So i want to buy a android tablet. i will so be going to college, and i find it was easier to carry tablet with ebooks instead of the actual book.
I have AT&T. so their tablet will be the Galaxy Tab, which is okay for 549.99
but then the Motorola Xoom (wifi version) came out for 599.99 which i find way better only problem would be the 3G. i hate verizon btw.
and of course there are many other to come in the next months.
so can you all guide me in which direction will be the best for me. thanks

If only you'd read the rest of it and realise it is now a combined general thread.
I would imagine you would be needing something with exceptional battery life and an excellent screen (particularly for viewing in sunlight). Something like the pixel qi technology, the Notion Ink Adam for example, however whether the Notion Ink delivers on what it promises remains to be seen, its been in development for a long time.
If you are spending that sort of money I would highly recommend getting a demo of the devices and I would also consider setting the iPad2 as a benchmark, if you are paying around the same price, then you should at least aim for a screen/battery better than that, or you might as well get one of those.

As far as I can tell they are all quite similar spec, although not looked in detail.
Regarding hack-ability, keep an eye out for which ones are rooted etc, with the hardware specs being so good and being from main stream manufacturers chances are they will be hacked (I imagine just too tempting).
I would expect that the Viewsonic's battery and screen won't be a patch on the others, as a lesser manufacturer, but then neither will the price.
For me, I've decided to go the cheep route, since I don't have the cash to get the more expensive ones or to upgrade them when they get superseded in 12 - 18 months.
I think after all the atrix with the lapdock will be my final choice

I have a notion ink Adam - pixel qi, 3g.
It's a great piece of hardware. Fast, good camera, light, the pixel qi works well.
The down sides are:
- the Eden UI still has a few bugs. I'm looking to run Ubuntu anyway so not an issue for me
- pixel qi is not the same as a kindle. Similar, but pixel qi is more for usage in the sun.

im after some of your advice as to the best tablet, im going to ask in the xoom and galaxy forums as well, but id like your opinions on what is the best tablet to buy, obviously you guys are using the transformer already, and are happily modding the hell out of them, so you may have experience with the others as well.
i am trying to find somewhere which has all 3 which i can look at side by side, but in the UK im pretty much left with Pc world/Currys.. so i thought id do the next best thing and talk to people who have/use them.
i have narrowed my choices to;
Motorola Xoom,
Asus Transformer
Samsung Galaxy 10.1
if possible can you let me know what your experiences are like with any of them.

Side by side you will probably like the Galaxy Tab which is much cleaner looking, a little higher quality, and has a nicer screen. However, the Transformer doesn't cost as much.
For me at least, the cost of the Galaxy Tab is unreasonable and the difference does not justify an extra $100 (or $200 as was my case).
If money was no object, I would probably go with the Tab, but since money is an object I went with the Transformer.
I've only had my TF for a couple days, but already I am very happy with my purchase. I feel at the $399 price point it was the best value for what I would be able to get out of it compared to the Tab. The Tab has a lot to offer but for what I was looking to get out of my tablet I don't think you could beat the value of the TF. Good luck in making your decison.

This is the reason why I waited till I could get the TF for 255 new instead of the usual 399.
That said, anything other than the TF you will lose productivity due to lack of keyboard dock.
If you don't need the keyboard, the Samsung is hard to beat. (Unless you are Apple and choose to compete in the courts instead of the marketplace.)
I didn't think much of the Zoom when I tested one but it was the original HC 3.0. That said it was more expensive than the TF as well even including the dock. Samsung looses for me because it doesn't have SD card expansion built in which I think was a poor choice to make. It is a nice tab though, no argument there. TF has it all and as a bonus is almost pure HC, no TouchWiz or anything like that bolted into it. Its not perfect but especially with the last couple of updates its a very good piece of kit.
xoom is already too bulky, too old, too expensive
I sold my TF after one month - ipad is still way ahead of all tablets - but I think it doesnt really matter if you choose Tab or TF - they work pretty much the same - just go to store, feel them and take the one you like more - or TF if you type a lot - the dock is quite good

Where did you find the TF for $255?
I cant comment on the other 2 but im well impressed with my TF, i cant fault the build quality and the IPS screen is awesome. I didnt think i wanted the keyboard dock but glad i did and it really transforms the TF. Ive only had mine a week and was gonna hold off but theres nothing written in stone when the newer tabs are comming esp in the uk apart from sonys new offering which is due 18th sept. Im a real sony fanboy and was gonna pre-order the S1 but reading reviews of the how easily the screen and casing marked i settled for the Gorilla glassed, matt finished TF and am glad i did, it really is a nice bit of tech
AFAIK, the IPS Display on the Transformer is unbeatable by any other Android tablet. I'm not sure if the Galaxy Tab has an IPS Panel, but I know the Xoom does not.

The Samsumg Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not have a IPS display it has a PLS display (Samsung's equivalent to the IPS). Most consider the Samsung display a but better (better color reproduction) and the viewing angles are just as good. They are very close but the Samsung has an edge.
The only thing that kept me from the 10.1 is the lack of MicroSD slot and the extra $100 (not to mention the TF has Micro HDMI out and an excellent docking solution).
Either one will be a good choice. Just depends it the expandable memory and video out matter to you as well as saving $100 or if you rather have thinner, lighter (and stylish) tab for a $100 premium. It's up to you!
I've heard that the Galaxy Tab uses IPS (or as you say Samsung calls it, PLS), but I haven't heard anything about it being any better than normal IPS. Either way, I imagine it can't be much of a significant improvement, if at all, since it's essentially the same technology.
On another note, though not everybody will agree, I can't think of any reason to purchase the Galaxy Tab or XOOM over the TF. I feel like there are numerous reasons why I'd prefer the TF though, especially over the XOOM, including: the display, the price, the build quality, expandability (extra SD slot, USB slots, keyboard + extra battery, etc).. I could keep going. I suppose the XOOM and Galaxy Tab offer 3G/4G connectivity, but personally I never understood why anybody would want to pay for that. I don't think I'd ever buy anything but a Wi-Fi tablet, so that aspect doesn't affect me. Again, obviously not everybody will agree with me on that though. Aside from these things, I feel like the three tablets are very similar. They all have similar processors, memory, hard drive space, version of Android, etc.
Considering the Tab and the Transformer are the same price, but the Transformer is higher spec and comes with a proper keyboard, it's a nobrainer....
The only spanner in the works, is that the Xoom is currently heavilly discounted in the UK.
Personally, I would still avoid the xoom, the European support sucks (slow updates), and I could never spend even that money on a tablet-only device after using a proper one with a dock.
Transformer is the best one
The xoom has a better build quality imo.. Its aluminum unibody is better than my transformers plastic casing-.-
Still for the price, Transformer all the way. If you can afford it, the Tab 10.1.
Or wait for the Quad core tablets coming this year.

- has the best software support
- huge hardware modding possibilities (500Gb HDD on the keyboard dock, extra battery)
- microsd slot
- hdmi port on the tablet
- LCD screen has a "true color" approach, recommended for video/photo editing
Cons:
- build quality is average (light bleed, creaking noises when u push the back)
- even thou it has SRS speakers, sound is still a little faint
- bezel easily scratches
- battery life is a bit average
haha i already got really small scratches on the microSD slot (from inserting/removing) after 2 months of usage.
Xoom -
Pros:
- best build quality
- soft touch back
- better range/availability of accessories (case, screen protectors, etc.)
- microsd slot
Cons:
- a bit old
- expensive
- average screen panel
- heavy
Galaxy Tab 10.1 -
Pros:
- has the best range/availability of accessories (case, screen protectors, etc.)
- sleek design
- lighter
- has one of the loudest speakers
- longer battery life (as a tablet)
- screen has a nice color saturation (good for viewing movies)
- more of a browser/media player on the go
Cons:
- plastic backside

- accessories needed for using USB/HDMI
Just a quick overview: I was in Best Buy the other night, and fortunately, they had all 3 machines not only powered on, but also on WiFi. I couldn't resist this, since I'm beginning to seriously look at a 10" tab to replace my oft maligned (And rightly so) Gentough78. (Yeah, yeah.. I know) Anyway, having all 3 side by side was nice. Here's my thoughts:
Screen: The winner was the Thrive. It had very good contrast. The other 2 were completely acceptable though.
Case: I like the rubberized backing of the Thrive a LOT. That being said, it was a close 2nd place to the Xformer (Heretofore called the XF). Didn't care for the clunkiness of the Iconia.
WiFi performance: The Iconia stuttered a lot on the youtube video I was playing. The other 2 seemed to handle this just fine.
WiFi Tethering: The XF was the only one of the 3 that saw my hotspot on my Epic. This is a pretty big deal.
Snappiness: Hard to tell the diff between the 3, honestly. They were all nice.
Dock: Obviously this is an awesome on the XF
So... overall, as it stands, I'm seriously looking at the XF as my tab of choice. Just thought I'd share my thoughts here. How's the tun.ko working out on IPSEC VPN???
Fellow epic user! I was faced with the same decision and got the TF because of the hotspot issue. I have no regrets and i dont even have the dock. I use my stylus for most everything. I also like how the OS has no annoying UI over top.

i currently have both the thrive and transformer and i have to say you are wrong, the IPS display on the transformer is noticeably better. It's richer in color and has better viewing angles. I am returning the thrive because its just too fat!
Either way, they are good choices. I really don't need the ports on the Thrive, and I really like the TF's weight and thinness compared to the Thrive since I usually throw it in my bag, or walk around carrying it in my hand when I'm using it as a Mp3 player (which is all the time). Since the Thrive has a LED screen, blacks are probably darker than on the TF but I haven't tested.

I agree, I found the TF screen to be superior. The only other andriod tablet I thought had a display that could compete with the TF was the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Did you check to see if the brightness setting where set to the same approximate
brightness.
You can't test anything in 20 minutes at best buy. They all are a tie because ech line has a feature specific to its self. I think it comes down to personal preference and how will it be used. I chose the Asus because of the free software Splashtop and Polaris, but do wn a Acer too. The Acer states hooked up to my TV with wireless keyboard and mouse to stream movies or surf the web.

Nope... should have. In all fairness, the screens were in pretty mucky shape too. They all had streaks and smudges from all of the dirty fingers of the crumb crunchers who had played with them. The 2 Xooms wouldn't even come on, so I didn't check them out (Although in all fairness, the $100 extra kind of excluded them anyway)
When I get a little closer to being actually able to afford one (I'm just over 1/2 way there now), I'll go give them a lot closer look, and I'll probably bring a microfibre cloth. I'd never let any of my screens get that nasty.
And I'll pay extra close attention to the viewing angles. That's something I hadn't thought of.

The Xoom, the screen isn't as good as the others. The color temp and viewing angle are inferior.

I bought the Iconia and returned it. I just thought the plastic port area on the sites ruined the high-end feel of the brushed metal. And it was too heavy to comfortably hold while reading. I love the ports though. The Toshiba tablet was just too huge. My TF is great. But build quality is so-so; I got a squeeky area around the power button. No big deal though.

Sure, but with a locked down market and running fast through the testing since other people were looking, it was the 1st thing that came to mind. I'm not a professional reviewer, I just play one on TV...

I'd get the transformer. If you're referencing the BF deal then the Asus has 16gb for $250 while the Thrive is 8gb for $275. To me, that's no contest.
So my mother in law got my 7 year old a tablet for christmas this year. Nice, only it was the horrifyingly worthless Sylvania that Toys R Us and CVS were giving away on black friday. So my boy thinks he's got a tablet just like dad's Galaxy Tab 10.1, but not so much. It's the thought that counts, right?
I thought maybe it had been rooted and could run CM7 or something, but no such luck. Locked down and it doesn't have the enthusiastic dev community around that I am used to with other devices... to say the least. Compile that with the substandard hardware and it's a paperweight. This is the type of device that gives android tablets a bad name.
He's disappointed, it's a brand new tablet, and to him should work like the others he's used, but of course doesn't. I'd planned on handing down my Incredible when I upgrade and setting it up as a wifi only device for him, but am considering just purchasing an inexpensive tablet that is decent quality and fully enabled (or can/will be).
I'm perfectly comfortable with rooting and flashing roms. I would like something with either current or expected support from CM. I'd like something that could run things at least as smoothly as the incredible can.
Right now I'm looking at a few different options:
Nook Tablet - Pros: nice hardware, should run CM9, expandable storage Cons: No camera
Kindle Fire - Pros: works out of the box with the Amazon app store, should run CM9, $199. Cons: only 8GB storage, not expandable, hardware not quite as good as the Nook Tablet, No camera
Acer Iconia A100 - Pros: Out of the box it is complete. Tegra 2. Expandable storage. dual cameras. except for the shorter battery life it compares to my Galaxy Tab. Cons: over my price range of $300.
Opinions? Am I wrong for dismissing Velocity Micro, Archos and the like without giving them a shot? Any good deals I'm overlooking?
CM9 on the Nook Tab? Doesn't it have a locked bootloader. I'd stay away from it.
Kindle Fire is nice but I think it lacks Bluetooth and cameras (which are becoming important for tabs)

Agreed if you can get your hands on a touchpad. Or maybe pick up a 16 gig playbook (199) it's only a matter of time till a developer on here gets android up on it and the hardware is pretty solid

Awesome hardware (for the going rate of $225), 10" screen, and big following here. webOS is nice, elegant, simple, and stable. But, there are very few apps. I'm not a fan of Gingerbread on a 10" screen, but ICS is coming along, and GB should fill the android and app craving until its here.
I almost got a Vizio tablet ... but as you said a cheap tablet with poor popularity here is a bad combo. I don't regret for a second spending a little more a getting the TouchPad over the Vizio tab, or Fire.

OK, some questions about the Touchpad...
The 4:3 screen, most android apps are developed with 16:9 screens in mind. I can see this not being an issue with an app which uses a dynamic layout, but with games which have static assets how does this work out?
This tab will be used primarily for games and children's books, how is compatibility running CM7, any issues?
Once CM7 is installed is it seamless? WebOS holds no interest for me because of the lack of apps.
If I go the ebay route, I can likely get an A100 for the same price as a touchpad, does the TP still hold up?

I think the Touchpad recommendations are spot on, but I'll tell you that the Acer A100 is a good device. I got one for my daughter (same age as your kid) and have been happy with it. No rooting, running both Android Market and Amazon Appstore. Found it for around US $250 on Amazon.

I've had a similar tale. Currently my 4yo has confiscated my HD2 running a CM7 ROM be hes practically taken over his mothers transformer. Needless to say she's not happy about that and he doesn't get his hands on my flyer without supervision so I've been thinking about getting him his own tablet.
I have an old 7 inch tab that i've had since the dawn of time it seems and and it worked well with the help od slatedroid before XDA opened up to tablets. Once we upgraded it was his defacto tab, until he broke the power switch.
My boys has had a lot of exposure so hes good with technology but hes young and not always as aware of the value of things as I'd like. I'd love to get him something to save wear and tear on his mothers tablet but id like something that he can load his existing android apps on and just enjoy.
I'll be watching this thread closely for any suggestions that aren't a touchpad.
I would also recommend the Touchpad. I also have a kindle fire and the form factor does not lend itself to the comfortable web browsing experience that you get with a Touchpad + CM7 and Maxthon/Dolphin/Boat.
It is good for reading books, and checking the web/email in a bind - but screen real estate is limited and the lack of hard keys is at times annoying.

I am running cm7 on my wife's nook color. Works well for when my boy wants to play games, but for reading, the original nook software is better, so I just have a dual boot setup... it just runs cm7 off the sd card. I like the setup.

Kindle Fire is a really nice tablet in hand, I know your complaints were technical ones, but out of those cheap tablets I still vote for the Kindle Fire.

I think c9 will be a good option down the road on a kindle. It is not ready for prime time yet.

IcedCube here. I have in my possession a Galaxy Tab 7" and for the life of me, I love the little thing (I recently got a ICS Chinese Tab but it's a different kettle of fish. ). I carry it everywhere I go, as it's a beautiful size. Looked at the Galaxy Note, and went "Pfft. So what? My sexy little Galaxy Tab is what I want". And even if it's a little "fat", it feels like a tank. I've dropped from chest height onto a concrete floor by accident and it survived. Not a single scratch or crack in the screen. And it had it's protective OEM cover on it too.
Recently (okay, maybe one or two months ago), I got rid of my Iconia Tab A501 (3G). Kinda feel sorry I did that though, because as soon as I loaded the leaked ICS up on it, I felt the Tegra power. Anyway....
My friend recently got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9" and I was surprised at it's size and performance. So I guess I am a little envious; but whatever. I was wondering if you guys could help me suggest a tablet. I know I can search google myself, but here we go.
My local PC store has a ASUS Transformer TF201 I believe, but not sure if it's 3G or not. It looks pretty nice and that keyboard is awesome - replenishes vital juice while you type. I wish the Iconia had a keyboard for it, because that Dock connector was quite under-used...
Needs to support hardware video decoding. This helps me along boring car trips, I can load up my anime and have the H/W decode the x264 video stream, without my battery life being depleted quickly. I know Tegra video decoding got really good in ICS, but yeah.
Hardware accessories. Optional, but if the tablet has options (like keyboard) or other things that I can buy to add on to it if I wanted to, then that would give it bonus points.
I know how the Tegra 2 was a bit poor in comparison with other tablets, so if it's not nVidia, then I guess it might be interesting. I'll take a look at nVidia tabs too, so I'm not ruling them out.
Bonus points if there's custom ROMs for it. Even more bonus points if there's AOKP or CM9 for it.
On that note, unlocked bootloader. I'm looking at you, Acer.
At least 10" screen, unless the 8.9" screen has a high resolution. My chinese tab runs at 1024x600 and it's a little meh. I miss the 1280x800 screen that the Iconia Tab has. The screen should also be sharp, because I don't like blurry text.
3G Support. Because what's a tablet to me if I don't have WiFi access on the road? I know I can carry around a pocket WiFi hotspot but then you have to recharge it's batteries and all that crap. Also must be GSM since Australia doesn't have CDMA anymore (was killed off in 2005/2006).
At least 8GB or 16GB internal storage. Bonus points if the tablet has microSD slot, so I can slip in an external microSD filled up with my songs, etc.
Decent battery life. Don't want something that will conk out in less than half a day. Do note that I would be using it on the road, so it should be able to survive moderate web browsing use.
Price tag that won't give the wallet a heart attack. If possible, less than $500. I can go over this, but if I can get it under $500 (or even see if anything's up in the XDA marketplace.... now there's an idea...)

I think, that a Acer Iconia A510 would be nice. That is the tablet i buy in the next few days, if it is available in germany.
I hope, that the display and the reaction time is good on it.
The power with a quadcore and enough of RAM in a 1280-panel would be very nice for everything and the price is OK for that.
I tested the Sony Tablet S-Tab and it was very very nice to handle. It was (only) a dualcore, but it was very smooth to surf and use all the apps. But now the hardware is to old and the price to high for that.

Sony S-Tab, eh? I never heard of that. Sounds rather interesting - I guess I'll add that to the list of "random research" to do.

samsung tablets r surely gaining momentum recently but i dont lik samsung designs and UI. if u hav taste in good designs and UI styles and special unique features i recomment Sony tablets ..they are awesome and iam sure u wil fall in love after evaluating a sony tablet.. just try on..
Sony tablet S is very nice very good.. pricing not much bad.. its worth.. soon getting ICS update.. its really fantastic piece of hardware..
galaxy tabs are rather feels lik boring aftr a while of use.. othr tabs just feels dull and there isnt anything special of its kind.. but i guarantee sony delivers everything u need..its truly of an impressive feel u ever get..

Looked at this. Saw a WiFi-only one, looks pretty interesting. However, when I eBay'd a 3G version, the price tag broke my wallet. Also looked at the Sony P Tab, which has 3G and Dual 5.5" screens (looks like a clamshell). Price tag stung the wallet.
I also took a look at the Iconia Tab A510 model, and it looks like it'll suit the bill. The price tag is still is a bit of an issue, but I guess I can sell my Galaxy Tab on the XDA marketplace to get some cash.
I dont know the size but Asus Padphone?
You thought about the Nexus 7?
...sin you already have the tab. And they worked with Asus on it.

ASUS PadFone: Possible, but looks like it might be out of my league. GSMArena states it's around 610 EUR, which means... according to XE.com... 754.420 Australian Dollar. That's some serious cash right there, and would also mean that it would replace my Galaxy Nexus...
Nexus 7: No 3G version I believe. Gotta have something that does 3G since it's impractical to carry around a modem in my pocket every single place I go.
Galaxy Note also looks like a worthy contender.
I'll probably get flamed but oh well. Get the new iPad. You might not be able to get the 3G version but you should be able to get the wifi model for your budget. If you've got a smart phone then most likely you can tether to it for 3G access providing you have a decent data bundle.
The screen outs any Android tablet. You'll get a better app choice, it's fast and runs extremely smooth.
I've got a Teg 2 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and my iPad destroys it in everything. Ok it doesn't have flash nor will Jelly Bean. No expandable storage, cloud storage fixes that, you can jailbreak it easily and get iFile and get the camera connector kit for a few dollars then you can hook up an SD card for those longer journeys.
It simply is the best tablet I've tried and now I see why it is widely popular. Jailbreaking it opens a ton of useful features.

Ever since I know how the new iPads and such are made and how much effort you have to take into consideration when trying to repair it yourself, I wouldn't even consider one. Plus, I will not support a company that is trying to eliminate Android. Call me crazy, but ever since Android got into my blood, it's been calling my name every time I attempt to walk away from the OS.
I have had an WiFi only iPad in the past, and while it was very nice, I found when I went back to an Android device, I felt refreshed knowing I'm using something loved by the community and I have the freedom to root and install a custom ROM if I feel like it. On iOS, it's locked down and while you can regain root access by jailbreaks, can I download a completely different ROM on the iPad and use that? Nope.
I understand your views and I'm not flaming anyone, I'm just stating that I'm a Droid and I'm not going to let myself be corrupted by Apple. I've had my share of Apple devices in the past (owned 2 iPhone 3G, a MacBook, 2 PowerPC Mac Minis (one of which I still own) and an iPad), and yeah.
More suggestions welcome!

Tbh I am so annoyed that the nexus isn't a 7.7 ... it just looks too narrow at 7" and i'm contemplating whether to get one or not. 7.7 or Note IMO

I looked at the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 and i must say, i think that hits the "I'm sold!" Button. The screen looks pretty good and the resolution is a nice 1280x800. 7" normally gives you a 800x480 screen resolution, and that is a little skinny if you hold it upright.
Get any if the ASUS Transformer Pads. You can get an older model that will definitely fit your budget and your needs. The transformer tablets have FAR AND AWAY the best battery life when equipped with the attachable keyboard. I believe it has 3G capability. It has a 1200x800 screen if I remember correctly. It has a Tegra processor depending on the model, and is upgradeable to ICS.
Or just get the LATEST Transformer and go slightly over budget, but it will satisfy all your other needs. (Tegra 3! )

Thanks everyone for your comments. I decided to buy another Iconia Tab (A501), because I have used it in the past and I really liked it. Plus, the recent development with the Patched Bootloader means that I can run another OS on the tab if I wish to. So yeah.

This. I have the iPad 3 and love it, but I honestly wish I never sold my iPad 2. The gains from the screen are not worth the added thickness and weight, shorter battery life, ungodly charging time, and frame rate drops when gaming. Unfortunately now that I have used a tablet with such a high resolution, I couldn't go back to the iPad 2 even if I wanted to. I wish I never saw this screen :/ BTW,This is coming from an Android fan who just preordered the Nexus 7.
