I have been looking very closely at the VS gTablet for school. However, I am concerned about functionality versus a tablet PC (laptop convertible). Can anyone shed some light in both areas (experiences); because I am stuck deciding between a Lenovo 201 and the VS gTab. Also, is it possible to use a mouse and keyboard or a stylus (for note taking / drawing) on the gTab? Thanks!
I'm really looking for something to be able to take written notes with, record lectures, access internet for downloading notes and other materials.
Based on some of the research I have done; I have the following pro's and con's to decide from:
Lenovo 201:
Pro's: Comes with a digitizer pen, has more storage space, easily convertible, and works right out of the box.
Con's: Battery life, weight, and price.
VS gTab:
Pro's: Android OS, light, decent battery life, very portable, and price.
Con's: No digitizer pen, space not as upgradeable (correct me if I'm wrong), and needs to be modded to get full functionality.
Feel free to include anything I may have missed. Thanks in advance!
Go with the Lenovo, if you really want it for Pure school, and some basic functionallity
Well, the Lenovo may be out of the question after their sale ends tonight. It's too bad, get a $2800 tablet pc for $1600. I haven't received my student funds yet. If Lenovo doesn't have a sale like this later, I think the VSgTab will be the way to go.

+1 it will fit in your budget
http://www.androidostablet.com/android-tablet/android-tablet-alu.html
has anyone tried these... seem good to me, i dont own one though.
It may, but it is also more expensive than the VS G Tab or the Archos 101. When I buy electronics, I tend to lean towards the powerhouses versus the mid to low end stuff. Not saying the galaxay isn't one of those; but the CPU that the GTab and Archos 101 offer are really nice!
But, at this point, it is a decision between the VS GTab and the Archos 101. I did find a capacitive stylus made by Pogo Sketch (broader head pen type) and DAGi (finer pen type) that should work for taking notes with. The biggest problem I face atm is the lack of stores in my area that have active demo models.
So i want to buy a android tablet. i will so be going to college, and i find it was easier to carry tablet with ebooks instead of the actual book.
I have AT&T. so their tablet will be the Galaxy Tab, which is okay for 549.99
but then the Motorola Xoom (wifi version) came out for 599.99 which i find way better only problem would be the 3G. i hate verizon btw.
and of course there are many other to come in the next months.
so can you all guide me in which direction will be the best for me. thanks

If only you'd read the rest of it and realise it is now a combined general thread.
I would imagine you would be needing something with exceptional battery life and an excellent screen (particularly for viewing in sunlight). Something like the pixel qi technology, the Notion Ink Adam for example, however whether the Notion Ink delivers on what it promises remains to be seen, its been in development for a long time.
If you are spending that sort of money I would highly recommend getting a demo of the devices and I would also consider setting the iPad2 as a benchmark, if you are paying around the same price, then you should at least aim for a screen/battery better than that, or you might as well get one of those.
i not really in iOS, i have an ipod touch. its blah.
i liek android better.
there to many out there to go for.
i have my eyes set on some of them, HTC Flyer, Moto Xoom (AT&T verison might launch is that is so, we got a winner but until then), toshiba tablet, Viewsonic Viewpad 7 or 10. those are mainly the once i am intrested in. just dont know which will be best. and more hackable (if thats even a word.)

As far as I can tell they are all quite similar spec, although not looked in detail.
Regarding hack-ability, keep an eye out for which ones are rooted etc, with the hardware specs being so good and being from main stream manufacturers chances are they will be hacked (I imagine just too tempting).
I would expect that the Viewsonic's battery and screen won't be a patch on the others, as a lesser manufacturer, but then neither will the price.
For me, I've decided to go the cheep route, since I don't have the cash to get the more expensive ones or to upgrade them when they get superseded in 12 - 18 months.
I think after all the atrix with the lapdock will be my final choice

I have a notion ink Adam - pixel qi, 3g.
It's a great piece of hardware. Fast, good camera, light, the pixel qi works well.
The down sides are:
- the Eden UI still has a few bugs. I'm looking to run Ubuntu anyway so not an issue for me
- pixel qi is not the same as a kindle. Similar, but pixel qi is more for usage in the sun.
I was wondering did anyone find any good stylus that is compatible with the hp touchpad. This was my main reason why I got the touchpad so I can use it for note taking and sketching. I want to get a really good one for the touchpad or for any future tablets i might get in the future.
This is what I´m searching for, too. I think the Wacom Bamboo Stylus is the best you can get for capazative displays at the moment...but it´s a bit too expensive for my taste. Any other suggestions?
Sorry, I don't have much to recommend. I've wondered how a stylus would work on the Touchpad. I'm coming from the Nook Color, and from what I understand, no stylus really works well with it. I personally have some el-cheapo meritline stylii that didn't work with it at all -- I'll have to try those on the Touchpad. The HTC Flyer is supposed to have a nice stylus too, but I'm not sure if it has anything special to play nice with the Flyer hardware.
The other thing is - do you have a worthwhile note-taking or drawing app to use it with? I couldn't really find anything that seemed that great in the app catalog. I downloaded one drawing app, but it seemed a little kiddie-oriented.
Just a short info: flyer is another universe...it´s an active digitizer which is just working with special hardware...you can´t use an active digitizer on a normal capacitive screen

We're in a TouchPad section, not an Android one
I got this one : Targus AMM01 , and it's ok :

for french people :

You can find it in "two-in-one" and even "3-in-one"
There's also the Kensington one , longer, ok too :

I know in what section i am, are you? Touchpad = WebOS + uncoming Android. Im giving him a suggestion for what to use if he migrates to Android when it comes. So if you got a better suggestion, go ahead.
Till then, check this out:

k, so I have three, here's my review
1) generic rubber-tipped one - it was basically a plastic straw with a rubber bubble (hollow inside) at the end. It was ok for pointing, sucked at anything that needs a longer press since it was smooshy.
2) Dagi p501 - Works great once its held at the proper angle. The angle is not hard to hit, but once off, it feels a bit weird since it's not symmetrical.
3) Dagi p504 - GET THIS ONE. It's great, can easily write with it and its got a flexible tip, so it's always in full contact with the screen.
Caveat - the hp touchpad kinda sucks for note taking. When trying to draw a circle, it turns into more of an octagon. Maybe it's the application (Just draw, got from hp app cat) but i tried to do stuff with my viewsonic gtab and it was smooth enough to write cursive (though I had to remember how to write cursive)

Yes, that's the one... I have one of the "lite" versions on the NC. It's really good. I also have another one that's for note-taking, but you can write on the screen and it will put it inline with other text like in a notebook. Hopefully apps like this someday make their way to the TP one way or another.
I was wondering if someone could post a video of a stylus being used on the TF700 for drawing and writing. I couldn't find any good videos and would love a demonstration and possibly comparison to the TF201.
I am planning on buying a new tablet as my TF201 had many problems in addition to the terrible digitizer and I want to use it for notes in college. Currently deciding between TF700 and Galaxy Note 10.1 once some reviews come out. Only problem is I would like decent handwriting and a keyboard so this is a big player in my decision.
Any help is appreciated!
Can't compare it to the TF201 since I've never used it, but here's a very brief demo I threw together:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsqcDM02lKU
My general experience is that how well a device draws is as much a function of the stylus as the device itself. I'm using this:
http://www.amazon.com/New-Trent-Micro-Knit-Retractable-IMP63T/dp/B007FXMOV8/
It's the best I've ever used, and pretty cheap too.

Awesome, thank you so much. It looks much more accurate and responsive than the TF201 was. I couldn't even draw a circle on it without there being flat parts around the edges.
I already have the "New Trent Limir" stylus which I assume has the same tip or a very similar one to the one you used so I should be good there.
I'm using the Adonis Jot Flip, works so much better with the Infinity vs. my old Prime, both in responsiveness (from touch to registration of touch) and accuracy (I notate in cursive, in rather small handwriting).

If you want a stylus for any real sketching...and dont want to go with the samsung note line of devices....then pick the adonit jot stylus. You can buy directly from them or on amazon, or possibly elsewhere. Awesome stylus. Great customer service. The stylus comes with one tip, and I broke it. I was putting it on in the wrong way and broke it, completely my fault, and they sent me two free replacements for the one that I broke. No cost to me. So I get *two* for the *one* that *I* broke. Good service, if you ask me.
Not to mention I have tried many stylus devices, and never found one I liked until this one.
Also, android police have a great review between the tf201, tf300, and tf700
In part of that review they did a small spot on the drawing.
"Since a few people vented to me that digitizer performance was sorely underappreciated in tablets, I ran a simple "test" using Sketchbook Mobile and a capacitive stylus: draw an X from corner to corner, write the name of the tablet, and maybe doodle a little. The results more or less speak for themselves, but in a nutshell: Prime is crap, TF300 is good, and TF700 is fantastic."

I'm still waiting on my hand stylus. If it doesn't work, I will probably end up giving it to one of my friends and getting a JOT. I want something I can write with to take notes and not have to carry a pad of paper with me.

Thanks for the article! Wow, the TF700 does look great compared to the prime. I'm having a hard time waiting for Note 10.1 reviews so I might just spring for the TF700.
The Jot looks great also, I have heard a lot of good things about it. Probably a worthy investment for my purposes.
Hello guys,
First of all I'm sorry if my grammar or general "english use" sucks but be patient, it's not my mother language.
I would like to ask some help taking a decision.
Let me introduce my needs first:
I'm on the market to replace my old and trusty iPad mini (i know, i know Apple's devices bring horrible nightmares to all XDA users). I'd want a compact tablet (8" to 8.4 screen) that can easily slide in my bag and follow me everywhere, from university lectures to various trips. One of the main function I'd want to improve on is handwritten notes: as it is on my iPad i can't do it and I end up simply downloading professor's slides to read them easier but still writing up to 3000 pages of notes per year, and you know that paper loves to get lost or hide when you need it. Combining it with the constant need of raw power for games i'm left with very few choices, none of them 100% suited for me (unless Samsung decides to include his majesty the S-pen on the Tab S 8.4).
So, coming back to what i'm willing to ask to you, Nvidia Shield Tablet owners: would you reccomend this tablet for hand written notes? And by that i mean: writing on this tablet is almost as fast and comfortable as writing on the good old paper with an ink pen?
If not, what else would you buy, considering that the ability to run smoothly something like Asphalt 8 it's a must have?
Thank you very much in advance.
Matteo
I bought this tablet to replace a Galaxy Note 10.1
I use the Shield Tablet with the MyScript Smart Note app.
Comparing this to Galaxy Note 10.1 + LectureNotes app (My fav at the time of ownership), it's pretty close, but not quite as good.
Writing is accurate enough for me, but not quite as good as the note.
And the smaller screen makes it a little harder to write as well (Worth it for the smaller size to carry around though).
Compared to paper, I think the convenience is way better.
The only real downside there is the lack of friction on the 'paper'.
Even with an invisishield screen protector, the tablet writes a lot smoother than a piece of paper. This is by far the biggest downside in my opinion, but it's easy enough to get used to.
Great Tablet for everything not just writing

First of I would like to tell you I faced your problem at the beginning of the year.
I own a LG G Pad 8.3 and a Nvidia shield tablet (NST). The NST is recently purchased so I cannot say its perfect yet when it comes to writing. In my opinion the option of having palm rejection in the NST is delightful which makes writing comfortable. I am currently using Smart note as well but I also use WPS Office (kingsoft Office)--(with the stylus beta app) for handwriting and converting into text if I need something compatible with Microsoft word. The stylus is slippery on the NST I had better control with the LG since I had a screen protector and was using the joint sylus pro which I think is amazing for writing. ( I am actually thinking of adding a screen protector just to use the joint stylus pro with the NST because rumor has it it scratches the screen). The hand recognition in the NST is really good and I think good apps from the play store will give you the experience you are looking for.
I hope this helps, if you have questions I am happy to assist.
sorry if the writing is messy but I got to go for now.
Good luck

The G-Pad was one of my first thoughts having a G3 wich I'm loving (almost), but I'm not sure it is an improvement in practicality over the iPad.
I've seen that wierd stylus and I thought it was insanely expensive, but now I see it's only 30$...Worth it?
Being an automotive engineering student, my notes are all about graphs, schemes and sketches so I need accuracy and predictibility in how the tablet translates my movements as well as a reliable software that ignores palm and wrist inputs on the screen (that's my biggest complain on the iPad).

If I was looking for a serious note taking piece of hardware... Yeah, I'd probably go with a note. I would also probably invest in a separate active stylus to use with it. The Note 10.1(2012) came with a pretty cheap feeling one. Light hollow plastic, not fun to use.
What you lose by going that route is a good AOSP-like experience. I don't like Samsung S touch wiz ui at all. And you can flash an aosp rom on it, but the stylus loses some features.

I don't have the exact english phrase to say that but I'll translate litterally: seems like you're reading my toughts...
I spent the last 4 years of my life as an Apple fan boy because i was thinking that android was only Samsung...The touchwiz is insanely overloaded so that is my biggest concern about following the "samsung route"...
Anyways, today I took a look at the tab s 8.4 in first person and I have to admit that the display is amazing...Colors are cartoonish but so appealing I can't ignore it...
Unfortunately I'm not able to find a store with an NST to try here in Italy...
I was playing today with the note pro from Samsung and I must say that it is for note taking way better then the nVidia Shield Tablet I own myself although I hate the touch wiz layer. Nevertheless I use one note now on my NST for note taking.

First congrats on the Tab S 8.4 and you are right amazing screen, really vivid and nice colors I've always liked Samsung's screens; unfortunately it stops at their screens . But why didnt you take a note if you wanted the S-pen and S-notes. Any way I hope it works out for you. Some great apps are Smart notes which has good hand recognition and lecture notes where I thing would help you with your graphing.
Regrading the LG G Pad 8.3 I'm still using it for standard media consumption like reading and browsing the net while my NST is mainly for games and the occasional web surf if its in my hands. And I'm still using the LG for writing my notes via Kingsoft office and stylus beta has my input method (best hand to text app i've used)
Anyways good luck.
