I have been using Samsung Galaxy 3 GT-i5801 for 2 years now.. It was having Android 2.1. Today I decided to install custom ROM to upgrade to Android 2.3.7. Used the below steps in the process:
1. Rooted the device using SuperOneClick
2. Installed ClockworkMode ROM manager 4.3.3.0. Installed G3RM as well.
3. I could not take the backup. G3RM when tried to open was opening a html code when i clicked the options. ClockworkMode did not have the option for Galaxy 3.
4. Downloaded the CM7.2.0-GT-i5800_Alpha8.3_CWM.zip from google code pages for cm7-i5800 (92.2 MB in size).
5. Copied the zip file to the base directory of SD card and renamed it to update.zip. Using CWM wiped the data/factory reset. Phone rebooted to Android 2.1 with all data erased.
6. Then I updated the ROM using CWM. It didn't throw any errors. Mobile rebooted. But it gets stuck in opening screen forever (display contains just GT-I5801 and Samsung). I assume this is a soft brick. As I recollect now, I forgot to clear the cache before the upgrade. Will this be a problem?
7. Tried to recover using Power + Vol Up+ Vol Down + Menu combination. This process is also stuck with a message "FORCED UPLOAD by KEY PRESSING".
8. I suspect the device is bricked now.
I am new to android ROM updates. I am looking forward for your help to unbrick the device now. Please suggest me the steps to unbrick the device (Or a link which i should follow).
Regards,
Shreekanth
At Step 7, try use ODIN and flash a Rom through it. Theres a guide somewhere on this forum. It should help save your.. Oh wait. I think you have to get a special i5801 ROM, but I might be wrong.
My phone does not boot up now.. Will it be possible to use ODIN to flash a ROM at this stage? Before step 6, I had cleared the wiped the data / factory reset using CWM. That time it rebooted to Android 2.1. Later i copied the ROM and tried the ROM update. I am facing the problem since then.
Since the display turns on, I assume this is kind of soft brick. So hoping for a fix. I am searching the entire forum for any possible answer. Please help me with your suggestions.

The problem is resolved now and I am much relieved .. This time I have used ODIN. It detected the phone and now I have updated to Android 4.1.1.
A xda thread "How to use ODIN for dummies" was very helpful. Thanks a lot for all of your suggestion.

Hello..
I'm getting ERROR message everytime I try to enter the recovery mood. Its happened 2 days ago. I've tried to flash the stock ROM for several times and hoping that could correct this issue. Unfortunately, that couldn't help and leaving me dissapointed.
I noticed this issue for the first time when my device cannot process the command line "Updating BLA BLA..." during entering the recovery mood. Its stop there and nothing is happened for about more than 5 minutes until I forced it to shutdown by long pressing the power button. Then, I tried to enter the recovery mood for the second time. You guys know what happened to my device?
I predict that situation is okay until when I try to WIPE all data and encountered an error message with the red text asking me to 'use UI to format system and reboot'.
But, I still don't know what to do. I'm hoping that you guys with kind hearted to please do help me. Thanks in advance.
One more thing, please teach me how to make this flash counter mark (!) disapear......... THANKS.

Mind was replaced new mainboard.
If you cannot, I recommend you read Samsung note forum. There are thread about 'parted' command to repartition to skip bad block. Mind was success to skip and boot but lost a lot of gigabyte.

Thanks for replying to my question.. Will read the forum for sure.. Thank you.
Recently I faced the similar problem twice. The 1st time was using ODIN to flash the latest CWM and then format the DATA folder through the advance setting... solved the problem...
2 days ago, I faced the same problem again and the solution above won't help at all. I use the ODIN flashed the original Samsung firmware and do reset to default through the original recovery and it works. But I lost all my internal data in the internal memory.
So, you could try the suggestion above if it helps. Just the 2nd one WILL DELETE ALL DATA and it is UNRECOVERABLE. So you been warned. Don't blame me if you lost your multi-billion project file.

I accidentally installed busybox by CWM but it was designed for galaxy tab 10.1 instead of galaxy note 10.1. Now, the device has some problems like it does not detect the sim cart and so on. I can install new frameworks and I have CWM but nothing happens when I install new framework or wipe the device. Also, I tried a stock rom but .... .
I really need help.
sorry for bad english.
Never would have guessed busybox that is usually pretty generic and doesn't have much to do with nonroot apps would cause issues like what you seem to be experiencing.. crazy stuff but good luck!
If nothing else Odin back to newest stock using the stock Odin package that is usually found among your device "stickied" threads. I don't have a gnote but I have had many galaxy devices and Odin is the cure for all ills

Hello, I am brand new here and I have to a serious problem with my galaxy s3 (verizon). Today I rooted and installed clockwork recovery and created a backup within the app everything seemed to well and I rebooted. Then I noticed I could get custom roms in clockwork mod and tried getting cyanogen mod for it. Downloaded and continued to install. Then when it booted I got a cyanogen mod boot screen loop . So I said ok and went to recovery and tried to restore my phone from the backup I made only to find that "no files were found" in clockwork recovery. So at this point I just want my phone to boot up and work with my data on it. Is there a way to remove cyanogen mod or even use my backup that was created and in fact does take up space on my sd card but can't seem to find. I thanks in advance .
Ok after some searching it seems that I have forgotten to do something with the boot.img file in the zip. If someone could give me instructions on what to do with it I would really appreciate it. Lol I know most of you are pulling your hair out about my mistakes but hopefully this can be resolved soon.

I have not. But if I do that that means I lose everything correct and cannot get it back? Or is there a way I can do a restore after I wipe and I get it back? After looking at this question I realize it sounds dumb lol. Also I just did this using a download from clockwork mod and after I did it I looked back at cyanogen mods website and there are more steps involved such as flashing certain files (which was not done because I did not know) I though if I downloaded it from clockwork mod that was the only step I had to take.

You have to clean install you can't just flash roms over each other. That was the reason for your bootloop and nope bud you've most likely have to clean install now. That backup should be somewhere if just click restore and it should find your backup?

Bingo. Always clear delvik cache and cache when flashing. It's also good to wipe data when upgrading a Rom and a must when going to a different Rom.

1. reboot

3. delete user data
4. wipe caches
and it says # Manual Mode #

Ok, nvm looked at another xda thread and actually managed to fix it. thanks!
I went into stock recovery yesterday, after purchasing the phone to wipe cache.
I like to do this with all my new phones first.
When I pressed on wipe cache, it brought me to a menu that asked Mr what package to install, and was showing me my SD card.
I then tried to data factory reset, which from my experience with other phones acted as though it was wiping cache??
It seems the recovery has 1 to many install from SD card options, and is throwing the menu off.
Can anyone else confirm this?
From what I can see only an update would fix this.

Simple really. Whatever you want to select, just select the option above. Wipe cache is Wipe Data/Factory Reset, and Wipe Data/Factory Reset is Apply update via ADB.
So while I sit here and bask in the rays of my awesomeness, you should go and spread the word.
Excuse my overtly conceited bragging. I only got there coz of you lot anyway
