[Q] Some questions about eeePad - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a few questions about the eeePad, before I decide if I should buy one or not.
1) First of all, how is the ebook reading experience in an eeepad?
Is it readable without zooming a lot? Also, is it slow (it was kinda slow in a galaxy tab I once saw!) when you use ebooks or pdf files with a lot of pages or pictures?
2) How is gaming? Any good keyboard playable games?
Any RPGs? Anyone tried wesnoth?
Edit: Okay, so the emulators work!
3) How is the movie playback of non mp4 formats (mkv, rmvb, avi etc.)?
As far as I tried, it works on desire z and was very slow on xperia mini pro (old one) and galaxy gt-i5510!
4) I saw the thread on Ubuntu! Is it slow? Can it run any other OS?
5) Does normal android apps (the ones for mobiles I mean) work in eeepad?
Do they shrink or become too large or something?
If these questions were already asked, I apologize in advance!

1) Fine. I find the Kindle App and Polaris Office (for PDFs) works fine. Readability without zooming depends on the user also; I don't have problems.
2) Some work (e.g. Muffin Knight), gaming on Android varies I guess. And thx, didn't know someone was selling a Wesnoth port; I'll have to check that and see what's up.
3) I'll leave it to others here, since I don't even own a Blu-Ray player yet...hehe.
4) Probably, read the thread maybe? Remember it's armv7l not x86 or x86_64. I run Debian stable in a chroot.
5) That's kind of configurable. Generally it works fine in my experience (most apps I use are not made for tablets).
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk

3)Tested a 720p 2,36gb mkv and played smooth with diceplayer (not-free). But when you turn hdmi out the subtitles doesn't show on the tv. Maybe not a big problem for you ..
5) Apps works perfect in my experience, i didn't notice that someones are not made for tablets

Need all your Help to push MS / avi transcoding issue

Hi Everyone,
I m kindly asking you to help me push MS into fixing the avi/xvid issue since conversion times are too long.
edit Several members have also raised concern that the Zune software transcodes videos where there is really no need!

I have created a post on the official MS support forums and the fellow users have supported the post but MS is trying not to give a proper answer on the issues unless people reply enough or click the "I would like an answer too" button. The post seems to be ending up unanswered and pushed back. I need to let the post grab MS attention!
I would like MS to escalate the issue internally but I need more input! So please be so kind!
I suggest that we could do this for other issues as well!!!
Their forum relies on Live IDs so it is just about entering your username. (Doesn't take long)

It can be fixed quite easily.
1) Write down the spec of your computer on a piece of paper.
2) Go to your local PC shop
3) Hand them the piece of paper and ask for something faster at encoding video
4) Happiness
Yep. Crap computers suck at transcoding video. Even a better graphics card would work much better, since lots of GPUs these days can offload much of the conversion.
Some notebooks were sold without multi-core processors (but are still 64-bit, some people assume 64-bit = multi-core), and lots of consumers have things like mismatched ram sticks and the like that can reduce their computer performance for these types of tasks.
Thanks a lot guys!!!! Appreciated!
It looks like they are still ignoring the issue. I think I might try to upvote the thread tomorrow again.
My general issue is that I am accessing different PCs all the time. Let it be work, uni, friends, or my home laptop. So I generally just need a fast way to get stuff onto the device.
Maybe we get lucky and they enable it again
I personally don't think this issue should have a high priority, as Zune software reencode your file on the fly.
Even at Microsoft, ressources are limited, and there are lots a other stuff I would like first (custom ringtones, multitask, silverlight and flash on the browser...)
My 2 cents.

The issue here is that it works on the Zune HD without re encoding or demuxing and the same applied to the wp7 emulator until they decided to take the feature out...
Maybe it will be a OEM specific feature?!
Name one reason for DivX /XviD support, except that you want to play your pirated movies...
Transcoding XviD shouldn't take much time with a modern computer.
Why do they have to be pirated? There are those of us who have huge DVD/BD libraries ripped to xvid (and later on MKV). Personally I have several hundred DVDs that I have painstakingly converted to xvid for digital storage and easy access from my HTPCs.

You could make the same assumption about mp3s. I started ripping in 99.. I don't have the resources to rerip my music into something better now. And in a real case scenario I don't want to be told 2 years from now that an MP3 player doesn't play mp3s anymore because they are "all" considered to be pirated .....
I have pleny of DVD's/BD that on top of normal movie have a digital copy that can be used with portable players. They come in many formats on those discs and all require to enter a code before 1st play so it can check if it is valid copy.
I do that and then can play them on my PC even via Zune. Formats I have are WMV, AVI, MP4 and DIVX.
My death race in wmv that works on windows 7 fresh install (with no extra codes and net access) is converted by zune. Annoying as zune officially supports WMV and even plays that movie.
Two mp4 movies (Mummy and Mummy 2) from the same Box set one just copies and works one is converted from mp4 to mp4. Some Divx movies are "converted" but it lasts 1 to 2 min aka it only changes extension while some are properly reconverted but resolution or quality are the same afterwards (720p or standard resolution no matter). There is a problem there.

[Q] Considering purchase of a Xoom, but I have questions

Hi everyone,
I've been toying with the idea of purchasing a Xoom since it was announced, but before launching myself into a 500$+ purchase, I would like to make sure the device does what I expect it to.
Here is a short list of what I am looking for in a tablet. If possible, could you guys tell me if the Xoom fits my needs.
Microsoft Exchange support
If yes, can I add multiple Exchange accounts? Support for calendars as well?
Video Playback
I watch a lot of 350MB (xvid) and 1.09Gb (mkv) tv shows. Is there a good player that supports playback? Is playback choppy/laggy or loses audio sync? I've seen and read a lot of bad press on this.
Video playback is potentially a deal maker/breaker. Video has to be smooth, and I'd like to avoid having to re-encode video if I dont have to. If a made in china device like the superpad can read MKV files, why not a dual core beast?
Tethering
I have an iPhone 3G and a tethering plan. I can tether to my laptop. Will I be able to tether to the XOOM?
SAMBA/SMB Share navigation
Can I browse network shares stored on my computer? Can I provide logon credentials to browse shares for a domain network? (Ex : DOMAIN\userassword or user(at)domain.localassword). Can I stream video over Wifi and network shares?
VPN
Is there support for L2TP over IPSEC? Certificate or PSK?
I'm quite computer savvy, it just seems difficult to get facts straight on tablets these days.
Thank you all in advance for reading this and taking the time to reply.

A quick set of answers for you:
Exchange support - Yes
Calendars - Yes
Video Playback - unfortunately I can't answer that but I'm sure it won't be a problem with all the available apps and answers from other users regarding HD playback/re-encoding/compression
Tethering - Yes, works a treat...I'm doing it from my HTC Desire and Laptop.
SAMBA/SMB - Yes, 'Cifs Manager' from th Android Marketplace is a doddle to use. Streaming video/audio via wifi and network shares is easy.
VPN - not sure
Hope that helps.
Video playback - Yes, moboplayer
VPN - Yes openvpn just look around the fourms
Be aware that not everything (like openvpn) - will work out of the box. You will need to do some work, and possibly void the devices warranty (Unlock/root)
Costco has 90 days .... to return if you have one... Or can Order on line
(As I did)
Thats the way I went thanks and good luck

How good of a playback are we talking about. I've been reading a lot of people (on these forums and other places as well) who are having problems playing back some video files. Stuttering, laggy, things like that.
I'm going to be using this device for personal use first and work second, so smooth video playback is important and is probably the biggest reason for the purchase of a xoom.
For VPN, I've been digging around and found a thread on the xoomforums dot com website (I cant post a link yet, I'm too green). Note that I plan to use L2TP over IPSEC, and not pure IPSEC to connect to a VPN. Apparently there is native support for that without the need for OpenVPN.
Also, does anyone know if there is a Remote Desktop app so I can connect and control windows 7/vista PCs from the tablet?
Thanks to everyone for the replies!

350MB (xvid) ---> play beautifully using moboplayer
1.09Gb (mkv) ---> choppy as **** on any player or if the video plays smoothly, the audio is non existant.
Im assuming these are "borrowed" videos downloaded from the internet.
I just use Handbrake to convert files to my Android devices. I just run into too many problems otherwise.
And if you are trying to play MKV files with subtitles. I've found no solution for that. Rockplayer kinda works if it's 480p or less. Though sometimes the audio gets out of sync.
If the subs are in text (srt) format, HB should move them over. If they're bitmaps (vobsub/pgs) or have styles (ass/ssa/smi), they can't be converted w/o an intervening translation/OCR step, since MP4 container only accepts plain text subs.
MKV->MP4 conversion is OK if you don't watch foreign films and don't care about subs. It's a PITA otherwise.
Do a search for 'Remote Desktop' on the market place...there are a handful which all work great. I can verify blistering speeds connecting to Windows 7 (32 and 64-bit)

The Xoom can't decompress the audio at all? I'm not a huge fan of re-encoding video and I perfer to just drag and drop to play videos, my Desire can just about keep 20-25 fps playing 350Mb HD video, 20 minute anime series, the audio is fine as well. Why can't the Xoom play a 1Gb file with it's dual core CPU?
*edit* That's my Desire playing MKV's, not AVI etc.
For what its worth I just tested an 840mb mkv file on moboplayer and it was flawless, no issues with audio at all. I haven't tried anything over 1gb though.

[Q] What software can I use to encode videos?

Anyone know an encoder that will easily let me encode videos for the transformers specs? Or Xoom of course since they're basically the same.
I've heard good things about HandBrake. I think someone at Xoom Forum has a profile built for Xoom, should work for TF as well.
I've been using the dvd catalyst xoom presets for my encoding. One thing to be mindful of is that the xoom's lower quality screen may mean some shortcuts are taken when re-encoding which could lose colour quality which although not visible on the xoom could be visible on the transformer (I can't complain at what I see from the HQ xoom oreset though).

I haven't transcoded from DVD in forever. Back then I relied primarily on Nero and WinAvi for most of my needs, but Handbrake was an excellent and free solution. Winavi is great if you don't mind the added step of converting it to a format the TF can handle. Freemake is a great converter for already encoded stuff.

+1 for DVD Catalyst. I believe DVDCatalyst is his username here & they answer all emails very quickly too.

I'm a fan of DVDFab. (Despite the name, it not only rips your own personal DVDs, but also does video format conversion, as well as Blu-Ray ripping.)
testing different handbrake settings atm since I really dont want to pay for a video encoder when I just put down half a grand for transformer and dock.

It's currently $9.95 & well worth it but I understand. I prefer it over HB, TBH. There is a free DVD Catalyst version but not sure how its compared to the paid version.
Read on some other forum where some Asus guy was recommending FreeMake, found here: http://www.freemake.com/
Apparently you should use the Apple TV 720p settings for the best results.
It should be pointed out that freemake and dvdcatalyst are for Windows, and handbrake is for macs. I have both types of machine, but tend to use the mac for dloading.
I tried to convert a high profile copy of the Godfather 2 last night on Handbrake. It worked fine, but wouldn't convert when the srt sub file was included for some reason, so I had to watch on the Asus with airvideo running simultaneously on my iPhone for scenes in italian!
I may try Miro video and see how that goes.

Handbrake is available for Windows (as well as several other OS's)
http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php
Handbrake works fine and is a great free solution. While I don't have a transformer yet, I use handbrake all the time to convert videos for my Evo and Nook Color.
I've been using handbrake on Win7 x64 for a while now encoding for Xoom.
I played with diff setting to try and get the best quality for the smallest file size.
Overall I'd say -
1. Output file is always lower Qty, then preEncode file no matter what!!
2. Best results I got using H264 baseline profile with an input file rez matched for the Xoom screen (1280x720 or 1280x800).
3. A quick way to get a seasonable output file is to set handbrake setting to output a file size instead of FR. I use 700MB or 800MB for files I do not rip myself.
Cheers,
fifo
Hmmm surfed into this post from google... tried handbrake but I seem to be getting files bigger than the original.....
I'm trying to convert 720p AVI to run on my Xoom....
Anyone got a good preset they could share or a decent program recommendation ?
Have a look here -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321859&highlight=encode+video
I use meGUI, its a profile based video compression software, but also you can adjust plug-ins and more video improvements...
at sourceforge megui
Its free.
Also I use Elgato Turbo 264.HD, its a mac only hardaware, but simple as drag and drop...

[Q] How far can I go in replacing my desktop with my Xoom?

I am looking to possibly go on an extended business trip (two months for a particular project), and was contemplating taking one of my desktops or possibly buying a laptop. But it occurred to me that I might be overlooking an obvious answer.
While I obviously won't be doing Photoshop work on my Xoom, it occurs to me that if I get the dock that I should be able to playback to the HDMI that is likely to be on the TV in my room. Already have a Bluetooth keyboard so doing some work even on documents and presentations isn't likely to be THAT difficult. So the remaining question is can I get the Xoom to talk to my 4TB external USB 2.0 drive for saving files and playing back video? Or is that taking things too far?
Thanks in advance!
From what I have seen, you will need to wait to install a custom kernel to get USB mass storage to work because HC 3.1 doesnt yet support that. So that means you will need root. But once you have done that it is doable
Now if your still using 3.0.1 then install timat 1.4.1 using kernel manager and check out this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020174
Also you have to consider the limitations on the Tegra2 video playback, to put it in a simple way, won't play your hi quality mkv's without the need of re-encoding the video. And that you can't do on the xoom
For the other things its awesome, I also have a BT keyboard with pointer and was really nice sitting somewhat far from the xoom and browse the internet or watch youtube on the LCD. Also played some PSX games and some Game Cube to test for lag or anything, not bad at all.
as stated above if you get the 3.1 update you would be able to use your HDD

[Q] Surface RT - [app] ffmpeg0.6

Noob, so I cant post this where it actually belongs..
So I thought to give Surface RT a chance and bought one. I still have my iPad on the side, and I would like to get rid of it, if RT works for my purposes. Now I have few issues with mi new shiny device.
Question 1:
I have managed to "install" jailbreak and use some of those nice Desktop apps ported to Windows RT.
But I cant/dont know how to use ffmpeg0.6.
I have installed it, but when launching app it tells me about missing dll file. What can I do about it? There is no GUI?
Question 2:
I use Internet Explorer to watch some live hockey streams that are Flash based (also available on html5), but it seems to be somewhat too laggy. Is there something that might fix that?
Question 3:
Almost all my video files are AVIs and playback is terrible. Very low fps and stuttering audio and video. I have tried several media players from Microsoft Store but same issue with them all. Around 700 Mb *.avi files are not working properly and this could be a dealbreaker with this device for me... Is RTs processor just too weak, or is there someting that might fix this issue?
