Question about updating to newer beta of CM7 by Genesis - Motorola Triumph

Hi All,
I am good with computers but I am little noob when it comes to mobile rooting
I was able to install CM7 beta by Genesis3 simply by following instructions.
Can anyone please confirm that if I wanted to upgrade to newer release I just need to get all files to SD card and install them using CWM.
Thanks,
Jack

What I do is wipe cache and delvik cache (under advanced) and then flash the updated version of cm7 which should be on the root of SD card.

You should wipe /system (under advanced) then flash the new version, then flash gapps, then reboot.
Do a backup first!!

He just released a new update today, may be his final release. Look at "android forums". I noticed for this phone, those forums are a little more updated.

Thanks guys for your replies.
Actually i did same thing (clear catch & factory reset) to install other versions
And yes,i can always restore my original system from my backup ...

Help a newbie?

Hi Guys,
Apologies if the following seems easy but I'm new to the rooting scene. Had an iPhone for a while and jailbroke on several occasions but never rooted an android before.
I have a desire S which I would like to root. Here's my plan of action.
1)S-off using alpharevx
2)Download and run ginger break to get root
3)download and install the free application rom manager from android market to flash CWM
5) Use rom manager to perform first full (Nandroid) backup
6) Wipe as per instructions for LBC Mod
7) Flash with LBC Mod
I attained that information on another thread. Here's my questions/concerns:
1. What is CWM? What does it do? Is it the same as ext4?
2. What is the Nandroid backup for? Where does it backup to?
3. Is the LBC Mod any good? Any other recommendations?
4. Will my SD card be wiped during this?
5. Is any of this flashing my radio? What does it mean to flash the radio? Do I need to do it?
6. Any way to backup apps during this? all my contacts and calendars are synced with google so not concerned about those.
I appreciate any and all help If I'm feeling confident enough I'm going to give this a go when I get home from work.

In all honesty you could have used google for a great deal of this, especially CWM and Nandroid backup!
1) CWM (clock work mod) is a recovery program that permits you to perform advance functions (ie backups, restores, formats and flash roms etc) on your device that you wouldnt be able to do with Android alone. Ext4 is an improved version of CWM built from the same code base, which is easier to use and offers more functionality.
2) A nandroid backup is simply a full backup of your device. that you can restore at a later time, including everything except the SD card.
3) I like LBC MOD that’s why I use it.
4) No sd will not be wiped, but everything elseon the device will.
5) None of these steps flashes your radio. The radio is the software on your device that controls your phones interaction with the mobile network and wi-fi. You should only upgrade your radio if its advised in the ROM installation instructions or your experiencing problems. Flashing a radio is in theory more dangerous than flashing a rom.
6) You can backup apps, by using an application like Titanium Backup but its not advised when moving from one ROM to another completely differing one, like you are from stock to LBC.
Good luck

Thanks for the help - feeling a bit more confident about this now
so much for feeling confident
I have attained S-OFF no problems but cant get gingerbreak to work.
Have tried a couple of times. Once it just hung at "rooting" for a long long time so i cancelled it.
Then I thought it was successful as the phone rebooted but ROM Manager is telling me there is no superuser available. What could I be doing wrong?
EDIT: formatted the SD card and tried gingerbreak again.. Success!! Now for some ROM fun......

Did you actually use an app to test if you have root?
Because it's normal that gingerbreak gives you an error and tells you to reboot.
Do you have superuser after trying?

That's exactly what happened to me but still managed superuser.
Also when I tried to use RomManager it wouldn't work with EXT4, I had to flash CWM instead.
Im rooted now and running LBC custom ROM but I cant download anything from the marketplace - I get a download was unsuccessful errors.
Anyone know how to fix this? Ive tried fixing permissions, signing into goggle talk, stopping the market process but nothing is working.
You may wanna checkout the cyanogenmod rom created recently, it is remarkably stable and fast. There's a thread in the dev section with links and instructions.

Only problems are:
-Bluetooth not working
-battery usage
Since the rom is only a few days old I expect these will be solved pretty soon.

Custom ROM Issue?

Okay I'll summarise this as best as I can, I'm new to Android but not to computers and Linux. I got a china 7" Telechips 8901 Tablet 2.1 and I decided to install the custom Rom on Team Telechips website, I know I should have backed up The Stock ROM but I didn't, After installing the Rom it turned out to be Cyanogenmod and everything was fine except that the touch screen was opposite. So I thought what the hell I might as well try the second ROM on the team telechips website which was HSG-X5A one and now the Tablet doesn't start up anymore, It just shows the Logo and goes blank, I had Clockworkmod in there but I can't boot into the the recovery console, Nothing happens when hold those two buttons. So I tried using ADB from windows to boot into it but nothing happens. I can back up the Stock ROM from somebody else's Tablet but if since can't enter the recovery how can I install it. When I tried to adb push anything into nand, it says can not copy, read-only.
Help me please
I feel you may have bricked your device because you installed roms on top of roms. Did you wipe anything before installing these custom roms?
Welcome to forums
Moved to proper section, please read the forum rules before posting.
Yeah I kinda guessed that. No I did not wipe anything before the update. Is there anyway out of this? I can't seem to access the nand and sdcard through adb.

Okay I was able to use adb to wipe everything. What to do next?
Now if I do anything all I keep getting is exec 'system/bin/sh' failed no such file or directory (2)
Did you run a wipe through recovery and did not just delete files through adb?
Sounds like it is looking for a system file that got deleted. Was this after you tried reinstalling the rom?

No I don't have access to recovery. I ran the wipe all through adb wipe all. Now even after I wiped everything I still don't have access to recovery. How do I now install the system file? All I can use is adb and I have the zip file for the rom.
Also it seems that the /system folder is all I have access to via adb after remount. Is there anything or any file(s) I can push in there as to be able to then enter recovery and install the rom?
whats really going on?
hello, i'm new here and know im not suppose to be posting this here but but i need to post something 10x before i can post where i really want to. i really want to be able to post in the epic 4g asc ics thread.. really good rom no problems for me.the only thing missing is the theme from 3.5. im on 4.0 and having trouble pushing the apk's. i have a question, should i continue to figure out how to push or just wait for an update?
I'm so proud of myself right now, I was able to do this using the FWDN tool. It's the best, Once you know how to use it, there is really nothing it can't do. I learned how to use it with this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-q1c88qu7JI.
Best of luck to whoever has this problem as well now or in the future.

[SOLVED] System Software Update is Corrupted

I have been waiting for a while to get the OTA update to ICS on my Sensation XE and finally got it today in the UK. When i come to download and install the update it will download fine but as soon as its finished it says "The downloaded system software update is corrupted" and the only options are to download again or do nothing and stick with gingerbread - i don't really want to do either of those. I have tried to download the update about 20 times now with the same result!
I have found something on another forum who said a factory reset is the only cure for this but as i am not rooted or anything like that I cant properly backup my apps using titanium backup so i will lose all my progress in my games and stuff so I really don't want to do this unless I absolutely have no other choice.
I was wondering if anyone else on here has had this problem and found a way around it without doing a hard reset. I have already taken the battery out and left it for a while but that did nothing either.
Thanks in advance!
If u can't backup coz u r not rooted - move sensitive apps to SD (then ur personal data like saves in games is moved to sd), and then use "Apps Backup & Restore" app to backup all apk's from installed apps to sd. Then, backup ur SMS using system core feature from MEssages > Menu > BAck-up messages
That should be enough for you. But in my opinion you should do CLEAR install, and again after ICS update wipe to factory settings, because without this - phone is useless, believe me.
I hope my english is understandable

I have already done the SMS backup but not the app back up. I was wondering if the app you suggested to back up apps re links the apps back to the market once they have been restored like titanium backup does it?
I was also hoping someone could tell me if they have had to do a factory reset to solve the problem because I don't want to do a reset to find it hasn't solved the problem.
Thanks

Cheers eddy.
For doing this do I need to be s off and root with a custom recovery or is flashing a ruu different so I just have to put it somewhere and trick the phone into flashing it?
I think I'll do this method if doing a factory reset doesn't work as I'll be doing a fresh install anyway.
As Far As I know, to RUU you won't have to have S-OFF and Custom Recovery. Because if you installed Custom Recovery it will replace with the default HTC Recovery.
If you planned to have S-OFF later I would you recommend you to do it before upgrade, because I think right now no body have release out on how to get S-OFF on HTC's ICS yet.
Have you try to used different Micro SDCard before try to download the upgrade.
If you have a stock XE then the XE RUU is fine without S-OFF. Here's the link:
http://www.filefactory.com/file/3aa...00U_11.22.3504.07_M_release_251961_signed.exe
As said above, S-OFF whilst still on 2.3 as you can't S-OFF with the new 1.27 HBOOT YET (it's coming soon, though). Then flash the RUU and you keep S-OFF

[Q] Help please

Hello, I am brand new here and I have to a serious problem with my galaxy s3 (verizon). Today I rooted and installed clockwork recovery and created a backup within the app everything seemed to well and I rebooted. Then I noticed I could get custom roms in clockwork mod and tried getting cyanogen mod for it. Downloaded and continued to install. Then when it booted I got a cyanogen mod boot screen loop . So I said ok and went to recovery and tried to restore my phone from the backup I made only to find that "no files were found" in clockwork recovery. So at this point I just want my phone to boot up and work with my data on it. Is there a way to remove cyanogen mod or even use my backup that was created and in fact does take up space on my sd card but can't seem to find. I thanks in advance .
Ok after some searching it seems that I have forgotten to do something with the boot.img file in the zip. If someone could give me instructions on what to do with it I would really appreciate it. Lol I know most of you are pulling your hair out about my mistakes but hopefully this can be resolved soon.

I have not. But if I do that that means I lose everything correct and cannot get it back? Or is there a way I can do a restore after I wipe and I get it back? After looking at this question I realize it sounds dumb lol. Also I just did this using a download from clockwork mod and after I did it I looked back at cyanogen mods website and there are more steps involved such as flashing certain files (which was not done because I did not know) I though if I downloaded it from clockwork mod that was the only step I had to take.

You have to clean install you can't just flash roms over each other. That was the reason for your bootloop and nope bud you've most likely have to clean install now. That backup should be somewhere if just click restore and it should find your backup?

[Q] Need emergency help to unbrick Galaxy 3 GT-i5801.

I have been using Samsung Galaxy 3 GT-i5801 for 2 years now.. It was having Android 2.1. Today I decided to install custom ROM to upgrade to Android 2.3.7. Used the below steps in the process:
1. Rooted the device using SuperOneClick
2. Installed ClockworkMode ROM manager 4.3.3.0. Installed G3RM as well.
3. I could not take the backup. G3RM when tried to open was opening a html code when i clicked the options. ClockworkMode did not have the option for Galaxy 3.
4. Downloaded the CM7.2.0-GT-i5800_Alpha8.3_CWM.zip from google code pages for cm7-i5800 (92.2 MB in size).
5. Copied the zip file to the base directory of SD card and renamed it to update.zip. Using CWM wiped the data/factory reset. Phone rebooted to Android 2.1 with all data erased.
6. Then I updated the ROM using CWM. It didn't throw any errors. Mobile rebooted. But it gets stuck in opening screen forever (display contains just GT-I5801 and Samsung). I assume this is a soft brick. As I recollect now, I forgot to clear the cache before the upgrade. Will this be a problem?
7. Tried to recover using Power + Vol Up+ Vol Down + Menu combination. This process is also stuck with a message "FORCED UPLOAD by KEY PRESSING".
8. I suspect the device is bricked now.
I am new to android ROM updates. I am looking forward for your help to unbrick the device now. Please suggest me the steps to unbrick the device (Or a link which i should follow).
Regards,
Shreekanth
At Step 7, try use ODIN and flash a Rom through it. Theres a guide somewhere on this forum. It should help save your.. Oh wait. I think you have to get a special i5801 ROM, but I might be wrong.
My phone does not boot up now.. Will it be possible to use ODIN to flash a ROM at this stage? Before step 6, I had cleared the wiped the data / factory reset using CWM. That time it rebooted to Android 2.1. Later i copied the ROM and tried the ROM update. I am facing the problem since then.
Since the display turns on, I assume this is kind of soft brick. So hoping for a fix. I am searching the entire forum for any possible answer. Please help me with your suggestions.
