Just got my hands on a free captivate... - Captivate General

I just had a 1010 captivate given to me by a coworker. The screen is shattered and I'm not paying to have it fixed. But I was considering pulling the logic board and swapping it into my 1007 captivate.
My question is, did the 1010s have the GPS issues that the 1007 had? I am just wondering if I do this, will it make my GPS more accurate?

I've had one of both, And they are both equally bad.

Just fix the screen and sell it. Should be able to make a little money on it.

You can probably get a screen cheap on ebay.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk

The cheapest I have seen screens on Ebay is $120. There have been no fewer than 10 working Captivates posted on Craiglist in the last week for less than that.
But, if the GPS isn't any better on the 1010, then I'm not even gonna bother swapping the Logic Boards. I'd just have to go through the whole process of putting Cognition 5.2 on it, and, at the moment, I am too lazy to go through it again.
I hate that I can buy a replacement Iphone 4 digitizer and LCD for less than $40, but it is over $100 for the Cappy.

From what I know/remember 1010's have issues with Odin not working correctly, which made it more difficult to get back to stock IF you had to use the odin1click to get back to stock (which had the bootloaders). But since you don't have to worry about getting back to original stock for any warranty purposes then there are other Odin's (full Odin's without bootloaders) that can safely get you back to stock. Plus not ALL 1007 had bad GPS, mine never seemed bad at all on any rom. Quick locks and never issues using it to get me anywhere. Yes in the beginning if I opened up MyTracks and watched it go around curves and such you could see where it looked like you drove off the side of the freeway but once I switched to and stayed with CM7 I never had any issues at all. Plus 1007 don't seems to have issues with using the i9000 modems as some versions do. I could be wrong but again I never had/ do have any issues with it. Moved onto ATT SGS2 but I still have two of my three cappys that I keep updated with CM7 (One is the wife's and the other is my toy).

returning for a replacement

Returning your G2x for a replacement, because of the so called "bleeding screen display", "reboot","wifi" and/or "battery" problem is ridiculous. Let me tell you why.
First of all, the "screen bleeding" is common to the G2x, and seems to be a feature tied to it's screen brightness settings. You can do this by downloading the hidden camera app which gives you a blank/black screen display and when it does you'll notice the so called "screen bleed" on both of the upper corners, because the G2x has different levels of brightness and when it drops from the max setting to medium the screen bleed will disappear, and then from their the screen shuts off. I believe the screen was meant to bleed this way on highest brightness setting, and is not a flaw that many think.
Second, the reboot is a bug that can be fixed with a software update. Like any computer sometimes to many processes can lock up the CPU and you need to wait until it can recover itself, the reboot is a feature that happens when the system can't recover the normal way, so this is just a bug that needs to be updated.
Third, I also thought I had the wifi problem since I couldn't connect at home, I downloaded wifi analyzer, and then I realized that I was entering a wrong password. After having entered the right password I now don't have this problem. Maybe ppl who are might try going back and checking to see if they entered the right password to access their wifi.
The battery problem is real, but I believe it can be remedied by doing a few tweaks to the activity of searching for data signals and turning off the radio when it's not needed. The first day I couldn't 8 hours out of the G2x, even just leaving my phone idle without touching it. The battery draining on standby is do to it searching for the data signals, so I remedied this by installing auto airplane mode which turns of data when the screen shuts off and turns it back on when you turn on the screen again. This worked wonders for me, since before when I went to work my phone would be at 30% after an 8 hour shift without me even having used the phone, but with auto airplane mode enabled, after an 8 hour shift I now have 70% battery still left even when I use the phone heavily on my breaks. I'm pretty sure we can get more hours of usage from the phone by tweaking the programs on it.
Ok finally and this is the biggest reason not to keep returning the phone for a new replacement. My last phone from Tmobile was the HTC Shadow which I just upgraded to this G2x, the battery was crap, just like this one, it did have a wifi problem but there was really no lcd problems until later. Let me explain why. You see back then (4 years ago) Tmobile did not charge for shipping out a new replacement, but many of us Shadow owners abused the system, by always asking for a replacement phone within our 1 year warranty. I myself am guilty of trading my shadow in for more than 11 replacements within the year, even though it was in good shape and had no problems. I just wanted a "mint" condition one, but as the year went on and I got the 7th, 8th, 9th etc replacement, the quality of the Shadow was downgraded. The newer batch of Shadows had a noticeable downgrade in the lcd and build, and for the very first time, Tmobile actually said they'd have to charge a $10 shipping fee. I don't doubt that this new policy was because we Shadow owners we're abusing the system and sending in our functional handset for a replacement, just to have a mint condition one. I used to go to a Shadow forum where all the members were returning there's many times for a replacement just like how this forum community seems to be doing.
Now if we understand this history, then looking at how many G2x owners already sent their functional, albeit "buggy" G2x handsets in for a new replacement, I guarantee you that the next couple batches of G2x will be of lower quality and Tmobile might even up the cost for an exchange or add additional fees by changing their return policy because of the perceived abuse. Make no mistake, Tmobile and LG are losing a ton of money for each new G2x being returned for another one, when the "problems" are minor or actually probably a feature (screen bleed) or bug (reboot, wifi).
I'm putting this out there, because I find that this is a solid high powered phone that just needs to work out the bugs with updates to the software, but if we keep making Tmobile or LG lose money on this model, then they'll cease production on the phone and just refurbish those handsets that were sent in for a replacement, maybe with lower quality parts, and use those to replace our G2x in the future, when they really DO need to be replaced within the coming year.
How about making bullet points, and keeping these massive paragraphs short.
So, you're a T-Mobile employee that has been sitting on this account for 4 years?
ETA: Most of the issues you've outlined are in fact just growing pains/glitches that will eventually be corrected. However, the light bleed issue is one of very poor quality control or defective manufacturing techniques. It does not only happen on high brightness, and it is unacceptable for a high end device from a name brand maker. LG seems to be having some serious issues with their IPS panels, not just in the G2x but also on the panels the make for some of the iPads. We have not heard the last of this problem, and I suspect it will cost LG a bundle in the end, both in terms of money and reputation.
@bighulk666 After typing this out, I was not about to spend another hour editing it. As long as I've articulated my thougts, it's good enough.
@spyvie This is my second G2x, since I made a mistake with the first one. I bought the first one at the Tmobile store which was an upgrade and came out to $286, I then found out I could have gotten it for $125 at another subcontracted cell phone dealer, and that's why I returned the first one. But the first one had the same light bleed, in the same 2 upper corners as the one I have now. Also most if not all G2x owners are reporting this so called screen bleed so I'm sure it was probably manufactured this way on purpose, but if it is a flaw, it's very minor. It's like returning a brand new car you just bought because you notice a 1 inch scratch on the paint job.
LG and T-Mobile both have acknowledged that this is a mfg defect. I have two emails from LG confirming this.
Adjusting the brightness to maximum only enhances the "problem". I doubt LG meant for it to be a "feature".

No, it's like returning a brand new car you just bought because there is a one inch crack in 2 or 3 corners of the windshield. Under certain conditions the cracks genuinely impede your view of the road, and replacing the windshield is impossible or would cost more than the car is worth.

Okay maybe G2x has some minor problems, the whole point I'm trying to make with the thread is that the more people who keep returning a fairly brand new out of the box G2x just hoping they'll recieve a "perfect" one, is gonna make Tmobile and LG lose alot of money on this phone that has a lot of potential, and that will force them to cut their losses and drop this phone all together without even giving it a chance.
I'm telling what I witnessed with this same situation happening with the Tmobile Shadow. Tmobile had a great return and exchange policy until the Shadow community abused it, since then they changed it and now it costs shipping and your noted on their system for each time you do a return or exchange marking you as a "problem" customer, that they'll now give you the "run arounds" and make it more difficult for you to get an exchange or return. And as for the phone, because of all the complaints and returns, they'll just cease production on it and just use the rest of the stock for exchanges, when that runs out quick, they'll give you low quality refurbished ones. It's just gonna be a lose situation for all the G2x owners who want to make this phone succeed.

I think this should've been your OP, shorter and straight to the point. I agree with you on the refurb replacement if T-Mobile runs out of stock, because LG actually told me to go read the G2x manual as it specifically states that if they can't repair a defect (that is totally their fault mind you) then they can only exchange it for a refurb and not a brand new phone.
Personally after my experience with LG's customer service department I will probably not buy another LG product that carries a premium price tag.
This thread reeks of desperation. Describing the threat of a possible doomsday scenario where T-Mobile completely drops support for the phone unless customers are loyal and compliant only increases the chance I will return my G2x.
The battery issue is just that an issue. My first g2x got at most 8hrs of standby and a little use. But my 2nd and 3rd are pushing 16hrs with moderate use, everything left on and screen at 100%.
The point is for $500 I shouldn't be forced to turn things off to get at least a half day of battery on it.
As for your idea of just accepting how else is LG and T-Mobile going to acknowledge this phone has issues and their paying customers won't stand for it.

I told you this would happen with all the unneccessary returns and exchanges because yall choose to dwell on a tiny imperfection such as the "screen" bleed which is a commonality on LCD screens, even high end computers have it, and now we see the G2x already being given away for free, a sign that Tmobile is just trying to cut their losses and make a buck with contracts on this model. I won't post the links of where you can find it dirt cheap and even free, but I'm pretty sure many on this forum already know, and I can guarantee that it was because of all the exchanges and returns. But what really get's under my skin is the change in policy for restocking fees. Again it can't be a coincidence that it recently changed especially with all the G2x returns/exchanges being posted all over the net. Here's news on the new return/restock policy :/

@jacob808
First of all many people return the device BC you walk into a store and many of the reps have no info but .. lets do a factory reset... and when that wont work they just tell u to exchange it ... that's what happen to me.
Second if Tmobile is marking ur account for other future reps to just give u run around just BC u complaint that ur phone that u paid 500 Buck for or secured them a 99.99 monthly bill for the next 2 year that's illegal as its fishing.... sorry if I expect to get what I pay for...
I have bought mytouch 4g,vibrant,HD 7, g2, touch pro 2 all full retail price and NEVER had a bleed.
Reboot ANYTHING I've had Tmobile for over 7 years an never file a complaint or problem till now so its a problem
MOST IMPORTANT IF LCD BLEED WAS SO COMON THEN Y IS THIS THE ONLY PHONE WITH A TON OF THREAD JUST ABOUT LCD BLEED... U DONT SEE A MYTOUCH,VIBRANT,SGS4G, IPHONE4 .... THEREADS WITH LCD BLEED

Vibrant doesn't use an LCD. Moot point.
Couldn't resist haha
I don't understand the loyalty some people are having to a hunk of plastic. It's a prime example cognitive dissonance over a $500 purchase. It's a flawed phone, regardless of whether it's hardware or software flaws.
Since I left it for another phone, I haven't had to make a single excuse for my new phone. That's what $500 should buy you, the happiness of not having to give excuses as to why your phone does this or that or why you have to turn this off for that to work, etc.
imo, if the unit has issues, which it does LG should just man up and fix it, those that got early failed unit, should get replacements
I paid full retail for mine, and tried to get a replacement, and they acted like they had never heard of any of the issues.
Tmobile is a good company customer service wise, but the early batches were just not up to par for $500 electronics
and that new $50 restocking fee for smartphones is also not very cool also
I wish I had the luck like some of the people here who were able to trade in two and three phones till they got a good one

I got a replacement when the "factory reset" would not solve the problem (problem with stock camera and EB leaked GB generic camera - dark photos without constantly upping the white balance and very dark screen on barcode scanner and other similar apps).
However, I am now going to return the new unit, as I got the original going OK, and reinstalling some apps like purchased GPS program is a hassle,, and the original unit is only 1 month old. The issues with other scanner apps may be an issues with the unit (same on replacement), but they all work OK on EB 1.0.4 so going to stay with it.
Wish I could ship off to someone who really needs it, but am running up against their 7 day return policy (tomorrow it has to be shipped). It also came with a prepaid UPS sticker for the return.

This is actually a known issue involving the brightness level. If set wrong, it causes apps that use the camera to look dark.

DadGum Thunderbolt

Well, my first Thunderbolt is officially going back home.
I was the proud recipient of a Thunderbolt on release day. For the first 14 days I was able to put up with terrible battery life, tons of bloat and stock Sense. After my first 14 days I decided to Root it. I have ridden a whirlwind of Roms and Kernels for the better part of 2 months. I have dabbled in all of the CM7 releases and tried a couple of other Roms including my own sad attempt at a de-bloat. I have found myself fond of the TeslaCoil Rom and Imoseyon Kernels. Battery life is now a non issue, the bloat is gone along with most of sense. The phone is very smooth and fast thanks to a 1.92x supercharge.
However, today I had my first major fault. I was talking to my better half (read : wife) during break at work this morning and like someone flicked a switch the phone went to static. By static, I mean you could barley hear the other person over it and they could not hear me at all. I switched from 4G to 3G, slowly backed down to the previous Kernel, then reloaded my last backup. From there I flashed a new, fresh Rom. Every time the problem persisted. By the time I got home all seemed lost. I pulled up the trusty XDA site and began reading the return to stock page. After about 10 min I had a factory fresh Thunderbolt in my hand. All evidence of my last two months of crack flashing and fast running phone were gone. I place the test call and DAMN, it's still jacked. Off to the local VZW store and they ordered me a new refurb phone. I did everything except assault the nice girl behind the counter in attempt to get a new unit. I was told that I would have had to do the $100 dollar claim to walk out with a new one. So now I wait until Wednesday to get a working phone.
On a side note. The heavy static heard in the ear piece is not present through the speaker phone to me, just the person on the other end. I also found that if I "flick" the microphone on the bottom of the phone while in use the static will stop for like 1 to 2 seconds. I can only assume there is some sort of short internally in relation to the microphone. Also I can assure you that I have not dropped the phone "yet."
I will cruise back here on Wednesday night on my freshly Rooted, refurb Thunderbolt and update.
If you made it this far, thanks for letting me rant.
AdamT.
Dude, that would totally piss me off that they would give you a refurb phone due to a warranty issue. I mean, the $100 deductible is for lost/damaged phones, not for phones that the manufacturer jacked up.
Wow, half day into the sock setup and I already have to recharge. I can't believe Verizon sells this crap.

Well, I got my fancy new reman unit. First thing I noticed is the light leakage others have complaind about. Poor build quality compared to my original. That sucks. I was also lucky enough to get one of the phones that reboot randomly and can't handle the exreem under volting.
The replacement is definitely less of a unit then my first one. At least I can make calls.
I have had more lockups and reboots in one day then the month and a half I had the other one.
I will give it a day or two and se how it settles.

They will keep sending you refurbs. Happened to me with my Droid X, went through 4 refurbs before I gave up and just sold it. I called a **** ton of times, talked to managers, etc.
same here. i just got my refurb one and im disappointed..... the screen on the top right corner feels like someone didn't tighten up the screw and i can push it in and out. the color sucks! not as bright as my old one and has a dull brownish color to it. just really pissed off. i loved my new one but it went to poop. thought htc makes quality phone? my droid x was a much better quality but damn lock bootloader.

The I'm glad I waited for a good one club.

So there is a I've had no problem club......
I am on my fifth one.....a refurbished scratched one no less.
I have gone three weeks with......dare I say it.......not one problem. Not one. I'm loving my G2X now! I always knew I loved it, just took me 5 trys to get the one meant for me.
So if you are getting discouraged, there IS light at the end of that tunnel. IMO, it is really worth returning 'em 'til you get the one meant for you.
It works awesome. I use it constantly and it isn't failing me!
I'm not sure why this one was returned....no screen bleed at all, data works great, everything perfect. Must have been that scratch. Sucker probably got a pos in return for it LOL.
But I've always known there WERE good ones out there. Glad I finally got mine.
Correct me if im wrong, but I thought Tmo wasnt allowing returns of the G2x for issues anymore??
Congrats on getting a 'good' one, lol.
When did you receive your phone? I'm trying to wait out so that I can receive a newer one w/o issues

Where is that scratch? Lol I returned one due to the smallest scratch near the bottom. On the screen,so small you have to see it in the right light.lol
The refurb you receive aren't necessarily one that a customer had. Especially this early in a phones life. Usually they are new ones that the manufacturer set aside as replacements. That's why the fcc sticker under the battery is the same as a new phone out the box. When you get a generic plan sticker with just a model and serial number, that's an actual refurb phone.

Rogers replaced the infuse for galaxy S II

Well so here goes my drama with the infuse.. I recieved the first one like 2 weeks ago and shortly afterwards the simcard would not be read even after repeated flashing back to stock firmware. I called their technical support and got a replacement sent in. Last night the replacement came in and after playing with it for about an hour or so, the screen was flickering strangely. Soon the flickering turned into a weird flashing and all these lines ran across the screen. The top of the screen was on FIRE!!! underneth that gorilla glass the friggin thing was on fire. I took out the battery and the fire turned into a small smoulder afterwards it died off. I WAS PISSSSSED! i vowed never again to buy a samsung phone as they have really bad quality. So this morning after calling rogers and spending 2 hours jumping through the hoops and them forcing me to replace that infuse with another pos infuse, i negotated them to replacing it for the samsung galaxy s II w/ LTE and the 4.5 inch LCD.
Friggin hell.. i just hope that samsung galaxy s II will be of better quality than this infuse. All you guys on the infuse right now, i wish you the best and i hope problems like mine dont happen to you.
Lol, that is the drama. Unheard of. My Infuse is doing just fine, but I guess you should be glad that you got a free upgrade. The thing about Rogers is that you can always talk them into doing things.
Yea mines been doing fine and I got mine a month after release(US), I hope you really like that new phone because it basically the infuse on steroids! Dual core processor plus its LTE!! Its sgsII's Big brother

I've actually been wondering if I should be getting warranty work done on mine or trying to exchange it. I've had my Infuse for about 2 months now, and every so often (maybe once or twice a month) the screen will just turn a completely different hue as if there was a yellow or red filter over it.
Maybe if I press the issue I can get a Galaxy S2 4.5"? XD

Well it was kinda covered under their 15 days buyers remorse policy. That policy helped this process but it nevertheless was like pulling out teeth. It talked to 10+, guys today and mostly all of them told me the only option is warranty work so that means a refurbished model of the infuse. To me that was unacceptable as it had two new phones and both were defective (well one was defective the other one the jury is still out). But yeah, if i were you, I'd go see if you could trade up. They probably will want you to pay something though..

To be honest, I'm surprised you had such a hard time with them then. You should have been able to walk into the store and basically say you didn't want it anymore. Shame that they gave you such a hassle.
Haha thats fricken hilarious.... Hope that dosent happen to me lol

XD

Joining Verizon Galaxy S III Family

So tomorrow is finally the day I get to upgrade my phone, my fascinate has treated me well these past two years, but its a bit dated now. So I've been following the forums and threads on the S III but I didn't see much people saying anything about specific hardware issues with the phone. When I go tomorrow to purchase my phone, is there any hardware specific stuff to look at to make sure my phone doesn't suffer from quality issues or run tests apps like display tester to test out the phone so I don't come out with a lemon and have to come back to exchange it? Any suggestions on making sure I don't get an lemon is much appreciated.
I wouldn't worry about it. Mine has been rock solid, even after a trip into the pool.
Enjoy your new phone. I'm sure you'll love it.

As someone who had a launch fascinate, and upgraded to an s3 in July, let me add my opinion.
Gps. Though still not bulletproof and instantly locking like my wife's iphone 4s, it is way better than the stock fassy and even cm builds
Rom. Stock Rom is way less bloated and tw is way better with a smaller footprint.
Quality. About the same. I miss the 4 capacitive buttons actually. Still find myself hitting the android options key when trying to get to the launcher
I still have my fascinate in case this breaks and needs to be swapped. I do not miss it at all though. I could never find a perfect Rom for it. Something was always broke or buggy. I love my s3. Was going to sell it to get an iphone 5, but I am going to keep it now.

Glad to have someone who has experience with the fascinate and gs3. I was concerned with the gps since the gps on the fascinate was pretty wonky. I guess the gs3 isn't much different in build quality with the thin plastic battery cover.
I previously owned a Fascinate as well, it was a great phone but outdated.
I was first worrying about the size being (alittle) too big, after few days it seems to be perfect size.
I do not like the physical home button and the external speakers location. The battery cover is a thin flexible plastic cover, atleast it will not shatter if dropped on hard surfaces.
And the most important of all, it is not an iphone. Unless you have a lemon or defected phone, you will love it.

Yeah, I was worried about the size until I tried out a floor model and to me, felt fine, different from the 4 inches of course but nothing like the galaxy note. I think one major difference is what you mentioned, the physical home button, coming from 4 capacitive buttons to just 3 buttons with one of them a physical one, is pretty different.
A lot of us come from the fascinate. Me too. I find this phone has built nicely on the original fascinate. Adding things that needed along with the general hardware upgrade. Or now thinking on it, Samsung or Qualcomm should have given us a quad core but such as life.

Yeah such is life, but having the dual core hold up to that quad core is nice.
On another note, didn't get my galaxy s3 today. So I have unlimited data on my plan and went though hell to try to find a way to keep the unlimited data and get the phone at the discount price. I might of done it, but won't know until verizon sends me my phone in the mail. Will know in a couple days.
It's a great choice ! You will be glad you took the upgrade ! I even enjoy the phone out of the box . This phone is going to be limitless .

Let me be one of the first to say Welcome to the VZW GS3 Family! I may be on GS3 #3, but I think I finally got a keeper. The phone kicks my bionic's a** left and right, and I feel the GS3 is the best phone on the market atm.
As for me being on GS3 #3, I wouldent worry about build quality. First one had the screen gap issue (was back when the GS3 had 1 forum for all carriers), second one had dead pixels, but this current one is a keeper!
I am also new to the verizon fam. Came from sprint and am so happy with this gs3. So much to do that sometimes dont know what to do on the phone. What cool tricks do u suggest. I habeny been on this site in years.
To update everyone, I got my phone today and was able to activate it and keep unlimited! The sweet sweet smell of a new phone with unlimited 4G.

Did you specifically request to keep your unlimited? I am just curious because I preordered mine and was able to keep it. I am not sure if they are still allowing anyone who has unlimited to transition to the S3 with unlimited or only people who specifically request it... anyone have more information??
The phone is fantastic. I've had no issues with it. Welcome to the family!
I love my GS3. It's a great phone and build quality is pretty good. But I did have a few things though most of them are minor. Do check them out within your return window:
1. My 1st GS3 had GPS issue. Took forever to lock and wouldn't stay locked. Got an exchange for that and the 2nd one is way better, still not perfect but totally usable.
2. My 1st GS3 came with a tiny scratch on the screen. I found it after using the phone for < 2hours. At first I thought I scratched it. Then after keeping the phone in the same pocket (completely naked) for 3 weeks, and then having the 2nd one for a month, no scratch whatsoever. Now I'm pretty sure my 1st one came with the scratch. It's a very tiny scratch can only be seen from certain angle. But it annoyed the hell out of me.
3. Both the 1st and 2nd GS3's back cover have a squeaky spot. The 1st one right behind the volume rocker, the 2nd one behind the home button. Not the worst problem but can get annoying.
I saw other people report screen problem (dead pixel) so running a screen test is probably not a bad idea.

As far as I know if you take a discounted price on a phone, you have to take a share everything plan. Op how did you keep your unlimited?

I didn't, after June 28th you can't request to keep it. See below how I did it.

I was checking for everything, can you tell me more about the back cover squeaky spot, been squeezing it, haven't had any squeaky spots, I assume that means I don't have that problem.

I did a cross upgrade, I was able to transfer my upgrade to a different phone and then have that line upgrade to the s3. When it came, I just esn swap (transferred the phone to my line). Note this only works with ordering from the website. At the store and anywhere else they will force you to switch. Trust me, I banged heads with a lot of people over this.

When I got mine at full price they made me switch before they would activate it but I'm fine with it.

Ahhh that makes sense then. I was pretty sure they weren't allowing people to do that anymore no matter what but the way you went about it seems to be a few and far between sort of thing. Nice work on keeping that unlimited data though. props

It feels solid to me. Its a thin cover but its all packed together in that slim body pretty tightly so it doesn't feel cheap (at least not to me). You can't tell its a thin plastic back unless you remove it as it doesn't move or give at all when it is on the phone. I think the fascinate felt worse
The GPS is no problem at all on the S3 but I never had issues with it on my fascinate either although I know a lot of people did.
