yes, in dec i think they plan to release the key (if i did understand correctly)

Most of the newer transformers boot's are locked. i was wondering if anyone thinks ICS will unlock them so we can finally root the B70/B80/B90s Revisions.

The OS has nothing to do with the bootloader. ICS will not unlock the bootloader

Yes, but they can push the coding with ICS to unlock it.

nm.... There is no point to it anymore. You can't fix stupid

either way the likely ness of the code coming out before ICS is released is slim to none and just watch the prime is gonna have the same nvflash.

How to root the latest JB

Hi, sorry for noob question, but what is the easiest way to root the latest firmware? I don't want to unlock bootloader.
Downgrade to ICS? Aslo I would like to save my data (game progress etc.).
I read a lot of tuts, but I ever don't know what to do.
You can't downgrade. At this time, the only way is to unlock the bootloader and flash root in.

I have the same question, I have a stock firmware, locked (I guess), updated to the latest version.
Can I use the following guide?

Sure you can IMO
You can do it on first.
Click to my sig, goto my index for tf300 and you will find the Asus unlock tool
But is it necessary? Can I root without unlocking?
As I said, if you are on JB bootloader, you cannot root without unlock your device...for the moment

In JB i can't root if i'm not unlocked. Is that "forever" or a "just for now" thing? Because ASUS's unlock tool is giving me the error that it can't connect to the server. Should I just ditch my tf300 now?

You're definitely able to unlock and root this baby. The latest JB OTA just makes it slightly more difficult to unlock but it's still possible. If you get it and it still runs ICS, unlock and root and don't take that OTA.

The last time I checked all android based phones have a method to root and this phone is no different. If you check both android development sections you WILL see ROMs there to flash. Also if an android phone comes with an locked bootloader then there is a method to unlock it. This phone comes with a locked bootloader but there is an app for that.

If there was only like some sort of forum-like site that would give you that info....that would be pretty cool. One can dream though. :silly:
Thanks to an African-Canadian Sock Monkey, we can unlock the bootloader.
a quick look in the development thread would of answered this, but yes, it's VERY simple to root and ROM this phone (coming from HTC phones)
Very simple - did mine while sitting at work goofing around...There's more and more ROMs available every day and you can get support for ANYTHING from all the awesome people here. I'm new to modding phones and I'm so impressed
Just an added note to thank all at XDA Developers who helped my unlock and root my HTC Thunderbolt and my current Galaxy S3.
There's really little need to root and flash the S3 other than to remove VZW's bloatware and I appreciate that but XDA Developers are essential to the Thunderbolt, it required rooting and flashing to make it function properly!

good question. My guess would be no. Hopefully since there is a root method for 4.1.2 someone will try and let us know...
it made sense to me that if would lock it again since its not a hardware based unlock and SBF sets it to factory. i know they can relock a bootloader with an OTA so why not a SBF?

No, SBF will not relock the bootloader. The unlock method for all consumer HD's blows the QFuse, once it's blown it cannot be unblown.
Meaning your device cannot be re-locked. After I unlocked I SBF'd back to ICS, just to start fresh, before loading up CM 10.1. Hope this answers your question.

for one youll always have a way to root your phone. Fastbooting twrp/cwm means you can flash su even if moto blocks existing exploits. That in itself is good enough for me.
Apparently, the guy who discovered the unlock also answered this: no, it can never be relocked. Unlocking blows a QFuse on the phone that can never be unblown given the physical nature of the fuse.
I'll tell you how, maybe a week or 3 from now, AT&T and Motorola will finish bloating up there update and use some excuse such as security to re lock the bootloader.

There is no way for moto or anyone to re-lock our bootloaders once they are unlocked. The only thing that can happen now is that Moto can make an update that can prevent us from unlocking/rooting if the new phone comes with this new firmware or we take the ota without being rooted and/or unlocked. No firmware patch/upgrade can re-lock once unlocked...
A few people on the atrix forums says otherwise. It makes me think, but Motorola would be wrong to do that now that they're owned by Google.

[Q] Can I get 4.3 or similar??

Hey guys huge beginner on this type of stuff. I have one simple question though.
I know there is now a way to Root my phone, but not unlock the bootloader? So I'm wondering, is there any way for me to get a rom that is based off 4.3 at this current moment or am I out of luck?

Yes, you can root your phone. Rooting and unlocking the bootloader are two different things. If you're on the latest update, you won't be able to unlock anyway. If your BL isn't unlocked, you won't be able to use any of the 4.3 based ROMs. I don't think there have been any developed for use on SafeStrap.
If your on the new update you can't unlock your bootloader. Which means the best you'll get get is debloated stock roms.

Debloated stock just means is the Verizon builds, just with some of the extra software taken out and tweaked. It's not like cyanogen mod which had more options and tweaks. But with a locked bootloader its the best your gonna get.

However, you can use Xposed Framework to do a lot of modding/tweaking to a stock ROM. I am running a custom ROM, but I still use Xposed for a lot of things. You can theme your stock ROM in ways that are very similar to having a theme manager on AOSP ROMs.
have you verified for sure that you cannot unlock the bootloader? it doesn't hurt to try, unless you already tried.

Which is why I said if you haven't unlocked the bootloader.
Once it's unlocked, it's unlocked. You can't lock it back up because apparently, it's a physical change in the phone, such as a fuse being blown or something like that. At least, that's what I've read. http://blog.azimuthsecurity.com/2013/04/unlocking-motorola-bootloader.html
Apparently, it's something Qualcomm has created called a QFuse. These are software programmable fuses that once blown, they can NEVER be put back to their prior state. In Motorola devices, there is a FORCE_TRUSTED_BOOT QFuse. This is all explained by Dan Rosenburg who is the developer that gave us the ability to unlock our Droid RAZR HDs. it's a good read and explains a lot.
Of course, it never hurts to try and unlock it after downgrading back to the previous version.

doesn't hurt but is 100% pointless, as the system version has nothing to do with the trust zone files that cant be changed back.
the system version serves as a reference point to when it used to be possible in relation to the other files that were irrevocably updated, nothing more.

[Q] OTA 186.43.15 Let's Lay This Question To Rest...

...As I'm sure many others like me will visit this forum, read guide disclaimers, and still ask themselves "is it really true??"
If we accept the latest OTA (186.43.15) WITHOUT unlocking the bootloader, we are screwed. There is absolutely, positively, nothing that can be done (hacking, version rollback, etc.) with the phone forever. The bootloader has been locked and we're stuck with what we've got. No way to unlock it now.
So, is it really true? Please say it ain't so.
Yes, it is true, at least with the Motopocalypse method. There are other ways to bootloader unlock phones such as Sunshine, but I think that only supports newer Motorola devices.
http://theroot.ninja/
Also, you have to be rooted. If Towelroot doesn't work on the latest OTA (no idea if it does or not) then you'd have to wait for a new exploit.
Thanks for the reply.
What's most frustrating about this is that I knew it was coming, I knew the bootloader was going to be locked by the next OTA but I was too nervous to unlock the bootloader and possibly brick my wifes phone in the process. She would be pissed.
The system update notifier kept bugging her and I kept telling her to not to do it and eventually she just she went ahead with it. Ugh.

Forget another bootloader unlock exploit. That was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. As for root, well, there might be, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Of course, that's what we all said when the first KK OTA came out and look what they gave us - Towelroot AND bootloader unlock, but the bootloader unlock was a mistake - they accidentally reverted part of the code back to the original exploit code. So, that was a mistake on Moto's part.
But, this latest OTA is the last OTA for this phone. No more updates from Moto so don't expect the bootloader exploit to show up again.

That's what I was afraid of. Same thing happened on my Droid X once updated to the last build of 2.3.4
I guess the bottom line is this: I don't care that much about the final KK build as much as I care about wifi hotspot tethering. That's really what I'm after. After her phone was updated to KK from JB it killed the tethering app that we were using. So my only recourse was to flash the phone back to JB. But I just didn't have the time to mess with it, plus it's my wife's phone and I didn't want to risk bricking it.
Near as I can tell, after quite a bit of searching, I don't have any way to fix tethering with this latest build. I'll ask the question in the Q&A section.

Exactly what version of KK is she on? If she's still on 183.46.10, then that allows the bootloader to be unlocked which will then allow you to root it and then apply a tethering hack.
If, however, you are on 183.46.14 or 183.46.15, then yes, you are hosed and cannot revert back to 183.46.10 or JB.

She actually hasn't been happy with her XT926, so I think I might just buy a used phone of the same generation and mod it. If successful, we'll just swap the hacked one onto her account. I'm thinking Galaxy S3? I'd be curious to know what the "most hackable" phone of that generation is (JB or early KK)? Or should I post that question in the XDA General? I've searched and haven't found that question asked.
