[Q] First time installing rom - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I am a first time android owner. I have tried to read through all of the forums that I can on xda, but can't quite find the right answer.
I have a samsung galaxy s 4g, successfully rooted with superoneclick, no problem.
I am now interested in using custom roms, and have bought and installed Rom Manager on the reference from a friend. I have flashed CWM 3.2.0.0, yet I am unable to backup my current ROM. When it reboots, it puts me into recovery 3e and I can't do anything but restart. I am leery about using Odin, and about the same as Heimdall as I would rather be able to backup what I currently have.
Any help or directions to a thread I have missed would be greatly appreciated
phone stats
firmware 2.2.1
Kernal 2.6.32.9
build FROYO.VUVKB5

You'll have to use Odin at least once, and I believe (not positive on this) ROM manager causes problems on these phones. I'm not sure how to post links from my phone, but look in the development forum, go into the ref. Bible, down in guides theres a detailed tutorial called GB ext4 starter pack or something along those lines.
It will set you up with everything you need you just need to install a ROM on your sd card, I would recommend ICBINB kj1 as that's what I'm on and it performs great, but you should also give Valhalla a look.

ROM MANAGER DOES NOT WORK WITH THIS PHONE.
You must install Dr Honks kernel and it will give you red CWM. Read the Bible and the Noobs guide and it walks you through everything step by step.

He's talking about my guide. You can click on the link in my signature. "GB starter pack"

Just a comment: if you want to stick with froyo instead of updating to gingerbread for some reason, click the "Bali v3.3 + CWM" link in FB's sig. That will allow you to install drhonk's kernel, which will allow you to access the CWM Recovery correctly. Then you can make backups and flash ROMs for froyo, or consider updating to gb with FB's "GB starter pack" link.
I made the same mistake with ROM Manager

PS, thanks ultima

Thank you for the links and the direct answers!
My only other question is about step 1 in FB's BG ext4 starter. when you say instal busybox onto the sd card, is it just placing the whole zip file onto, or do I need to create a file and place the two folders inside?

install the whole zip to the root of the sd card
do not extract or anything

I never said install...
After formatting the SD card with the steps above, put your favorite GB ROM, and install_busybox.zip onto the SD card
So it's moving the zip files, NOT extracting them.

I realized that I had misread it shortly after I posted. But I just thought I would ask clarify.
Everything worked like a charm!

How to get Dr. Honk's KG4 with root+Voodoo+Recovery working!

Hello,
I wasn't able to post a response in the Development forums yet, so please move this thread if you see fit and sorry as I'm still new to posting here.
------------------------------------------------------------------
I am using the original full leaked version of the ROM.
If you are having issues using ODIN to flash Dr. Honk's amazing new kernel: [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032] Or if you are having issues with not seeing your SD card after successfully flashing the kernel try the steps below:
If your having issues with ODIN, get Winrar and extract the zimage from the tar file and use heimdall and it should flash correctly. After you flash the kernel and boot up, you may notice your not seeing your SD card. Try going to recovery which you can now! Wipe your data<factory> then your Cache, then wipe your Dalvik Cache and use fix permissions. Reboot and you should now see your SD card, only catch to this kernel is Dr. Honk's forgot to add busybox, so I would go to the market and get it then you can also use Voodoo lag fix.
It's working great for me! Good Job Dr. Honk!
You would likely get a little more assistance if you would give more info (what room you're currently using; where you're stuck).
honestly, if you're having issues with this install you would probably do better to wait.

LoL, no problem man...I just figured it would be good to give back to this great community with some helpfull info for once
thanks for the tip!
dont know if this helps or not but this is how i got mine working:
i flashed kg4 leak then did dsextons gb rom root,
then i installed busy box and installed on phone,
then flashed drhonks new kernal for kg4 (his new download works)
now everything works great in=m on ext 4 system cache and data and also have cwm recovery support
Thanks for the tips.
I tried all above, the SD shows right, but I still cannot have lagfix properly work and convert EXT4. Everytime system restart, it reports not enough space on SD card, but actually I have 14 GB available on my SD.
I did my flash exactly like jdubb. it worked flawlessly. Thanks drhonk for everything you do for us

Yes, I did. I checked the log, it shows the /sdcard avaialbe space is negtive like "-1353 MB". Really strange.

Hunter, can you try this:
pop in an other micro sd, boot into CWM, format sd, enable voodoo ext4 and reboot.
if you don't have a spare one, backup files from the current sd card then proceed as above.
Can someone post the precise links and directions that they used to get this working, please! Much appreciated!
Bro, I really appreciate your quick tip, but I tried it, the issue remains.
Having been searched XDA whole afternoon, still have no idea

I was reviewing the source code of voodoo lagfix, just feel like the my sdcard available space is not properly read from lagfix code.
Not sure if you guys still using the factory SD card, I am using the 16GB one came with the phone.
Issues with SD card.
For those of you with issues on their SD card, did you by chance try enabling lagfix via Voodoo Control app? That is what I had to do to get lagfix working properly. I disabled it via recovery and then enabled it via control app. Somehow got it working that way lol.
Unable to answer inbound calls
The install went flawless and phone works great. I do have a major issue though, inbound calls are cause a force close and create an instand missed call. Is anyone else having issues being able to answer inbound calls? I can make calls just fine, it just refuses to let me answer a call.
I am currently running:
2.3.4 KG 6 with the 2.6.35.7 Kernal.
This worked great for me on kg4, but for some reason i flash this on kg6 and after the flash boots up fine. But whenever i restart my phone i get a boot loop at the samsung screen. So confused Any ideas?

I was getting the same thing when I turned on Voodoo so I went back to recovery to disable Voodoo (I had to use ADB since the phone wasn't functional long enough to use the Quickboot app).
Then (per crackpot in a dev thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16264528&postcount=222) booted back up and used the Busybox Installer from stericson to make sure Busybox was installed into bin and not xbin.
Then back to recovery and enable Voodoo.

[CWM] Busybox Installer (Feb 1)

A Team Nerd release
Raver and I had been discussing how to get Ext4 working on GB right away and we came up with this. You can flash this right after flashing your favorite GB ROM and you can enable Ext4 right away.
UPDATES
Feb 1, 2012
* The installer should now automatically mount the /system partition so you don't have to do anything but flash this!
* Updated the verbose output during the install to make it a little more readable
INSTRUCTIONS
All of this must be done in a single CWM sitting, NO REBOOTS BETWEEN STEPS
1) Put this file on your SD card, along with your favorite GB ROM
2) Flash the GB ROM, let it finish
3) Flash install_busybox.zip, let it finish
4) Go into the voodoo menu > enable lagfix and /system lagfix on
5) Reboot and listen to Linda say Voodoo lagfix is enabled at the end of her speech.
NOTES
* If you're having trouble mounting the SD card, check out sexton's guide! It worked for me. Always make sure to back up your SD card! [GUIDE] CONVERTING EXT4 ON gingerbread
* You don't have to check mounts for this as the installer automatically mounts everything.
* So far I've only tested this on the KH2 leak. I Odined KH2, odined the KG4 custom kernel, then rebooted straight into recovery to perform the steps above.

You are a genious! This is hugely helpful!
I was just getting mad about having to enter my google account password since it's so damn long and complicated in order to download the busybox installer from the market. I've been wondering why the ROMs don't actually wind up installing busybox. They have a separate installbusybox script, but it never gets run. The installation should happen from within updater-script itself instead.

I was also getting mad that I couldn't edit any updater-script to create my own CWM zip. I wound up having to use amend2edify to create it, and I got rid of that status 6 error. Go figure, even Unix line endings didn't help.
Well, enjoy.
Great work!

This is clever -- obviously flashing busybox could be a script in the rom, but this is a good quick fix to avoid having to reissue every rom.
On second thought, I would suggest not using this script. There's nothing wrong with it, it works, but if you use the longer method you can install root explorer or something like it from market along with busybox. That way, if you get the disappearing market problem, which I've gotten with KC2, you will have some way to install stuff from your sdcard. I got the disappearing market but was able to install titanium backup and repeatedly install various versions of market from the sdcard until the market stopped disappearing. The suggested market fix of renaming the market app requires some way of renaming it and how do you do that without installing something from market to do it? Better not to have a chicken and egg problem.
If you like the script, you can always patch the rom you're flashing by unzipping it, putting the apps you want or need in the data/app folder or in system/app and then rezipping it and copying the patched rom to your sdcard. I patched ICBINB KC2 with the TW4 launcher (renamed to TouchWiz30launcher.apk) -- system/app for that patch -- and a few others. It worked fine. I had to reinstall KH2 again after Chainfire broke it and I must be learning because this time I only had to go through the routine twice before Linda started talking right.
It's about time for KH3 isn't it? hint hint....

Man, I wish that this would have been there last week. I was looking all over for an edify one, but none worked. I even converted it to edify, and It flashed, yet nothing happened.
The reason I needed it is because I was making an over scroll framework way before anyone posted a guide or anything, and I should have worked, I wasn't deodexed so I got into a boot loop, I was already voodoo but I had to flash a new factoryfs.rfs through heimdall. I just boot loop every boot because I had voodoo without busy box.

[Q] can't access CWM

since i've installed KJ6 ASOP, i haven't been able to access CWM, despite installing it with that very method. i'm beyond confused, and have tried every possible button combination, but still end up in "plain" recovery.
i feel like a total moron, since i've searched everywhere and can't seem to find someone with the same problem. i feel like there's something simple i'm missing, but i can't seem to figure it out.
Sounds/looks like stock kernel. Odin/flash/sgs kernel change to one with cwm in it..
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
I would do one of these (or try boths):
1- Look for drhonks kernels and flash kj1 odin version.
2- Also you could download a froyo kd1 based rom (whitehawks odin kd1 version) and then go for a kj6 based rom (ravers stock kj6 odin).
As long as you're rooted you can do the following:
Download SGS Kernel Flasher (Android Market)
Download bhudven's KJ6 kernel (the latest one he's posted) and save it to your sd card.
Open SGS Kernel Flasher.
Tap choose kernel
Find where you saved the kernel zip on the SD card and select it
Tap flash kernel
Let the phone reboot, you can now use CWM. I recommend you grab quickboot from the market, open it and choose "Recovery"
+1 to what FB said. He's the man.

[Q] Installing Hellfire Phoenix

I'm about to get a g2x very soon, and i heard that the stock rom sucks and that Hellfire Pheonix's is best. The instructions given on the op was not very beginner friendly, so i'm a bit confuse. This is going to be my first android and i would appreciate it if someone could link me to some sort of reference and tutorial for the installation of Hellfire Phoenix.
I've searched and google, but i had no luck. If you guys know if a detailed tutorial is out there, then just tell me and i'll put more effort into finding my answer. Thank you very much.
EDIT: To be more specific, what threw me off was "DO NOT use CWM to load the rom to your SD card. CWM has been known to cause file corruption when using it to transfer the zip file.". From all the tutorials that i've read and seen, they all use cwm. what are the alternatives?

What it means is don't boot into CWM and mount usb storage and copy files to sd card from there because it is known to corrupt the file and then could end up in a bad flash and it could harm ur phone.
When ur gonna copy the rom ur gonna flash to ur sd card, make sure ur booted into android first and mount usb storage from there.
Hope this helped

Correct.
Now, to fully answer your question:
Ok, adding this in after I wrote this to make things clearer: before starting make sure you:
1. Have G2x scrubber in the root of your SD card
2. Have the zip for your ROM (HFP in this case) in the root of your SD card
3. Have a copy of gapps (Google Apps) in the root of your sd card, get it here
4. After flashing CWM make a back-up (nandroid) of your stock ROM via CWM
First you need to flash Clockwork Mod (CWM) on your phone go here for that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Also, note: NEVER use ROM manager to flash CWM.
Second grab G2x scrubber from the HFP thread.
Next boot into CWM by holding volume down and power at the same time as the phone starts up. I find it helpful to count to three (eg, one one thousand, two one thousand, etc) after the blue and white (as opposed to plain white) LG logo first appears, that way you will have your finger off the power button when CWM starts. And in case it needs to be explained: you navigate CWM via the volume keys and make selections with the power button.
So, having downloaded G2x scrubber to your phone, go to "install zip from SD card" then "choose zip from SDcard" and navigate to G2x scrubber, run it twice.
Once that is done, use the same install zip option and this time choose the HFP zip.
Next select the gapps zip and flash it.
You're all done. Reboot and enjoy.
Thanks for the helpful replies! I feel very confident about modding my g2x when i get it now!
EDIT: Do i need to root my phone if i'm going to install HFP?

No, just use NVFlasher to flash ClockWorkMod Recovery, then flash your rom. You'll be rooted when you finish.
I found good guides on TheUnlockr. There are links in the thread discussing Hellfire Sandwich (HFS). If you don't need wifi calling or the ability to take video I would recommend using HFS v1.2. It is an update to ICS (Android 4.0.x) but it is not completely stable yet.

[Q] Rooted with SOC without unmounting SD

I performed root of my stock Froyo Infuse using Superoneclick.
I did NOT remove or unmount the SD card prior to doing this (it was not mentioned in the instructions I followed on another site).
The phone was successfully rooted. I see no problems evident in behavior of the phone.
I am contemplating flashing a ROM at some time in the future (after more studying of the qkster's "how-to").
Will this previous error cause me any problems?
Is there anything I should do to fix it before I proceed?
Thanks in advance.
You appear to have done everything correctly so you are safe to continue. When it says not having the sdcard connected it refers to your internal sd card, which cannot be mounted to the pc when running SOC.
What ROM you plan on flashing sir? That way I may be able to make the process simpler for you.

Thanks. AEON is my objective.
Very well, then you just only need to install cwm so you can flash the rom.
follow method 1 of this:

Be sure to first install the 3e modded recovery using an root explorer such as solid explorer or es file explorer, both free.

Or...since he's rooted download aeon, then download one of entropys DD kernels (any one...its only for cwm and the kernel will be replaced by aeon)
Then go to the playstore and search "sgs kernel flasher"
Flash entropys kernel that you downloaded
After reboot (may boot loop don't worry) boot into recovery by holding both volume keys and power simutaniously until your phone reboots and you see Samsung logo...when you see the Samsung logo release the buttons
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvic cache (under advanced)

I want to follow roughly mg2195’s path suggested above.
I did download SGS.
As a side-trip, I used SGS to install some Froyo-compatible custom Kernels (Infusion 2.0, Infusion 1.8, Defused 1.4).
I now have Defused 1.4 Kernal along with my stock Froyo ROM
I used Root explorer to put the modified recovery file in.
I rebooted several times and used the three-finger press, and now I reach the RED screen:
ClockwordModRecovery v2.5.1.3. But I didn't do anything at that screen yet other than exit.
I have two questions before I proceed;
QUESTION 1 – Can I skip entropy’s DD kernal since I already have CWM red?
QUESTION 2 – I want to verify the modified recovery file that I used is correct:
I use the one suggested in this Infuse video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y09p-J_g_Rg
the video links to file
http://llamalord.com/youtube/downloads/3e_recovery_no_sig_check.zip
When I googled that file name 3e_recovery_no_sig_check.zip to double-check, it lead me to this thread for CAPTIVATE:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
GTG has a different thread “100% working ClockworkMod Recovery for Infuse 4G” which has a zip file with a different name (recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-infuse.zip)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1107881
That 2.5.1.2 is not quite the same version number that I see on my red screen (my red screen says 2.5.1.3) . And on top of that, GTG made some comments on page 1 and 2 of that thread which I didn’t fully understand but lead me to believe Captivate is not a match (so he used i90000 instead). All of this makes me wonder if I have the right CWM red in there.
QUESTION 2 SUMMARY: Do you think my CWM red is good, or do I need to start all over again with GTG’s file?
Additional info found later;
I did find the same file 3e_recovery_no_sig_check.zip that I installed here on xda forums in an Infuse thread by h8rift: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091465 . I downloaded it and verified the zip filename and size is identical to the one I used. That makes me feel a little better about question 2.
Although I've been studying these things, I'm still confused about the next step (trying to figure Q1 answer myself). Maybe if I can understand better, then I can answer myself. The following questions are an attempt to improve my understanding:
Q3 - Does getting the red CWM menu mean my CWM is successfully installed the way it needs to be ready to flash a rom ? (I’d think it does, but not sure).
Q4 - I see the GTG thread was same one linked by andros11. I am totally confused about that thread. Method 1, Step 1 you take a zip (which zip... your ROM or the one linked on the message?) and you rename it update.zip and put it on your sd card (where on your sd card... surely it makes a difference?). And this accomplishes something different than putting the modified file named recovery file into root/system/bin/recovery using root explorer?
Q5 – the only purpose of mg2195’s recommendation to download entropy’s kernal was to get the modified CWM, right?
Thanks for your patience.
========================
I think I will go ahead and flash Entropy's daily driver, should make all my questions irrelevant.
I'll post results, fingers crossed that it'll be a proclamation of victory.
In the meantime, I'm still curious about above, especially question #4.
==================
Edited again - actually I am going to sleep on it for a few days and make sure this is what I want to do.

Since you already managed to get Cwm red, you have no need of using the 3e modded recovery. That would only allow you to flash the zip linked in the OP of the gtg thread, which should be placed on the root of your /sdcard.
Entropy's dd mg2195 suggested would replace your kernel with a Gingerbread one that included cwm.
I would say to go ahead and flash Aeon since you already have CWM.
