Dodgy proximity sensor? - HTC Desire S

Hey guys
Apologies if this is supposed to be in general but I figured it would make more sense here.
Basically my brother's phone just got the sense 3.0 update the other day and now whenever he tries to end the call the phone 'switches off. ' I figured it might be something to do with the proximity sensor. So I got the app proximity sensor finder and covered the proximity sensor. When I took my finger off it said that I was still covering it.
Could it be something to do with the update? The phone is not rooted or S-OFF'ed and I don't really want to do it unless I have to. It just seems a little tedious installing a custom rom and then having to make it s-on again if I have to send it back.

[Q] Capacitive button / Proximity sensor Issue

Hello anyone
1st thread posted ever...utter noob needs help.
I have managed to root my Sensation and can now easily load custom ROMs.
But one thing I have noticed since I rooted my phone is that the screen will not turn black when I answer call and put the phone to my face. I think this is also connected to the fact the buttoms dont light up if I cover the sensor.
I have searched everywhere I can and cant find anything useful. I dont think it is a problem with the hardware as it was working before.
Hey Mr. Price, thanks for the text. what rom are u using?
well if it was working when it was stocked, have u tried to flash stock RUU
Hey man, cheers for all your help so far. Just found something odd. The home buttons do light up but only when I change the brightness of the screen (i changed it via power widget) they stay on until I press the power button, then back to square 1. Still no joy on the proximity sensor though. Do you have link on how to put everything back so I can start from scratch? Think I was on a different hboot but don't know if that makes any difference.

[Q] Does the mytouch 4g slide have a proximity sensor?

The mytouch 4g slide is my wife's first android phone. It has been kind of a pain for her to get use to, especially because seems to hang up on people a lot by accidently hitting the end call button. My G2 has this feature so I never have to worry about it. Should the screen be going off when she has the phone next to her ear? I would also like to know if there is a setting somewhere I can adjust for her.
This REALLY bugs her!
Thanks
Yes it does and the screen SHOULD turn off when it gets close to her face during a call. Once it does that it will not respond to any cheek presses. If she's holding it far away from her face and tapping her cheek to it I can see why it would hang up, and the solution would be to have her try to hold the phone differently. I knew so many people that would "cheek mute" me or "cheek hang up" on me when they got the iPhone 4, but this phone hasn't caused me any problems. Maybe you can exchange it with T-Mobile for a new one if you feel it is defective.
Does it have a screen protector on? For some reason, my proximity sensor wasn't working properly when I had the plastic screen cover that the myTouch came with on.

Why don't you try asking your sister in law?
She only talks to people when she wants to talk, she works at a call center so she has to talk with people every day. Thanks for the answers

[Q] Proximity sensor not working

Let me explain my issue.
My proximity sensor stopped working (it would work occasionly) when running HyperNonSense ICS. I tried installing the DHD proximity sensor app, but that doesn't support the kernel. I have recently flashed virtious inqusition, and the sensor now will not work at all. I have tried the DHD app again, with the same issue, and I have tried pointing a camera at it whist calling voicemail, however there was no responce. I have also tried a proximity sensor app (http://goo.gl/TlTa8 and http://goo.gl/9gf4V) however both show no reading.
I guess I am going to have to send it in (I don't want to be without it!!!) Unless anyone has any suggestions.
EDIT: Sorry mod - didn't realise I was posting in general!
Bump

Proximity / light sensor also recently stopped working and the and I'm currently stock with s-on. I am probably just gonna send it in for repair.

Ok, restored back to stock (1.50) with ruu and the problem is still there.

According to the user manual, the proximity sensor is in the top left corner, under the glass of the screen, do you have a full size screen protector on, it could be blocking it.

I always thought that the proximity sensor and the light sensor were in the same area, but regardless both of mine seems to be messed up. The led lights at the bottom of my phone don't even come on anymore. :-\

Same problem here.Any solutions so far?
If sending it back for a repair will fix it,that means there is actually a way to fix it,so why no one knows how to do it?
It`s a HTC secret or something?!
Mine just died today fully. Phone would turn on over the last couple of days then when it goes into stand by the screen would freeze. A pull of the battery and reboot would not get it to come back on. I then treid a couple of adb reboot commands and it got it back again.
Then today it just died. Not getting battery light or anything. All it will do is power on and vibrate then nothing. As I am custom rom I cant send it back or they will charge a fortune, so just bit the bullet and ordered a new one arriving on Saturday
Let me just clarify - I have no screen protector on - Just this case http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005B3OEV2/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details - I have sent the phone in to carphone and will report when I get it back

When you plug it in to your PC, is it coming up with QLOAD USB or something like that?
Also, try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198585 (AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!)

@brilldoctor: I have been struggling with this for WEEKS! It is NOT a hardware problem. It's an upgrade to ICS and get stuck with this **** problem! I tried other threads and nothing successful. My capacitive backlights for the touchpad under the LCD's dont work either WITHIN a ROM. In recovery they work fine. Another run-around was to Fix Permissions in Recovery also and then boot into the ROM and sometimes they all worked, sometimes they didn't. Another one was to SuperWipe and start from scratch down to the Radio flashing level.....same ****, lights, sensors don't work.
I'm still going crazy trying to figure it out as it is NOT a hardware problem!!!!!!
Hi guys! I'm having the same problem here, my proximity sensor is not working at all, I'm on Virtuous inquisition 4.0.2 and tried different kernels but nothing! I just wanna know if it is a hardware problem or something else??
Do you guys found a solution or an explanation to the problem? Or still using your sensation without the proximity sensor?
Sent from my Sensation using xda premium
Same thing with prox sensor here
Weird thing is that, when I take the flashlight and point it to the prox sensor (with light) andro sensor Anrdoid Sensor Box reports that proximity sensor is working (0.0 cm -> 3,5 cm).
That would definitely mean that it's a software, not a hardware problem.
Maybe some kind of calibration for proximity sensor would fix it, but I can't find one (there are for rezound and zte, but no for sensation (pyramid)).
How can I just disable it?

Its the update that brought these problems. I've helped many with this same problem.
When you boot your phone, cover the sensor with your thumb. That is all.

got same problem with elegancia .... no proximity and light sensor... sad , i tryed to serch every post in google... without luck.
Some1 got some ideas , exept send to warranty. So long i cant go without phone.
and wagedroid cover dont help :S huh , so unhappy :S
I have the same problem as all of you guys. I tried everything I found as a possible solution on the web, but none of them worked for me. The funny thing is, that they work sometimes, and sometimes don't work. But what I found out, is that they are not working when the battery charge is 30%-100%, and when gets less than 30%, they start working perfectly. I tested it for about a week, and it was the same everytime the charge was getting less that 30%. So may be some of the developers might know where this problem could be coming from, since on a low charge the sensors work just fine.
If it matters, I am using my stock battery, but it is the same with my other battery.
My current ROM is ViperS 1.6.3, Sense 4.1 from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671547&highlight=vipers

is there a sensor fix yet?

sorry to make another thread on this but anyway, lets get to the point
my sensation (and others, as well) has problems with the proximity and light sensors.
sometimes the proximity sensor works, but after a while it stops reading it. this is most likely not a hardware issue. with the ambient light sensor i have no idea whether it works or not but im assuming this is also a software related.
any fixes yet or is this a problem with all sense4.0/ICS ROMs? its really irritating when i have to change brightness all the time or when my face hangs up or mutes a call haha
i heard some people tried fixes, tried reverting to sense 3.6 or even GB ROMs but the problem persisted.. i hope its not completely and permanently damaged, i just bought this phone

i turned off fastboot, shut down my phone, then turned it on face-down in a dark room and both proxi and light are working again..
the thing is, others have tried this and it ends up failing eventually. i really hope this is just a software/kernel issue and will be resolved with updates.. if its a hardware issue, i think im gonna have to step away from HTC after all these years..

i did a "superwipe" using the file from the ARHD thread
then i installed the base from the same thread
Then i installed ARHD and both sensors are working
then i did a superwipe again and installed the PKMN ROM and both sensors are still working after several reboots... hmmmmm...
im gonna try ordroid again, hopefully they dont mess up
im really really really really glad this is not a hardware issue

yea it didnt work.. it stopped working by the end of the day. i think the t-mobile firmware is from a different country
so this time i did the same thing but i used the latest T-mobile US firmware that came out a week or two ago (since my phone is t-mobile from US)
process:
- superwipe
- install firmware
- install ordroid
things have been good for the past few days. im getting worse service with the radio but im gonna change it and see if it affects it
i guess these phones are very small hardware variations that different firmware addresses differently. its been working for days now so i think its fixed for good

To be honest, SuperWipe is not the best way to clean up the phone.
I'd recommend the "Format all partitions except SD Card" option in 4ext.
Also, this is unnecessary if you are switching between ROMs having the same Android version & Sense version. In that case, just back up as you usually would before switching a ROM (NANDROID+ Apps + Messages + Contacts), wipe cache & dalvik, then proceed to install the ROM.
Should you face any problems, format all partitions except SD Card & re-install.
Hope this helps.

oh man i hope not
the proxi and light sensors are pissing me off, they dont last. sometimes as long as you dont turn your phone off or restart, theyll last forever but its so annoying
i think my gyro and acc are working.. not sure how accurate they are but they are taking measurements so i guess thats good enough
My phone was stuffed, no sensors (acc,gyro,g-senor,prox,light,magnetic etc etc), then the next thing was the earpiece got all tinny sounding (on both stock and custom roms). HTC Australia did a straight handset swap, 4 business day turn around. hopefully I wont get the same prob again
Fastboost on or off????
After experiencing the same problem most of you have: light sensor and proximity are not working, I checked some posts. Espescially when in direct sunlight my Auto Brightness wasn't working and when hanging up a phone call my screen stayed black.
All posts had to do with Super Wipe, change kernels, flash ROM's etc etc
Then I saw that somone said: turn Fastboost off.
But my Fastboost was already off. So...I turned it on....reboot and......it works again!!!!
Hope it stays this way. Everybody....good luck!!
BTW: Sensation is Super CID, 4.0.3 Sense 3.6, software version 3.33.401.6
So...
Got the same problem here...
All of my sensors "died" and the backlight on the buttons as well...
I've tried everything said over here...
I realy do hope its a software issue and getting fixed fast
accelerometer, gyroscope not working
First of all, sorry to pull back a really old thread but I thought this thread had the most relevant discussion.
My Sensation's accelerometer and gyroscope sensors are not working. They stopped working the first time I tried unlocking the bootloader of my phone and installing a custom ROM. That was almost a year back and I have been trying to live with the phone like that. Since then, I have also installed multiple different ROMs. Currently, I am on Cyanogenmod 10 nightly. Its a good ROM and everything works except the Gyroscope and accelerometer sensors but I need to get these sensors working again. I have tried different kenels, firmwares, ROMs, etc etc.
Any suggestions?

Can you share some reliable site for the RUUs? I found some, but am not sure about the authenticity of the ROMs given that the MD5 cheksum is missing at the download locations.

[Q] Nexus 4 sensor problem and warranty

Hi i have unrooted Nexus 4 with paranoid android and recently i experienced some problems with sensor responsible for blacking screen when calling someone so i have a few questions. Firstly can i send them unrooted device or it cancel warranty totally no matter what kind of problem it is? Secondly, if no, is there maybe possibility to lock it again so its looks like fabric one etc? Or maybe some know if it maight not be a problem with sensor itself but something else, i already change rom from to cyanogenmod to see if it would help but it didn't.

First, no you have to unroot in order to send back for warranty(every root guide here will warn you of this)
Second, yes you can relock bootloader and unroot so it appears untouched to the manufacturers.
Third, it might be a battery issue on your part, if your warranty is still valid, you might want to unroot, relock bootloader and send back.
