Best kernel - HTC Desire S

I dont know much about kernel and i want a better performance for my phone...
What is the best kernel to use?i mean good performance and stability....i try the original kernel but according to Antutu my performance is under 3500 points for Viper Saga ...Before i use Ice Ds and my performance was over 4600 point...So,plecase an onest opinion about what kernel shall i use for Viper saga...

Your best bet is to read and try different kernels out if you really want to know. Normally the kernel recommended by the ROM Dev is your best bet as that's the one they test on and design the ROM around.
The other thing to do is to delete Antutu from your phone and never use it again. Benchmarks DO NOT reflect real-world usage. The best way to see which kernel is fastest is to try them out the way that you use your phone. You are a much better judge of whether a particular ROM/Kernel combination is smooth or not than any benchmark software - I doubt very much that you felt a 20%+ difference in speed between Ice DS and Viper.

What I mean is that ... the Antutu benchmark shows Viper as being 20% faster than Ice DS, but I bet it didn't feel like that when you used it. Benchmarks are meaningless in real life situations.

So true, that's why i dun use other ppl's option as a reason whether or not to try a new rom.
Whether it is about battery, lag, or some other bug, i will just test it out for my self and it always isn't as how some ppl describe.

Thanks all of you for informations ...now I can say that it doesn't matter what Antutu says ,it matter how my phone is acting with that kernel...I have one more question about kernel, how shall I turn on swap?
I have the message that I don't have a compatible swap kernel....or how to make a swap kernel....

There was a similar question asked recently, to which Jack_R1 replied. I'll try to dig his post out in a minute, but the basic gist is not to enable Swap - it doesn't do anything other than ruin the life of your device.
Just checked - it was this thread by you. The answer Jack gave you is the ONLY answer you need mate. If you really want to enable Swap then you will probably have to create your own kernel with swap enabled in it as I'm not aware of any that list it as a function.
As Jack said;-
TL;DR - DON'T EVER USE SWAP.

Inspire Question

What I am wondering and before you attack me I did research this and couldn't find anything specific to the Inspire. I want to know generally what is a good speed to underclock the inspire to achieve maximum batter and before you say every device is different I'm asking for a general idea not a specific one. Also do you think that overclocking has a big impact on batter I am overclocking right now at 1.3 ghz do you think that I'll notice a difference. And I know I have to test it myself but I just want others opinion on it.
I have the same question.
FWIW, I run the OnDemand Governor and underclock at 883200 (245000 min) and don't notice a slowdown in any apps I run except angry birds (I ramp it up to 1.2 to play that). I haven't run any benchmarks or anything to see how it might improve the battery, since I really don't need to worry about it. It goes on the charger every night and I've never seen it below 50% when I plug it in.
I've been running a relatively stock DesireHD Gingerbread ROM based on the Asian WWE GB (2.37.707.3) but as of yesterday, I've been running one based on the telus GB released a few days ago (2.43.661.1). My kernel is custom based on stock HTC source for the 2.6.35.10 with OC/UV support added as hacked from the LeeDroid kernel tree. My source is here:

I'm running at my rom's default (1017mhz). Instead of underclocking, I use the conservative governor. Battery life is good, but I also haven't noticed a battery drain when overclocking (I've been up to 1228mhz). I didn't test/run it for an extended period of time (1 day), but I only noticed a slight bump in performance.
I've heard of people on my rom (GingerBeast), clocking down to 768mhz without noticeable slowdown. As you stated, it just depends on the rom.
I have my phone set at:
Max: 768000
Min: 230000
This works for me in literally all the situations.

I hope my response wasn't considered rude, but the question really is too vague to answer. If there were some magic combination of OC/UV that worked for everyone, everyone would be using it.
They say that if you ask five New Yorkers their stance on an issue, you'll get six different opinions. Similarly, five smart phone users probably have six different opinions about the best setup for their device and none will be applicable to your situation.
Yea but I wasn't asking for the perfect combination out just wanted to know what others use to get an idea of what I should set it at but clearly you don't get that

Overclocking - pros & cons?

Yes, I FINALLY did it!!! I overclocked my G2X. I would appreciate if anyone could share their experiences with o.c. pros and cons... Should I retreat or stay where I am? Please some feed back!
Over 1300 seems to cause trouble on mine.
i dont think oc'ing is really that necessary with a phone this fast but if u must i wouldn't go above 1.3 (just seems unstable above that). I think the "Pros" come from being able to underclock. Setting up profiles for uc'ing when screen is off or as battery level drops etc really prolongs the life of the battery (at least in my case)
On my OG droid that came limited at 550 mhz, ya, oc'ing was def necessary but I cant really think of any "Pros" for oc'ing this phone.
each phone is different though so play around and you'll find a combination that works great for your phone, good luck
Well... you can get some serious bench scores... This thing rocks the Mandelbrot multithread test in smartbench 2011 at 1.5 ghz. Other than that it helps with games.

What about the CPU not having enough cooling and frying the CPU over time. I presume its just like Desktop overclocking but without all the extra cooling you can add to make it safe for the hardware.

But what i really want to know is if oc could damage the phone. After all if there is that danger it's noy worth it...
In all honesty I used to be really into benchmark scores and OCing the heck out of my phone and under volting it in the process but that led to many battery pulls ect. What I've noticed is just keep it at stock and mild uving seems to be the best for me its stable decently fast just 2 cents though
Overclocking a cpu is the same as on a pc, only a bit more dangerous on a phone. (This phone already has overheating problems running at stock speeds ) On a computer, people pay a premium for parts that are easily overclocked, and have either very good fans/heatsinks or a liquid cooling rig.
Overclocking is dangerous, especially because not all chips are going to be made equal, even if they come off the same production line. These chips are designed to run at a certain voltage, and certain clock speed. As far as real world use, (NOT benchmarks. Sure, they look pretty and all, but benchmarks are never very accurate.)
Sure, you might get 2-3 more fps on your games, but is that worth the risk of shortening the life of your chip/phone?
(And just so you know, I've been building/overclocking pc's for years, but I also understand what you need to do to keep it stable, and it's *all about cooling*.)
If you're not convinced, try this. Don't overclock your phone, and use it for a few days. Tell me honestly that you really notice a real-usable difference with the chip overclocked or not. (Games set aside, but like I said, getting a couple extra fps on a game to me isn't worth the risk without a proper cooling setup)
For those of you that really don't understand what you're doing to your chips when you overclock, I'd suggest doing some reading about it. A good place to start would be here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overclocking
So you think using fauxs kernel is not safe or reduces the life of the chip? I just flashed it and didnt oc or uv further then fauxs default settings...

I'm not saying it's for sure, I'm saying there's a chance.
Plus keep in mind that these kernels have other really nice additions besides overclocking and undervolting. I'm using faux's stock voltage kernel ext4, and leaving it at stock settings, and it really works great.
I just posted this up because I see a lot of people more interested in quadrant scores (which to me are pretty useless) than stability of their phones. If you do overclock, and it works for you, more power to you. I just want to inform people. I'd HIGHLY suggest if you aren't sure, read that wiki article, it's a great place to start. (not all information is there, but it gives a very good general idea on how and what overclocking is.)
Thanks! i always like reading knowledgeable and informative posts!

OK, you definitely convinced me.... I have also faux (let me tell you exactly - Kernel Version 2.6.32.9 FR Faux 123-v0.03) on EagleBlood 1.05. Could you please tell me what I need to do set up in order to be safe? Thanks!
I'd just go to faux's thread in the development section (his froyo thread, not the cm7 one, since you're using eagleblood), and download his stock voltage kernel. (It's in the first post.) He's on .04 now, by the way.
Then reboot into recovery, and flash the file you downloaded. It'll overwrite your current kernel and modules with the new one, then reboot.

And a lot of times the kernel will be credited to the developer. So if you see "faux's kernel" people are referring to kernels by faux123. Trinity kernels were developed by morfic. If you are having a hard time finding a specific one, look at the top left to see who started the thread and sometimes that will help find it. Does that make sense? You'll need a combination of a custom KERNEL (that supports O/C) and a custom ROM (some come with an O/C daemon built in)
time for some reading.
Ok, so one more question just in case. May I use any ROM with any kernel or I have to match ROM to kernel (or opposite)?
Generally I would say custom roms come with the most suitable kernel.
The easiest way to overclock is to simply download an app from the market that will o/c your cpu.
Peace

Although I'd also as that unless you'r e intending on playing games then the desire s should be fast enough without over clocking as ultimately that will reduce battery life.even the sense 3 rooms when configured and optimised correctly don't lag at normal operating speeds

You're still on stock ROM right?
If so, install this kernel from recovery and SetCPU once done. OC away.

Yes, it would go a little faster
Seriously tho, it might run a little hotter, for a shorter length of time, and be slightly less stable - all depending on how much you overclock it, what settings you use, etc.
Try downloading an app from the market that will overclock your cpu and see what happens.

And NEVER max the oc setting. Some kernels allow up to 1.7ghz but your phone would be fried in a week and be incredibly unstable. Can't recommend going past 1.2ghz if you want your phone to last til your next upgrade date. For the most part though, oc is unnecessary on this phone.

I just read somewhere in other forum, if I overclock my phone, I will have problem on my phone.
Maybe because of the cpu overheat or what?
Basically, yes.
Why not use the phone as it is, and see how you like it? If you do decide to overclock, do it in small increments. Honestly, I find it fast enough at normal speeds, playing games, browsing, etc.

+1 to you. 1Ghz already fast enough. No lagging at all like some other phone.
v(^_^)
I was quite interested in this overclocking buisness. I overcloked my phne to 1.7ghz, used it for a while and it froze twice, requiring a reboot.
There was definitely a speed incresas, but 1ghz on lbc mod is already plenty smooth!
Now I've set up setcpu profiles to have myphone only overclocked at 1.2ghz when its chargingand I'm using it. But also a profile to limit the temp at 41degrees to 825-245mhz.
But when its unplugged, u have left it on default at 1024-245mhz on demand. Great battery life compromised with great speed.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA Premium App
Maybe you'll need a voltage bump at 1.7GHz. But even if it's stable, it will definitely be hotter. Not good for long term.
1.1-1.2GHz should be stable for daily use.

Battery/Kernel Dilema Advice/assitance

Well the thing is I don't know wich kernel to pair up with Hellfire Phoenix 2.1 so far it's what I have liked the most.
The stock kernel gives funky battery readings, I tried trinity ELP kernel but my phone doesn't last much as I'd like it to maybe I'm asking for too much from my g2x.
So what I would like to know is what kernel should I try for the best battery lifespan I am normally using 4g with pandora but while giving it this use and texting from time to time /checking facebook it doesn't last me through half a day I start using the phone from around 6-6:30 Am and by 1 pm my phone is at 20%. I give it breaks of around 1-3 hours in wich I disable data/ I also keep sync and wifi disabled.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated and +Thanks will be given to those that are helpful
PS.I have yet to try Eaglesblood 2.3.7 is it worth compared to hellfire ?
Using data on the phone like Pandora and Facebook for one hour will drop my battery about 15-20% on 4g so, 5 hours worth is about normal in my opinion if you plan on doing that all the time I suggest extra batteries or extended. You're simply asking too much IMO!

Thought so "( Either way With what Kernel could I get the best out of hellfire phoenix 2.1? Also I'm confused on some things like with the trinity ELP kernel it says it's 1.1ghz/UC does that mean it is undervolted while being overclocked by 100mhz (just making sure) also in CM settings I have the option of setting the cpu speed.. now if I set it lets sayy 750mhz is it also undervolting it?
I'm sure I don't need 1ghz for the use I give it most of the time I could just change it back when I
m in the mood for gaming or does this scale depending on the task?
Sorry for so many questions I'm still new to this and I want to be sure of everything

I'd say either the kernel you have now or Faux UV version... look up the thread that shows "how to undervolt" (or something close) and go that route if you truly want to get the best battery life (I don't undervolt as I get the battery I need for my daily activities.)

So Faux123 Kernels are the ones people use the most for what I've seen.
I'm not sure wich faux kernel I have It says 2.6.32.56 CM7 Faux123-049, I checked the thread and latest is 0.48 soo I'm a bit lost there
I've also seen some people say they prefer the trinity kernel because it was released later.
I've tried both the stock Faux that comes with hellfire and the trinity I do not see any difference whatsoever in battery life or stability ( trinity does score significantly higher on benchmarks)
I could careless about benchmarks haven't ran one since I got this phone and oc'ed it to 1.5 to see what would happen... other wise they are just options some of our phones can't handle certain kernels... play with them and see which you like more. My only advice is faux cm version lol ds causes the funky readings.

faux 049b5 is for ICS roms, 048 is for GB roms. Don't mix them up or rom won't boot.
Doing anything on 4g will drain your battery much faster. If you can switch to 2g/3g networks while not using data, it can save a lot of battery power. Try Juicedefender ultimate also. It helps in toggling/switching options for you.
Every phone is different plus everyonez preferences/usage are unique. Best bet is to try both for a week or so and then decide for yourself.

If you answer I don't have time to read and such, then you shouldn't even have time to root the device. Laziness is pretty frowned upon on XDA. The more you read the more you would find out that everyone has different experiences with kernels. Try them out and figure it out on your own... if you have thread already about a kernel or a specific rom to choose stick to that thread and don't make a new one, as it just causes clutter for people that do use the search function, as when they search for something like "which kernel" they get

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586616&highlight=which+kernel
even more particular in the Hellfire 2.1 thread search "which kernel" and get this

not so hard!

ELP voltages are probably too low for you, thus actually causing higher drain. Try the T15 and under volt until you find your sweet spot

I will give this a shot and let you now what I find. Thanks!
So far I can't seem to resize my widgets in ADW launcher EX.
This kernal seems very fast and smooth so far. Good work!

It won't boot for me and if its not too much can you make a version that has 1512 and badass governor?
I'm just asking like you said I should thanks for your work so far

Ouch, your Sensation can't handle 1.728GHz. I'll make a 1.512GHz on boot version (assuming my laptop won't act stupid, it shouldn't take that long) but I'm a little reluctant to add Badass because its primary goal is to save battery, and when I used it my phone went really slow. If enough people agree with you, however, then I'll add it.
UPDATE: 1.512GHz version added in the Download section! Enjoy!
Hthere, can somebody advice if this kernel can be used in SENSE ROM ? Thanks.

This is not for Sense because there are no Sense ROMS based off of Jelly Bean. Even then, this kernel was not designed for Sense ROMS (nor was it designed for Ice Cream Sandwich) and I have not tested it on a Sense ROM. You can still try it on a Sense ROM and see if the Wi-Fi works as I am pretty confident it'll at least boot up.

I've totally agree, badass govenor only for good battery life but not enough good for performance. I never badass govenor to choose for using some kernel. For me ondemamd govenor is the best, give me a balance between battery life and performance. Try downloading, flashing it and report later. Thanks for hardwork.

OK, I've tested in the SENSE ROM, and it WORKS well so far including the WIFI. Thanks and will see if any advantage of this kernel compared with the others.
PS. just found out that the USB connect to PC won't work. I feel this kernel is very smooth and it will be highly appreciated if you can make some modification to make USB work ? Thanks.
I second the installation of badass. I love performance but with that comes battery drain and I use my phone a lot while I'm away from chargers. It would be nice to have a choice to save battery when I know I won't be able to get to a charger for a while.
Thanks for your work.

That could be ROM related. If it isn't ROM related then it's probably due to fact that my kernel isn't designed for Sense. Try installing a different kernel like Bricked to see if USB works. If it works with Bricked and it doesn't work with my kernel then sorry, I can't do anything about it.

Once/if the number of users increases, I'll start a poll asking whether or not badass should be added (maybe a few days to a week from now). Thanks for your feedback

That sounds fair enough.
Just installed and tested the 1.7 and it seems super quick. Everything seems to be working well. Good job!

Though I do like badass governor, if the kernel is meant primarily for performance, I for one would like to see OnDemand included. It's always worked well in performance terms for me. Thanks for sharing buddy :good:
Performance governor is just that wide open quick response only if willing to have serious battery drain!
From my personal exp.
Badass, smartass, ondemand, brazilianwax,Lionheart,Wheatley etc. These govorners have a broader range for specific needs!
1152-6 is best overclock and is considered the kernel sweet spot
Anything more beyond this level is more cumbersome and can and will cause freezing in selected devices!
Here is my old kernel got for dev with 20 or so governors he can use if he chooses
