[Q] Lost CWM and Root

I need some help either getting root restored or getting CWM back. I rooted my G2X using the SuperOneClick method, did a nandroid backup of the original ROM, and then installed a CM7.1 nightly. After doing so, I found out that I no longer have root (or that the su binaries are corrupt) and there are a ton of issues with the currently CM7.1 nightly ROMs. I really just want to get back to the stock ROM that I have a nandroid of. When I do actually get to the Android Recovery screen, it sits at "Formatting MISC:..." and I can't select any other options (not sure what that's all about). I have tried rooting again, but I get errors saying things like "chmod: no such tool".
Does anyone know another way to get into CWM, know how to restore root, or have an alternative to restore a nandroid backup?

I had the same problem when updating from virtuous vision (froyo) to virtuous visioin unity. 2hat solved the issue for me was uninstalling SU and reinstalling it from the market.
Not shure if this'll solve it for you though.

Grab titanium backup from the market, it'll let you uninstall it from system.

Yup, nvflash CWM is your best bet at this point. Disregard the titanium suggestion.

Same exact thing happened to me. ROM Manager says I have CWM 3.0.2.7 current, but I can't reboot into recovery, restore any backups, fix permissions, etc. I noticed it when I tried to re-flash CM7 nightly #37 because my wifi was stuck at "obtaining IP address" and I was getting 3 or 4 force close notifications at startup. Installed root check and it said "root access is not properly configured or was not granted. SU binary not found in the system declared PATH."
Going to try nvflash CWM and go from there. Hoping to get this beast running proper!

Opening X? Which rom did you flash? That's not CM7 ... maybe Faux's AOSP rom?

People just need to stop tinkering with their phone's software if they don't know what they're doing. They screw something up and come crying back here for help. Now, I know we were all 'noobs' at one point... But at least put the effort into reading up on details and be at least 90% certain you know what to do, before you eff anything up. Seriously guys. We can help, but you shouldn't be doing this sort of stuff if you aren't up for it yet!
I know all of us, the more seasoned geeks, have had multiple android devices so we know our way around. And we were in the same boat as you once too... Learning the basics and all that. But don't be flashing roms and/or kernels if you don't know what adb is. #justsaying.
Now, for your problem. I'm not even sure if you used NVFlash to flash a recovery. And if your getting weird errors while booting into recovery, flash it again. Once in recovery all you have to do is restore your back up, simple as that. There's no need to flash other roms. Now, if you used ROM Manager to flash your recovery... Then your nandroid is probably stored on your internal SD. And if you have an external SD recovery then you can't get at it. Maybe I missed something but I'm not sure if that's even the problem. But there is a stock/rooted nandroid here in the dev section, copy that to the proper location on your external SD and proceed to restore that.
Try that first before you flash anything, It seems most logical to me at least

I found these instructions on using nvflash to reflash CWM recovery (link below). It worked like a charm for me- but I had a backup from just after I rooted. After restoring it to original (rooted), I wiped and reflashed the latest CM7 nightly #61 with gapps. You can probably just flash the latest nightly instead of going back to original like I did.

What are the advantages of root without custom rom

just a short question.. what are the advantages of having a rooted phone if one doesn't want to install a custom rom?
- Can I remove all the crap-ware that was delivered with the phone? e.g. Navigation
- Can I still get the HTC-OTA Updates?
- Can I use the market as usual?

Yes, you can remove bloat ware and still use market, but not sure about ota updates
You'll also be able to perform full nandroid backups of your device
With extra addition of a new kernel you'll be able to over clock cpu.

the qestion i ask myself here: why wouldnt you want to flash a custom rom, when having the ability to do so?
im currently running lbc mod and im very happy with it
plus it seems to me that the roms that are out now are just the beginning!

why would I change? stock rom does what I need it to do.. if I find a reason I can still change...

You should at least try a custom ROM before you decide to stay on shipped stock, you can always re-stock by running an RUU.
You'll find that a good custom, I personally like LBC MOD is simply a faster, improved, better looking version of stock with less bugs and added functionality.
Otherwise its like buying a car and never using the top gear.

What people don't seem to realise sometimes is that there is a difference between S-off and rooting. With the old Desire it was root first then S-off, which was a safer environment for a noob or the perpetually impetuously stupid. Root gives you Administrator access, like on a PC rather than a guest account, but S-off allows total control over system and data partitions for instance and a whole shed full of stuff that even some dev's don't regularly need. Be careful with S-off!

If you install a custom you shouldn't apply OTA updates. The person who created the custom ROM in the first place will often incorporate the OTA updates within the next release of their ROM.
No RUU, is a ROM Update Utility which is a program that you run on your PC to install a ROM. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002506
Although to be able to try a custom you must first use the AlphaRexv software to make your phone S-OFF.
If you then wish to take a backup of your stock you will additionally need to install a recovery like clock work mod (CWM) or the EXT4 one as you listed above. You will also need to use the ginger break software to get root on your phone before you can take a full useful backup (a Nandroid backup).
Yes after installing custom you would need to install all applications.
I suggest that you use the appbrain site and the application to manage your market applications..its assists re-installs.
I also would suggest that you don't rush into any of this.....you should read around the forum for a few more days until you are perfectly happy with what you are doing, ask more questions if needed.

The HTC OTA is not expecting you to be rooted. STEP AWAY FROM THE OTA!
An RUU is a HTC's Routine User Utility and they are what HTC's techies use to fix phones, RUU's are easy to administer but it will wipe EVERYTHING of your phone, data, your rom, your Hboot, some of them will even change your radio. EVERYTHING. Use an RUU and you will no longer be rooted or S-off.

Your welcome.
As for flashing roms; you may as well try one. At the moment all roms bar one that I can find use Sense, so all shouldn't look that different from HTC stock. Miui is the exception, it is AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and looks radically different from what your used too.
Just do a Nandroid back up, then you can always wipe and restore.

RUU=ROM Upgrade Utility. It's just a way of flashing stock ROM to phone via usb connection with pc.

And a follow up.. sd-card contents are not backuped and also not overwritten when installing custom roms? But I still need to reinstall the apps on there?

yes sd card contents are not backed up
& you need to reinstall the apps from your sd card,the apps from the old rom are replaced with the apps from the new rom

You can do 1 and 3, I don't think you can do 2 if you remove the udpate file from the ROM.

After rooting I still receive OTA updates (Arabic support)
Will there be any effect if I install it?

ok, so i've read what i think i need to root and install a custom ROM (i think i want to try eagles blood 2.8 first http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124522)
just got my G2x on Monday and it has GB 2.3.3 but i have not checked if it has an update and not sure i want to update it first, but that is my question.
should i do an update first before i do anything else or does it even matter? i mean i will root, then do a backup, then install the ROM, right? so it shouldnt matter if the phone is the latest and greatest from LG or T-Mobile as i will be overwriting it anyway...at least that is how i think it works
also i have seen where people are saying to wipe everything (or at least a few folders), how is that done? just delete what is in the folders or is there a tool to wipe said data?

No OTA updates are available, but is unnecessary anyway. Also, no need to root if you want to flash these roms as they already have root access. Flash clockworkmod (search for the thread on that) then flash the rom you want. All the instructions are there.

Yes, OTA is "over the air". And just so you know, make sure you follow those nvflash steps EXACTLY as written. What you are choosing to flash, however, is the completely stock (although rooted) version of android 2.3.3 that you already have on your phone. This is fine, but after you get cwm you can flash any custom rom you find within the development section as well. I recommend at least choosing cm7 because the stock rom sucks.

This one. It's actually linked as the first step in your thread. This is the important one. Read it over a couple times first, and maybe watch some videos too.
Everything after that step in your thread is basically how to flash a custom rom. They are just choosing a rooted version of stock as their example.

i rooted , clockworked , backed up the phone then copied the int and ext sd roms to my pc. installed titanium and backed up all the apps in the stock rom i thought i might want to keep. ( mostly the nova demo and need for speed) . copy your rom contents over so if you mistakenly format your sd card you can still return the phone to stock. ( don't ask i did it ) tryed cm7 stable. liked it but had sleep of death issues. returned the phone to stock . messed with the stock apps and root explorer backed everything up again. and now im ruing weapon r and love it. no stutter and smooth as a hot knife going thru butter and no sleep of death! and USB works every time. even love the loader he used.

that looks good. don't for get to copy off the internal and external sd chips and keep that data safe. when you made your backup in clockwork it stored it on the internal chip. titanium by default i be leave uses the external. if any thing goes wrong, as long as you have access to those backups and can boot to clockwork you can get your phone working.

The h is the same as 4g. There are mods to change those icons that can be found on xda. As far as the status bar, I think that setting is located somewhere in the tablet tweaks menu.

but now i have a bigger problem. i dont seem to have any network access now, 4g, 3g, edge, nothing. i can make calls and send texts, but no data. should i start a new thread?

Occasionally on cm7 based roms data will drop out and u need to reboot to bring it back...if u haven't already, try a reboot.

Yeah that's it. How are you liking the rom? Bear in mind that now you have root access you can do all sorts of customizations. You can flash kernels that allow for overclocking or underclocking, use titanium backup (recommended) to preserve all apps and app data, modify boot animations and status bar icons, basically anything you want. Enjoy!

im liking it so far, and yeah i understand about root access, i've done linux admin and use debian at home, so im really liking this, its kind of like running debian now instead of ubuntu or mint, getting rid of all the junk that gets piled on top of the pure OS!
im sure i will try other ROMs as well and maybe other kernels. do those install the same way? using ROM Manager?

now that yore rooted and have clockwork you can flash things safely
just remember to backup, and to wipe the davik cache its in advanced menu.
try weapon r and then add the update new clip to it , its smooth and no bugs so far fro me.

[SOLVED] System Software Update is Corrupted

I have been waiting for a while to get the OTA update to ICS on my Sensation XE and finally got it today in the UK. When i come to download and install the update it will download fine but as soon as its finished it says "The downloaded system software update is corrupted" and the only options are to download again or do nothing and stick with gingerbread - i don't really want to do either of those. I have tried to download the update about 20 times now with the same result!
I have found something on another forum who said a factory reset is the only cure for this but as i am not rooted or anything like that I cant properly backup my apps using titanium backup so i will lose all my progress in my games and stuff so I really don't want to do this unless I absolutely have no other choice.
I was wondering if anyone else on here has had this problem and found a way around it without doing a hard reset. I have already taken the battery out and left it for a while but that did nothing either.

If u can't backup coz u r not rooted - move sensitive apps to SD (then ur personal data like saves in games is moved to sd), and then use "Apps Backup & Restore" app to backup all apk's from installed apps to sd. Then, backup ur SMS using system core feature from MEssages > Menu > BAck-up messages
That should be enough for you. But in my opinion you should do CLEAR install, and again after ICS update wipe to factory settings, because without this - phone is useless, believe me.

I have already done the SMS backup but not the app back up. I was wondering if the app you suggested to back up apps re links the apps back to the market once they have been restored like titanium backup does it?
I was also hoping someone could tell me if they have had to do a factory reset to solve the problem because I don't want to do a reset to find it hasn't solved the problem.

Get the ICS RUU from the shipped roms thread and flash that. OK, you lose your data but at least it's a 100% fresh install

For doing this do I need to be s off and root with a custom recovery or is flashing a ruu different so I just have to put it somewhere and trick the phone into flashing it?
I think I'll do this method if doing a factory reset doesn't work as I'll be doing a fresh install anyway.

As Far As I know, to RUU you won't have to have S-OFF and Custom Recovery. Because if you installed Custom Recovery it will replace with the default HTC Recovery.
If you planned to have S-OFF later I would you recommend you to do it before upgrade, because I think right now no body have release out on how to get S-OFF on HTC's ICS yet.
Have you try to used different Micro SDCard before try to download the upgrade.

If you have a stock XE then the XE RUU is fine without S-OFF. Here's the link:

As said above, S-OFF whilst still on 2.3 as you can't S-OFF with the new 1.27 HBOOT YET (it's coming soon, though). Then flash the RUU and you keep S-OFF

You f#%king beauty xaqi!!! Another sd card worked. If I could hug you I would!!! I really wasn't wanting to flash anything or do anything extra to it. So I'm presuming if I was to format my sd card that would work as well...

your question is ambiguous please elaborate.

i want to try a rom by starskyrob fox star 1.4.0.
dont know what tb backs up and did a batch backup and now everthing in backup/restore is gone. i used cwm to backup curent rom. think that is called a nandroid backup. after all the reading i still dont all the way get the installing new rom procedure.
will my contacts be there. and photos. should i partition my sd card. where why is my usb staorage full. etc etc. i love the fact i can do these things with my phone. i just dont want to jump the gun, i am not the type person who likes to do anything unless i tried my best to fig out what i am doing first.
i dont even know if i am using xda the right way. if not i am sorry

Tb is a program that backs up ur applications and the data attached to each app. a nandroid backup ur current configuration so it saves everything from data, apps, contacts. so best bet is nand. But if ur going into another rom then tb backup that way u can restore once ur in the other rom. Btw foxstar rom isnt working i would suggest my rom *DarkKnight build 2* or reviewers rom which is based on my build 1 called *Noble series*

Right now the only working ROMs are Dark Knight and Noble.
Titanium Backup is a great tool, and will allow you to backup everything including your apps and contacts. Your pictures should be/can be saved on your external SD card, double check that.
Backing up system apps can cause issues when moving to a custom ROM, but I always backup user apps. Yes the new ROM will remove the Titanium Backup application, but the backup for us saved externally. Simply re download TB and restore, viola!

i get what your say n. and i know this will make me look like a tool,but thats ok.
i only heard about rooting a phone days ago and i found directions on rooting my phone.thanks to the pros out there. then i google my phone is rooted now what.
tb came up and cwm.
i want to try a rom for my samsung galaxy s blaze, i just dont understand the backup and rstore using tb free. and i dont unerstand completly the new rom install process. using rom manager. or from downloading one on pc. what should i wipe and not wipe. what are the do's and donts. i understand directions , alot of people had trouble getting s blaze to root but i did not cause i can follow directions. i have no more direction.

i need one walk through on my first backup and rom install. i will gadly use your rom.

where can i download your rom from with istruction ,,, people say every rom has its own install instruction. and its for galaxy s blaze right. and also what is the design of your rom. performance, batt life, etc

i downloaded and installed the first one. i followed direction though and it worked. kinda knew it was not right one so i did my backup i made and all is well. went through my first cycle. thank you all for the support and help. looking forward to flashing the right one soon.

Its a process, however once you do it enough you can flash in your sleep. You'll get there, no worries.
