I'm a graphic designer by occupation and I'm looking to help work on ROMs. I'm very happy with the G2x section on this forum (some other sections are legit dead) and the ROM selection is awesome. The performance is on par with every ROM I've tried; I consider each other five or six that I've tried to be great improvements over stock OS. One thing has bugged me though: the design of most UI is just plain, boring, and sometimes even ugly.
I'm willing to do some UI design (themesets, icon packs, general UI optimization) for anyone who's willing to pick me up. I can provide a portfolio if requested. (I feel like I'm applying for jobs again ).
Anyway, shoot me a PM or reply in here. I'd love to put some work into the community here in any way I can.

I'm down, man. What type of style are you wanting to run with? I've wanted to create a minimalist, functional ROM for a while now. Are you looking for a complete overhaul of the UI or just simple design work? I'd love to work on a project that's a unique take on the UI.
Let me know. I'd love to help out.
I want to help as well.
Hey DEVs. Where can I find some guides for building Kernels for the P999? I would love to recreate Faux and Dragon Kernels to learn how its done and perhaps provide back to the community. With the ultimate goal of building a dragon like kernel with swap, zram, and tweaks with JBoxer new 2.3.4 kernel.

Start with new graphics for the settings and notification bar/window. Decide on a color theme for the rom. You can just search around on google for what sizes, etc. I will send you a PM with a link for a zip file with settings graphics and systemui graphics from a stock rom. There are specific requirements Android has and I am not sure what they are, as I just copy graphics from carrier roms. Try to figure it on Google.

Why the hell would you ask this in this thread? That has absolutely nothing to do with the title. YOU WONT GET HELP LIKE THAT!

Well thanks dw9906, The title of the thread was "Want to help with ROM development" and I sure as hell would like too, but if I don't know how to start I guess I can't help. I guess I will continue to be a noob waiting and asking for other people to do the custom ROM work.

Use Google Search. It works magic. That is where I learned everything I know about rom development. With Google and four days work I was able to modify the SystemUI.apk on my rom and port the Samsung i9000 Quickpanel to the notification window. Don't give up. Do some searching, trial and error and you can learn anything you want about Android and how to develop for it.
First step, install the Java JDK and Android SDK environments. [free and free]
Second step, install Eclipse Java development environment. [also free]
Third step, Google, Google, Google. [mostly free]
Enjoy. I hope to see some efforts from you soon.
Thanks JBoxer
Thanks JBoxer, I found about 5 sites using your Keywords and found some great places to get started. Did you make any changes to the Kernel or WIFI module in your ROM to make it compatible with the P999, or did you just build from source?

I did neither. Kernel is from rom LG built for another vendor's proposed device. They built an evaluation rom for 2.3.4. The phone's hardware is identical to the P999. I am using that kernel and wireless.ko.

guys this is not a question, this is a "plea" for some help...
if one of the great dev's out there would be kind enough to enable multitouch on this rom http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1701190/kb7sqi-magic-full-V2.7.2.zip
i, and many others who use this rom, would really appreciate it
ps: i did pm the dev who cooked it, but he didn't answer, so i thought i take my chances elsewhere..
what ROM is this??
my bad..
its a rogers rom that comes with a flash player enabled browser and other sweets that come with a rogers rom, such as the smart dialer, apart of course from being lightweight, which makes it run smoothly on my 32b G1
more details can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567371

patience. devs do this voluntarily at their own time. demanding for features won't really get you anywhere. Especially with 2.1 AOSP being out there now, i'm sure there's a lot already going for them.
Try this: http://lukehutch.wordpress.com/2009/01/25/get-multi-touch-support-on-your-t-mobile-g1-today/
Don't know if it works for your rom since it's originaly made for 1.1, lol.
Thanks for the tips guys..
Unfortunately the above link suggests installing a different rom to get a mt enabled kernel.
Sorry if i sounded pushy. Didn't mean to...
I was just wondering what it takes to apply the mt patch to the kernel thats all
I think you can't just install multitouch on a rom because it needs to be in the kernel. So or you wait the rom builder of your rom includes it in his rom, or you need to try another rom.
what base firmware is this ROM using?
i dont have time to research it
Its cupcake 1.5
kingklick,

You wont find someone to do this. You've cluttered the developers thread with your groveling. You should read up on the methods and do it yourself. Plus, then you could do a lot of extra goodies. If you want something done, do it.

you mean learn java and android programming, and in a few months, or maybe a year, i'll be able to do it all myself... sounds like a great idea..
but here's a better one,
in this world we live in, there are specialized and professional people, each in their own field, so when someone "like you or me" need something that is not in our ability or specialty, we seek a professional...
i don't mean to be rude, but this could easily be compared to learning dentistry to do your own tooth...
haven't you asked for any help from anyone in your life?
If you really want MT in browser why not use dolphin or one of the alternate browsers in the market?
mt is missing in the rom itself, the patches were not applied..

Can you help me? I don't know how to but I would like to learn. This would be a wonderful day if I could achieve Rom greatness here at XDA
I've never done it but have an interest in it. Mostly, I haven't because I need a stable device available.
My guess is at a minimal, one can use e.g. Gingerbread source and an existing device to make a fair bit of changes and flash a ZIP via CWM on a Gingerbread based phone; we'll need ICS for the same. Google has some stuff you might want to read and we probably have a thread somewhere here. Although these forums can be a maze to find stuff. It will help if you have specific and obtainable goals though.

very interesting...
sign me up Scotty
Somewhat interesting, I have registered on the new Developer site, however it seems to be geared more towards app developers, with little of use to those doing platform work (AOSP bringups including Cyanogenmod porting, kernel development, etc.)
There are no IC datasheets, and no source code for test firmwares such as UCKL2 for the Infuse (SGH-I997).
Stickied for the time being
Thanks for the news. I will check it out to see if it is a good choice for beginning devs. It might also be interesting for me to learn more specifically regarding my Samsung phone.
does it mean,
some people develop ROM or app together?
make money?

Very well said! It seem like Samsung have just discovered all the free work force to produce code that is much better than their own. Now they wanna tap into this, without giving anything of value in return.
How about dropping some spec-sheets on the HW level and some source code to their drivers, instead!?
Damnit, i'll have to learn some programming now! To the Batmobile!
+1 for "spec-sheets on the HW level and some source code to their drivers"
..especially for devices like Galaxy 3 (i5800/i5801), which (apparently), you are not going to update now on.
Sounds Cool
sounds pretty interesting, ill check out the youtube video.
Thanks for the news.
Would be nice if the video talked specifically about developing ROMs, especially AOSP-based...
useful info
merge samsung and htc rom?
hi i somewhat enjoy my samsung charge except for the predictive txt sucks i want exactly how the htc has theirs can anyone give me some info on merging these things i want to build or tweak a rom for the charge also currently downloading all the sdk stuff about to run over to samsung dev site and see if i can get into that also.

great stuff, keep up the good work!

[Q] Photon Q Jelly Bean (More of a "Question to our problems than an "Answer")
So I was browsing the internet countless of times (no life) and I have discovered something disturbing
A Newbie’s Guide: Updating Motorola Photon Q LTE to Jelly Bean (Custom ROM)
I get the idea that everyone wants to get a custom rom/theme from this.
But what bothers me is...... [THERE IS NO LINK TO ANY JELLYBEAN ROM IN THE LIST]
I am wondering what is the meaning of this.
Any Ideas?

From reading the article, it seems like the author just assumes that the device is officially unlocked, it will also mean that custom ROM's are ubiquitous... Unfortunately the two do not go hand-in-hand..
Awesome. So i'm glad i'm not the only curious one. I hope as well there is more dev on this because there are quite a few mods for this phone. But not so much on custom roms persay.

Not going to deny I'm a little new to this. As much as I want to assist on the project, all i know how to do is follow the guidelines that are set out by this forum. So now waiting on my last peice of equipment (SATA to PATA converter for my hard drive). I see the work that others have accomplished out of their busy schedules and Its used on my Asanti C as well. By the way, Is it possible to use parts of a custom rom from another phone and tweak it for this phone? Example: Take info from the moto devices to make one for this?
PS. I am new to this, but I'd like to contibute and throw in ideas

It has been my experience...much of it unfortunate to me lol, that custom roms for
other similar phones can be pieced together but it is crucial to remember
that individual phones have unique partition tables and hw/sw interface.
We have brilliant people on this at the moment, and we already have
phenom custom kernel and deodexed system files...not to mention not one but
two custom recoveries that make working Nandroids. I am much like the average
modder on this forum, I follow directions and give experience feedback.
That being said, any experimental roms send my way I would be happy to
test 'em!
So I am making a rom. It's written in C++, CSS, and HTML. I need a bit of help, my CSS is rusty so if there's any experts out there I welcome your help. If there's any designers out there well versed in C++ you are more than welcome to join on up. have you tried turning it off and on again?

Why discourage someone like that? You don't know him or what he's capable of. What if someone had said that to the developer of your favourite ROM when he was starting out and he listened? XDA is a place to encourage development, and a place to encourage people who want to learn how to build ROMs. There can never be too many ROMs available, and there can never be too many people/devs working on them. This guy could be the next big thing in the ROM community and all you want to do is shut him down. Unless you're going to contribute in a positive way, maybe don't post.

I'm just thinking that he is underestimating the job... He has 3 posts, needs people to do the majority of the job. Just my 2 cents.

Umm... Building a ROM is kinda different. You don't exactly have to write all the code yourself (that would take a few lifetimes ). You have to use existing stuff, and patch it together the way you like. You can change the coding style and stuff to the way you want. The CM development page would be a great idea to start with getting familiar with all the stuff.
Xavierdarkness, your enthusiasm is awesome. I'm pretty sure your rusty CSS skills are okay though, but you should really pick up some ActionScript if you intend on making the best ROM.
Dude, write it in machine language....that would be the tits
Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement. It means a lot. I hope to draw on my existing knowledge of QBASIC, VB 6, and HTML to help me on this journey. I'll likely have something up in the next few days if anyone would like to check over my QBASIC to make sure I am getting the API right with android. Thanks again, I'll read all the links you guys have provided and will update this periodically.

A new team inside XDA of developers will be a good news.
Perhaps learn must be encouraged and I hate people say that there are too many roms... This is not a marketplace but a place for developers.
