O roms, past 3.1. Do those device not get updates? Is there another Touchwiz free rom I can start from? I remembering reading a while back that TWUX is an optional update for the 10.1. I've been looking around, but I'm have a heck of a time finding links that clearly imply I'm dling a Touchwiz free rom. Most of the just say "Stock" which is a bit ambiguous.
If someone would be kind enough to point me to an ODIN and CWM mod version of the sorta rom I'm looking for I'd be greatly appreciative(and hopefully if I can get this out the door, so will 7.0 community)
Thanks!

Stock Rom

I want to do everything I can to develop for this phone. What I need from the people here is a stock flash able rom. I have made great progress on this phone but but idk how to build stock roms and at this point I'm not sure I have the mental capacity to learn it.

LOL...
Without a stock ROM, we have been unable to develop much...
What have you developed, here?
Mostly the community is hacking the stock installed rom, and fixing what Motorola has purposefully broken, but with out a few more pieces and a working sbf, you are not going to get a "Stock" ROM.
If you really want to help out go jump into the bootloader unlock forum:

I use cheesecake 4 times a day every day. If I find something I compare it to what others have found.. What have I developed? Nothing more then a headache. Using the bionic safestrap I have been able to recover from 3 soft bricks. 2 of them using adb to push to the phone and 1 using the restore tool. But i had to remount /emmc to /sd-ext. But I think at this point I am done trying anything with this phone.
One more thing.. what can't we use all the stock files I've pulled from the phone to make a flash able zip?

Seems like you know a lot more than all of us who have been working diligently for the last 60 or so days with this phone.... Why don't you give it a try and see if you can create a flash-able zip.
You can't build a flash-able zip, because you can not zip or tar files on the filesystem that are in use, and the kernel has a ton of files open and locked. the backup software gets around this in a couple ways that we really can't do, and backups are useless to make flash-able zip from. That is why we need the sbf or fxz or source code to make a flash-able, zip or ROM.
That is why we have warned everyone over and over and over, about trying things we post, right now. The information is not to try out, it is sharing of the developers, and for those of us working on actually developing solutions for this phone. There have been so many bricks, because people are not listening.... I am actually thinking of trading my phone with a buddy to get out of this, because I am tired of hearing about all the bricking people are doing, and having to help save someone who did something to their phone that they did after we told them not to.
Unless You Know What You Are Doing Don't Try This At Home. Until we get the fxz or sbf files. I am getting tired of saying this...
P.S. doing work on the cheesecake thing does not make you a Developer. Hell I am not an Android Developer, I am a UNIX and Linux Hardware architect and UNIX and LINUX Kernel Developer, so I am am able to use all that, 20 years of experience on the Android kernel, and I have been hacking and working on phones a long time.
Now I know it is great to try things and learn, but while learning, it is best to try things we say are safe first, then once you are more comfortable with certain things, then try something daring, that you know how to do.
I am in no way trying to insult you, just realize that right now, with the little help we have on the experienced development side of things, it is real painful to get things moving forward when people don't listen, or do things they are not ready for and then keep asking for help when they killed their phone in the process.

Yeah if it comes to anywhere close to the OG Atrix board I am out so fast it is not funny.
The thing is that I am most of the time ignoring these posts, but when you 6 people all did something similar, or like the OP did 4 or five things that messed his phone up, because he/they were impatient, you kind of have to tell them, look if you don't like it, get another phone. Heck the OP tried to say he was helping the cause by doing these things, when it was said so many times don't try this....

The funny thing is the "OP" didn't do anything he was told not to due.. Instead he/I tried new approaches and have actually been able to recover from a few soft bricks at this point. We get places from trying new things not by talking down to those that try them. I'm trying to help as I own the phone too. I am not in any way "under-educated". I am a .Net developer and I am doing my best in my free time to help the community by opening up this phone to its full potential. Now, Am I impatient.... Hell Yes.. I want CM7 and ICS now. Will I get it now?.. No, but i'm trying to get the rest of you on your way. I cant believe you would try to push someone so willing away..
A better way to go about it would be to post your discoveries and share them to help others out instead of demanding things you need.

We aren't pushing anyone away that is willing to help and we welcome everyone that is willing to hel. But when you experiment know that we might not be able to help you and we have no way back to stock. By experimenting we found root, the bionic's bootstrap and we will have to continue to experiment. Part of progress is by finding out what works and what doesn't.
We need to all work together and not against each other. But with that said if you look at the amount of recent posts with people experiencing problems and calling for help is because they didn't do any research before hand and now they are asking for help for something they could have very well prevented by patiently doing a little homework.
With the progress you have said to have made, start a new thread about it explaining the procedures you went about to recover from the soft bricks so others can benefit from them as well. I can promise you we are all very interested.

AOSP ICS for the samsung galaxy s 4g

Literally every other phone has some kind of beta ICS support. I've never developed a rom but i've found myself with some free time i don't want to spend studying for my ccna and would like to devote it to getting an aosp rom semi working. even if it's only the most basic of roms then someone more experienced won't have to start from scratch.
tl;dr I'm looking into making a sgs4g ics aosp rom and would love any tips/advice instructions that people have to offer.
Start reading the forums !!!
trust me i've been reading i set up my linux box and have been trying to find any info about creating an ICS rom but all i've been finding is stuff for gingerbread. btw this is strictly in my freetime and i'll need to wait till i buy another phone before i start flashing willy nilly on my baby lol so yea it's gonna be a while.
I don't think it was on XDA -- but Android Forums if I'm not mistaken.
There was a team who were making pretty good progress on it but unfortunately they had to drop development on it.
It was a problem of devoting time and bricked devices. If memory serves me correctly. Googling around rather than searching XDA will help you find the thread I was talking about. Because I sure can't. Might've been on Rootz too, really not sure.
I'm pretty sure FB was working on it. That or shutting up all the kiddies demanding more progress. One of those two.

Any idea what the name of the team that was working on it might have been?
testing
ok so it's unlikely that i'll be able to afford a new phone for a while and i'm not too excited to be testing this on my phone so my question is will anyone be willing to try out my concoctions on their device? i'm asking for people with experience recovering their devices here. i really don't want any "My phone is ruined" situations here. i'm looking for testing and feedback as i'm working on a kernel first the goal will be to get the phone to boot with ics.
With only 4 posts you're going to have to prove to others that you're legitimate before they want to try out your releases.
How exactly do i go about proving myself to the xda community?
I mean the people who matter and can help with this little project.
Get a rom out... Hahaha.
ultimately if you dont have the courage to flash it to your own device dont expect others to feel really well about flashing it for you.... (unless your 100 percent sure it wont hard brick them)..
It's not really a matter of confidence it's that i need my phone for work/school. Once i get another i wouldn't mind flashing it. I wouldn't ask someone to flash something that would brick their devices.

AOKP/CM - ICS -> JB BootLoader?

I haven't found the answer, and I was actually just curious as to what the hurdles are switching the bootloader in the rom is?
Being that I am on the JB BL, I am stuck with mainly two roms, Clean and Hydro. Both great roms, but was just curious from a dev standpoint, since we have both the ICS and JB bootloaders floating around out there, what hurdles are in place keeping a JB BL version of AOSP being made.
Thanks!
Mario
+1 I would like to know also. I keep seeing don't do it you will brick but can't find any information about what happened or when. Yes I have searched! I may not be able to recover from a problem that you just breeze through as we are all different. The subject deserves further study.

Maybe someone can provide links or definite info about this situation.

No, the devs should work on this problem and trying to fix it not discuss why its not running.
As far as I know it has something to do with the new Kernel.

I was speaking of the devs starting and maintaining the thread.
I have seen one post here (FT300) asking for testers NVFlash but it is common in other threads.
The more heads involved the better the chances of conquering the problem.
Take the nook tablet!
Bauwks broke open the locked bootloader problem, you never see him post but he is there and knows his stuff.
AdamOutler seldom posts but he broke booting from the sdcard.
Numerous threads were provided a key piece of the puzzle by people who seldom post and are not listed here as developers.
These things have a better chance of coming to pass with more people involved and that is the reason for a sharing thread.
Obviously the thread has to be highly regulated as to what can and can't be posted for it to be effective.
There are good devs in this forum also and I'm sure they are working on the problem and I take nothing away from them or their contributions, but maybe there are people in the wings who could also help (not me).
I will be a tester as needed but don't have current knowledge base to work with. Like others here I am trying to learn by studying and following examples of others.:good:

I can see both +'s and -'s to this. Myself, I have both Engineering and Computer Science degrees and quite an extensive amount of programming experience, but I have never worked on the Android platform. Any and all information pertaining to the reasons or methodologies behind why something isn't working is all food for thought for someone like me and might be a trigger to motivate a breakthrough. Being in the dark in most cases doesn't move anything forward, and I think there is an old saying that really applies here... "Why recreate the wheel."
I know a lot of programmers think "Do it yourself and learn", but at the same time, we are all trying to work to the same goal, getting the best user experience we can. With that said, if every single person had to start off at point 0, it would take an infinitely longer amount of time to get to where we could be. If we all shared ideas, and in some simple form or another, had a collection of proofs that have worked, then it would allow anyone with minimal android programming experience a way to start somewhere beyond point 0, and get up and helping as quickly as possible.
For those who simply want to sit back and complain about something not working but have no interest nor will to contribute, this may be the issue we are experiencing with programmers who just have no interest in hearing people whine and fill up their threads.
Just my 2c.
Mario
Anyone have any links to people who actually bricked trying to go back to JB from ICS? I have searched and searched without any positive results. I only get don't do it, it will brick your device.

[Q] Lollipop? Is anyone looking to develop a custom Rom for the Xoom?

I know our Xoom is getting a bit long in the tooth, but it still is one of the finest equipped pieces of hardware out there. I've been using the Omnirom 4.4.4 iteration for many months now, and love it.
How many tablets can you name that have external sdcard,HDMI, and USB capability besides the normative features most tablets have.
I think the Xoom might just might have a very good future with the next iteration of Android, Lollipop. I'd love to be able to
work on this, but if I did it, I'd have to find someone who would loan me a Xoom they have laying around unused for an extended period of time.
I don't know, but the more I think of it the more excited I become.
That's not how it works...... You are a user not a developer.... I will see what can be done when sources come out but no this is a scam! Why get a Xoom if you already have one? From a account with no rom threads started

Wasn't a scam Cameron. I have 1 Xoom that is my primary computing device with anything having to do with mobile devices. I will not have it's useability compromised.
By the way, long ago I wrote code for the Atari ST, STacy and Falcon. In the last few hours I have been able to get a second Xoom from a friend locally (he's not using it, and thought it was bricked-It wasn't, just needed help-I've got working) once I get my friend's Xoom up to speed and brush up on my coding skills I should be able to help.
Honestly, I'm 74 years old and just tired and busy enough that I'd rather not take away from my limited time to become a developer again. At this time I'd like to just be a user and return my friend's fully working Xoom to him
Cameron, It seemed like most of the developers had just gone into hiding and I was hoping to generate interest from the community..
You don't know me, or really know much about me. If you did, you'd know that I wasn't attempting to scam anyone. In fact, saying that my goal was to scam is almost criminal and libelous, but I'm not one to easily take take offense.
Just please don't do a rush to judgement again. Once you make such statements they aren't easily retracted.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. Your friend,
Rob

I am simply a "user" also but I can attest to the fact that I have seen numerous posts from Kingsman1 in other Xoom forums and he is always there to help others with questions or problems they are having with their tablet.

Thanks for the vote of confidence my friend. The Lollipop Software Development Kit (SDK) is out there. I think that I'm going to hide and watch(though I am available at any time) as far as development is concerned. There are many of us who need help, including me from time to time. I'll go back to helping when I can.
Blessings to all,
Rob

And add another vote from me - I have seen and read many a helpful Kingsman post in these forums - I wish I had some sort of useful skills other than flashing other peoples hard work or I would help - hope this generates the desired response from some other motivated developers - best of luck Sir Rob -

Since being on IOS since 2011 I haven't used this account ; I got on here to say thank you; you are an inspiration for the ages. As our knowledge and experience becomes "mature" it's good to see that young or wise by years; we can all work together.
By the way,
I do have a second Xoom of my own not, and am running Omnirom 5.1.1 Alpha on it. At the moment, I'm looking to see what it can, and can't do. I hope to be able to help Schischu develop this into a stable, and very complete Rom now. Even so, this alpha is very polished, fast, and smooth.
I think we're gonna love it.
Blessings,
Rob
