hi guys,
why have all the focus on sense 3.0 roms?
i prefer sense 2.1. i use at the moment the lbc 0.60 mod with unity v4 kernel
in my eyes the best sense 2.1 rom.
is it possible to make a sense 2.1 rom in mix with actually ota from htc or using the newest kernels like unity v9 or else.
thx
Mix with ota sure possible, but yet not build as much as i know.
Unity v9 you can use, anyway it fits better than tiamat, cause unity is build for sense roms and tiamat for aosp roms
I'm quite surprised that that kernel works with sense!?
Nothings wrong with Sense v2.1 and LBC IMO was best implementation of it - I've not long come from it myself, although even LBC's next ROM will be pure sense 3.0 - showing that times change and things move on!
The reason why the direction has moved towards Sense v3.0 is as a result of the official release and the fact that the devs have tweaked it so that it runs as fast if not smoother than Sense v2.1 did, with more eye candy!
They just need to work on battery life!
sorry. i'm using unity v4. i have changed first post
I agree with original poster.. i love sense 3 but i hate the carussel.. i wish there was a way to disable it and use the 2.1 method

You need to try more Sense v3.0 ROMS the degree that the carousel spins varies across the ROMs and in some is even turn on and off'able.
I personally really like the way that I can scroll in a full circle - a huge improvement on having to go left or right then stopping, but, I don't think that the carousel effect is completely necessary.

I also hate the nuisance spinning carousel. It's a prime example of form over function. If you want a good Sense 3.0 ROM where this has been inhibited, I can recommend BinDroid. It's not been turned off, just damped right down so it's actually quite hard to go into an eyeroll-inducing home-screen spin-out.
I actually hate the whole screen switching thing. I prefer the side to side switch of 2.1
Must admit I like the carousel ,rather than having to flick backwards and forwards ,it's just case of moving on around

No, I like that feature too, but the carousel is the pretty annoying animation where by the screens just spin round in mini size! whizzing by just eye candy but pointless except use CPU and therefore burn battery!
I would have agreed with the OP a few months back
I disliked the sense 3.0 aswell. I tried virtuous unity, it was slow AND laggy.
But since then, sense 3.0 has been desgined for single core now. And it is very well optimized for pur phones.
I don't really mind the carousel.. ive gotten used to it now.
The real things I like about 3.0 are the deeper integration, keyboard new sense apps etc.
What looks.nice now is sense 3.5 want to give it a go soon!
Do any of you notice any significant changes in battery life between 2.1 vs 3.0?
I don't!

My first Android phone was the Tmobile (US) G2, so I got used to the plain vanilla OS. When I got my Sensation 4G in June I was immediately put off by Sense, which in my opinion is inferior. To get closer to the stock feel I use Launcher Pro and this certainly helps, but I still see Sense running in the applications list. If I kill the process it momentarily gets removed from the list but is there again when I next check. I have read that this could be because Sense also controls the dialer and contacts, so my question is if I replace those functions with a 3rd party application will Sense be gone for good?
Just let sense run in the background. It's not using cpu cycles so it wont affect performance or battery much usage at all. And unless you're reluctant to flashing new rom, try this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204912) out. A new version is supposed to release today which is supposed to be off the hook. And its the closest you can get to stock that I know of so far.

I am not yet at the point where I want to flash a new ROM. So are you sure leaving Sense running isnt going to negatively impact my battery life? I have read other posts stating Sense is a cpu/battery hog.
How can you not like Sense, i'm biased as every android phone i've owned has been an android with HTC Sense so I can't live without it, the Launcher pro looks cheap and too basic, you need Sense to add a bit of flare to your phone!

Yes its definitely personal preference. It would take away the shine of having an android phone if you didn't use it. Android is very basic and the "normal" hope screens are boring compared to HTC Sense. Anyway i'm all for sense .

Sense is a cpu/battery hog while its active. On android however, when apps are put into the background, they become inactive.
Now I'm not a developer so I may be wrong. I based this conclusion off this article which leedroid linked to in his rom: http://lifehacker.com/5650894/andro...ed-what-they-do-and-why-you-shouldnt-use-them
In Android, processes and Applications are two different things. An app can stay "running" in the background without any processes eating up your phone's resources. Android keeps the app in its memory so it launches more quickly and returns to its prior state. When your phone runs out of memory, Android will automatically start killing tasks on its own, starting with ones that you haven't used in awhile.
The problem is that Android uses RAM differently than, say, Windows. On Android, having your RAM nearly full is a good thing. It means that when you relaunch an app you've previously opened, the app launches quickly and returns to its previous state. So while Android actually uses RAM efficiently, most users see that their RAM is full and assume that's what's slowing down their phone. In reality, your CPU—which is only used by apps that are actually active—is almost always the bottleneck.

It's slow, it's bloated, takes battery life and has no 'advanced/configurable' features a la CM7 or LauncherPro.
Sense is much much more than the launcher. It's the whole ecosystem on a HTC Android phone. Hopefully when Ice Cream Sandwich hits Google will stop manufacturers putting their own launchers on top of Android, or at least make it an option. I don't mind a few widgets (flip clock) but Sense has gone too far.
Roll on CM7 and MIUI!

I like using LauncherPro in place of Sense because you can add all the eye candy you want (even Sense looking eye-candy) without having to include the whole battery wasting, memory hogging, and gigantic Sense Eco-system.
Based on what appears to be confirmation that Sense is a memory/cpu/battery hog, will running an alternate launcher be sufficient to prevent this or do I need to somehow fully disable it?
Just use your launcher pro. Don't worry about sense, she won't bother you anymore.

Can I ask for an HTC Sense 2.1 rom? I really find the Sense 3.0 rosie a hassle and the carousel, though pretty cool, gets annoying when I need to quickly scroll to a certain homescreen. Also I prefer the smooth basic screen transitions of Sense 2.1 as opposed to the 3D effect transition on Sense 3.0 roms.
Actually, IMO, the best rom would be an HTC Sense 2.1 with Sense 3.0 features (lockscreen mainly) fusion. Can anyone make it happen? (aka Undeadk9)

You're right but I just want to make sure: Is it possible to downgrade our MT4GS's Sense 3.0 to Sense 2.1? If so, how? (I'd like to design a custom rom myself )

I could probably do that, but I only make ROMS I intend on using, I'm pretty busy with school and work, but If I have a free weekend I might give it a try. However I don't think it would be worth it, a lot of features would be cut, since I wouldn't spend time optimizing it for the MT4GS, just the basic 2.1 ROM.

Thanks dude, I appreciate it alot man. And I know what you mean about busy. 5 AP classes + a job leaves very little free time, let alone the fact that you have other stuff to do. But if you could get the basic Sense 2.1 rosie and perhaps provide me tips on how to implement the widgets (especially the clock widget, it's basically the trademark of Sense haha), that would be all I'd need.
Also, couldn't you literally just replace the Rosie from a MyTouch4g/DesireHD sense 2.1 rom, as well as the other htc widgets as Seo did to bring a Sense 3.0 port to Sense 2.1 roms?

The reason I want this is simply because I hate the carousel of Sense 3.0 (it still lags occasionally), but love the widgets.
I simply don't like the features of LPP or ADW because, in those launchers I can't use Sense widgets...

Yea, but there's so many devs for the Sensation, I wish our MT4GS had more...
Oh and btw, those devs just ported over the HTC Amaze 4G's (aka MT4GS's) camera to their Sensations. WOOW is all I can say.
Plus, with the second coming of smartphones in the HTC Amaze and SGSII, there'll be even less reason for future devs to work on this phone.
Gotta admit though that I like the hardware keyboard as an additional option for typing. It may be crappy compared to the G2, but I've never used a slider-phone before.
And, I hate the designs of the Amaze and GSII, they're even more curvy than the MT4GS and Sensation, lol.
Sorry...to get back on topic, Undeadk9, would it be much simpler to port the Sense 2.1 rosie over onto a Sense 3.0 rom? Rather than modding an entire rom? And is it as easy as I think it is?

In another phone, you can just trick Rosie into thinking it's running on a Sense 2.1 device and it will run in 2.1 mode. However, I don't think it's possible with the native MT4GS Rosie since it's specifically compiled for us/TMO. I could be wrong though, worth decompiling it and taking a look at it.
I wouldn't run Sense 2.1 though. That's boring.
Or maybe you could exchange it for a desire hd or mytouch 4g since you're looking for older software. there's not going to be a whole lot of demand for older software on a newer device unfortunately.

That's exactly what I don't want, as you can see the MT4GS is SUPERIOR to those devices. But I really prefer the simplicity of the old sense, and combined with a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, it would be 1000000x faster + no lag. Why would I want to go back to the "Stone Age" so to speak?
Really and truly it's the carousel that bothers me, if I didn't have to deal with the carousel on Sense 3, it would be just fine.
And let's just put it this way: Sense 2.1 is exactly what Sense 3.0 is WITHOUT the carousel. So for those of you who don't prefer the carousel, this is what you want. Of course there's the lockscreen, but I'm talking purely on the basis of the rosies.
Sorry for the double post, my previous one was loaded.
I'll just say that Ima try and put one together myself.
I also posted a video on what I mean by Sense 2.1+3.0. (Check first post)
I also posted a poll to gather the opinion of users in this forum.

Lets use some analogies here. The difference between sense 3 and sense 3.5 is the same as a woman, she may be wearing the latest clothes as the woman next to her wearing older clothes, but underneath those clothes she still has those "desirable" (see what I did there?) lady parts.
Basically, 3.5 is sense 3.0, just with a fancy new dress.
Sense 3.5 is much faster for me. UI of certain apps finally look beautiful which makes the whole Sense the best UI out there. Just my opinion.

2.1 -> 3.0 -> 3.5 evolve
I have used stock Sense 2.1 for over a half year till i rooted and tried out Runny S(Sense 3.5) the change was stunning.
After using (testing) more and more ROMs, mainly through more iterations of updates(3.0 like Voidu, Hyperion and 3.5 Runny S, Endymion) i have seen that the changes are not only visual, but e.g. the Sense 3.5 gallery is much faster and the improvement is huge in my opinion (miss it a lot right now on CM7.1).
Next i seen is the camera app, as i take a lot of pictures with phone (only in common days ), i realized it has many new features, that makes your phone even more usable as a everyday camera.
I suggest you try the Endymion(3.5, really fast, stable, many features), which is almost as stable and fast as Hyperion(3.0, fast, stable, good battery). Maybe try both and see for yourself, which has better experience for you.

Sense is not just a launcher, so you can't just disable it. You can put a launcher over Sense though.
But I would suggest putting a custom ROM and removing all the annoying parts of Sense, while keeping the good ones. No-sense script from Revolution HD does that quite well
hmm looks like i'm gonna have to read up on rooting then go for it.
Can anyone suggest any stable highly rated ROMs? Between reading up on how to root and custom ROMs available my head is starting to hurt
TIA
You don't like sense so I recommend Cyanogenmod.. It's stable and fast. I use MIUI and love it but there is some parts not fully working yet.
CM is for you if you want 100% of Sense removed. But if you want a bit more "stock" experience, try Revolution HD 4.X with no-sense.
Heck, try both, or more, you'll learn a lot and figure out what you really like. It's actually quite simple once you get the basics

I really don't want to derail but what do you guys find so good about sense?
To each their own and I encourage that..
But come on! It makes me cringe!

that's what I say to everyone:
without sense is not an htc!....is just another phone, like others...only who have an htc deserves sense!...
I understood sense after months...is so elegant, so beautiful, useful, you got everything under your finger...fast, veeery smooth, more than all other launchers, and very stable...
social integration, widgets, animation...everything STOCK!...
yesterday I tried ordroid....I think that roms are not enough stable, even if BT is the only bug...but is awesome, very very nice feel and look...is much better than 3.6, but the launcher is a bit laggy
about sense 4.0
I used Ordroid 1.72 sense 4.0, i really like it but my battery is ending to fast, i have the newest firmware, like 12 hours and i need to recharge again, anyone knows why ?
Think Ordroid is Most stabile out there and baads IC. Besids Bt, everything is fine, But i prefer 3.6, more smooth

Which Sense 4 ROM has the best battery life? I keep switching between Sense 3.6
and Senseless ICS but Sense has a lot of nice features that no other has. I haven't tried Sense 4 yet but I hear it's much better. Don't have a charger with me all day to test right now.

To add to this, a bunch of non-HTC users can't all be wrong. I have a number of friends with various other brands of phone, and whatever other good points they might like about their phone, the one thing they most often comment on is how much they like the look and feel of Sense compared to whatever is on their phone.
Yes personal preference is fine, yes Sense is not going to be 100% perfect, but I'll take 90% over 70% any day. Who knows, maybe HTC users are a bit spoilt?

i myself definitely think that's the case...i tried no-sense and AOSP because everyone on these boards constantly complains about how slow/delayed/retarded Sense is, one member even telling me i was lying to myself and to others...though i did in fact notice a difference, in actuality it amounted to about a half second delay's difference

It's not so much the speed for me, but the visual lag. on AOSP-senseless my framerate is a constant 60 FPS, which is good, really smooth. On Sense 3.6, 4.0, whatever, I've dipped to 15 FPS before. Like, the homescreen is decently smooth but my Music Queue is ridiculously laggy.
On a sidenote, straight up AOSP is no faster than Senseless, I don't care what anyone says.

how do you feel about the user experience when running a Sense ROM but with an alternate launcher? faster/same/useless??

I've run a couple of different launchers on Sense ROMs and they are just that...different. They can be faster, and the ability to customise more (transition animations and the like) is a plus, but if you crank all the settings up and choose the most complex animations you are bound to create some lag. My first thought on using a new launcher was "wow this is so much smoother and faster" but once I started delving into all the different options I realised quite a few of those things are default and unchangeable on Sense whilst the custom launchers come a bit more 'stripped back'.
I'm currently using GO Launcher but not because I didn't like Sense, and GO Launcher has been fun but it's certainly presented its own issues. I'm actually considering going back to Sense for a while.
