Radio update - HTC Desire S

hi guys, on my Desire S (s-off with Rev), i've updated to pre-rooted rom 2.10.401.5 but i'm still with the old radio (20.28I.30.085), no bugs, no issues but I would like to update to the "correct" radio
here are the questions:
- have i to format&clean cache and partitions?
- would i have any advantages with the new radio?
- is it real that the 20.4801.xx radio has some battery drain's issue and so it's better to use 20.48.30 radio?

To answer some of your questions:
You don't have to format anything, although wiping your cache is recommended, because not doing it could lead to a bootloop after the radio is updated.
Strictly speaking, any advantages gained by changing a radio is probably only minimal. Some report better battery life, better reception, while most (me included) don't notice any difference. The opposite can happen, a friend of mine updated to a newer radio and it broke his wireless for good, so he had to revert.
I don't know about any battery issues, since I've not used that particular radio, but the general rule of thumb is, if you don't have any real problems with your current radio, there shouldn't be any reason to change it.
That's my 2 cents anyway, hope someone more knowledgeable in these matters can provide more info

I'm running he 20.4801 radio and actuLly find my battery life has improved over he 20.48 one.

excuse me but didn't you say that you've had battery drain with 20.4801 and so you tryed the older 20.48.30?

How can a different radio make the device faster?

I would like if someone could explain this phenomenon to me!
I tough that the radio only changes the "radio" performance in the device, like signal strength, bluetooth, wifi and so on!
I upgraded my radio from version 1.02.25.25 to 1.02.25.28 and my device is now actually performing much better/faster in all aplications!
Can someone please explain what is affected with a rom update?

While I do not cook my own roms or use custom ones, I have found from both research on here as well as first hand usage of updated roms from my carrier. The performance changes are mostly from things being tweaked or corrected. With custom roms that people here create you will find that they go into the data and gut out everything that is not needed as well as patch up bugs. They also make changes to different settings that they find are actually more efficient then the default ones.
With stock rom upgrades while they may or may not take items out but they do apply the same concepts as above. Modify settings to work better and correct known bugs. Bugs are where you lose performance. Poor coding can relate to a number of issues such as slower performance, memory leaks, device not functioning as intended and things running when they should not be which can lead to excessive battery loss.

That part I do understand, what I meant to ask was what the radio update changes to make the device faster?
That is what puzzles me most!
well said!
to be a little more specific to the radio rom, its still all about the bugs, cleaning and optimizing code. for instance if there was some bug causing a communication error between your device and the carrier, the phone would have to wait for that to be resolved (if ever) to properly use the radio (be it 3g, edge, etc.)
in another sense, if the processor cannot properly communicate with its own devices (radios: gps,wifi,bluetooth,edge,3g) it may take a chunk of processor power to try and figure out whats going on or repeatedly ping each device, which could slow it down.
my philosiphy is that if you can get the latest and greatest rom/radio rom for your phone, without bricking it, then by all means, do so. you'll be a happy camper when its done.

Thanks, things make much more sense to me now!
So I guess that a better radio will almost always improve the device performance!
Now the only question is, can I use a radio designed for the diamond in my touch pro, or do I have to wait for more touch pro radios?
do NOT use a diamond radio. different hardware calls for different radio. just be patient, as soon as the US 3g version is actually available there will be more roms.
In the past, on my wizard, some radios had improved performance, while others decreased it...it depends on each revision to the radio rom.

Actually if you read the Hardspl thread and some of the others you'll find there is no problem flashing the Diamond radio on the Raphael with a couple of little tweaks

Radio doubts!!

hi there.....sorry for the stupid doubt. but i need them cleared by those of u who dont mind helping newbies like me out.
what are the benefits of flashing a newer radio version? does it improve battery life or what else?
i am with airtel in india. i run radio version 4.1.13.41_02.88.90. is this good enough or would anyone recommend a better version?
will be grateful if anyone can help me out!
thanx in advance
still no reply? cant anyone clear my doubt?
If you have no problems with your current version, why upgrade?
Newer versions are said to have better batterylife and/or resolve dropped call issues or have better signal strength.
But I think no one knows for sure.

hmmm.....my battery is just over a year old and runs out in a day. i charge it daily. i run fireburned's lite rom and i dont use wifi or gprs or too much of bluetooth. do u think a radio upgrade will improve my battery life?
signal problem and dropped calls are not an issue with this radio that i have. it never has been.

Flashed the new radio

I flashed the new radio on Virtuous' OP. However, I feel little or no difference in performance... Does anyone know what exactly this new radio accomplishes? I did do my reading but no one seems to have a definite answer. They say better wifi and data connection but that only seems like a speculation.

Sure is a speculation, also lesser battery drain...
Tapatalked from a Desire S waiting for Kernel 3 sources. WAKE UP HTC!!!!!!
Radio benefits are bound to be subjective depending on where in the world you are, what types of connectivity you use and and what you do with your phone.
So far over the last year I've found that with each subsequent Radio release/leak battery consumption has improved and wifi/GSM signal strength has been better.
But that is certainly not guaranteed. If you're S-OFF'd you should be able to rollback Radio releases if you find that the new radio is worse.
Tired to write this...
WiFi has nothing to do with baseband ("radio"). Most, if not all, of the "improvements" in WiFi reception after baseband build change are placebo.

you're suggesting that wifi has nothing to do with the radio? Just checking? As I've always believed it did...
I thought it had to do with bt, wifi, along with all types of mobile and data connections (ie gsm, edge,3g hspda etc)

[Q] Firmware/Radio version CMX T-MOBUS

Please be gentle if I failed to research this more fully before posting
I recently went from Stock ICS to CMX (19 Oct). I notice that my battery life is so-so now. I figure I need to update my Firmware/Radio .I want to pair with my Rom correctly. I am currently running :
Phone: HTC Sensation 4G
HBOOT 1.27.1100
Carrier: T-Mobile US
ROM: Bruce2728 CM 10 Jellybean 4.1.2
Radio: 11.69A33504.00U_11.23.3504.07_M2
Firmware: ?
Recovery: 4EXT Recovery Touch
I am curious about "kernel-bruce2728-05092012.zip" and "cm-10-TMOUS-DATA-TEST-bruce2728-pyramid.zip"
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction
I think you have the TMOUS 3.32 firmware. The TMOUS data test is an old build that tried to resolve some data connectivity problems for TMOUS users

The battery life on CM10 is questionable right now due to elemetns Google added to the google services framework starting with Android 4.1.2 around October 10th-ish.
It cause nearly constant wakelocks by Google services that are trying to have various google apps talk to each other to sync everything up.
In other words it's using battery during sleep states, even though your battery graph will show that it's not. But when wake the phone up you'll see a quick battery drain down to what the actual level is within a few minutes.
From playing with it, I'd say these wakelocks eat about 10% - 20% of the total battery life, depending on your use. (The more you use the device, the less the wakelocks are hurting you since the hone is awake anyway)
Your radio and firmware are probably not a major factor in the battery drain. Though finding that 'perfect' radio / ril / firmware combo for you might give a small boost. Maybe 5%.
This problem isn't due to the CM Team or the ROM develper. It's a Google issue. I don't know if it's supposed to be doing this or if it's something that will be fixed on 4.1.3. But bear in mind 4.1.2 isn't exactly avaialble for wide spread release in the Android world, so it could just be a bump in teh development road.
Is it worth it to update my radio to 11.76A.3504.00U_11.24A.3504.31_M ? I see a lot of signatures with other people using it.
no..problem is we all live in different areas and what works for others might completely disconnect your data due to your area.what you can do is experiment with different radio and ril to find one compatible with your area. remember your old radio so you can return to it if need be. when i switched radio and ril i just experimented to see which was best. start with the basic ics radios and rils this is a good place to start. hope this is helpful. best wishes!

Thank you for the tip. I hasn't sure if ICS radios and ril were compatible with Jelly Bean

[Q] Blackout 3.2

Upgraded to Blackout 3.2 and have been noticing that my signal is low and there are many places where I get no service. I tried to flash a new radio and messed up my phone. The wife is using the same thing and having problems with service strength. Will this rom ever have a different radio in it or can one be put in it as an option for people having problems with signal. I guess my phone does not have the proper s-off to flash radios and when trying to get it there my phone died.
I like this rom but need different radio.
Any help appreciated.
I have Been using this rom with no radio issues at all and it is the first i have heard of such issue's the only problem i have seen so far is with lag which can be fixed buy overclocking saftly to 1.4ghz and 250hrz or choosing supersmoth from the blackout tweaks Desire HD ONLY
