since i've installed KJ6 ASOP, i haven't been able to access CWM, despite installing it with that very method. i'm beyond confused, and have tried every possible button combination, but still end up in "plain" recovery.
i feel like a total moron, since i've searched everywhere and can't seem to find someone with the same problem. i feel like there's something simple i'm missing, but i can't seem to figure it out.
Sounds/looks like stock kernel. Odin/flash/sgs kernel change to one with cwm in it..
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
I would do one of these (or try boths):
1- Look for drhonks kernels and flash kj1 odin version.
2- Also you could download a froyo kd1 based rom (whitehawks odin kd1 version) and then go for a kj6 based rom (ravers stock kj6 odin).
As long as you're rooted you can do the following:
Download SGS Kernel Flasher (Android Market)
Download bhudven's KJ6 kernel (the latest one he's posted) and save it to your sd card.
Open SGS Kernel Flasher.
Tap choose kernel
Find where you saved the kernel zip on the SD card and select it
Tap flash kernel
Let the phone reboot, you can now use CWM. I recommend you grab quickboot from the market, open it and choose "Recovery"
+1 to what FB said. He's the man.

6. Flash clockwork recovery
7. Creat a Nandroid backup
8. Flash leaked 2.2 (10/2/10)
I now am looking to use the one-click flash to go straight to 2.2Beta5.5. The cognition FAQ stated:
From 2.2 Froyo
Odin Flashable ROMS
ONLY USED FOR THE ODIN FLASHABLE DOWNLOAD!!! DesignGears has provided us with a new way to flash. The Odin Flashable ROM. This .zip contains everything you need to flash a ROM using ODIN. It includes:
Odin.exe
PIT.pit
PDA.tar
PHONE.tar
CSC.tar
To use this, please see the ODIN page for more information. However basic instructions are:
Open Odin
Put Phone into Download Mode
Use ODIN to browse to all the Appropriate Files
Connect your phone
Hit Start , Watch the magic

Do i simply download the link provided on this page (the exact same one u used to get 2.2 in the first place)

or do i download the "2.2BETA5.5_ODIN.zip" on his download page
Is what i'm asking even achievable? or do i need to revert back to 2.1 before i can use that flashable rom for 2.2beta5.5.....
This needs to be in the Cognition thread
<Insert "this belongs, etc, etc." comment here>
But to answer your question, Odin would probably work but you can also follow the replace kernel method in the Cognition FAQ located in the first post in the Cognition thread.
Designgears created the odin installer and put it on his site for people who aren't comfortable with kernel swapping. What you are asking is possible, but not from a .zip in rom manager unless you change the kernel which needs odin to begin with.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
Kernel swapping will not result in you having to change much of your settings back other than what Cognition changes with each update. Using Odin will clear everything like a fresh flash [except the internal SD].
To a TiB and run Odin. Its easier and faster.
I have Samsung Infuse 4g AT&T, and I want to install some ROMs.
I heard that MIUI is good and fast. I checked the video and it looks cool.
But now I'm confusing... Can I just install ROMs after rooting 2.2.1? or Do I need to upgrade to 2.3.5 first and root it then install ROM?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278053 this is what I'm going to install.
Also, do I need micro SD card for installing ROMs or rooting?
thank you.
You just basicly need to have a modified version of CMW (Android recovery) so you can install a not signed package. Theres an easy way to get modified recovery by downloading the sgs kernel flasher and flashing the kernel provided by gtgx on this thread( the Froyo version since you are on 2.2.1):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220088
Direct link to kernel: (Owner gtgx)
http://www.multiupload.com/1E3AWIQYAA
READ the thread since it will take about 10 minutes on the first install of that kernel since its converting your data to ext4 etc after you get modified cmw by this or ANY other possible way (search cmw) just go into android recovery and install the rom. Usually on the internal sd card is where the cmw takes the rom files from.
But I still don't get it.. what you showed me is just ROM for Froyo. I want to know about process between installing ROM and rooting and version of Android.
Mine is 2.2.1 and I want to install ROM which contain(?) or for 2.3.5 or more.
should I update mine to 2.3.5 by using leaked with guide in Youtube then root? or should I just root 2.2.1 and install ROM?

you don't have to go to a leaked GB to flash the roms you want.
from the same link he gave you:
CWM Installation Instructions:
1) You must be rooted.
2) If you have a /Voodoo folder on your internal SD card, delete it and reboot.
3) If you're already running a custom ROM with Voodoo lagfix FULLY enabled, you can skip to step 7.
4) Download CWM-community-kernel-v8.zip if you're on Froyo or CWM-infused-v2.0.1-kernel.zip if you're on Gingerbread and place it on your internal SD card.
5) Install SGS Kernel Flasher from the Market.
6) Open SGS Kernel Flasher, select choose kernel, select the file you downloaded, and select flash kernel. Your phone will reboot and begin to enable Voodoo lagfix. Let it do that and boot all the way up. It will take a while (5-10 minutes) because it's converting all partitions to ext4.
7) Download update-infused-v2.X.X-full.zip and place it on your internal SD card.
8) Power off your phone.
9) With the phone powered off, hold both volume keys and the power button for about 10 seconds and then release. This should boot you into RED CWM.
10) Select "install zip from sdcard" and select update-infused-v2.X.X-full.zip.
11) Once that finishes, select "wipe data/factory reset".
12) Select "reboot system now".
13) Do NOT restore system data with Titanium Backup. Do NOT restore ALL apps with data. If you absolutely must restore something with Titanium Backup, only restore MISSING apps with data.
obviously, instead of the Infused ROM, you should have the rom you want already on your phone
OK you need full ext4 on Your phone. I haven't done this on my infuse cuz I'm kinda unimpressed with cm7 and miui. there might be an extra step for miui and cm7 to create a false efs partition or to backup format and restore it as ext4 but I'm not sure.
but since you only asked about the android version then no you don't need to start from a gb rom. froyo is fine. but you will need voodoo lagfix to get ext4 support and may as well skip the recovery process by flashing a voodoo kernel in sgs kernel flasher or in Odin.
after that I suggest reading the miui threads carefully.
Thank you so much guys!!
I will try this and when I got it I will post the tips for people who has similar questions as me.

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING MAKE A BACK UP OF YOU EFS FOLDER!
I am on Stock GB (Firmware version: 2.3.6) now what:
• Some have learned the hard way the importance of making a back up of the efs folder on your phone. The efs folder contains important information about your phone and in the event any of the files in the folder are corrupted there is yet to be a clear and concrete fix without a back up!
• Some will say you can’t make a back up of the efs folder without root. But I used Super Manager and copy and pasted the folder to my SD Card before rooting. I then copied it to my computer. Whether I can use this backup copy to restore the folder I hope to not find out.
I am on Stock GB (Firmware version: 2.3.6), I have an efs backup and Rooted now what:
• I need a custom kernel to give me CWM5 and Voodoo Lagfix
o I chose to go to market, download and install SGS Kernel Flasher
o Download Subtly Modified Stock with CWM5 + Voodoo Lagfix from the Galaxy S 4G Android Development section to the root of your sdcard.
o Open SGS Kernel Flasher.
o Backup kernel.
o Select the kernel you downloaded.
o Flash kernel. Phone will reboot
o You will hear Linda speaking on the Galaxy S 4G boot screen.
o Wait and wait some more! She will keep talking to you!
o Eventually the phone will reboot.
o Go into settings – Check your kernel version (2.6.35.7-sms-kj6-v0.1.1-rc1+) and check your IMEI.

You are saying ODIN or the Gremlin Remover are easier than using SGS Kernel Flasher? Have you used SGS Kernel Flasher yet? I doubt you will say your recommendations are easier if you have.
I just downloaded Rom manager and it says i need clockwork recover installed. So i select it.
It gives me 4 choices.
1. Google nexus S
2. Google nexus S 4G
3. Samsung epic 4G
4. Samsung Galaxy S i9000
I have a Samsung Galaxy Captivate i896 (Rogers).
Which one do i select?
Im guessing the i9000 but i will await a reply!
Thanks.

You'll need option 5: None of the above.
Seriously, though, Rom Manager doesn't work that well for the Captivate. You'll be in much better shape if you do the things that Rom Manager normally handles by yourself.

Really!!! Damn. I just bought Rom manager premium and was going to flash CyanogenMod on my phone and i found a video using rom manager and it seems a lot easier to do with it.
Im wondering if its because i changed the stock kernel so i could root the phone! I put the mtcareys-kernel on following a user post.
I bet that's why i does not recognize the phone.
Sorry to hear you spent the money, but maybe it's not entirely bad - Rom Manager works on a lot of other devices, and you can (I believe) transfer the program between devices.
Rom Manager might not recognize your device if the build.prop file was edited. That could be why it's showing the I9000 option.
As far as flashing CyanogenMod, it's fairly straightforward:
1. Flash a kernel that will let you use CWM Recovery (Corn Kernel should have it - Boog's kernel does too, and if you need Froyo, look for speedmod).
2. Once in Recovery, flash the CM update.zip (you may have to do this twice. If so, reboot to recovery again, and flash again).
That should get you to CyanogenMod.

Clockwork mod recover. Is that the blue writing that comes up when you press and hold volume up and down and then power? If so then yes i do have that. I used that to root the phone with the corn kernel. Little green guy with a yellow corn a boot up!
I did down load the latest stable version of CM. (update-cm-7.1.0-Captivate-signed)
It says to Place the CyanogenMod update.zip file on the root of the internal memory. But then it says Select Install zip from sdcard.
Also where is the update.zip file? And does it go on the root of the sd card or the root of the internal memory!
I'm following the guide here. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide#Before_you_do_anything_.E2.80.94_Make_a_backup
The actual name of the file you downloaded isn't that important. You can leave it with whatever it comes as. The "update.zip" they're referring to is the CM build you downloaded.
What you'll need to do is to copy the .zip file onto your phone Internal SD (the 13 GB partition) at a place you can find it easily. Once you've done that, reboot into CWM recovery (the menu with about 7-9 options, including "install zip from sdcard". It may have blue writing, depending on which build it is. If it only has 4 options, you don't have CWM recovery, but stock recovery.).
Once you're there, select the install zip from sdcard option, and navigate to where you put that zip file. Choose to install it and let it run.
If you're confused about whether you're putting an item on the internal sd card or not, you can connect your phone (including doing the "connect usb storage" dialog) and see what the drive sizes are. Once you know for sure which is your internal SD (13 GB), and which is your external SD (GB based on your card size), you can then re-label them in Windows (e.g. Internal SD and External SD). Those labels will usually stick pretty well.

i was going thru my file manager to get rid of some old downloads and files and i deleted update.zip. i am now pretty sure it was for rom manager or cwm and remember seeing somewhere that it is supposed to stay on the phone.
how to fix this? download new rom manager?
I have noticed lately that when i want to reboot to recovery from rom manager to flash something it just reboots the phone.

The update.zip contained cwm and was used during the eclair 2.1 days. Now days to get access to cwm we have custom kernels and we can use the extended power button menu of dev roms, button combo, apps, etc. to boot into recovery...so yep, don't worry about keepin it, unless u plan on goin back to eclair.

I performed root of my stock Froyo Infuse using Superoneclick.
I did NOT remove or unmount the SD card prior to doing this (it was not mentioned in the instructions I followed on another site).
The phone was successfully rooted. I see no problems evident in behavior of the phone.
I am contemplating flashing a ROM at some time in the future (after more studying of the qkster's "how-to").
Will this previous error cause me any problems?
Is there anything I should do to fix it before I proceed?
Thanks in advance.
You appear to have done everything correctly so you are safe to continue. When it says not having the sdcard connected it refers to your internal sd card, which cannot be mounted to the pc when running SOC.
What ROM you plan on flashing sir? That way I may be able to make the process simpler for you.

Very well, then you just only need to install cwm so you can flash the rom.

I want to follow roughly mg2195’s path suggested above.
I did download SGS.
As a side-trip, I used SGS to install some Froyo-compatible custom Kernels (Infusion 2.0, Infusion 1.8, Defused 1.4).
I now have Defused 1.4 Kernal along with my stock Froyo ROM
I used Root explorer to put the modified recovery file in.
I rebooted several times and used the three-finger press, and now I reach the RED screen:
ClockwordModRecovery v2.5.1.3. But I didn't do anything at that screen yet other than exit.
I have two questions before I proceed;
QUESTION 1 – Can I skip entropy’s DD kernal since I already have CWM red?
QUESTION 2 – I want to verify the modified recovery file that I used is correct:
I use the one suggested in this Infuse video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y09p-J_g_Rg
the video links to file
http://llamalord.com/youtube/downloads/3e_recovery_no_sig_check.zip
When I googled that file name 3e_recovery_no_sig_check.zip to double-check, it lead me to this thread for CAPTIVATE:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
GTG has a different thread “100% working ClockworkMod Recovery for Infuse 4G” which has a zip file with a different name (recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-infuse.zip)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1107881
That 2.5.1.2 is not quite the same version number that I see on my red screen (my red screen says 2.5.1.3) . And on top of that, GTG made some comments on page 1 and 2 of that thread which I didn’t fully understand but lead me to believe Captivate is not a match (so he used i90000 instead). All of this makes me wonder if I have the right CWM red in there.
QUESTION 2 SUMMARY: Do you think my CWM red is good, or do I need to start all over again with GTG’s file?
Additional info found later;
I did find the same file 3e_recovery_no_sig_check.zip that I installed here on xda forums in an Infuse thread by h8rift: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091465 . I downloaded it and verified the zip filename and size is identical to the one I used. That makes me feel a little better about question 2.
Although I've been studying these things, I'm still confused about the next step (trying to figure Q1 answer myself). Maybe if I can understand better, then I can answer myself. The following questions are an attempt to improve my understanding:
Q3 - Does getting the red CWM menu mean my CWM is successfully installed the way it needs to be ready to flash a rom ? (I’d think it does, but not sure).
Q4 - I see the GTG thread was same one linked by andros11. I am totally confused about that thread. Method 1, Step 1 you take a zip (which zip... your ROM or the one linked on the message?) and you rename it update.zip and put it on your sd card (where on your sd card... surely it makes a difference?). And this accomplishes something different than putting the modified file named recovery file into root/system/bin/recovery using root explorer?
Q5 – the only purpose of mg2195’s recommendation to download entropy’s kernal was to get the modified CWM, right?
Thanks for your patience.
========================
I think I will go ahead and flash Entropy's daily driver, should make all my questions irrelevant.
I'll post results, fingers crossed that it'll be a proclamation of victory.
In the meantime, I'm still curious about above, especially question #4.
==================
Edited again - actually I am going to sleep on it for a few days and make sure this is what I want to do.

Since you already managed to get Cwm red, you have no need of using the 3e modded recovery. That would only allow you to flash the zip linked in the OP of the gtg thread, which should be placed on the root of your /sdcard.
Entropy's dd mg2195 suggested would replace your kernel with a Gingerbread one that included cwm.
I would say to go ahead and flash Aeon since you already have CWM.
