[Q] Whats the difference between sense 3.0 and 3.5? - HTC Desire S

Tried to search for this on the forums but didn't find anything.
So...
What is the difference between sense 3.0 and sense 3.5? (except the .5)

GUI graphics have changed, menus have been rearranged a little bit, bit quicker to access certain functionality, as well as new features added.
If you want my opinion, go for 3.5, its a lot better.

What??!! No sarcasm!! Zeekiz, you're losing your edge bro...
I'd have to agree with that though. Go for Sense 3.5.
As for the diffenences between 3 and 3.5, Google, and YouTube.

The differences are very subtle, but why go for vista now that windows 7 is out?

I googled for differences between the two and found lots of pages talking about the official/declared changes.
I was hoping to get some "under the hood" info from the forum folk.

Lets use some analogies here. The difference between sense 3 and sense 3.5 is the same as a woman, she may be wearing the latest clothes as the woman next to her wearing older clothes, but underneath those clothes she still has those "desirable" (see what I did there?) lady parts.
Basically, 3.5 is sense 3.0, just with a fancy new dress.

Sense 3.5 is much faster for me. UI of certain apps finally look beautiful which makes the whole Sense the best UI out there. Just my opinion.

2.1 -> 3.0 -> 3.5 evolve
I have used stock Sense 2.1 for over a half year till i rooted and tried out Runny S(Sense 3.5) the change was stunning.
After using (testing) more and more ROMs, mainly through more iterations of updates(3.0 like Voidu, Hyperion and 3.5 Runny S, Endymion) i have seen that the changes are not only visual, but e.g. the Sense 3.5 gallery is much faster and the improvement is huge in my opinion (miss it a lot right now on CM7.1).
Next i seen is the camera app, as i take a lot of pictures with phone (only in common days ), i realized it has many new features, that makes your phone even more usable as a everyday camera.
I suggest you try the Endymion(3.5, really fast, stable, many features), which is almost as stable and fast as Hyperion(3.0, fast, stable, good battery). Maybe try both and see for yourself, which has better experience for you.

3.5 not drain to much battery?
i want to try Endymion rom, this is a good choice?

Battery drain on Sense ROM depends on your mobile usage ! (you can use it an entire day with a normal use without any problem)
But Endymion is really good choice !

IMO, I don't think there is a noticeable difference in terms of battery life.
And Endymion is your best ROM to use for Sense ATM.

MT4GS HTC Sense 2.1 ROM + 3.0 features (i.e Lockscreen, weather videos, etc.)

Can I ask for an HTC Sense 2.1 rom? I really find the Sense 3.0 rosie a hassle and the carousel, though pretty cool, gets annoying when I need to quickly scroll to a certain homescreen. Also I prefer the smooth basic screen transitions of Sense 2.1 as opposed to the 3D effect transition on Sense 3.0 roms.
Actually, IMO, the best rom would be an HTC Sense 2.1 with Sense 3.0 features (lockscreen mainly) fusion. Can anyone make it happen? (aka Undeadk9)
FOR A BETTER IDEA OF WHAT I'M SAYING, here's a Tmobile G2/HTC Desire Z running an HTC 2.1 base+3.0 rom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ-kNW-nGFA
Ummm no. Sense 3.0 is so much better. No dev would do that. It's not something a large group of people would use.

You're right but I just want to make sure: Is it possible to downgrade our MT4GS's Sense 3.0 to Sense 2.1? If so, how? (I'd like to design a custom rom myself )
You would need to find a phone compatible with our device. I'm thinking the MT4G or Desire HD and port it to Doubleshot.

From my developmental tests from Sense 2.1- Sense 3.0 on the HTC HD2 and Desire HD,
I realized that it's possible to port the Sense 3.0 rosie to a Sense 2.1 rom. I'm wondering if it's possible to port the Sense 2.1 rosie to our MT4GS's Sense 3.0?
Sense 2.1 sucks compared to 3.0 use undead sensless rom u wont be dissapointent

I could probably do that, but I only make ROMS I intend on using, I'm pretty busy with school and work, but If I have a free weekend I might give it a try. However I don't think it would be worth it, a lot of features would be cut, since I wouldn't spend time optimizing it for the MT4GS, just the basic 2.1 ROM.

Thanks dude, I appreciate it alot man. And I know what you mean about busy. 5 AP classes + a job leaves very little free time, let alone the fact that you have other stuff to do. But if you could get the basic Sense 2.1 rosie and perhaps provide me tips on how to implement the widgets (especially the clock widget, it's basically the trademark of Sense haha), that would be all I'd need.
Also, couldn't you literally just replace the Rosie from a MyTouch4g/DesireHD sense 2.1 rom, as well as the other htc widgets as Seo did to bring a Sense 3.0 port to Sense 2.1 roms?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062962
The reason I want this is simply because I hate the carousel of Sense 3.0 (it still lags occasionally), but love the widgets.
I simply don't like the features of LPP or ADW because, in those launchers I can't use Sense widgets...

You're right I haven't tried it yet. I'll give it a shot sometime later. Too lazy to s-off and sort it out. I just hate the 3d flip animation, I like the smooth screen transitions that were on the older Sense rosies.
I'm still contemplating whether I want this phone or return and exchange for a Sensation. Of course either way, it's Sense 3.0 carousel.

KEEP IT. The Sensation is a piece of crap, I worked for T-Mobile and we have returns on them more than anything. They overheat, the touchscreen is highly unresponsive, and the screens look mediocre... Even after installing custom ROMs they still have issues.

Yea, but there's so many devs for the Sensation, I wish our MT4GS had more...
Oh and btw, those devs just ported over the HTC Amaze 4G's (aka MT4GS's) camera to their Sensations. WOOW is all I can say.
Plus, with the second coming of smartphones in the HTC Amaze and SGSII, there'll be even less reason for future devs to work on this phone.
Gotta admit though that I like the hardware keyboard as an additional option for typing. It may be crappy compared to the G2, but I've never used a slider-phone before.
And, I hate the designs of the Amaze and GSII, they're even more curvy than the MT4GS and Sensation, lol.
Sorry...to get back on topic, Undeadk9, would it be much simpler to port the Sense 2.1 rosie over onto a Sense 3.0 rom? Rather than modding an entire rom? And is it as easy as I think it is?

I agree. Keep the phone. Plus this cpu is meant to clock at 1.5ghz. The sensations is right where its suppose to be. Plus this device has a way better processor. And the keyboard is a huge plus.

In another phone, you can just trick Rosie into thinking it's running on a Sense 2.1 device and it will run in 2.1 mode. However, I don't think it's possible with the native MT4GS Rosie since it's specifically compiled for us/TMO. I could be wrong though, worth decompiling it and taking a look at it.
I wouldn't run Sense 2.1 though. That's boring.
Or maybe you could exchange it for a desire hd or mytouch 4g since you're looking for older software. there's not going to be a whole lot of demand for older software on a newer device unfortunately.

That's exactly what I don't want, as you can see the MT4GS is SUPERIOR to those devices. But I really prefer the simplicity of the old sense, and combined with a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, it would be 1000000x faster + no lag. Why would I want to go back to the "Stone Age" so to speak?
Really and truly it's the carousel that bothers me, if I didn't have to deal with the carousel on Sense 3, it would be just fine.
And let's just put it this way: Sense 2.1 is exactly what Sense 3.0 is WITHOUT the carousel. So for those of you who don't prefer the carousel, this is what you want. Of course there's the lockscreen, but I'm talking purely on the basis of the rosies.
Sorry for the double post, my previous one was loaded.
I'll just say that Ima try and put one together myself.
I also posted a video on what I mean by Sense 2.1+3.0. (Check first post)
I also posted a poll to gather the opinion of users in this forum.
If there are too many No's, then I will stop this thread from further discussion.
So you just want the sense 2.1 interface but with sense 3.0 basically. Why don't you try a new launcher?

All of this nonsense because you dislike the 3.0 carousel? Im sorry but you have lost your mind. And your to lazy to s off? Its a 5 min process Thats completely automated and pain free. But yet you want to design a rom which could take days maybe weeks? All Im seeing is a huge lack of common sense.

why sense 3.0. i wish a actually sense 2.1 rom

hi guys,
why have all the focus on sense 3.0 roms?
i prefer sense 2.1. i use at the moment the lbc 0.60 mod with unity v4 kernel
in my eyes the best sense 2.1 rom.
is it possible to make a sense 2.1 rom in mix with actually ota from htc or using the newest kernels like unity v9 or else.
thx
Mix with ota sure possible, but yet not build as much as i know.
Unity v9 you can use, anyway it fits better than tiamat, cause unity is build for sense roms and tiamat for aosp roms
I'm quite surprised that that kernel works with sense!?
Nothings wrong with Sense v2.1 and LBC IMO was best implementation of it - I've not long come from it myself, although even LBC's next ROM will be pure sense 3.0 - showing that times change and things move on!
The reason why the direction has moved towards Sense v3.0 is as a result of the official release and the fact that the devs have tweaked it so that it runs as fast if not smoother than Sense v2.1 did, with more eye candy!
They just need to work on battery life!
sorry. i'm using unity v4. i have changed first post
I agree with original poster.. i love sense 3 but i hate the carussel.. i wish there was a way to disable it and use the 2.1 method

You need to try more Sense v3.0 ROMS the degree that the carousel spins varies across the ROMs and in some is even turn on and off'able.
I personally really like the way that I can scroll in a full circle - a huge improvement on having to go left or right then stopping, but, I don't think that the carousel effect is completely necessary.

I also hate the nuisance spinning carousel. It's a prime example of form over function. If you want a good Sense 3.0 ROM where this has been inhibited, I can recommend BinDroid. It's not been turned off, just damped right down so it's actually quite hard to go into an eyeroll-inducing home-screen spin-out.
I actually hate the whole screen switching thing. I prefer the side to side switch of 2.1
Must admit I like the carousel ,rather than having to flick backwards and forwards ,it's just case of moving on around

No, I like that feature too, but the carousel is the pretty annoying animation where by the screens just spin round in mini size! whizzing by just eye candy but pointless except use CPU and therefore burn battery!
I would have agreed with the OP a few months back
I disliked the sense 3.0 aswell. I tried virtuous unity, it was slow AND laggy.
But since then, sense 3.0 has been desgined for single core now. And it is very well optimized for pur phones.
I don't really mind the carousel.. ive gotten used to it now.
The real things I like about 3.0 are the deeper integration, keyboard new sense apps etc.
What looks.nice now is sense 3.5 want to give it a go soon!
Do any of you notice any significant changes in battery life between 2.1 vs 3.0?
I don't!

[Q] MIUI vs Sense 3.5?

What you think is better and more stable? I was using Sense 3.5 but yesterday i install the MIUI one and it look so cool! but i see in DS forum that most of users use the Sense one.
Must .. resist .. temptation .. to .. troll .. >_<
Sense 3.5 all the way.
This should be posted on the Q&A section.
Mods please move this thread.
My answer: i dont know, im not using either of it.
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
There are about 5 different Sense 3.5 ROMS each of which provide a different level of experience.
MOD: move thread.
It's apples and oranges, Sense (in general, not just 3.5) allows customization, useful widgets, a beautiful homescreen and some great apps. Lockscreen is great too.
Miui is more about speed and performance, and a LOT of theming, you can customize the hell out of it, it's much faster than sense.
Matter of choice.
Sense 3.5 UI is indeed great, but I personally think it also puts unnecessary burden on battery. Many services in sense rom keeps on running even if you close them.
On miui if closed once they are down for good(almost)

I am going to try MIUI today.
the only thing i miss in sense roms is the INTERNET PASS-THROUGH feature(allows phone to use PC internet via usb)
still wonder why Miui has not been able to add this feature
Miui and sense 3.5 are both very nice in their own different ways.
If I use miui though, i greatly miss the functionality of sense 3.x.
So I use Sense, and miui just for fun to test

I love Sense, it's fast and stable on my phone. MIUI looks great too, but I've read it's not stable at all yet.

Miuiiiiiiiiiiiii!
I just flashed MIUI last night, previously only knew Sense 3.0 and more recently the 3.5 version. I love the speed and layout of MIUI - BUT, and this is a major but... the email implementation is not up to par with how I like to use my android phone. Since this is the only issue I've run into so far, below is a list of what I personally thought could be done better.
MIUI Email Pitfalls:
- "Corporate" email, sucks because the only option is the super secure version that would be nice for corporations who own the phone - but lets get real, what percentage of MIUI users fall into this category (0% maybe)? The Exchange email implementation should be like the Sense version in that you don't have to give up access to your phone and abide by "Exchange" rules governing your entire phone experience IMHO.
- Ability to quickly change email filters, e.g. unread, flagged, attachments, etc - loved this ability in Sense and really miss it so far.
There's my relatively short list. I'm sure there are mods that can alleviate these pitfalls, but hey this is just day two. =)

CM7 vs Sense as of today.

what would be the opinion on this matters as of today in reference to the latest roms,
Sense. if you want a good UI, definitely go for Sense. i'm not saying roms like CM7 are bad, but they're just a little.. well ugly IMO. but of course, if you are looking for speed and battery saving, then AOSP roms are the best option. not saying that Sense is a great battery hog. in fact, i got well over two days, with still about 40% remaining. moderate usage, heavy internet browsing using 3G/4G, semi heavy texting. now of course, AOSP roms could probably get wayy better than that, but i go for looks of the UI.
what would we the best sense rom right now ?

I can throw a Sense theme on LauncherPro and mess with some settings to make AOSP look exactly like Sense without all the bloat. sure it might give you a little more eye candy with all the nice widgets, but just eats up the battery. not trying to diss your post or anything like that, just my opinion

though if you want less buggy and more stable, then Sense 3.0 is the way to go.

Today, like yesterday, like 1/2 year ago, on this specific phone - Sense vs CM is a matter of personal preference. Both do the job just fine, both have good and bad points. Overall decision is up to the person. Sense has much more functionality, usefulness, prettiness and built-in "gadgets", CM has much more customizability and "clean" Android feel.
My personal preference - after spending enough time with Nexus One, I've learned to appreciate Sense usefulness.

IMHO, and i know people will disagree with me.
Sense is like a fat girl on a tri-cycle. It takes a whole ton of effort to not go very far. And it's really not all that good looking.
AOSP, such as CM, is like a super model, plain jane it's kind of boring. But once it's all dolled up. Man there is nothing prettier.

I would completely agree with this analogy.
On another note, MIUI is a AOSP ROM with a unique, beautiful look and the great speed and battery life of an AOSP ROM. Give all ROMs a try. In my opinion, I preferred:
MIUI > CM7 > Sense
But that's just me.
I've been using Sense for quite a time. Really love the function auto link contact.
My question is, if I can get some thing similar in CM7 rom? I mean, CM7.2 rc0 from TDJ?
I don't see how Sense looks any better than a good themed launcher on Cyanogen. It's all a matter of tastes. This is like arguing vanilla is better than chocolate or vice versa.
Because you're looking at the launcher. Look deeper: notification bar w/ settings, phone, mail, settings menu, etc. No matter what you do with CM, to the capabilities of Sense you won't get, or even anywhere near. Too many things in too many places are head and shoulders above what plain Android or CM have to offer, functionality-wise. I bet that 90% of those not understanding what Sense is about, never used 10% of what it has to offer under the hood - small things, but a lot of them, which makes using the phone that much more comfortable. I've made a list once, what Sense has above AOSP/CM/MIUI that can be added by 3rd party apps, and what it has that can't be added by anything. I'm too lazy to write it another time, you can search for it.

I've made a list once, what Sense has above AOSP/CM/MIUI that can be added by 3rd party apps, and what it has that can't be added by anything. I'm too lazy to write it another time, you can search for it.

well said.
examples of apps/things that Sense has that can be never added on an AOSP/MIUI ROM:
-Sense Camera app | you gotta admit, it's pretty amazing
-Facebook link feature | great feature that only Sense includes
-Sense Weather app/widget | true, there are a bunch of apps out there that copy it, but in the end, Sense does it best
-Sense Clock app/widget | very beautiful, like with the Sense Weather, many apps out there copy the Sense clock widget, but Sense still does it best.
So from what i gather, sense have the best camera out of CM7 and MIUI?
I havent flash a room since Darkside 3.1.0 and looking to flash new room but i get lost with so many rom out right now. Which rom would you recommend for having best camera? and what exactly is the different from 3.0 and 3.5 sense?
There are many more smaller things than the camera and widgets. I'll note a few:
The quick toggles notification panel is better and prettier than MIUI's, and CM is far behind.
The zooming glass is much more comfortable than standard Android pointer anywhere else.
Sense selection cursors in browser don't fail and "run away" from the real cursor where AOSP/CM/MIUI do.
Zoom capability in mail app.
Proper Exchange support (AFAIK, some servers refuse the regular Android client, used by both CM and MIUI, because it lacks several security features).
Ability to move mail between folders (this basic ability is missing from AOSP/CM/MIUI mail app).
Lockscreen with SMS/alarms/notifications/etc.
Much nicer tabs and favorites with preview in browser.
Generally better thought-of menus and buttons in UI for most internal apps.
As I wrote, lots of small things. But they matter for user experience much more than how the launcher looks.
i just can't do sense anymore after using cyanogenmod for so long, it feels so bloated and closed down. after using miui with an ics theme I'm not sure if anythjg but an ics rom will satisfy me. I'm just too used ro having clean homescreens thanks to folders.
tldr; try them yourself.
Virtuous Team Ends Unity
On my twitter feed this morning, I noticed a posting by the Virtuous Team for the new year.
http://www.virtuousrom.com/2012/01/happy-new-year.html
Officially, work on Unity has been conculeded and with it work on Sense 3.0. Continued work on Affinity is TBD.
Based on that, I can't help but feel that highly polished Sense Custom Roms will fall behind for a little while.
I like all the cameras, they all seem good to me.
It will come down to personal preference but I have come to keep a backup of CM, Sense and MIUI installs, soon to have ICS after camera fix I am sure.
Have your cake and eat it too!

I really don't want to derail but what do you guys find so good about sense?
To each their own and I encourage that..
But come on! It makes me cringe!

that's what I say to everyone:
without sense is not an htc!....is just another phone, like others...only who have an htc deserves sense!...
I understood sense after months...is so elegant, so beautiful, useful, you got everything under your finger...fast, veeery smooth, more than all other launchers, and very stable...
social integration, widgets, animation...everything STOCK!...
yesterday I tried ordroid....I think that roms are not enough stable, even if BT is the only bug...but is awesome, very very nice feel and look...is much better than 3.6, but the launcher is a bit laggy
about sense 4.0
I used Ordroid 1.72 sense 4.0, i really like it but my battery is ending to fast, i have the newest firmware, like 12 hours and i need to recharge again, anyone knows why ?
Think Ordroid is Most stabile out there and baads IC. Besids Bt, everything is fine, But i prefer 3.6, more smooth

Which Sense 4 ROM has the best battery life? I keep switching between Sense 3.6
and Senseless ICS but Sense has a lot of nice features that no other has. I haven't tried Sense 4 yet but I hear it's much better. Don't have a charger with me all day to test right now.

To add to this, a bunch of non-HTC users can't all be wrong. I have a number of friends with various other brands of phone, and whatever other good points they might like about their phone, the one thing they most often comment on is how much they like the look and feel of Sense compared to whatever is on their phone.
Yes personal preference is fine, yes Sense is not going to be 100% perfect, but I'll take 90% over 70% any day. Who knows, maybe HTC users are a bit spoilt?

i myself definitely think that's the case...i tried no-sense and AOSP because everyone on these boards constantly complains about how slow/delayed/retarded Sense is, one member even telling me i was lying to myself and to others...though i did in fact notice a difference, in actuality it amounted to about a half second delay's difference

It's not so much the speed for me, but the visual lag. on AOSP-senseless my framerate is a constant 60 FPS, which is good, really smooth. On Sense 3.6, 4.0, whatever, I've dipped to 15 FPS before. Like, the homescreen is decently smooth but my Music Queue is ridiculously laggy.
On a sidenote, straight up AOSP is no faster than Senseless, I don't care what anyone says.

how do you feel about the user experience when running a Sense ROM but with an alternate launcher? faster/same/useless??

I've run a couple of different launchers on Sense ROMs and they are just that...different. They can be faster, and the ability to customise more (transition animations and the like) is a plus, but if you crank all the settings up and choose the most complex animations you are bound to create some lag. My first thought on using a new launcher was "wow this is so much smoother and faster" but once I started delving into all the different options I realised quite a few of those things are default and unchangeable on Sense whilst the custom launchers come a bit more 'stripped back'.
I'm currently using GO Launcher but not because I didn't like Sense, and GO Launcher has been fun but it's certainly presented its own issues. I'm actually considering going back to Sense for a while.
