[Q] video, gaming and multitouch performance? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how is video performance? what formats and resolution does it support? does it play 1080p smoothly e.g?
and how is gaming performance on it? are heavy games like asphalt 6 or shadowgun smooth on it? is it on par with other tegra 2 tablets?
finally how is multitouch performance? how many touches does it support? no particular issues to report?

video
Up to 1080p baseline profile only, so long under hardware encode the frame rate is always smooth
gaming
Ultimately the gaming performance is quite similar to galaxy s, HTC, etc. Except larger screen and higher Res, some games may look slower.
But when come to tegra 2 games it shines. It beats any non tegra Device and graphics are somewhere console quality, again bigger screen so mobile phone tegra are faster.
touch screen
Up to 10 point touch, And I found certain games and apps like fruit ninja, pulse news are useful.

Game emulators - performance

Hi,
i just wondered about the Touch Pro's performance since it has more memory or isn't it significant enough?
Can you run PS-games smoothly?
What about SNES/GBA-games?
And with a keyboard it should be more fun to play with.
But i have heard about problems about it.
If you slide the keyboard out it automatically switches to parnoma-mode and you can't even start your programmes....
Also one further question, what do you think?
Iphone3G vs. Touch Pro
On which device will the games run more smoothly?
I have watched some youtube-vids of some ps-games on the Iphone, but it was just horribly slow.
Well considering the hardware , CPU:624mhz and a gpu, i just can't imagine that it will run better on the Pro, or?
The iPhone CPU is underclocked by a fair amount to conserve battery power.
What, really?
Even with applications on?
And what about the HTC Touch Pro, ist it also underclocked?
I have read something like about 25-30fps, and what i have watched on Youtube with Iphone, it was never 25fps.
SNES/GBA-games run fairly well on the HTC Touch pro, but still a bit slowish.
Most of the Playstation roms i tried crashed, but the few that did work also are slow.
But 25-30fps? no way - not even close. where have you read that?
I have the feeling that the 640x480 resolution sucks the performance out of a lot of games, compared to a 400mhz 320x240 device.
Also the hardware buttons are - although stylish - complete crap for playing games, so you have to use the on-screen controls or us the slide-out keyboard.
Clearly, the Touch Pro is not a gaming device
I have read it in the Diamond forum.
Can't you lower the resolution?
Hm, Perhaps i should get the Omnia with its low resolution^^
But which one has the better GPU?
I mean, all of the three have dedicated GPUs.
It's a pity because it is "only" a problem of the software (emulator).
I mean with PSP, you can run PS/SNES/GBA-games.
Has anyone tried Enigmo with the T PRO?
It's a 3D accelerated game my friend showed me on his Dell Axiom v50
Meh.
I don't wanna buy an almost 1000$ now.
Just the emulators aren't good enough.
I will buy cheap and good mobile phone and a PSP.
I thought i could get everything in one device....

With the Omnia you will definetively have better performance (lower resolution, faster cpu).

That doesn't matter for emulation, they are not using it!

It's always a great difference, if you program for a specific hardware or for an operating system. e.g. console - pc
So, how hard would it be to rewrite a current emulator to utilize a gpu? Specifically the SNES emulators, it looks like they haven't been touched in ages and they have always been generally slow.
There is a Snes emulator that uses the Diamond GPU...
there is? do you have a link/name of the emulator?

It's just not fair to say that and not tell us what that emulator is, LOL.
I've been a little disappointed in the Touch Pro's performance with emulators - but I kind of expected that. VGA screens are very slow for emulation, though they do make games that aren't even designed for that resolution more stunning. IE - Contra for the NES looks better on my Touch Pro than my 6700 (QVGA).
However, nes on smartgear is nearly fullspeed (disappointing that it's not . . .), Turbographics is also close to fullspeed, but occasionally has jittery play. Genesis on picodrive is smooth, but not 100% speed - occasional slowdowns. CPS1 & 2 games on Finalburn are very smooth, but again - just a little too slow. I haven't gotten neo geo games to work at all for some reason.
I'd originally wanted to connect my phone to a tv and play from my couch, but I think performance would be completely too slow.

Anyone know what this emulator is? Does it exist?
I can´t remember the name but it uses open gles which should be supported because Call of Duty Open Gles version runs hw accelerated.

I got metal slug to work and it runs very well. Are they not showing up or just not running? Ghost and goblins runs smooth too.
P.S. what emulator are u using for nes?

Why do you guys always link VGA to slow? So wrong...
Dell Axim x51v has an VGA screen. Performance? Google it. And it's a PPC from 2005.
Anyway, it would be nice if someone, who played a bit with emulators, will construct a list with TP-compatible emulators.
I haven't been able to get a cache to build. I'm trying again now, so hopefully I can get even ONE neo geo game to load, LOL.
*edit: I was able to get neo geo roms to run. I don't think a cache will build with kfortouchpro running in the background. The cache builds very fast after that. Unfortunately, performance is a little sluggish with sound enabled.
For NES it's Smartgear. I payed for it (I think $10), since it has the distinction of being by far the best TG16 emulator for PPC. It also emulates gb, sms, and genesis without all sound features. Also it had been reported to work best on VGA devices.
If anyone knows the name of the SNES emulator - I know a lot of us would appreciate knowing. SNES has always been sluggish, even on faster QVGA machines.
I was wondering if remapping programs make any difference in being able to map buttons for emulators such as PocketCultMAME and pocketgnuboy. I would really like to be able to play games in portrait mode rather than in landscape. Has anyone got either of these emulators to work on the Fuze in portrait mode?
I have no prob playing gba/neogeo/snes with keyboard using kfortouchpro.
For gba, I get near-30 on some games (super robot wars, for example) while unplayable sub-5fps on others (need for speed).
Neogeo is consistently around or above 20fps (mostly action/platform, and things like marvel vs capcom work too).
Genesis works around that fps, although not the fastest.
Snes is a different story. It's much slower, but I found final fantasy 6 to be playable with some adjustments to frame skip. All that is without sound, btw.

Windows Phone 7 games less fps?

Anyone else notice this? Doodle jump and fruit ninja have less frame rate than in IOS. It may be not much of a big deal for you guys but for a mobile/console gamer like me it is.
yea I noticed that too...
I never played either of these games on iOS so I can't say, but for me the fps is fine even for PES2011. Ive played the same games on Android and don't see a noticeable fps difference.
I just hope they get rid of the random lags in games come Mango, cause that's a serious issue that deters from the overall smoothness of WP7.
Hi, I own a HTC Mozart and a 3rd gen Ipod Touch (same hardware as IPhone 3GS), and this was one of the first things I noticed when playing games on my new WP7 phone.
Simple games like Doodle Jump, Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja all run fine but at a noticeably lower framerate. If you haven't played both it doesn't really matter, but when comparing wow the iOS versions are so much smoother!
A more demanding game is "I Love Katamari". This uses simple textures but pushes alot of polygons and has alot of objects in the world - enough to make it totally unplayable on 1st and 2nd gen IPhones. Comparing the game on both systems, again iOS runs it significantly smoother, and also has a better font and transitions in the menus. The HTC is obviously rendering at a higher resolution, as there are alot less polygon "jaggys".
What worries me is the 3rd gen IPhone is now 2 years old, which is an absolutely lifetime when i comes to mobile hardware, and has an almost 50% slower CPU. Yet it still outperforms the latest WP7!
It can't be a hardware issue, so maybe its the OS - can anyone offer any insight?
please use your brain!
iphone 3g screen resolution: 480 x 320
WP 7 screen resolution: 480 × 800
clear now?

Not really.
Doodle Jump is a very simple 2D game, yet it suffers the most obvious framerate drop. Are you saying it's just not possible to produce 30FPS on a WVGA screen with the 1st generation of WP7 hardware? If so that's a pity.
Resolution hasn't got too much to do about this, I think. Best bet is that the framework used on wp7 is more high level and if you want to squeeze more fps you have to work the plumbing.
If you look at games like The Harvest, it's damn smooth even compared to a piss-poor 2D game like Doodle Jump. There are Doodle Jump clones in the market which have better framerate.
Overall, I would say it's just the platform which is new.
The fact that half xbox titles are just bad and some are totally buggy, but many others are excellent, tells you that it's feasible. Maybe people need to familiarize a bit more with the platform.
Just lazy ports.

I just love when people say what I wanted to say with 1/100 words
The current version of WP7 (NoDo) limits 30 fps in their games. Mango will up the FPS limit to 60 fps. I read somewhere that Doodle Jump will get this treatment and will be as smooth as a babies behind once mango is released..along with a number of other games I guess.
In order to stabilize, ms limit fps

a few questions for nexus s users

currently i have i8000 and i'd like to buy an android phone. my favourite is nexus s (i am also considering an atrix 4G, but it's more expensive than nexus s - about 25%, and it's much harder to find where i live).
i have a few questions for nexus s users:
-how are you satisfied with your battery life, can it last the whole day with moderate use (1-2 hours wi-fi, 1-2 hours video, half an hour- 1 hour gaming, a little bit reading, a few short calls)?
-how does it work with graphically intensive games like shadowgun, backstab, 9mm...?
-can you normally play tegra games with chainfire, how is the performance?
-can you play mpg, flv, mkv videos?
-any other comment/opinion will be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.
-how does it work with graphically intensive games like shadowgun, backstab, 9mm...?
working with nice fps.. without laggs..

It does all that, except maybe mkv playback (depends on quality).
But, if you don't have it yet, then don't buy it. I see no reason why you would get this phone in this day and age.
Most of us here have it for more than a half a year, when it was still competitive.
Now you could easily get a dual core phone for a reasonable price. Event the Galaxy S Plus would be a better choice.
Just saying... This phone is almost dead. It's towards the end of it's support period from Google, which hasn't been great so far and it's just hardware. It gets old.

well, if it does all that it's good enough for me.
for various factors (price, availability, me not wanting an amoled screen), my choice is limited to these:
-nexus s - for now, it's more likely my next phone
-optimus 2x - horrible battery life
-incredible s - seems fine, but as i read, nexus s is a little better (and cheaper)
-se xperia arc - similar to incredible s
-atrix 4g - nice, but most expensive of the bunch, and pretty hard to find
there are many video apks, free and paid, that play mkv video files.
Nexus s
Battery life is good, it last a whole day with a moderate use if u use a custom rom+kernel (my case).
Performance is very nice for a single-core smartphone, it runs gta3, asphalt 6, 9mm, nfs shift, and overs very smoothly.
In general i'm really enjoying the nexus s.

1- I am satisfied with the battery life! but I would recommend rooting the nexuss and flash a new rom where you can customize the cpu and voltge.
2/3/4-I don't have a lot of games but for playing movies and videos it work great!
I just bought mine last month and I am very satisfied specially coming from an iphone 3gs!
Root it and it turns into a baby galaxy nexus

i've had a chance to try nexus s, and i wasn't impressed.
the phone isn't rooted, runs ics, everything is on stock.
-i tried browsing the web, and it was pretty fine.
-720p .mkv video (in mx player) is too choppy to watch.
-i downloaded two free games from the market - asphalt 6 and gameloft real football 2012.
asphalt 6 lags like hell. it was a slideshow, not more than 2FPS.
real football 2012 worked significantly better, but it wasn't playable too; every few seconds it slows down, and after a second or two, it starts working normally.
would rooting/custom rom&kernel improve situation significantly?
For graphic intensive games, my nexus s ran shadowgun, backstab, gta3, and samurai2. Except for gta3, they all run without a hiccup and damn smooth. But I've had some hiccups with gta3. Also running a custom rom and custom kernel is much more better than stock in every way.
PS : For videos try "Dice player" in market. It is the best video player for nexus s and even the dev of diceplayer owns nexus s.

Asphalt 6 runs smooth as butter on my stock 2.3.6. Something is horribly wrong with the phone you used.
I also recently got a "new" nexus S and I dont see anything wrong with it. No dual core phone was near the price and in my opinion nexus S is better than the likes of incredible S, xperia arc etc.
and what do you think could be wrong with the phone i tried?
it couldn't be faulty hardware, right?
good phone
It's definitely a good phone for games. You can run games like asphalt 6, GTA 3, NFS or Counter strike portable whith high FPS (45-55). About the game 9mm, I wasn't able to play it because it was with to much lag, so much lag that was impossible to play. I'm in stock ICS. I do recomend that you buy a dual core phone if you're a gamming guy.
Today I had some stutters in Asphalt 6 so maybe it has something to do with background processes. My homescreen had certainly grown with more widgets since the last time I played it.
But I agree if you are very serious about gaming then you may wanna consider something better. What I can tell you is that if nexus S cant play something smoothly then neither would any other single core phone since we have the best GPU of all single core phones.
You could look into samsung galaxy R or the upcoming galaxy S advance. Both phones have one weird limitation with gaming, you can only use 3.5GB for storage of games so you could potentially only have 4-5 HD games before that space maxes out doesnt matter if you have 32GB card. You have to root the phone to bypass this limitation.

Don't use the market version of asphalt 6. Use the tegra 2 version instead coz I didn't get intensive lag afterwards.

I tried this and works awsome . The loading time is heavy but the game runs great.
And how is the readability of the cards? isn't it too small on a 5" screen?
I've been recently playing some Conker's Bad Fur Day on my H60-L02 using the mupen64plus core of RetroArch.
With sound disabled, and at 1280x960 resolution it's quite playable, but it really doesn't go full speed most of the time. Turns out the Honor 6 isn't fast enough yet. Maybe if someone discovers how to overclock it, it'll be a bit better.
I can still recommend it though, and I guess other games for that platform should go at real speed, because most of them weren't as demanding as the Conker.
Less demanding cores, such as Picodrive, Snes9x, Nestopia, all run at stable 60 fps, but that's not a surprise because these systems were much more simple than Nintendo 64.

Question Gaming performs well on Pixel 7 pro?

I'd like to compare it to the Galaxy S21. Would that seem reasonable? I have no issues on my device as far as gaming goes but my phone is rooted. And I debloat some of the apps. Does that alone make a difference? For games like COD Mobile I experience zero lag even at max settings. I play mainly small games like pocket city and media runs fine on Pixel 7 Pro in my experience.

I just upgraded from s21+ exynos version and it was all worth it. I only played nba 2k20 and Mobile legends, havent encountered issues so far
Gaming performance is somewhere between the SD888. I have notice that the performance at least with COD mobile has changed and seems like is dropping more frames then it used to. This I think is more related to the game then the phone since my other device with a SD888+ has been experiencing the same. Also in regards to COD the max frame rate you will achieve with ultra setting is a low resolution and only 90 fps. My SD888+ can play at medium graphics with 120 fps. this is probably because of the GPU ( I'm guessing here).
The SoC is plenty capable but games have to be optimized for Vulkan to have good performance on Mali GPUs. Every game should work fine out of the box but may lose to Adreno devices when settings are cranked.
The only thing bothers me in gaming part of p7pro is that I can't hear any game sound in Bluetooth headphones while talking over discord or normal phone call.
