Best System Tuner - HTC Sensation

What have you guys found to be your favorite app for overclocking? I'm trying to figure out which the best one is, but not sure where to begin. SetCPU? System Tuner? Daemon? Juice Defender? What have been your experiences, and what are you using now?

Hi,
I think you will find that every ROM/KERNEL Developer has their own favorite.
I'm not sure that any single one is better than the next.
Try each one for yourself, and see how it works for you.

Thanks. I realize some ROM/kernel combinations are more synergistic than others. Currently on Pyramid 3D running Bricked 0.91, using System Tuner as recommended by Show. Not sure if the other ones support dual core.
So far I've tried OC Daemon, SetCPU, Juice Defender, and System Tuner. They all work well, but I'm not sure which one has the best performance to battery ratio. I'm pretty new to this overclocking thing, so trying to establish a baseline to which I can make comparison to, using XDA as a resource. Otherwise I'd be spending a week with each app. Granted, this would probably yield better results since I'd be more aware of the pros and cons of each relative to my personal requirements, but I was hoping I could just skip the learning curve if I could, naw meen.

Hi,
Yes, I know what you mean.
In my experience, using MY phone the way I like to use it,is not the same as anyone else.
So, although I can get snippets of information from others, I will only truly find it out by myself.

Inspire Question

What I am wondering and before you attack me I did research this and couldn't find anything specific to the Inspire. I want to know generally what is a good speed to underclock the inspire to achieve maximum batter and before you say every device is different I'm asking for a general idea not a specific one. Also do you think that overclocking has a big impact on batter I am overclocking right now at 1.3 ghz do you think that I'll notice a difference. And I know I have to test it myself but I just want others opinion on it.
I have the same question.
FWIW, I run the OnDemand Governor and underclock at 883200 (245000 min) and don't notice a slowdown in any apps I run except angry birds (I ramp it up to 1.2 to play that). I haven't run any benchmarks or anything to see how it might improve the battery, since I really don't need to worry about it. It goes on the charger every night and I've never seen it below 50% when I plug it in.
I've been running a relatively stock DesireHD Gingerbread ROM based on the Asian WWE GB (2.37.707.3) but as of yesterday, I've been running one based on the telus GB released a few days ago (2.43.661.1). My kernel is custom based on stock HTC source for the 2.6.35.10 with OC/UV support added as hacked from the LeeDroid kernel tree. My source is here:

I'm running at my rom's default (1017mhz). Instead of underclocking, I use the conservative governor. Battery life is good, but I also haven't noticed a battery drain when overclocking (I've been up to 1228mhz). I didn't test/run it for an extended period of time (1 day), but I only noticed a slight bump in performance.
I've heard of people on my rom (GingerBeast), clocking down to 768mhz without noticeable slowdown. As you stated, it just depends on the rom.
I have my phone set at:
Max: 768000
Min: 230000
This works for me in literally all the situations.

Thank you its like they either yell at you to search or they give you all devices are different you have to try it. I'm not looking for a definitive answer I just wanted an idea of what has worked for them. Seriously this forum has some rude people exspecially that Scott guy hasn't helped me once just tells me to search I said I searched and he says its on google but when I bring up the page nothing. This forum would be 1000x better if people didn't have a stick up their asses everytime someone asked a question.

I hope my response wasn't considered rude, but the question really is too vague to answer. If there were some magic combination of OC/UV that worked for everyone, everyone would be using it.
They say that if you ask five New Yorkers their stance on an issue, you'll get six different opinions. Similarly, five smart phone users probably have six different opinions about the best setup for their device and none will be applicable to your situation.
Yea but I wasn't asking for the perfect combination out just wanted to know what others use to get an idea of what I should set it at but clearly you don't get that

[Q] How to overclock Desire s?

Hi,
I'm quite new to Android and forum, but within 15minutes I S-offed and rooted my phone. I still don't know how to overclock the desire s. I used "search" but I found nothing. Could anyone help me and either write me an intruction what to do step-by-step or provide me with appropriate topic? I'll be greatful!

You'll need a combination of a custom KERNEL (that supports O/C) and a custom ROM (some come with an O/C daemon built in)
time for some reading.
Ok, so one more question just in case. May I use any ROM with any kernel or I have to match ROM to kernel (or opposite)?
Generally I would say custom roms come with the most suitable kernel.
The easiest way to overclock is to simply download an app from the market that will o/c your cpu.
Peace

Although I'd also as that unless you'r e intending on playing games then the desire s should be fast enough without over clocking as ultimately that will reduce battery life.even the sense 3 rooms when configured and optimised correctly don't lag at normal operating speeds

You're still on stock ROM right?
If so, install this kernel from recovery and SetCPU once done. OC away.
If i want to overclock my desire s, does it effect my phone?

Yes, it would go a little faster
Seriously tho, it might run a little hotter, for a shorter length of time, and be slightly less stable - all depending on how much you overclock it, what settings you use, etc.
Try downloading an app from the market that will overclock your cpu and see what happens.
Sent from my HTC Desire S
And NEVER max the oc setting. Some kernels allow up to 1.7ghz but your phone would be fried in a week and be incredibly unstable. Can't recommend going past 1.2ghz if you want your phone to last til your next upgrade date. For the most part though, oc is unnecessary on this phone.

I just read somewhere in other forum, if I overclock my phone, I will have problem on my phone.
Maybe because of the cpu overheat or what?
Basically, yes.
Why not use the phone as it is, and see how you like it? If you do decide to overclock, do it in small increments. Honestly, I find it fast enough at normal speeds, playing games, browsing, etc.

+1 to you. 1Ghz already fast enough. No lagging at all like some other phone.
v(^_^)
I was quite interested in this overclocking buisness. I overcloked my phne to 1.7ghz, used it for a while and it froze twice, requiring a reboot.
There was definitely a speed incresas, but 1ghz on lbc mod is already plenty smooth!
Now I've set up setcpu profiles to have myphone only overclocked at 1.2ghz when its chargingand I'm using it. But also a profile to limit the temp at 41degrees to 825-245mhz.
But when its unplugged, u have left it on default at 1024-245mhz on demand. Great battery life compromised with great speed.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
Maybe you'll need a voltage bump at 1.7GHz. But even if it's stable, it will definitely be hotter. Not good for long term.
1.1-1.2GHz should be stable for daily use.

CPU Profiling?

What do you guys use to control the CPU speed?
I've used setCPU in the past, it seems to work. SickSense ROM does come with one, and that also seems to work well. I'm curious what you guys use. Currently I'm using KingCobra ROM and he included the DualCore MOD which is supposed to make the second core work faster and thus improve performance.
I think I'm going to install setCPU and set it on On-Demand. Not entirely sure what the best settings are for speed and also for battery life. I am more concerned about battery life while at the same time my phone can't be sluggish. Also I've noticed a lot of battery savings tools do work, but they do so by taking away things I need. For an example, the awesome battery took that comes with SickSense works wonderfully but the default supersaver setting cuts off my data and bluetooth making the phone almost useless.

See the thread in my sig around sunday night there will be an updated version (hopefully - work permitting) It will have a few new things that should help out this device. Like on the fly setting changes so it will edit the cpu when it comes online. It will work like a daemon.

[POLL] general kernel feature discussion

Hopefully this will help new users know what to try first and perhaps kernel devs to get less requests in their threads. Feel free to make a list of your top 5 mods/features or whatever and comment on specific mods/features.
for example, have you noticed zRam to make a perceivable difference?
note that I am leaving overclock out of the poll since it is kind of a given in any custom kernel.
My apologies if I forgot your favourite feature!
Still not sure what the point of this thread is.
Anyway, I don't overclock with custom kernels because it makes scrolling not smooth. I would rather my phone be smooth than have some pointless number in my CPU app. Zomg 2.000000gHz!!1!11111111!!!!!!!!!
With zRAM enabled I can leave 10 tabs open, and come back to them in a month and they're all still loaded.

Ironic that the point of the thread is in the op, and then you contributed to it by the second half of the reply. So is this a pointless thread, or did you have something to contribute? Make up your mind. Let's try to keep this thread tidy.

I dunno, I guess I envision noobies reading the first post of whatever kernel they which to flash, which lists the various features of the kernel and what each option does. Having said that, that makes this thread redundant in my eyes. But hey, if that's what you want then I'm all for it! (hence the contribution)

Fair enough. But not all features work as intended. Reading a feature list doesn't expose which things actually make the biggest difference.
For example, in my experience zRam helps multitasking, but often my phone grinds down to a slow pace with it. We might have noobs posting in Rom threads about how much lag the Rom has without realizing it's maybe the zRam they enabled just because it seems like a cool feature. Now there is more junk in the wrong threads.
Sure, they can read up on it elsewhere, but I thought it would be helpful to try and get one x specific info amalgamated into one place.
Also, with a new batch of kernels probably coming up soon with JB leaks maybe this will help kernel devs prioritize their development without a hundred people asking for stuff all the time.

What else do I like... I like the idea of OTG support although I have yet to use it. I also like the fps fix included with ElementalX for HDMI video.

Zram shouldn't grind to a halt on this phone, maybe on older phones. Lowmemorykiller is still in effect and it's not writing to disk so it doesn't "thrash" like conventional swap. It's all written to fast ram and the performance penalty for compressing and decompressing is negligible with a fast dual core. I use it all the time.

Well, If I can take anybody's word for it, its yours lol. It must have been something else then.
The only other thing I changed was starting to use chrome, and when I was multitasking between chrome and anything else it was super slow...even to reopen the keyboard.
This is the kind of discussion i'd like to foster in this thread. (even if it means being wrong)

You're not necessarily wrong, I'm sure it could happen in certain situations. I find chrome to be very heavy on phones (complete opposite of chrome on the desktop). It may have kicked everything out of memory. That usually doesn't happen because most phone apps are fairly light.

Alright so I dont have a list but I am going to say that when I enable sweep2wake, I notice some lag all the way around the phone. Overclocking to 1728 has always been perfect for me. Can someone also look into otg on jellybean? I've been having alot of trouble getting that to work.

I think otg is supported in the jb sense stock kernel. (NB If you go to storage, at the very bottom there is a bar for usb storage.)
However, I haven't tried it for myself yet. Reading around I saw that the first time you may need to leave it plugged in for a while for it to register. some users reported leaving the phone with otg plugged and coming back later and it had shown up.
I wish I could remember which rom thread that was...but that's basically all that was mentioned.
Edit: Also, I don't know if the stock jb kernel will self power the otg device. You may need the special cable, if you weren't already.

Your best bet is to read and try different kernels out if you really want to know. Normally the kernel recommended by the ROM Dev is your best bet as that's the one they test on and design the ROM around.
The other thing to do is to delete Antutu from your phone and never use it again. Benchmarks DO NOT reflect real-world usage. The best way to see which kernel is fastest is to try them out the way that you use your phone. You are a much better judge of whether a particular ROM/Kernel combination is smooth or not than any benchmark software - I doubt very much that you felt a 20%+ difference in speed between Ice DS and Viper.

Whether it is about battery, lag, or some other bug, i will just test it out for my self and it always isn't as how some ppl describe.

There was a similar question asked recently, to which Jack_R1 replied. I'll try to dig his post out in a minute, but the basic gist is not to enable Swap - it doesn't do anything other than ruin the life of your device.
Just checked - it was this thread by you. The answer Jack gave you is the ONLY answer you need mate. If you really want to enable Swap then you will probably have to create your own kernel with swap enabled in it as I'm not aware of any that list it as a function.
As Jack said;-
TL;DR - DON'T EVER USE SWAP.
